The Baylor community lost a cherished member this spring, with the
passing of Ron Stewart, whose battle with cancer ended March 22.
Stewart was a thoughtful and brilliant teacher, and during his 26year Baylor career he was a math department chairman, baseball
coach, kayak instructor, and dorm parent. He was also one of the
Southeast’s most prominent kayakers and was active in river
conservation efforts. In 2007, he received the rarely awarded American
Whitewater Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his longtime dedication to the preservation and access of whitewater rivers.
Stewart lived on campus with his wife, Lorraine, also a faculty
member. Their daughter, Michelle, graduated from Baylor in 2005;
their son, Jeff, is a 2007 graduate.
Senior Class Grant Program
For the past three years, the senior class has opted to award grants
to various school departments rather than purchase a commemorative
item for the school. This year, a total of $14,000 was raised for the
grant program through a variety of fundraisers. An advisory committee
then reviewed proposals and determined how to distribute the funds.
Included among the more than 20 awards are new recording
equipment, a digital camera, a kayak, a video camera, and a MacBook.
Previous gifts have included partial funding for the media center in
the student center, crew equipment, partial funding for a digital
microscope and a computerized telescope, and an iMac computer
for the art department. The program was developed and organized
through the Annual Fund office to inspire seniors to become
philanthropic leaders.
Plans are underway for the next Celebrations Baylor Auction, which
is set for March 14, 2009, in the Baylor fieldhouse. Last year’s event
raised $400,000 for the school’s Annual Fund, which directly benefits
faculty, programs, and students. The funds raised from this event
add significantly to the quality of programs and experiences for
Baylor students. The auction theme, A World of Difference, is
symbolic of how Baylor students make a positive difference in the
world, as well as how the world affects Baylor students in their
everyday learning. Special thanks to Lee Murray ’71, Patti Frierson,
and Mary Kilbride, who are already hard at work as the current chairs.

WINTER HIGHLIGHTS
BASKETBALL
Brett Murray’s drive and layup with 48 seconds left gave the Red
Raiders a two-point lead, and two free throws by James Feher iced
the game as Baylor’s boys’ basketball team upset top-seeded Father
Ryan 41-37 to win the tournament championship of the newly formed
Mid-East region. Baylor eventually lost 58-53 in the state quarterfinals
and finished the year 17-11. The Baylor girls were 14-12, including
a 56-42 win over Battle Ground Academy in the first round of the
region tournament. The Raiders then lost to state runner-up Webb
in the region quarterfinals.

SWIMMING AND DIVING
The 2008 Baylor boys’ swim team won all three relay events, setting
new state meet records in each, to become the first school in Tennessee
history to record its 20th state championship. Baylor set state meet
records in the 200 medley relay (Reese Shirey, Brad Hamilton, Greg
Roop, and Josh Sosna), the 200 freestyle relay (Hamilton, Shirey,
Michael Vredeveld, and Sosna), and the 400 free relay (Shirey, Matt
Limerick, Nathan Vredeveld, and Hamilton). Michael Vredeveld won
the 50 freestyle, following his father Walter, who won the event in
1975 (see related story on page 22).
The Baylor girls set two new state meet records and won the state
championship, ending Harpeth Hall’s string of seven straight state
titles and tying Harpeth Hall with nine all-time team titles. Baylor

BOWLING
Needing a win to advance to the state tournament, the Baylor boys’
bowling team nipped McCallie 14-13 in the district tournament.
The Red Raiders eventually lost to St. Benedict, the state runner-up.
Baylor ended with a 12-6 record. The Baylor girls finished with a
3-15 record.
set new state meet records in the 200 medley relay (Sarah List, Alison
Lusk, Erin Simpson, and Arden Pitman) and in the 200 freestyle relay
(Sloane Pitman, List, and Lusk). All-American junior Sloane Pitman
was a state champion in the 50 freestyle, and Lusk won the 100
breaststroke title in another All-American performance.
All-American junior Jordan Mauney was second in the 1-meter
diving with 464.50 points. Baylor claimed victory easily in the
combined, and Baylor coach Dan Flack was named Coach of the Year
for both boys and girls teams.
Mauney also competed in the USA Spring East Junior Olympic
National Diving Championships, finishing 11th in the one-meter
event and 18th on the three-meter board in the 16-18 Mens division.

WRESTLING
Four individual champions led the Baylor wrestling team to the school’s
fifth straight championship at the 2008 traditional state tournament.
Baylor shared the state title with Father Ryan, with both teams totaling
275 points. Senior Bailey Whitaker (pictured above right) joined Jordan
Leen as the only wrestler in Baylor history to win four state championships, pinning all of his opponents on the way to the 125-pound
title. Other individual champions were sophomore Cole Hayes (130),
freshman Stuart Doster (112), and the tournament’s Best Wrestler,
eighth-grader Zach Watson (103). Baylor also repeated as the state
duals champions with victories over Montgomery Bell Academy (643), Brentwood Academy (41-26), and Father Ryan (36-24) in the
championship match.

TRACK AND FIELD
Coach Bill McMahan was named Coach of the Year for girls’ track
and field by the Chattanooga Times Free Press. His team won the
2008 state championship title. Individual champions were Malena
Kellermann in the pentathlon and the shot put, Abbie Dill in the high
jump, Sarah Gawthrop in the 400 meter dash, and Hannah Jumper in
the 800 meter run. The girls also won championships in the 4 x 800
meter relay (Jumper, Mary Stagmaier, Paige Elliott, and Mary Shelton
Bryant) and the 4 x 400 meter relay (Stagmaier, Elliott, Kate McBrien,
and Gawthrop). Four school records were set – Kellermann in the
shot put and 100 meter hurdles, Kiera Payne in the 100 meter dash,
and the 4 x 800 relay team. Kellermann also set a school record in
the long jump and now holds three Baylor track and field records.
The Baylor boys had four individual state champions, with Bill
Matthews (right) winning the 3200, the 1600, and the 800 meter
runs in a single day and Wesley Idlette (far right) claiming the 300
meter hurdles. Brentwood Academy held off the Raiders in the last
race to leave Baylor with the runner-up trophy. Winning the final
event, the 1600 meter relay, the Eagles finished with 117 points.
Baylor had 108, and McCallie was third with 93.5.
BASEBALL
Baylor won a district championship series over McCallie, took the
region championship with a win over Battle Ground Academy and
won a sub-state series over Father Ryan to advance to the TSSAA
baseball final four, where the team finished as state runner-up to
Brentwood Academy. The Red Raiders posted another strong season
record at 33-8. Coach Gene Etter also picked up his 700th career
win this season.
TENNIS
The Baylor girls’ tennis team finished the season with a 9-6 record
and advanced to the state tournament semifinal round, where they
lost to champion GPS. Currant Scruggs and Katie Thornton were
runners-up in the state doubles tournament. Erika Marschall and Kelly
Scruggs also qualified for the state doubles tournament.Orlando
Lourenco and MacGregor Wallis represented the Baylor boys at the
state doubles tournament. Baylor had a 4-9 team record.
CREW
Baylor Crew rowed away with four state rowing titles at this spring’s
Dogwood Regatta in Oak Ridge. Baylor claimed the First Varsity 8
titles for boys (Coxswain Rishi Dixit, Ryan O’Malley, Travis Millsaps,
George Cherry, Frankie Green, Whit Chesnutt, Clay Hall, Walker Westbrook,
and Henry Cooper) and girls (Coxswain Paige Storey, Peyton Aaron,
Danielle Burt, Emily James, Molly Roberts, Katie Mead, Stephanie Ashley,
Austin Morrison, and Brindley Mitchell), the Boys Second Varsity 8
(Coxswain Christine Waite, Foster Grissim, Josh Fairchild, Walker
Harrison, Larry Page, Ben Yang, Tommy Malpass, Parker Stoker, and
Will McCartney), and the Boys First Varsity 4 (Coxswain Rishi Dixit,
Ryan O’Malley, Travis Millsaps, George Cherry, and Frankie Green). The
boys’ first and second Varsity 8 boats were also selected to compete
in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America’s national championship regatta.
SOCCER
The Baylor boys’ soccer team, last year’s state champ, returned to
the state final four this year but lost in the semifinal round to Christian
Brothers. The team finished 12-3-2 and was district champion with
a 2-0 win over McCallie and region runner-up as a result of a 3-0
loss to eventual state champ Father Ryan. The Red Raiders allowed
only seven goals in 17 games.
FENCING
The Baylor fencing team, led by two-time individual state champion
Tyler Brasfield, won its third consecutive state championship in foil
this spring, defeating David Brainerd 28-8. Baylor finished as state
runner-up to Memphis University School in epee competition.
LACROSSE
Baylor’s girls’ lacrosse team, in just its second competitive season,
posted a 10-4 record and enjoyed a top 10 state ranking for most of
the year. The Baylor boys finished 4-9.
SOFTBALL
The Baylor softball team finished with 17-16 record and placed third
in the region tournament with a win over Father Ryan before losing
a sub-state series at Briarcrest.
MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
Leo Born scored 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the
Baylor boys’ basketball team to a 43-42 win over Cleveland and the
school’s first-ever TVAC basketball championship.
The Baylor middle school volleyball team finished the season with
a perfect 10-0 record and the TVAC championship. Callie Hildebrand
served nine aces and had seven kills in the two tournament games
to lead the Red Raiders.
Middle school girls won the TVAC track and field championship.
Led by individual champion Blakesly Warren’s round of 43, the
Baylor Middle School girls’ golf team won the TVAC championship.
Warren combined with Kate Collom, who shot 46, for a winning team
total of 89.
The Vredevelds: A Baylor Swimming Dynasty
When the record board on the wall of the aquatic center was updated
this year, one name remained — an affirmation of one family’s
dominance in the sport.
For more than three decades, the Vredeveld family has been a huge
part of Baylor swimming, giving the term “gene pool” a whole new
meaning. In 1975, Walter Vredeveld won the 50-free and 100-free at
the state meet. Four years later, his brother Roger followed with state
championships in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
Roger was also a member of the 400-free relay team along with
Olympic gold medalist Geoff Gaberino, Tom Brigham, and Martin Boles,
that posted the nation’s top time and set the school’s and state’s longest
lasting swimming record with a time of 3:06.82 in the 400 free relay.
Fast forward to this season and Baylor’s 400-free relay team
comprised of Roger’s son, Nathan, along with Reese Shirey, Matt
Limerick, and Brad Hamilton. The four broke the 29-year-old school
and state records with a time of 3:06.52.
Meanwhile, Walter’s son, Michael, a senior boarding student from
Jesup, Ga., topped his father’s state time in the 50-free with a swim
of 21.28. He was also a member of the 200-free relay team along
with Brad, Reese, and Josh Sosna, who set school and state records
this season with a time of 1:23.47. At the Eastern championship in
Pennsylvania, Michael was part of the winning 200-medley and 200free relay teams.
One month later at the Junior Nationals in Orlando, Nathan and
Michael joined Reese and Josh to break the 400-free relay record
again with a time of 3:06.18.
Nathan says he has always had his eye on breaking his dad’s 400free relay record. “When Josh Sosna and Greg Roop came to Baylor
in eighth grade to join Matt Limerick and me, I knew we had a
chance, and it was just a question of what year we would do it,”
says Nathan. That chance became reality at the state meet in a contest
against a strong Brentwood team. “The race was so close, I almost
forgot about breaking it until after it was over and my dad came
down to congratulate us,” recalls Nathan. “I love the opportunity
to swim for the same program he did, and I’m very lucky to be a
part of this Baylor team because we are getting back up to the high
national ranking the program is known for.”

Not to be outdone, Roger’s 12-year-old daughter Kristen is now
listed on the Middle School record board as a member of the girls’
400-free relay team that captured a first place finish at the Southeastern
Middle School Championships. She also won the 50-free with a meet
record time of 25.16.
Watching his children came to love the sport and participate in
the same program has been a special experience for Roger, who also
coached the Baylor team for four years and was an assistant coach
an additional four years. He currently teaches history in the Upper
School. “My swimming career at Baylor has touched just about every
facet of the sport, and I have loved every bit of it. It has been a place
for me to build relationships and to work with great people toward
common goals, and it has been wonderful to see my children find
similar satisfaction in their experience. The energy and excitement
surrounding this team is phenomenal, and it has been exciting to
watch all the Baylor swimmers and divers grow and make lasting
memories in this kind of environment.”

Baylor’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian Named
Michael Schulson
Val Hansen
Michael Schulson was named the
valedictorian, and Val Hansen was
named salutatorian for Baylor’s
Class of 2008.
Schulson and Hansen are both
National Merit Finalists and members of the Cum Laude Society
and the National Honor Society.
In addition to their many academic accomplishments, both have
managed to be active in a variety
of extra-curricular activities.
Schulson was president of the
Round Table and an active member of Walkabout, serving as a
student instructor for the last three
years. He was a peer tutor, active
with community service, president
of Earth Advocates, and a member
of the Political Forum, Student
Academic Council, and Red Circle. Schulson will attend Yale University in the fall.
Hansen was a member of the
cross-country team, served as secretary of the Round Table, and
was active in Habitat for Humanity, serving as president her senior
year. She was a founding member
and president of the International
Relations Club, president of Helping the Hungry, and a member of
Red Circle, Peer Support Network,
and the Tower yearbook staff. She
also served as a peer tutor, and
Writing Center peer tutor. Hansen
will attend the University of North
Carolina in the fall.
Schulson Receives Presidential Scholar Award
Baylor senior Michael Schulson is among 139 outstanding high school
seniors selected as a 2008 Presidential Scholar.
“The 2008 Presidential Scholars shine a bright hope on the future
of our country,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.
“Not only have these young graduates demonstrated exemplary
discipline and achievement in academics and the arts, but they have
also exhibited exceptional leadership and service to their local
communities. Their commitment to excellence and contributions to
society reflect the character and innovation necessary to keep America
both competitive economically and collaborative in overcoming
challenges within our global community.”
The Presidential Scholars had the opportunity to select their most
inspiring and challenging teacher to travel to Washington, D.C., to
receive a Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of
Education and to participate in the recognition events. Schulson’s
choice was English Instructor Chris Watkins.
Seniors Chelsea Dommert and Anton Fleissner were also selected
as candidates for the program.
Haelie Chung Receives Siemens Award
The College Board recognized Haelie Chung ’08
as a 2007-08 state winner of the Siemens Award
for Advanced Placement. The Siemens Foundation
honors one male and female student from each
state for their exceptional performance in AP math
and science. Chung earned perfect scores in three
AP exams her junior year. In addition to receiving
a $2,000 college scholarship, Chung was listed with other winners
in a full-page advertisement in USA Today. She will attend Cornell
University. (Read Haelie’s senior profile on page 15.)
Twelve Attend Harvard Model Congress
Twelve upper school students were selected to attend the Harvard
Model Congress, held in Boston in late February. Students played
the roles of congressional representatives, debating legislative solutions
for current national problems. Students had to research the issues
and submit position papers in preparation for the four-day conference.
While the program is technically not a competition, each committee
of 30-60 students names outstanding participants. Six Baylor students
earned that honor this year. Senior Bryn Pitt and freshman Mohini Lal
each won two awards: best delegate and best ranking member for
their party. Other winners included seniors Chelsea Dommert and
Radhika Patel, and juniors David Miller and Mark Mahvi. Elyse Higley,
Cat Spratt, Jon Diamond, Madison Fuller, and Katie Wilson were also
selected to represent Baylor at this year’s event, attended by more
than 1,000 students from across the nation.
Southern Writers Contest Winners Named
Thirteen students were winners in the 2008 Young Southern Writers
Contest sponsored by the Arts and Education Council and UTC’s
English department. Middle School winners were Will Arnold, Chase
Beard, River Cole, Paige Elliot, Payton Fields, Sam Glascock, Bess Turner,
Lauren Johnson, Scharley Meyer, Shauna Bowes, and Matalin Varner.
Upper School winners were Samantha Everett, Samantha Craig, and
Grant Wood. The Baylor students were among 3,600 area students in
grades K-12 who competed in the annual contest.

Concert Choir Named Grand Champions
The Baylor Players presented Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” as the
spring play. The production included a cast of 36 actors and a tech

Sophomore Doreen Xu was the
third honorable mention winner
in a national essay contest for high
school students with her essay
titled, “What About Peace?” She
was also the Indiana state winner
and the East Central Division winner (Indiana, Kentucky, Mischigan, Ohio, and West Virginia) of
the 2008 Christopher Columbus
essay, sponsored by the Daughters
of the American Revolution. Her
essay has been forwarded to be
judged by the National Italian
American Foundation.
A group of talented Baylor students joined more than 300 students for the YMCA-sponsored
Southeastern High School Model
United Nations (SHSMUN) program in November. For three days,
these students debated issues ranging from the International Law of
the Seas to the Israeli/Lebanon
conflict and wrote resolutions in
a way that mirrored the United
Nations. Baylor represented the
United Kingdom and Italy.
Bryn Pitt ’08 presided over the
conference in the role of Secretary
General, Chelsea Dommert ’08 won
recognition as outstanding delegate for the Security Council, and
Cat Spratt, a junior, was selected
to chair the Committee on Legal
Issues for next year’s conference.
The three were also named to the
SHSMUN All-Star Delegation to
compete in the National High
School Model United Nations
conference in New York. Baylor’s
delegation of 15 was the largest
to date. Other members included

East Band and Orchestra Clinic
auditions, and as a result, the

perform at the All-State East Festival in Gatlinburg: Anton Fleissner

band; and David Hull ’09, fourth
chair, bassoon/white band (fourth

Baylor’s concert choir was awarded “grand champion” honors at
the recent 2008 All-Star Music Festival in Florida. This talented
group of students received the highest overall score in the vocal
category after competing against more than 20 vocal ensembles from
schools throughout the U.S. They also earned a superior rating and
a first place award in their class (mixed men and women, AA size
school). In addition, the concert choir garnered a “superior” rating
at the J.B. Lyle District Chorus festival at UTC. The festival included
judging in performance and music sight-reading. The choir is directed
by Vic Oakes, and includes Beau Bagley, Brooke Breedwell, Anastasia
Cimino, Abbey Davis, Liz Dill, Clifford Eberhardt, Jenna Elliott, Kyle
Emory, C.J. Enloe, Sean Guerry, Mia Hayes, Evelyn Hooper, Vanita
Jefferson, Young Eun Kim, John Hur, Jiaxin Li, Kevin Manning, Houston
Massey, Taylor Page, Radhika Patel, Courtney Rhodes, Rebecca Schmitt,
Dima White, and Joseph Yantis.

students scored high enough to qualify for the festival, becoming the first
from Baylor to do so.

Anton represented Baylor after
winning first place in the school’s
2008 Senior Shakespeare Competition. Mary Ireland ’08 placed second in the school competition, and
Rishi Dixit ’08 came in third. Fleissner, an organist, also received recognition in various musical competitions this spring. In separate
competitions sponsored by the
Chattanooga Music Teachers Association, Anton placed second
among high school senior soloists
and second overall among all high
school performers. He also won
the Edwin Lemare Organ Performance Award from the Chattanooga Music Club. Anton used the
monetary awards from these competitions to attend Shorter College
Summer Arts Institute in June.

with her poster, “Phi and the Human Body.” Alyssa is an honors
geometry student and competed
in the ninth and tenth grade division. The contest was sponsored
by the UTC Department of Mathematics and BlueCross BlueShield

Robert Maynard ’08 was recog-
nized for his Leadership Baylor
capstone project by The Sanctuary, Inc. at their annual fundraiser.
The Sanctuary is a residential pro-
gram for homeless women with
a history of substance abuse, prostitution and incarceration. Maynard coordinated the collection
of more than 300 pounds of clothing for the St. Timothy’s Thrift
Shop, with proceeds benefiting
The Sanctuary.

this summer’s Jim Pearce Leadership Trip. The trip was initiated
in 1992 to honor Baylor juniors
of admirable character whose selfless efforts might otherwise go
unrecognized. Each year a group
of students is nominated by faculty and their peers and selected to
travel to the snowy peaks of Aspen for nine days of backpacking,
mountaineering, and trout fishing.

John Roy Baylor, Alexander Guerry and Barks Recipients Named
O.B. Andrews and Jumonville Awards Recipients Named
Baylor honored nine of its outstanding student leaders with Leadership Awards that are the highest the school bestows. Recipients
are selected by a vote of the faculty.
The O.B. Andrews Awards, presented each year to the male and
female students who are judged as the best all-around seniors by the
vote of the Upper School student body, were given to Val Hansen and
Michael Schulson.
The John Roy Baylor Award is presented to seniors who have
contributed richly to the school both as citizens and scholars. Named
for Baylor’s visionary founder and first headmaster, the John Roy
Baylor Award for 2008 was presented to Michael Schulson and Val
Hansen. Schulson will attend Yale, and Hansen will attend the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
William Probasco is the winner of this year’s Alexander Guerry Award.
Named for Baylor’s second headmaster, the award is presented to
a senior who contributed richly to the position of honor and right
at Baylor. Mr. Guerry served Baylor from 1913-29 and was headmaster
from 1926-29. Probasco will attend High Point University.
The Herbert B. Barks, Sr., Award is presented to boarding students
who have contributed richly to the spirit and quality of life of the
residential program. This honor is named for Baylor’s third headmaster,
who joined the Baylor faculty in 1924 and served as headmaster from
1929-64. The Class of 2008 honorees are Kristy Snider, Judy Wu and
Ben Yang. Snider is from Charleston, Tenn., and lived in Hunter Hall.
She will attend Carson-Newman. A resident of Taiwan, Wu lived in
Riverfront Hall; she will attend the University of Washington. Yang
is from China and lived in Probasco Hall; he will attend the University
of Chicago.
The Herbert B. Barks, Jr., Award is presented to seniors who have
contributed richly to the Baylor spirit. Dr. Barks was headmaster
from 1971-88 and is remembered for his charismatic leadership and
remarkable enthusiasm. This year’s honorees are Anton Fleissner,
Justin Knight, and Radhika Patel. Fleissner made a late decision to
attend Princeton University, Knight will attend Georgia Southern
University, and Patel will attend Boston Unversity.
The Jumonville Awards, given to the best all-around male and female
juniors as determined by a vote of Upper School students, were
presented to Elin Bunch and David Burt.
Middle School Honors Student Leaders
Academic awards went to the top two scholars in the eighth grade
class at the eighth grade commencement exercises on May 28. Lucas
Conwell was named valedictorian, and Paige Elliott was named
salutatorian.
The Alexander Guerry Award, named for Baylor’s second headmaster
and presented to Middle School students who contribute richly to
the position of honor and right at Baylor, went to eighth graders
Lucas Conwell and Kaki Pruett.

to a senior or seniors who deserve special commendation. This award
is given only in years the faculty feels the need for it. This year’s winners
are Hannah Jones and Othman Djuliarso. Jones will attend Bowdoin
College, and Djuliarso will attend the University of Memphis.

Glenn Ireland II Chairs for Distinguished Teaching Named

Latin instructor Floyd Celapino are
the first recipients of the recently
established Glenn Ireland II Chairs
for Distinguished Teaching.
These two extraordinary faculty
members were selected by their colleagues for their exemplary teaching
and other significant contributions that support the mission of the school.
Appointments are for three years, and include a stipend for each
year and an additional $2,000 to purchase school-related equipment
and supplies or to engage in professional development activities beyond
those afforded by the school. In addition, honorees will receive a
medal to wear for ceremonial events such as graduation and will
retain the title of Ireland Chair throughout their tenure at Baylor.
Up to five Glenn Ireland II Chairs will be appointed on a rotating
basis over the course of the next three years. Special thanks to Glenn
Ireland II ’44 for his generosity in establishing these endowed chairs.

Hall of Fame Honors for Alex Guerry, Jr. and Jack Lupton
Alex Guerry Jr.’35 (left) and Jack Lupton ’44 have been elected to the Look-
out Mountain Hall of Fame. Guerry
(posthumously) and Lupton will join
eight others to be inducted Sunday,
August 17, at 4 p.m. in the Lookout
Mountain School gymnasium.
Guerry was Baylor valedictorian in 1935 and a member of the
1935 Mid-South champion tennis team. He and his oldest son, Zan
’67, won two father-son national doubles championships (1966,
1971). He is a member of six halls of fame: Baylor, Greater Chattanooga, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tennessee Tennis, and Southern Tennis.
Lupton played varsity football and basketball while at Baylor but
is best known for his contributions to golf. His leadership paved the
way for the development of The Honors Course and The Golf House
Tennessee. Lupton created, named, and twice won the Lookout
Mountain Swing Ding tournament. He is a member of Greater
Chattanooga, Tennessee and Tennessee Golf halls of fame.

Roscoe Tanner ’69.

Dr. Harry Yeatman ’35 was selected
for the 60th Diamond Edition of
Who’s Who in America. His se-
lection was due to his research in
mosquito control in various parts
of the world while working with
the CDC in Atlanta and the World
Health Organization. He currently

a runner-up finish in the 1980
as a real estate sales associate with
his wife, Mary Helen Abbott, at
Harry Norman Realtors in Atlanta.
John and his wife are proud firsttime grandparents to Landon John
Jonas, born Sept. 25, 2007, to their
daughter, Helen, and son-in-law,
Gabe. Last year, the Abbotts enjoyed a whitewater rafting trip
down the Snake River in Idaho and
a fall trip with UGA alumni to
Provence and the French Riviera.
Bob Couch ’65 , a Mid-South
Champion swimmer at Baylor
and captain of the 1965 team,
continues to have success as a
Master Swimmer. In August 2006,
he swam at the top of his age
group of 55 – 59 in the 400 Long
Course Meters IM and in the 800
LCM Free. In August 2007, he
won three gold medals in the 400
LCM free, the 800 LCM free, and
the 400 LCM IM and placed in
three other events. Bob and his
wife, Mary Ann, live in Choccolocco, Ala.
