eSpirit Message
to give or not to give
that is the question
I look forward to reading two magazines that come across my desk. Both are publications put out by
the United Church of Canada. One is the Observer filled with articles and news about United Church of
Canada congregations. The other is Mandate, a magazine filled with stories from around the world.
Stories tell about missions supported by the United Church—one local and one global magazine.
When I opened Mandate this week, on the inside cover was a
series of “ifs.” A couple caught my attention.
If I give none of my treasure, time, or talent
I cast a vote in favour of closing my local church
and its ministry in the community.
If I give less than I spend on routine luxuries,
I neglect the opportunity to discover the riches of generosity
as a spiritual practice.
On Sunday, we will hear Kerry Cramer speak about her
experience in the Me to We program. She had an amazing
experience in Udaipur, India this spring. How others live in
another part of the world opened her eyes. What others need
in countries far away opened her heart.
Local or global giving offers each of us an opportunity for
spiritual enrichment. Let’s change the world, one person at a
time. Shalom, Abigail
