Unimog E-News 03/2014 — News 1
The stage is set: starting signal for the new extreme off-road Unimog.
It comes into its own on difficult terrain and steep gradients. And on this occasion too, the Unimog U 4023 / U 5023 with its
unique capabilities created a good impression. The first series production extreme off-road Unimog of the new
generation rolled off the assembly line in Wörth. The start of production was celebrated by the staff of Mercedes-Benz
Special Trucks together with guests from politics, the press, and from industry.
The party was given a powerful opening with a “generation drive” that reflected a small section of the 63-year-old history of the
Unimog. Proudly, Yaris Pürsün, Head of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, climbed out of the brand-new Unimog U 5023 and welcomed the participants at the event. He emphasised the unique success story of this type of vehicle. “The new extreme off-road
Unimog set new standards in the off-road sector. They are impressive with their ability to conquer any terrain and master any
challenge – whether it is fighting forest fires, dealing with floods or in opencast mining. The Unimog is an allrounder – we were
able to extend and increase these capabilities in spite of the huge challenges that Euro VI entails.

That is truly a major achievement!”
From the first draft to the start of production, the new Unimog generation bears the hallmarks of the staff at Wörth. Back in
April 2013, the extreme off-road Unimog was introduced at an event in Wörth celebrating the market launch. Since then, the
staff have been working at top speed to prepare for the start of the series.
The new Unimog generation was designed independently by the Development Department of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks
but also benefits from the proximity to the large scale production of Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The fact that they are able to
share the production process in Wörth ensures highest manufacturing efficiency and quality assurance.
Besides innovative, more powerful and fuel-efficient Euro VI engines, the vehicle highlights include the newly designed interior
and the new mid-engine design that improves driving dynamics, both onroad and off-road, compared with the previous model.
Only just born, the new series was already awarded its first title: the readers of „Off Road“ specialist magazine chose the
extreme off-road Unimog as the best off-road vehicle of the year in the „Special Vehicles“ category - for the tenth time in
succession. That was a proud success that proves that the new U 4023 / U 5023 set standards in terms of robustness and
off-road qualities.
