Council of Chambers Encourages You to Put Your Money
Where Your Heart Is, Martin
In an effort to encourage chamber members throughout Martin County to do business locally, the Council of
Chambers of Martin County is launching a new, heartfelt
campaign. In one uncomplicated message the Council is
asking Chamber members of all five Chambers of
Commerce to simply “Put your money where your heart
is” by doing business with fellow chamber members.
The Council of Chambers of Martin County will kick
start the new campaign with colorful posters, stickers, eflyers and social media promotions. Chamber members
across Martin County from small businesses to box stores
will participate by displaying the poster and stickers in
their store fronts, at cash registers and in office windows.
“The Council of Chambers has promoted ‘buy local’
campaigns that encourage member to member business
for decades. We recently saw a need to revamp and reenergize our messages,” said Joe Catrambone, President
of the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce.
“The ‘Put your money where your heart is’ message is
most appropriate for a new campaign. Members are loyal
to their Chambers and to each other. Their hearts are
with their fellow members and respected colleagues,” said

Susan Joy Aziz has been a volunteer with the Area
Agency on Aging of Palm Beach/Treasure Coast since
2006. Because of her devotion to helping others,
Tequesta Terrace Assisted Living recently presented her
with the Senior Service Award. The Area Agency on
Aging nominated Aziz for this honor. The charity and
Aziz were each given a $500 gift from Tequesta Terrace
Assisted Living as part of the award presented to them
during a special event in their honor.
Aziz said “The greatest honor and joy for me is working with the Agency’s caring and compassionate staff and
volunteers to improve the quality of lives of seniors in
our community.”
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Area Agency on
Aging is dedicated to serving the needs of seniors,
adults with disabilities and their caregivers throughout
Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee, and
Indian River counties. The senior population in these
areas is over 552,000. The Agency’s Elder Helpline is

Hobe Sound Toasters Celebrate Five Years
At the September 9th meeting, Hobe Sound Toasters
celebrated their 5-year birthday as a local area club under
Toastmasters International. Founded and chartered in
September 2008 and sponsored by the Hobe Sound
Chamber, Hobe Sound Toasters continues to be dedicated to helping local individuals gain confidence, develop
speaking skills and ultimately become leaders in their professional and personal lives.
The meeting was held in the Herron Center of the
Hobe Sound Bible College. To set the mood, all members present had party hats, and noise makers. Songs with
birthday themes rang out from the CD player as folks
entered the room for the meeting and during break time.
The meeting proceeded with 3 prepared speeches and
evaluations.
Intermission snacks were brought in by Rich Otten,
DTM, who made a delicious chocolate birthday cake and
Jef Otten, CC, who baked peanut butter cookies. Area
Governor, Audrey Burzynski, provided birthday party
“goodie” bags for everyone.
Following the break, Table Topics was led by Jan Otten
relating some birthday trivia followed by asking questions
that evoked birthday memories from fellow members
Marty Post, George Strasdas, Kathleen Gemme, Hieu
Huynh and Carol Labuhn.
Toastmasters International presented the club with a

Certificate of Achievement to commend Hobe Sound
Toasters for reaching 5 years as a member of the larger
organization.
In a letter of congratulations accompanying the certificate, George Yen, DTM, International President and
Daniel Rex, Chief Executive Officer stated, “You and
your leadership team are the alchemists that transform
lives, one at a time. Indeed, Toastmasters’ founder, Dr.
Ralph Smedley, wrote on his 80th birthday on February
22, 1957, about the magic of a successful club experience:
It leads to the discovery of hidden abilities, bringing
these latent talents into use, and thus enriching the
man’s life.
It broadens the man’s conception of how to live with
people.
It helps in the integration of personality.
It brings out for use the leadership traits and abilities
and thus helps to prepare the man to be a leader.
The letter goes on to say, “As you and your team perform your leadership roles, you will notice the transformation happening within. Beyond the improvement
in your communication and leadership skills, you
might notice the gradual transition from a “taker to a
giver.” If so, congratulations, you are on your way in
your leadership track, be it in district leadership or in
your profession.”
“Through all of our five years the Hobe Sound Bible
College has been supportive and allows us the use of a
classroom for our regular meetings as well as larger
rooms for contests and events. We are so grateful for
their continuing support” stated Jan Otten, Toasters
Secretary. The Bible College will be hosting their annual auction fundraiser on November 15th and have
asked Hobe Sound Toasters to contribute items to that
auction. Please consider donating something that perhaps you no longer need but possibly someone else will
be happy to have.
Since 1924 Toastmasters International groups have
provided a supportive learning environment in which to
develop communication and leadership skills. Hobe
Sound Toasters is open to Chamber members and the
public. If you are interested in learning more about
Toastmasters you are invited to a meeting at any time.
Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each
month, 7:00-9:00pm at the Hobe Sound Bible College,
Herron Center, 11298 SE Gomez Avenue, Hobe Sound.

Hundreds Give Back During United Wayʼs Day of Caring
United Way kicked off its 2013-14 campaign with
more than 250 Martin County residents who volunteered four hours of their Saturday to help make a difference in the community.
It began with a free breakfast at the Martin County
Fairgrounds where Amy Albury, director of environmental relations and sustainability at Florida Power & Light
and United Way’s 2013-14 campaign chair, thanked
everyone for supporting United Way by giving back to
their community.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off United
Way’s campaign than with Day of Caring,” Albury said.
“I was amazed at how many people were willing to spend
a Saturday giving up their precious time and talents to
help others in the community. I was especially encouraged to see so many families volunteering together!”
Working with 17 local nonprofit agencies, United Way
organized 21 volunteer projects that included everything
from distributing food via mobile food pantries to putting together compassion kits for the homeless to painting houses, landscaping and vegetation removal.
“It was evident that Martin County is a special place to
live full of caring people,” Albury said.
Individuals, families and even groups from local businesses participated in Day of Caring and once their proj-
ects were completed by noon, the volunteers and their
families were invited to Sailfish Splash Waterpark for a
free afternoon of fun.
Day of Caring was made possible thanks to the support of Martin Volunteers; CHARACTER COUNTS!;
Martin County Parks and Recreation Department;
Sailfish Splash Waterpark; Coast 101.3 FM; Martin
Health System; Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith; FPL;
Publix Super Markets; Chick-Fil-A; Martin County Fair

United Way of Martin County’s aim is to improve lives
together and lift the community by helping end hunger;

Lillian Johnson Honored for 25 Years as a Chamber Volunteer
A special surprise took place at the August 28th
Business After Hours when Lillian Johnson was honored for serving 25 years as a Chamber volunteer.
During the ceremony all of the volunteers were recognized by the Chamber staff and Board of Directors for
their dedication and in appreciation for their hours of
assistance in helping to keep the Chamber running
smoothly and efficiently. Each volunteer was introduced
individually noting their exceptional volunteer talent
and presented with a lovely rose as a token of thanks.
Several guest speakers addressed the audience with
anecdotes and reminiscences of the years spent working
with Lillian on various projects. Veterinarian Dr.
Richard Smith related a dream he had about seeing himself lying in his coffin and Lillian was there at the funeral with her basket selling 50/50 tickets. Jennifer Ferrari
spoke about the 10 years she worked at the Chamber
with Lillian by her side. Mike Ennis was able to highlight the years he and Lillian coordinated the Christmas
Parade. Lillian was presented with two large bouquets
of flowers from the law firm of Lesser, Lesser, Landy &
Smith and from Dimar Florist. A banner with Lillian’s
photograph and a” thank you for 25 years” hung on the
wall above the cake that was provided by Forest Hills
Funeral Homes. When the microphone was handed to
Lillian she said, “For the first time in my life I am
speechless and I am truly overwhelmed.”
A photo album with a collection of pictures of
Lillian with various Chamber members through the
years was given to her and Angela Hoffman and Jan
Otten read a poem that they had written and was printed in the photo album.
A Poem for Lillian
By Jan Otten & Angela Hoffman
Lillian, it is said that Angels can be disguised
as friends
You are that friend to so many
A helper beyond compare
A friend who is always there
Someone to share our lives with
A blessing and true gift
We can always count on you
Someone who remains honest and true
The lives you’ve touched are vast and many
Years of volunteerism, earned not a penny
25 years of patience and dedication
Never taking a single paid vacation
You can’t say “No” to Mrs. 50/50
Your ability to raise money is more than nifty
A Chamber leader in so many ways
Your presence in the office brightens our days
Your gift of the Parade brings Hobe Sound
happiness and cheers
Thank you for 25 amazing years!
