EDITOR’SNOTE
W
elcome to this special online
edition of Chun Kuk Do Magazine!
I am thrilled to bring you extensive
coverage of the ITC with many large photos, not to
mention links within the magazine and external
links to vendors and other information!
I really like the cover photo – not only for the
great quality – but for the message it presents.
Check out all those black belts being students,
willing to learn and get better! While all the photos I received for this contest
were great, the votes have spoken. Please congratulate Ron Guptill, this year’s
winner! Ron is the father of a karate family studying under Master Hammersley in Florida. He, his wife Tara, and son Logan are red belts, and daughters
Samantha and Zoe are black belts. 2nd place went Sherri Cordes who captured
this ‘simul-point’ fighting moment, and 3rd place goes to Lindy Woods who took
this great action photo of her talented daughter Andi. Thank you to everyone
who submitted photos!
Returning to this issue is Derrick Stinson’s The Blitz - check out his interview
with Eric Jones! And talking about someone who has accomplished so much
in her young life – read about crossover black belt Sadie Robinson whom I had
the pleasure of meeting at the ITC, on pages 46 and 47. As always, the ITC was
a great experience with excellent seminars and competition! Please enjoy the
photo journey starting on page 7.
At one of the black belts lineups, there was some lively laughter from Mr. Elias
and Ms. McCleary! “We were discussing the 8 components of quality technique,”
explained Mr. Elias, “and we think there should be a 9th component.” There
was silence..... “The Saenz Factor!” he said, showing that well-known Chuck
Elias humor. I know that The Saenz Factor means something to those who have
experienced his teaching, but it especially means something to anyone who
has ever had the honor of being “fine-tuned” at one of his seminars. Want to
experience The Saenz Factor? Come to the next MDS! (dates to be announced)
It is open to all black belts (not to mention a requirement for school owners)!
You will never be the same again!
I know the economy continues to challenge us all, but one way to prepare
for next year’s ITC is to set aside a little each day – you’ll be pleasantly surprised
how your pennies (OK quarters) add up.
Enjoy your journey,
Astrid Fabian

OOPS! I would like to apologize to CKD
black belt (Region 6) Erin Henderson! I
mistakenly included her name in the 2nd

in the Summer 2010 issue of CKD Magazine. Ms. Henderson was promoted to
3rd degree. This is a huge and significant
moment and I congratulate you on your
accomplishment! I’m sorry for the error.

Roderick A. Williams I am a proud parent of two newly awarded
1st degree black belts. Given the economy
and financial struggles we Americans are
faced with, I would like to offer a great
fundraiser our family used which allowed
us to attend ITC 2010. The fundraiser that
did well for us is Gold Canyon (candles,
body, and home items), which pays
participants 40% of total sales. Example:
sell $550 of product, receive $200 for your
cause. If your schools starts selling now for
ITC 2011, it will help students attend who
otherwise may not have the opportunity.

We just had an amazing weekend at our
school (Premier Martial Arts, Aaron Hensley) when we hosted 10x World Champ
Matt Emig. He led 3 seminars on Friday and
one long (5 hours) elite level seminar on
Saturday! Mr. Emig shared his knowledge
of competitive experience on XMA and
Speed Chux. Great teacher and role model
for everyone!

United Fighting Arts Federation
Mission Statement
In October your UFAF Board of Directors
attended an amazing Think-Tank weekend
and much was accomplished, such as the appointment of a Board member in a new position, a finalized Constitution and other plans
for for UFAF’s future! Masters Chuck and
Aaron Norris were very instrumental in all
the decisions being made and had great ideas
with each one. They are so into what is the
right thing for all of us. As Mr. Gallacher said,
“We had another history-making meeting!”
The United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF) is dedicated to providing and facilitating quality martial arts instruction, leading to the most prestigious black belt
ranking certifications in the martial arts world.
Through the disciplined, internal growth of its membership and the development of world class teaching ability and leadership within its ranks, UFAF seeks
to make Chun Kuk Do one of the most recognizable and respected martial arts
styles in the world.
Building on these principles, UFAF is committed to assisting its member schools
in providing a quality martial arts training experience to every student of Chun
Kuk Do, and to enriching and serving the communities in which it is represented
by cultivating high character in the lives of its members.
First, I must congratulate Mr. Reggie Cochran, who was appointed
to the Board and will be working on marketing technologies, an area
much in need of attention! Thank you, Mr. Cochran!
Next, we finally completed (updated) UFAF’s Constitution for the
direction of the Chun Kuk Do style. Poor Mr. Nelson! He has worked
and reworked this document, bringing to meetings a revised edition of
the constitution for review, only to leave with yet more revisions! But
this time I feel it’s final! This important piece of Nelson work is a
much-needed document that will explain to all of us how UFAF works
to further and direct Chun Kuk Do, and to really understand what our
mission is. It will be posted online at www.ufaf.org very soon! Please
make sure to read it!
The United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF) is a worldwide martial arts membership organization founded by Mr. Chuck Norris which provides its member
students, instructors, and schools with Chun Kuk Do (CKD) rank certification,
educational opportunities, Chun Kuk Do news, special events, online community
access, and other services. UFAF is the governing and sanctioning body for the
Chun Kuk Do style, providing technical standards for instruction and advancement in the system.
Chun Kuk Do (CKD) is an American martial arts style, evolved from Korean Tang
Soo Do by Chuck Norris. Chun Kuk Do (“The Universal Way”) is a style with a
deeply-rooted traditional foundation into which many other elements that
complement its fundamentals have been integrated. Chun Kuk Do has come to
emphasize self defense, competition, weapons, grappling, fitness, and more.
With Chun Kuk Do, the martial arts world is an open door.
The weekend wrapped up with Mr. Norris challenging Mr. Cochran
and me to a game of ladder ball. Now I’ve heard of card sharks, and
pool sharks, but a ladder ball shark? Boy, were we set up! Yes, he
beat us, but later I had a great come back. After that, we all had a
chance to see a documentary on Mr. Norris’ second visit to Iraq called:
“ Chuck Norris’ Answering the Call.” It was excellent. I’m hoping
we can all see it at the ITC.

Our grand master Mr. Norris has begun compiling artifacts from his life
and calling it the Chuck Norris Museum, although technically it’s not
really a museum open to the public. I’ve never seen so many artifacts
about his career. Many of his trophies were stored all over, from his
mom’s garage to his brother’s home, and many were misplaced. He has
regained ownership of numerous trophies, with Aaron Norris surprising
him with more as he has been able to locate them. There were his old
black belt certificates, trophies, pictures, paintings, Wieland Norris’
marine uniform and his black belt certificate. The “museum” is not
even close to being completed so I’m sure there are more surprises in
the piles of pictures stacked against the walls. The one item that caught
my eye was a picture of Mr. Norris jogging with President Bush. How
impressive! We’ll keep you posted as to its completion!

So are you getting ready? I have a feeling next year’s ITC will knock
your socks off. As always, we’re planning to bring you the best and
latest information about your Chun Kuk Do training, running a school,
and being the best instructor you can be! What do we have in store?
Well, I can’t tell you until things are finalized, but I have a feeling that
Region 8 will have more people attending next year than any other
region! Take on the challenge, Regional Chairs! I know Carly has
already started to save for her 2011 ITC! Have you?

I just love taking the photos of the seminars, the tournament, and all the fun! So, if you have never

Not enough can be said about our fabulous Las Vegas

swimming, and everything at the spa. It’s a great destination for your family while you immerse yourself in karate!

The Annual Awards Dinner
On Saturday evening we all dressed up in our official UFAF dress uniform (UFAF members) or our
fanciest duds (guests), for a great experience. Mr. & Mrs. Norris and the UFAF Board of Directors
stood in a receiving line so that each of us could meet and shake hands with our leaders.
After a great meal, the onstage fun included a slide show, many raffled prizes (with the money
donated to KICKSTART), and awards presented to some very deserving members!
The evening ended with great music and lots of dancing! See you next year!

Here are some of the things people said about the 2010 ITC!
Carly Presti
In Las Vegas I got to see my friend Margaux, who lives in Oregon. I got to see her do kata, sparring
and weapons. Margaux and I cheered each other on. I was excited to do weapons because it was my
very first time and I used the sword. My Dad (Mr. Presti) helped me create a sword kata.
I did sparring this year but it was harder than ever. When I was sparring against this one girl she hit
me in the chest kind of hard and my face shield hit me below the neck. Then my dad came over and I
told him what happened and I was crying because it hurt. Then Mr.Hammersly came over and said
that he would give me 1 minute to think about if I wanted to continue or not. He also said that maybe
I should take off my face shield. I thought about it and decided that I should continue on because I
thought I could spar better without the face shield.
I trained in Mr.Hammersly’s class and I learned how to use the Nunchakai. He made it a lot of fun
for everyone and I think it was my favorite class. I also did Mr.Hensley’s and Mr.Chandler’s seminars
which were also very good and taught me some sparring techniques.
John Reid
This was my first time and it was awesome! The seminars were amazing, the competition was excellent, and everyone there made me feel very comfortable and welcome. It was great to see those I had met
before and an honor to meet all the new people as well. Thank you all for such an awesome experience.
I can’t wait to come back next year and compete!
T.J. Williams
One of the things I liked at the ITC were the seminars because no matter what you do in the seminars,
you’re going to bring something back home that can help you become a better martial artist. For instance,
in John Will and David Meyer’s seminar there were a lot of techniques that I had never seen before and
I was getting hooked. Another thing was the demo competition; I have to tell you that training for this
competition is a mission! Honestly my biggest worry was doing a back flip on that foam mat because
I thought I was going to hurt myself. I think I just lost my confidence to do one, but I knew I had to it
for the sake of our team placing in the competition.
Finally shaking hands with Mr. Norris, not once, not twice, but three times! And it’s great to have
another picture taken with him. I can compare it to my other one. I don’t know if Mr. Norris knew I
slimmed down from before, maybe I can use this in his total gym infomercial - lol.
It was great to actually go back to the ITC once again to experience a weekend of fun, and surely
I’ll be back next year!
Shannon Myers
My favorite thing about this year’s ITC was the closeness I felt with our team and school. As Team
Fierce prepared for its second year of competing we really formed a family. In Vegas it was apparent we were all having fun together and when I left Las Vegas I missed my “family”. We’ve already gotten
together again and I can tell we’ll be a family for a long time.
Although we did not win first place our entire team and all our supporters were so proud. The support
from our school, friends, and family was obvious and greatly appreciated. I am glad to be a part of it.
Estelle Steiner
Mr. Will’s and Mr. Meyer’s seminars on Integrated Self Defense were incredible! As a college
professor, I really appreciated their method of instruction - show us the technique, walk us through it
step-by-step three times, then have us put it together as a fluid technique three times. It was a fantastic
teaching method that allowed us to cover lots of techniques in a short period of time, and more importantly, to remember them!

Chun Kuk Do Invades the MMA World
by Jim Chandler and Danny Semeraro Jr.
For the last three years some UFAF members have trained
in some of the MMA gyms in Las Vegas. It started with Danny
Semeraro and Jim Chandler going to the Xtreme Couture Gym
operated by UFC World Champion Randy Couture. Now, it has
expanded to two other MMA gyms and more CKD black belts.
This year CKD black belt John Malone, and guest Jose Mojica
joined us at Xtreme Couture, Tap Out Research & Development
Training Center, and Wanderlei Silva’s Fight Team Training
Center. We had the opportunity to train with some great
instructors at Xtreme Couture: Tim Lane, a former World
Combat League fighter who holds 16 title belts in various
organizations, 14 of those belts coming by way of a knock
out, and Chris Ben-Tchavtchavadze. Mr. Lane worked with
us on our Muay Thai skills, and with Mr. Tchavtchavadze we
worked on our boxing techniques.
At Tap Out we worked our grappling skills with Ultimate
Fighter Vinny Magalhaes, we trained our Muay Thai skills with
Shandon Eguchi, and we worked our strength and conditioning with several coaches.
At Wanderlei Silva’s place we honed our BJJ and MMA skills
with BJJ Black Belt and 8-1-1 MMA fighter Vitor Vianna. Mr.
Vianna showed us some great ways to reverse our position
from turtle to side mount, and then he destroyed us with an
MMA endurance work out. After that Michael Costa ran us
through some intense Muay Thai drills.
It was a great experience that gave us a chance to add
more skills to our repertoire. We highly encourage everyone
to complement their CKD skills by training at these great gyms
anytime they visit Las Vegas.

by Derrick Stinson
TB: When you were on the national circuit competing, what was the name
of your team?
Welcome to The Blitz (TB)! an element of Chun Kuk Do Magazine which will
explore the lives of the best fighters in our system! Do you have any questions
for this elite group? Email Derrick Stinson - [email protected]. In this issue,
The Blitz talks with Mr. Eric Jones.
Mr. Jones: I was on Team CKD and Team Kick Start Kids.
TB: What’s your favorite sparring technique?
TB: Can you please tell us a little about who you are?
Mr. Jones: My favorite technique to throw is photosynthesis (as your
opponent is kicking at you, duck under their kicking leg and then back
knuckle them in the head as you pass under their kick), but my bread and butter
is my blitz.
Mr. Jones: I am 21 years old and I live in Houston, Texas. I work at Home
Depot and just recently bought my first car. I aspire to be an engineer and
a Kick Start Kids instructor. I believe if you work hard, you can achieve everything
you want in life. I am a family man first and foremost. My mother just celebrated her one-year [wedding] anniversary and my sister just turned 18! They are
my passion and my pain (smile).
TB: Who are some of the people that you looked up to when you were coming
up in the fighting game?
Mr. Jones: Mr. Stinson, Mr. Kurek, Jason Tankson Bourelly, and my favorite is Raymond Daniels. His skills are awesome but I could do without the
clowning in the ring.
TB: What is the driving force behind your success?
Mr. Jones: The driving force that keeps me going is also the reason for my
success, God. Without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ I’m nothing and I
thank him for everything he has done for me. Secondly, the Kick Start Kids staff
and students keep encouraging me and driving me to be the best. If I don’t work
hard, they are there to give me a “kick in the teeth.”
TB: What has motivated you to keep sparring?
Mr. Jones: What motivates me is the excitement of it all. Not knowing
what will happen, snatching victory from defeat, losing just to go to the
dojo and work on what you did wrong, and the science of point sparring, and
the evolution of the sport. What motivates me are the people who went before
all of us in CKD: Mr. Wright, Mr. Kurek, Mr. Stinson, and of coarse Mr. Norris. I
must include Raymond Daniels and Jason Holmes in this even though they are
not CKD.
TB: Who is your instructor?
Mr. Jones: My instructor is 4th degree black belt Derrick Stinson.
TB: Was he a fighter?
TB: When you fight, what do you think about?
Mr. Jones: Mr. Stinson is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to martial arts.
He won fighting in the ITC twice and he won weapons twice. But the best
thing is his teaching. We fight pretty hard in our school and Mr. Stinson does
too. I feel like all of the students are good fighters at my school and it starts with
Mr. Stinson.
Mr. Jones: When I fight I try to keep my “smarts.” That basically means
having the ability to switch from attack to defense in a moment’s notice
and having great ring management. I try to read the person and figure out what
they are going to do and perform the counter to what they are trying to do.
TB: What are some of the names of your toughest opponents on the open
circuit?
TB: What do you think we as a style can improve on in the fight game? Coach
us if you will.
Mr. Jones: Some of my toughest opponents on the circuit in kata are
Joshua Derbin, Jonathan Tule, and Bear Loebe. In fighting they are Chris
Gallieo, Ryan George, Jose Lara, Bryan Young, and Jason Holmes.
Mr. Jones: What I think will help our style is the developing better ring
smarts in point sparring. That’s knowing the what, why, how, and when
in point sparring. I think going out on the NBL circuit with Team CKD will also
be a great way to find personal growth.
TB: Name some of your toughest opponents at the ITC?
TB: Thank you Mr. Jones for sharing with us.
Mr. Jones: At the ITC my toughest opponents are Carl Florez, Mike McKenzie, Steve Giroux, Van Frasher, Michael Holstein, the Alonzo brothers,
and Mr. Stinson.

My Life’s Kata
by Sadie Robinson
My orange belt testing: age 11
After I received my black belt I was
off to college at Nebraska Wesleyan
University. Because college was so
far away I decided to start taking
Chung Do Kwon Tae Kwon Do at
a great school in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Those instructors were like family to
me. While working on two majors
and three minors I started a martial
arts club that met twice a week, was a
member of the Step Team, Plainsmen
council, Delta Zeta where I served as
the public relations and philanthropy
chair, Wesleyan Theater Company,
and I also planned to run track in the
spring. In the meantime, a dance instructor in Franklin asked me to teach
karate in her Dance Studio on Sat-
It was 1997 when my brother
Tower and I started training in the
martial arts at American Champion Karate (ACK) in Nebraska,
owned by Mr. Kevin Benson, who
trained under Mr. David Parrish
(BB#585). Until I was old enough
to drive, my grandfather drove me
twice a week, every week, to and from
practices to a town 30 miles away,
and all over Nebraska to compete in
tournaments. After eight years of training, I received my 1st degree
black belt, and the bible verse that I wore on my 1st Dan was: Psalm
18:2 – “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God
is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my
salvation, my stronghold.”
“It may seem like a lot, but I have
always believed that it is not what you
have, it is what you give.”
I held my last karate class of the summer on August 14th, 2006 two
days before my son Tucker was born. We went back to NWU the following Monday for classes. Since day care centers do not take babies
until they are six weeks old, Tucker was watched by friends, family, and
was taken to quite a few Japanese classes. My advisor thought I was

urdays. A close family friend, whose
daughter was taking karate with me
at the time, suggested I name my
school Sadie’s Sidekicks, since as a
kid my favorite movie was Sidekicks.
However, after Christmas break my
plans started to change. During
track practices I started to notice I
was getting a little slower, and after
visiting the doctor I found out I was
going to be blessed with a baby. My

crazy when I told him I still wanted to graduate on time, May 2009,
with all two majors and three minors. It took a lot of summer classes,
and one 32-hour semester, but in the end I graduated with Highest
Distinction and many honors from NWU. During this time I also
received my 2nd degree black belt in ACK, and my 2nd Dan has the
following bible verse embroidered on it: Romans 13:12 – “The night
is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of
darkness and put on the armor of light.” I have always felt that a black
belt is a constant reminder of who we are and how we cannot take for
granted that a black belt represents many things, among them: integrity,
perseverance, leadership, and an armor of light.
defeated. After the mayoral election, I was nominated and elected
President of the Franklin County Historical Society Inc. The museum
is a great asset to our community and it is important that people step
up to assure its place in the future.
Along with my presidential duties, I currently teach Special Education Reading, coach high school softball, do private tutoring in reading
and other educational areas, teach vacation bible school to preschoolers,
am taking classes in pursuit of my Special Education Masters Degree,
and instruct in the areas of CKD, Bo Staff, and Padded Sword. Our
Sadie’s Sidekicks’ annual tournament benefits the Sadie’s Sidekicks
Scholarship, Franklin County Museum, and the Nebraska Wesleyan
University Pregnancy and Childcare Advocacy Team. It may seem
like a lot, but I have always believed that it is not what you have, it is
what you give. I am able to give and provide for my son, my students,
my school, and my community, and that makes me happy.
This year I attended my first ITC. What an experience! I met so
many great people, and was able to assist with the tournament setup,
timekeeping, score keeping, and judging. I also got the privilege of
sparring with Mr. Chip Wright. I received a hook kick to the eye, and
after coming up from a sweep, all I could say was, “That was awesome!”
The story got back to Mr. Norris who nonchalantly replied “That’s
usually what people say after they wake up!”
I brought many things to ITC, but my copy of Black Belt Patriotism
was brought with a mission. I am passing the book around to UFAF
black belt members who have read the book, and asking them to inscribe their definition of the “American Dream” in my book. I now
plan to send the book to CKD schools so that many more black belts
can inscribe their definitions.
Piicture of my son Tucker and me (currently a white belt with a stripe)
This past year is when I decided to really look into Chun Kuk Do
and the United Fighting Arts Federation. I was always told that I
was trained in the “Chuck Norris System” which was later changed
to Chun Kuk Do, but my instructor was not actually a part of UFAF.
So what would I need to do to become a member of UFAF? How do
I get my CKD black belt? I knew this was something I needed to do
for myself, but more importantly for my students. After corresponding
with my now instructor, Mr. Steve Nelson, I realized that the system
had evolved, and I had been taught in a different way. I am so blessed
to have Mr. Nelson as an instructor. The amazing thing is that every
time he says something, he’s able to turn on a light bulb in my head or
make one I already had much brighter. But, I am sure he has gotten
sick of some my questions and comments! “What do you mean we
don’t do the Nihachi forms anymore?” “There really isn’t a jump in
Bassai?” “Where did Pyong An Cho Dan and Yi Dan come from?”
“Well, you’re moving like Beyoncé, so that’s got to be a full hip action!”
“Really? A second half to UFAF 1? No way!” “Thank goodness
for Chung Do Kwon Tae Kwon Do or I would have had to ask what a
thrust kick was.” “How do you pronounce that again?” “With whom
can I talk to about those Nihachi forms?” The Nihachi questions may
sound silly, but they are definitely some of my favorite kata!
Tucker demonstrating self defense: keeping top position
Meeting the Norris’s was absolutely inspiring. Just being in the
same organization is such a privilege and humbling experience. I am
proud to be a part of the CKD and UFAF family; thank you for the
warm welcome!
Mr. Nelson recommended a few books that Mr. Norris had written
and after reading Black Belt Patriotism and speaking to friends and
family, I was inspired and compelled to run for mayor of my hometown.
If I would have made it on to the general election and became mayor
I would have been the youngest and first female mayor in Franklin’s
history. A measly eleven votes left me disappointed but definitely not

KIAI CORNER
Welcome to Kiai Corner! This is the last part
of the book Eye of the Hurricane: Tales of the
Empty Handed Masters, in which the author,
Dr. Terrence Webster-Doyle, address the riddle.
The Riddle:
What is it that…
You cannot see if you look,
You cannot hear if you listen,
You cannot take hold of if you grasp,
Is silent when you speak,
Speaks when you are silent,
And you can only have when you don’t want it?
The Riddle’s Answer
The students had come together after another
stormy night. Tree branches had fallen, broken
off in a fierce wind. A few clouds still drifted in
the morning sky. The ground was soaked by the
downpour. The air was clean and fresh, the sun
breaking through to warm the earth.
Last night, just before the storm came, they
practiced their forms in the main hall. Ceremoniously they had let dozens of candles to illuminate
their practice area. In the flickering of those
yellow lights, they moved with grace and ease,
playing with their shadows on the wall.
The room today was clean and dry. The smell
of burnt wood, sweat, and candle wax filled the
air with a strange pungent sweet odor. The
students rose and bowed as the chief instructors
entered. Then they all sat quietly for a while,
letting their minds relax.
Then one of the teachers spoke: “Why is
there so much sorrow in the world? Why do
people fight and kill each other? How can you,
as a Martial Artist, live peacefully through your
Art? Have you ever seriously thought about these
questions? Or are you caught up in fanciful images of attack and defense?” The students were
quiet and listened intently.
“When you leave here and go back to your
regular lives, what will you take home from here?
What difference will all of this training mean to
your lives? Have you understood what we are
teaching?”
A bird sang outside the window. The cats on
the window ledge stretched, yawned, then went
back to sleep.
“Oh students, the world is a maze and you
48
CKD MAGAZINE FALL 2010
have to find your way through it without getting
lost. It is so easy to get lost. There are so many
false signposts, so many dead ends that you can
caught up in – even for a lifetime. This is no
childhood game. You are growing up and need
to become strong and capable. It is our job as
teachers to help you understand yourself and the
world, to give you skills – not just to read and
write, but to live in a relationship peacefully. This
is the real meaning of your education here. We
hope that you have some sense of this. I know
that your stay here has sometimes been hard. You
probably haven’t completely understood what we
are trying to demonstrate. But no matter, don’t
worry. Just listen and someday it will all make
sense. Just keep your minds open, like a newly
plowed field. If your field is fertile, the seeds
will grow.”
The students were so very still. They knew
that what was being said was of great importance
to their lives, and that the teachers cared deeply
for them. The students had come to this place

with all kinds of romantic ideas about the Martial
Arts, with spectacular desires to be great warrior,
like the ninjas or filled with a new wisdom. But
they had grown up a lot here and were filled with
a new wisdom. They knew the true and right
meaning of Kara-te, the Art of the Martial Arts.
“Oh, students, be beginners!” the teacher
called out. “What meaning does the past have
for you? Can you remember a time of anger, of
sorrow, of fear? Why? Live now, students! Let
the old run through you like a river. Just listen,
observe, then let it go. Memories are with you
but they should not interfere with your living in
the present. All those images you have are just
that: images. They cannot harm you. They
have no place in living. Living is always new,
fresh. Your memories are old, stale, dead. To
understand this is true meditation. Meditation
is not repeating something over and over. That
only dulls the mind, puts it to sleep. Meditation
means to be aware, to look at, to see. And you
can do it anytime, wherever you are. Just stop –

you are silent, and you can only have when you
don’t want it? Answer, and you will not know;
don’t answer and you will be a fool!”
The students felt warm inside, as they did
when they first put their shoes in order by the
training hall door – just so. They felt healthy
and happy, and most of all, cared for. Realizing that their special training time together
for this session was coming to a close, they
also felt sad.
With these words, the teachers looked at
each one of the students.
“It’s all right to cry when one feels sad. This
is as natural as cherry blossoms falling from a
tree in spring,” their teacher said with tears in
her eyes. Both of the teachers cried in silence
with their students. The sun came out fully
from behind the clouds and warm rays flooded
the training hall.
“Can you now tell me the meaning of Empty
Self?”
The two elected senior students stood,
walked up to the teachers, and held out their
hands to them. In the students’ hands were
dandelion flowers: lovely, common, beautifully
brilliant yellow weeds.
The teachers accepted the flowers, stood up,
bowed, and left the training hall. The formal
class was over, but the training would remain
with the students throughout their lives.
