My name is Kim Parkerson. I live in Centreville with my husband Keith and our three children. Our daughter Danielle is 22,
our son Brady is 21 and our son Jared is 19. I was born in Dover, DE. and raised in Smyrna, DE. I was a member of Asbury
United Methodist Church in Smyrna. My parents are from the
Queenstown area and graduated from Centreville High School.
My father really wanted to be back here so we moved from
Smyrna in 1982. I graduated high school in 1984 and attended
Delmarva Beauty Academy in 1987.

Keith and I met in 1986 and we were married in 1992. We made our home in
Queenstown and later moved to Centreville in 2001. We attended Kent Island
United Methodist Church until we moved to Centreville and we began our journey
with CUMC. We have been very blessed here and have made some life-long
friends. I have volunteered in the Sunday School classroom, the Youth Group,
the nursery and as a greeter/usher. I have attended the early service for 10
years. My son Brady has been a drummer in the Youth Praise Band and is still in
the CUMC band Backburner.
Along with being a licensed hair stylist I have been a daycare provider for over 20
years babysitting all of my nieces and nephews as well as a few of my friends’
children. I have worked part-time at Cottage Cuts Salon in Centreville for 20
years. Recently I have taken a part-time position at Compass Regional Hospice
as the Volunteer Assistant. I have been a volunteer at CRH for a couple of years
at Camp New Dawn, a grief camp for young kids and teenagers. Through camp I
met some amazing people who work for Hospice and I felt this was my next
chapter as daycare was coming to an end. I started working at CRH in February
of this year and I absolutely love it!
I am very excited to be the Sunday School Superintendent and begin my work
with the little ones of this church. In a world of declining Christianity I believe we
need to nurture the children through their faith journey. Together with the Sunday
School teachers I am hoping we can continue to do great things here at CUMC
as we teach the kids about Jesus Christ. Here is a quote I recently read, " If we
don't teach our children to follow Christ, the world will teach him not to". Proverbs
22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not
depart from it.”
I am ready to begin this journey and I am hopeful that it will be a smooth transition. I have already felt the love and support from my CUMC family. I am blessed
and thankful every day for this opportunity to serve the Lord.

All Things Prayer!
Following the Call of God
Let us be clear. Prayer is no kindergarten exercise for the faint of heart. Prayer is
an encounter with the power of God, and with God Himself; this God we serve is
no tame or doting celestial grandfather who projects benevolence on all who
deign to speak with Him. Rather this is an almighty Sovereign who has an agenda to save the world. He is magnificent love and severe holiness at the same time. His agenda
is to overthrow evil at the very deepest root. To get us to the place in which this can be done,
He will lead us into our calling. Our calling to proclaim Christ and to resist evil in all its forms
may make us sweat profusely and find no comfort except in knowing that we are being and doing exactly as God commands.
The book of Hebrews tells us that this kind of praying was not only related to Jesus’ prayer in
Gethsemane, but was the manner that Jesus prayed all His earthly life. The writer is very bold.
He indicates that Jesus’ life was in fact His training ground for His ultimate sacrifice; Jesus was
in training to be a priest for His Father. He was born the Son of God. He trained to be God’s
High Priest. This is what the writer of Hebrews was saying when he said that Jesus had some
things to learn: “In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud
crying and tears to the one able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation
being designated by God as a high priest” (Hebrews 5:7-10, NASB).
In Gethsemane Jesus was training His disciples in how to pray. This time they didn’t pass the
test. Jesus did. To learn to endure requires time with God. Without this time with God, our resources will reach an end, and the enemy will succeed in distracting us from God’s direction.
High Priest of Heaven, teach me how to pray! Show me how to withstand the temptations and
distractions of the enemy so that I might endure, persevere and have victory over him in every
area of my life. I want to proclaim You by living the prayer-filled life You demonstrated on earth.
Thank You, Lord, that You have given me the power of the Holy Spirit to guide me as I step into
the calling You have placed before me.

Prayer Points
Praise God that he is kind and good. Give thanks for specific ways you have experienced that
since the beginning of this week. Confess times when you have not been a clear and consistent
image-bearer of these characteristics of your God. Commit to reflecting him with such quality
that others will praise God for his kindness and goodness shown to them through you. Ask God
to produce this part of his Holy Spirit’s fruit in you.
Pray that God’s people will honor him by being kind to the needy (Prov. 14:31). Ask God to use
those efforts to spread his kingly influence..

Prayer Workshop
There are no Prayer Workshops scheduled for July or August. Our next Workshop will be Saturday,
September 3 beginning 9:30 - 11:30 am in the Double Sunday School Room. Even though we’re
not officially meeting these months, we will be prayer-walking and driving through our neighborhoods and communities. For more information, please see upcoming announcement sheets and/or
speak to one of our Monday evening prayer group members.
HOWEVER, we will be offering opportunities for everyone to participate in our newly added 24 Hour
Prayer Vigils, in your home or vacation "Prayer War Room", the SECOND Friday of each month,
beginning at 6 am and ending Saturday at 6 am. Each month will have a different Prayer Focus.
This month's Focus is to pray for Families. A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex. For more info, please
talk to Bonnie, Barbara or any member of our Prayer Team.

Thank you so much for the wonderful going away reception on May 29 th. We appreciate all
the love, good wishes, and support we received. Our many years at CUMC have been full of
spiritual growth and opportunities to serve. We were fortunate to work with many of you in
various capacities, in both leadership and support roles. We were blessed to have Pastor
Mark, and later, Pastor Robyn, as spiritual leaders open to new ministries, and genuinely
teaching from God’s Word. We ask for your continuing prayers as we seek a new church as

Methodist Men Complete Camp Pecometh Bath House Upgrade:
Two years ago, the Methodist men took on an additional project at Camp Pecometh other
than our cabin. The bath house next to our cabin needed an update and a freshening up.
Last year they replaced 2 showers, some rotted wood, and assisted the camp with some of
the plumbing costs. This year they pressure washed the entire inside areas of the bath
house, painted all interior walls, floors, and trim. They replaced some leaking faucets, drain
traps and added new lattice to the fronts of the sink areas. They replaced the exterior lights
and put new daylight energy efficient interior light bulbs in the shower, toilet, and sink areas
making those areas brighter and safer. The entire exterior was also painted. The amount of
time the men worked was 87 ½ hours over the months of March, April, and May. A special
thank you to Rudy and some of his youth group for scraping some of the outside walls to
make ready for paint.

Don’t miss out! The day is approaching quickly but there’s still time! On Wednesday,
July 13th at 7:00 p.m. CUMC will be hosting a one-time book club. We will gather together
as a church and discuss the book “Same Kind of Different As Me.” Several people have already read it, and I have received wonderful feedback about what a quick read it is and how
much they were moved by this true story.
Join us for desserts and coffee, and most importantly help us brainstorm. We will consider your ideas about how we can collectively make a difference in our community in the
name of Christ, and we will begin to put together a plan of action. Guess how many people
are participating in this study? …

Are you a newer member at CUMC and you are looking for a great
way to connect with other people in the church and get involved?
Perhaps you are a long-time member and you simply want to try
something other than traditional Bible studies? Or maybe you have
been part of a small group in the past and want to connect with
some new people? If any of these sound like you, then consider
being a part of one of our small groups!
The groups are a wonderful way to grow spiritually and also connect
socially within the church. Groups meet regularly in homes in a variety of formats – sometimes one home will be the host each time,
other times you will rotate homes. Some groups meet weekly, and others less frequently. It all
depends on what works for you and your schedule! It can be for couples, singles, and any
age. A typical evening includes a time of food, fellowship, Bible study, and prayer.
Remember, being part of a “church” is about much more than an hour or so each Sunday!

Summer is quickly approaching, so please be aware of some important information regarding our summer schedule:
OFFICE HOURS: Beginning the week of May 30th the church office hours will be Monday
through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (closed for lunch each day between 12:00 and 12:30
p.m.) During the summer the office will be closed on Fridays. This will be in effect through the
week of September 5th.
TRADITIONAL SERVICE: Due to the 8:40 contemporary service being moved into
the sanctuary, the traditional service will continue to meet at 11:00 a.m. throughout the summer and will not change to an earlier time.
CHURCH PICNIC: Will take place on Sunday, August 21st. There will be only one morning service that day at 11:00 a.m. The picnic will be held at the church this year immediately
following the morning service. The evening service will take place at its regularly scheduled
time.
STAFF VACATIONS: Please contact the church office for any information related to
staff vacations during the summer months.

Bear Ministry News
Dear CUMC,
I was present at GIGI (Murdoch) Leadbeater’s memorial service. I took the sweet little bear at
the end of the pew. The bear has found a new home. I am enclosing a bio about a young
man who had to face the challenges of being diagnosed with cancer. The sweet bear is in his
possession now. Thank you for this lovely tradition of caring for those who need physical,
emotional, and spiritual care. Please keep Jacob and his family your prayers.

Jacob’s bio:
Meet Jacob Crooks!
Jacob, in his late twenties, is a snowboarder, athlete, and adventurer. He’s also a
newlywed, after marrying the love of his life Brianna last July. In August, Jacob
broke his left arm and has experienced excruciating pain since. In October, he was
diagnosed with osteosarcoma after a tumor was located in his left upper humerus.
The arm that broke had been weakened by the sarcoma and never healed as a result of the cancer.
After many tests and opinions, it was determined that to beat this aggressive form of
cancer, two 10-week rounds of chemotherapy and amputation of the limb would be
necessary. A few weeks ago on March 11, Jacob’s left arm was amputated at the
shoulder. While the surgery was a success, Jacob still has a few weeks of chemotherapy ahead before he and his family will learn whether he is cancer free.
Jacob has been unable to work throughout his fight with cancer and the medical
bells for his lifesaving treatment are accumulating. Thank you for keeping Jacob
and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
