Afscheid/Saying goodbye

The Summer with its rain is almost on its end. The Fall meetings have been scheduled. Some of you have seen
each other when saying goodbye to Adrie de Vries. She was one of our longtime members. Saying goodbye has
many emotions. With the number of stories and the great dedication towards the club, we can feel blessed to
keep her memory alive. Her son in law who guided her many times became part of the club as well. We wish
him and his loved ones well and invite them to stay in to our club.
We also like to see those who are renewing their Dutch passports in Tampa. Make it your club for information,
sharing stories and to keep our Dutch roots alive.
I am writing this while being in Holland. The windmill at the end of
the road is turning and demonstrating the old fashion way of using wind; to grind grain for
bread. We did not say goodbye to the windmill as we now have many more generating energy again. The Dutch are inventive and not saying ‘goodbye’ but remake the past!
In this issue there is a call for remembering the past and how it has benefited you in your life
in the USA. Mark Zegeling is looking into making a documentary after his visits in the USA.

A call from Mark Zegeling, who gave a lecture about the history of the Delft Blue houses
KLM is handing out to first class passengers.
On his tour he met lots of interesting people. A producer is interested to make a documentary. Who is willing to talk about funny or
embarrassing moments when settling as a Dutch person in the United States.
Mark tells me in Dutch:
“Tijdens onze tournee door Noord Amerika heb ik regelmatig berichtjes gepost op mijn
Facebook-pagina en veel van mijn oud-collega’s uit de televisiewereld hebben me gevolgd.
Afgelopen week ben ik door een producent benaderd voor een nieuw tv-programma, over
Nederlanders die zich (liefst permanent, bijvoorbeeld in de jaren vijftig of zestig) in NoordAmerika hebben gevestigd en de Nederlandse cultuur en tradities nog in ere houden. Ik heb
zoveel hartelijke mensen ontmoet, en was vaak getroffen door de onderlinge verbondenheid
dat ik een programma over dit onderwerp helemaal zie zitten. Misschien zijn er in Tampa of
omgeving mensen die het leuk vinden over Nederland en hun afkomst te praten (en ze
hoeven daarbij geen Nederlands meer te spreken, de interviews mogen ook in het Engels
plaatsvinden). We zijn nu bezig met de eerste research en als het allemaal doorgaat komen
we tzt een paar dagen opnamen maken in Florida en interviewen een aantal Nederlanders
over hun leven aldaar, in vergelijking met de vroegere woonplaats, en welke typisch
Nederlandse gebruiken en (familie)tradities (klein en groot) zij nog steeds koesteren en met elkaar vieren. Het moet een positief en vrolijk
programma worden, en de insteek wordt dat we Nederlanders in Amerika iets komen brengen als aanleiding voor een gesprek (als een soort
koerier uit Nederland): iets dat zij missen van thuis en niet meteen om de hoek kunt kopen en wat gekoppeld is aan een (nostalgisch) gevoel.
Het mag iets tastbaars zijn, een voorwerp, een bepaald kostuum of carnavalsmaster, een poffertjespan, de oranje wimpel van een
Nederlandse vlag, een foto van het ouderlijk huis, een videoboodschap van iemand die ze lang niet hebben gezien, Nederlands snoep of
etenswaren uit de streek waar hij/zij is opgegroeid, bepaalde muziek uit hun jeugd, een recept van iemand die hen dierbaar was, etc als er
maar een verhaal of herinnering aan vast zit.” (Mark Zegeling.)

No hurricanes in the vicinity but record amounts of rain struck the bay area. Roads were flooded and
some houses were only accessible by boat after heavy rains pounded the streets in the midst of the
summer. Tampa International Airport received 11.7 inches of rain during the month of July and thousands were without electrical power. Sandbags and umbrella’s were in high demand. Boy, we sure had
one heck of a super wet summer!
Obituaries
Adrie (Adriana Cornelia Maria) De Vries passed away at her home in Dunedin on July 22. She was 93
years old and a long time and avid member of the Holland Club of the Tampa Bay area.
Born in Dongen (Brabant) Adrie started her career as a teacher in Curaçao where she met her husband. They later moved to Florida. She raised 5 kids and had a strong mind of her own. ’You could tell
her anything but she followed her own way. Like the time she went to a fortune-teller who predicted
Adrie to become 92. She did not listen and went on to become 93. That’s exactly the way mom did all
her life. Fantastic!” her oldest son remembered with a big smile during Adrie’s funeral on Monday, July
27 at Sylvan Abbey Memorial, 2853 Sunset Point Rd. in Clearwater,
The last few months of her life Adrie had some health issues. The very last time we saw her at the
Holland Club was at our general meeting in February.

Twee-daagse paspoortbalie in Tampa
Nederlanders die niet ver willen reizen voor een nieuw paspoort moeten er snel bij zijn. Op maandag 31
augustus en dinsdag 1 September kunnen zij terecht bij het speciale ‘Mobiele Paspoort Station’ in de Hilton Garden Inn Tampa/east Brandon, 10309 Highland Manor Drive in Tampa 33610

Het is belangrijk dat men voor 21 augustus via e-mail het aanvraag-formulier en de
benodigde documenten (zie website www.rsonac.org/paspoort) toestuurt naar
[email protected] , daar zij graag deze willen nakijken, gezien men
in Tampa alleen complete aanvragen kan accepteren. (Na 1 september dient men
voor deze aanvragen een afspraak te maken in Miami, Washington DC of in Nederland.)
Aanvrager dient in Tampa persoonlijk aanwezig te zijn om de aanvraag te tekenen
en vingerafdrukken te maken voor het nieuwe paspoort.
