Sanilac Senior Fair to Help Seniors Was A Resounding Success
On June 26th, Sanilac County Building Ties and the Sanilac County Council on Aging collaborated to bring
Sanilac County seniors and caregivers together to celebrate the 28 th Annual Sanilac County Senior Fair.
Sanilac Building Ties is a community non-profit agency established in 1987 to improve the availability and
utilization of health services for the elderly through cooperative interagency action in local communities. Today,
approximately 32 area healthcare, home care, hospice and medical supply agencies work together to enhance the
shared responsibilities and coordination of senior services and events.
Deckerville Community Hospital, along with informational booths and free senior health services saw 751
area seniors enjoy Tai Chi Exercises with Sandra Martin, RN and a Craft Workshop with the Human Development
Commission. The informative Presentations included Advanced Directives, Planning Ahead; Senior Scams, Protect
Yourself; and It’s the Law, Your Right to Choose were very well attended and received.
Sanilac Building Ties would like to take this opportunity to thank
County Drain Commissioner, Greg Alexander, for acting as the Master of
Ceremonies for the Sanilac Senior Fair. Other services graciously
provided include Wheelchairs offered by United Health Services; Cat Rides
provided by Volz Golf Carts of Marlette; Parking offered by the Sanilac
County Sheriff’s Posse; Water provided by Culligan Water Conditioning of
Marlette; and Music and Entertainment provided by DJ John Mendoza.
“The Sanilac Senior Fair remains an amazingly successful event.
This year we very pleased to see the interest our area seniors had in
Planning Ahead and Being Ahead of the Game! It is always rewarding to
work with our area seniors!” said Building Ties Chairperson,
Kathy Sauvola.
Area Nurses Verified Trauma Ready
When you experience trauma, minutes count and skilled intervention is imperative. On June 19 and 20, 2015
Deckerville Community Hospital sponsored the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Trauma Nursing Core Course
(TNCC) for area nurses. Nurses from McKenzie Health System and Deckerville Hospital participated. The course,
held at McGregor United Methodist Church, was taught by expert instructor,
Christopher Mullen RN, MSN, flight nurse with Beaumont One.
TNCC (Provider) widely recognized as the premier course for
hospitals and trauma centers worldwide, is a two day course designed to
provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills. The
course includes rapid identification of life-threatening injuries, comprehensive
patient assessment, and enhanced intervention for better patient outcomes.
RNs successfully completing the course are: Kay Cutcher, Faith
Jurges, Christine Slivka, Kathy Aumann, Crystal O’Neal, Maria Szydlo,
Angela McConnachie, Carol Zuehlke, Coren Crane, Andrea Benjey, Ashley
Stolicker, and Irene Cole. These nurses, most of whom have previous
verification, received the ENA TNCC 4 year provider verification card.
TNCC Instructor Chris Mullen,
EMT, RaChelle Rich, audited the course.
and nurse Maria Szydlo
Dr. Afaneh Selected as the June Employee of the Month.
His nominators have this to say; “Dr. Afaneh gets the job done-efficiently. He is
well-skilled at what he does and continuously studies to maintain and increase his knowledge
and professional certifications. He genuinely cares about his patients and is 100% dependable
to be here on the job. He is very giving to his co-workers and to the hospital with financial
support.”
Once again, Congratulations to Dr. Afaneh on receiving this award!
Another FREE Fun Filled Day in Sanilac County for Families
Saturday June 27th, Deckerville Community Hospital, alongside other area community organizations participated
in the Sandusky Thumb Festival Kids Day. Undaunted by the gray skies during the Kids Day event over 200
children and their parents enjoyed the many carnival games provided by Countryside Free Methodist Church of
Sandusky, learned about neighborhood safety while riding kid size tractors provided by the Sanilac Sheriff's
Department, jumped and giggled in the 4 giant inflatables, and were infatuated by the games and giveaways
offered by the area human service agencies. Parents and care providers were given information about services and
programs available to them and their wee ones. Many Sandusky High School
National Honor Society students volunteered all day to help kids navigate the
inflatables. Everyone was entertained by Oehrlein's Dancers, Lesley Durik
demonstrated mad hula skills and shared her hulas with the crowd and Misty
Waun Roberts got kids dancing to her Zumba steps. The Sandusky Fire
Department provided kids hands on experience with the fire truck hoses.
McDonalds provided cases of healthy apples slices free to everyone, Justin Faber
loaned his snow cone machine and the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce handed
out refreshments all day long. The Sanilac Great Start Collaborative wishes to
thank all those who helped assure that the families had fun, received valuable
information and walked away feeling good about all the physical activity they
were able to enjoy with their children. Through collaboration and connected partnerships good things can and do happen.
