Kentucky Florists’ Association’s
55th Annual Convention
Members of the Kentucky Florists’ Association (KFA) have been
gathering since 1957 to share ideas, learn new design tips and create
and build friendships. KFA is represented by members from retail
florists, employees, freelance designers, wholesalers and suppliers of
floral products, growers, students and others who serve the floral
industry. This year’s convention is a celebration of the heritage and
beauty of Kentucky. It is filled with educational opportunities and
hands-on workshops. For the past five decades, volunteers have created the annual convention to inspire floral designers at every level.

The Capital Plaza Hotel, Frankfort, Kentucky
Centrally located in Frankfort on 405 Wilkerson Boulevard,

Educational Sessions
This year’s convention features back-to-back educational
sessions by national and world-renowned leaders in the florist
industry.
Guest Designers
Jim Johnson AAF, AIFD, TMF is the recently retired and distinguished lecturer from the Department
of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M University.
He was also the Director of the Benz School of Floral Design and the Benz Gallery of Floral Art. He
is co-author of the nationally acclaimed Professional
Certified Florist program, and Flowers: Creative Design, a definitive
book on floral design in the United States. He is a native of Indiana
and teaches annually at the Floral Education Program of Kentucky
(FEPK) and his presentations are sponsored by FEPK.
Tom Bowling AIFD, PFCI of Fairfield, Ohio has
more than twenty-seven years in the floral industry.
He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in art and interior
design from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master’s of Education degree from Miami University of
Ohio. His presentations are sponsored by Fitz Design.
Kristine Kratt AIFD, CFD began her floral career in
her teens as a manager of a retail flower shop in the
San Francisco Bay Area while attending the College of
San Mateo’s floriculture program. Currently residing in
Philadelphia, PA and working as a freelance designer,
Kristine is constantly furthering her personal design
knowledge by traveling throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia to
participate in design projects and classes. Kristine’s presentation is
sponsored by FTD.
Jo Buttrum AAF, AMF, PCF and Shelby
Shy are a mother and daughter team who
own Shirley’s Flowers & Gifts in Rogers,
Arkansas. They have been voted the Best
of the Best Florist in Northwest Arkansas.
Their presentation on weddings is held on
Saturday and is sponsored by BloomNet.

Paul Latham is the owner and creative director
of Fleur de Lis Events & Design of Louisville. He
has been in the floral industry for five years, four
as owner of Fleur de Lis Events. He is last year’s
runner up in the Kentucky Designer of the Year
contest. His presentation will be held on Sunday and
is sponsored by KFA.
Bill A. Taylor AIFD has taught floral design at
numerous colleges and universities in the United
States and Canada for over twenty years. He
also taught classes in Korea, China, Hong Kong,
Taiwan, Thailand, Japan and Malaysia. He has
created designs that have appeared in national
shelter magazines and floral trade publications,
including Flowers&, PFD, Florist Review and BloomNet. Bill
plans to debut a brand new presentation on Saturday morning. It is
sponsored by BloomNet.
Gerard Toh AIFD is a consultant for Sherman Oaks
Florist, in California and previously owned and operated the flower shop for 25 years. Gerry’s work has
been featured in numerous floral publications, including several covers, features and editorials in Flowers&
magazine, Flora, Blooming News, Town and Country
and Bride and Bloom magazine. A winner of numerous awards for
design, including the California State Designer of the Year. His presentation, The Belle of Kentucky, will be on Sunday and is sponsored
by Teleflora.
Hands-On Workshops
A popular feature of convention are the hands-on
workshops. This year guest designers will teach an array of
classes. Attendees will be able to take home their designs and
can wear their Derby hat to the gala on Saturday.
Gala has Kentucky Derby Theme
Ed Rogers, KMF will be the designer
for the President’s Dinner Gala which
will have a Kentucky Derby Theme.
This year’s Gala features live music by
The Unlimited Band.

The Kentucky Designer of the Year is sponsored by Teleflora
and KFA. Bring a finished design to the convention for each of the
categories listed below.
• Funeral – “A tribute for someone who loves hiking in the Eastern Kentucky mountains,”
• Wedding – “For a Modern Kentucky Bride,”
• Do your own thing – “Lilies for a Filly.”
Novice Designer of the Year is for designers who have never entered a contest with KFA. Create a finished design using this
theme, “A Centerpiece for a Kentucky Derby Party.”
Kentucky Cup is for the past Kentucky Designers of the Year.
This year’s theme is, “The Sun Shines Bright on My Old Kentucky
Home.”
Hats for Hope Kentucky Derby Hat Design Contest. Design
a hat for an elegant lady to wear to the Kentucky Derby. The hats are
donated to the American Cancer Society’s Hats for Hope. No fresh
flowers or plants can be used.
