August “Augie” Henry Ponchatoula, LA meet 2011 TCA Convention
Pritzlaff Jr.
was successful AGAIN! in Sacramento, CA
August Henry Pritzlaff Jr. 86,
died Sunday, October 24, 2010 peacefully in his sleep of natural causes.
He was born on August 25, 1924, in
Culver, Indiana at Culver Military
Academy where his father, August
H. Pritzlaff Sr. was an instructor. His
mother, Helen S. Pritzlaff, and father
preceded him in death as well as his
wife of 40 years, Joan C. Pritzlaff.
He is survived by his two sons, August
Pritzlaff III and Raymond Pritzlaff
and wife Lynn; two grandchildren
Mathew and Catherine; his brother
John Pritzlaff and wife Shelby of
Crofton, MD; and two nieces Susan
March and Carol Kather.
Augie was a graduate of Evanston
Township High School in Evanston,
Illinois and a PhD Chemical Engineering graduate of Northwestern University.
He served his country aboard the
destroyers USS Ault and USS Hank as
a Naval Officer, eventually retiring as a
Lieutenant Commander after teaching
for many years in the Naval Reserves.
August had a lifelong passion for
railroading and was a longtime member of the Train Collector’s Association. In lieu of flowers, donations in
remembrance of August H. Pritzlaff,
Jr. can be sent to Train Collector’s
Association, PO Box 248, Strasburg,

I was always pleased to see Augie,
be it at TCA meets, the World’s Greatest Hobby or a Gulf Coast Chapter
meeting at Tom & Chris Rogers’ ~

A heart felt congratulations to all
of the Louisiana members for helping
make or Nov. 6th Train Show a great
success!!! Approximately 340 paid attendees! Noting the number of children
under twelve we had 500 PLUS people
attend our event!
A big tip-o-the-conductor’s-cap to
our dealers, kid display providers and
layout builders! You guys provide what
the public wants - trains, toys and the
memories of good times past! And you
guarantee that there will be future train
collectors and operators!
And special thanks to those who
volunteered to man the registration and
raffle tables! Without our volunteers we
simply could not do these shows!
We are going ahead with a Chapter Show this coming March. We are
reserving the Lions Club again for this
event, and certainly hope that all of you
will be back and participating in this
event. ~ Clay Fourrier.
Note to all: While the LSD officers
pushed and cheered for a comeback
after the 2005 Hurricane Katrina, followed by Rita this Louisiana Chapter
has pulled itself out of the downward
spiral. It could only happen by their
own efforts. This is proof that you can
survive if you want to. ~ Pat Halpin

The TCA 2011 Convention, June 26–
July 2 is being held in Sacramento, CA
which is situated in the heart of Northern
California. It is the Capital of California and is one of the most historic and
charming cities in the west. It is where
gold was discovered in 1849 which
drew miners from all over the world and
attracted railroad barons to create the
Transcontinental Railroad. The historic
Old Sacramento is a renovated area along
the Sacramento River waterfront, about
twelve city blocks from the Convention
hotel, where the California State Railroad
Museum (CSRM) is located and the old
Central Pacific Station still stands housing vintage railroad equipment from that
era. The CSRM houses a full size Southern Pacific cab-forward locomotive, a
WP “A” unit, an operational Pullman
sleeper car, the Thomas Sefton Toy Train
Gallery, and many other things of interest
for those who love railroads or just want
to experience history. It is a world class
railroad museum.
The Convention has been designed
with cost in mind. Friday is a good day
to use the Convention shuttle around
Sacramento to see the sights in town.
Your Convention badge will gain you
entrance to all California Park facilities
including the Railroad Museum, Sutter’s Fort, Governor’s Mansion, Leland
Stanford Mansion, etc. The schedule is
constructed to maximize your northern
California experience with a full week’s
list of activities for the whole family.
The following is the schedule with
more details and registration form will
be in your TCA Jan HQ Newsletter.

Gulf Coast Chapter Outing to the Texas State Railroad by Carl Olson
The GCC held its first ever outing on Oct 2, 2010 at the Texas State
Railroad. Weather-wise, it was a great
sunny day with temperatures in the
low 60’s in the morning and increasing to the low 80’s in the afternoon.
My initial target was to have 20 people
sign up for the event, but we ended up
with 32! All but one person was able
to make the trip.
Many in the group, including myself, elected to arrive in Palestine the
day before the event. This enabled us
to have a fresh start Saturday morning,
plus it eliminated any potential traffic delays coming from the Houston
area. We started arriving at the Palestine Depot around 10:00 AM Saturday
morning to pick up our boarding and
food tickets. For those who wanted to
take photos (and we took lots of them)
of the locomotive, rolling stock and
structures, there was plenty of time to
do so.
For those who may not be aware,
the railroad is now run by the American
Heritage Railways group which also
owns the Durango and Silverton and
the Great Smoky Railroad. Our consist was pulled by No. 300, a Baldwin
2-8-0 that was built in 1917, and converted several years ago to run on distillate fuel. No. 300 had gone through
a partial nine-month 1472 restoration,
which was completed in September
2009. The exteriors of the engine and
tender were also restored; they are periodically cleaned to the point that the
unit looks like it just came out of the
paint shop. Behind the locomotive and
tender we had 5 restored passenger
cars that were clean and painted in red:
the Texas State Railroad color. The
Page 6
engineer, Vance Nickerson, told me
that when they restore any of the passenger cars it is done to Amtrak specifications. The information I got from
Shelly Rich, the Railroad’s Reservations Manager, is that they had to add
an additional car to the consist as they
were full and needed to have available
seats for walk-ups.
I took the liberty to ride in the
engine cab (of course at a cost) from
Palestine to Rusk. This turned out to
be a great opportunity, since I have
never ridden in a cab for any length of
time. Periodically, I have been able to
get short rides in the cabs of the Mikados on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic
Railroad, but being able to ride in a cab
for this distance was one of my great
adventures. Riding for that distance
in the cab, you get a real sensation of
what it was like for those individuals
who did this for a living. Everyone in
the cab had to wear ear plugs as the
noise level was high, which was attributed to the whistle, blow downs,
exhaust from the stack, exhaust being emitted from the steam chest, etc.
Also, there was never a moment that
the engine was not rocking back and
forth, so being a passenger in the cab
required me to hold onto the grab bars.
On the way to Rusk, the engineer
had to stop the train a couple of times
so that the fireman could go out and
lubricate new truck bearings that had
been getting hot on previous trips. On
this particular day, the temperature inside the cab was very comfortable, but
as the engineer and fireman told me, it
gets quite hot in the summer - like 135
degrees F. During the whole ride, the
fire box door was kept open to allow
a draft into the boiler – temp inside
the boiler was running 2,500 to 3,000
degrees F. The fire box door is only
about 5 to 6 inches in diameter.
Most of the trip was on flat terrain, but half-way to our destination,
we encountered a 1.5% grade, where
you could feel and hear the locomotive
laboring.
While riding in the cab, I got to
speak with Vance Nickerson, the engineer, and learned that at one time he
was a late prewar and early postwar
collector of Lionel trains. He still has
his collection, but it is stored away
in boxes in his closets, as he is now
into building live steam and diesel engines. It takes him anywhere from 3
to 6 months to build a live steam engine and tender, and once he has the
basic unit done, it takes an additional
6 months to do all the detail work.
The round trip on the train takes
about 4 hours, which includes a stop
over at Rusk to have lunch and for the
railroad to service and turn the engine
on the wye for its return trip to Palestine. On the trip back, I elected to
travel in the climate controlled coach,
while Mike Lewis rode in the engine
cab. While in the coach, I had the opportunity to speak with several of the
chapter members about their experiences on the excursion. The consensus was that they really enjoyed it and
are looking forward to participating in
future trips.
I’ll have to say the Railroad did an
outstanding job of providing us with an
enjoyable ride, good food, and entertainment, plus Mother Nature helped
by providing us with great weather.
