appreciates small business
like your Chamber does. Small
business is how big business
starts out. Small business is
the most effective way to relaunch the economy and re-hire
workers after a recession. 90%
of Chamber Partners are small
businesses. This month we
honor and support our small
business job creators, at the
same time we accelerate our pursuit of large manufacturing
enterprises to our region.
These efforts go hand-in-hand. For every 100 new
manufacturing jobs we recruit to our region (or retain
by providing sufficient talent and trained workers), over
$240,000 of sales are generated for restaurants; nearly
$200,000 gets generated to buy home furnishings and
clothing.
At the same time, we recognize small business people
are extremely busy, sometimes too busy to come out to
Chamber coffee hours like the one May 31, sponsored by
Stewart-Richey Construction, or even the Business After
Hours on May 21, sponsored by Van Meter Insurance.
That’s why the Chamber is introducing new benefits that our
Partners can use to promote their business and boost sales
without leaving the shop. Look for more online tools, such
as SizeUp, that we rolled-out last month.
And no matter how busy you are Mr. and Mrs. Small

A Birmingham, Alabama native, Rutledge
Wood learned the art of restoration at a
young age. His father taught him about
buying, restoring and selling new and
old vehicles, and Rutledge has used that
knowledge to create a very successful career.
His first on-air appearance was on NASCAR Live on the SPEED Channel, which led
to his first hosting gig on SPEED Road Tour
Challenge. Next came hosting Trackside
Live, being a roving reporter for NASCAR
RaceDay fueled by Sunoco, and being
part of NASCAR Smarts. This is Rutledge’s
eighth year with SPEED and NASCAR.

and passion for people landed him a role as co-host of Top Gear
on the History Channel. The show is in
its fourth season of delving deep into the
history of the automobile, celebrating the
art of driving with super-cars and extreme
stunts, reviewing cars and conducting celebrity interviews.
Rutledge currently resides in Georgia and
loves spending time with his girls -- his wife
Rachel and his two beautiful daughters.

The percentage of disciplinary referrals has gone down approximately
65-70%. Two years ago I had a 2-inch binder full of referrals, but
after implementation of The Leader in Me, I have a folder with only a
handful of referrals. The Leader in me process allows students to take
responsibility for their own actions!

Our school started with a staff-wide book study of The Leader in Me,
which was a key factor in getting everyone’s buy-in. Once we had the
teachers’ buy-in we fully implemented the process with our students
and were able to see signs of responsibility form the beginning. Our
students now apply for jobs within their classroom and the entire
school. They lead morning meetings, greet our visitors and even have
lunch with Bowling Green community leaders. These things would never
have happened in the past.

CHAMBER SELECTS 2013 SMALL BUSINESS
PERSON OF THE YEAR: David Holland
At a Chamber news conference April 23,
David Holland was awarded one of the
Chamber’s most important recognitions, the
Small Business Person of the Year. Holland,
who started Signature Signs & Ad Specialties
in 1995 after a 19-year career with Thomas
Printing, also owns and operates Suitable for
Framing. Between the two establishments,
Holland employs 15 people and participates in
his family’s real estate holding company.
Holland’s wife, Karen and their four children
were kept hidden by Doug Gorman-- who had
nominated Holland-- until the announcement
was made at Chamber headquarters.
Besides creating jobs, Holland is perhaps best
known for bringing the Kiwanis Club’s Soap Box
Derby race back to Bowling Green and helping
to make it the third-largest soap box race in
the world. Over 1,500 young people have
participated in the derby over the years, and
through Holland’s efforts, the Commonwealth
donated property to Warren County to establish
the permanent Soap Box Derby track at Phil
Moore Park.

Leadership South Central
Kentucky is go for launch!
Based on the Chamber’s highly selective
Leadership Bowling Green program, Leadership
SCKY takes leadership immersion training to the
next level. From applications submitted, just
20-25 individuals will be selected to participate in
Leadership SCKY.
During the monthly sessions, the class studies
regional strengths and challenges through lectures,
discussions, tours and role-playing activities. The
program begins with an orientation in August. All
materials, meals, and lodging are included in the
tuition fee of $1,100.
The Chamber is pleased to announce it is accepting
applications for the Pilot Class of Leadership SCKY.

The Chamber is in the planning stages for this year’s Washington D.C. Fly-In
Event where Partners meet with Kentucky Senators and Representatives and hear
about the business before Congress that affects our businesses. Our goal is to
make this year’s event our best ever. But to do that, we need your input!
