I am sure by now you have seen the most
recent coordinated marketing campaign by
the national Boy Scout organization. It is
simply . . . . "Prepared. For Life." It is a
catchy little tag line with a carefully
placed period.
It has great a visual component as well. It
clearly communicates what the Boy
Scouts are best known for . . . . camping!
The silhouette images show Scouts hiking,
mountain biking and one is even on a zip line.
Why not use "Be Prepared. For Life." for the campaign? After
all, “Be Prepared” is the motto of the Boy Scouts. Millions of
young boys have recited that motto for over 100 years. Let's go
back to that carefully placed period. I would offer up to you that
this is a statement to the rest of the world ~ Scouts are prepared
for life. We as an organization are accomplishing what we set out
to do!
I can’t say thank you enough for what you do to prepare young
men and women for life. The impact you leave on them will
resonate through many generations to come. While the Scouts
may not thank you now, they will, and so will their parents, their
spouses and their children. Thanks for leaving a legacy for
America.
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Council
President this past year. I hope you feel as if the council officers
and I have left the campsite better than we found it. My heartfelt
thanks go out to each of them. Many hands make for lighter
work for all involved and they have done just that.
I wish our next Council President, Joe Russell and the team he
puts together the very best.

Council Calendar
Commissioners are supporters of Scouting
units. They provide encouragement, advice,
program help, re-charter assistance, and are
generally a friendly helping hand to make
your unit the best possible experience for the
youth it serves.
The annual Middle Tennessee Council
Commissioner’s College was held Saturday,
November 5. This day-long training and
fellowship event drew more than 100
Commissioners, and featured National Commissioner Tico Perez
and Assistant Chief Scout Executive Wayne Brock. Our 2012
Commissioner College will take place on Saturday, November 3,
2012. Mark your calendar now!
Congratulations to the following individuals who recently
received their Doctorate in Commissioner Science Knots: Dennis
McNamee, Craig Munsee, Ray Capp, Justin Myrick, and Patricia
Cashion. Distinguished Commissioner Award Recipients
included Tim Black, Dan Rule, and Hugh Jackson.
One of the topics covered at this year’s college was Journey to
Excellence (JTE). We’ve now successfully completed our first
year of the Journey to Excellence program. A primary quality
measure is service to units. Each District Commissioner and their
staff is responsible for reporting visits to units in the Unit Visit
Tracking System (UVTS). Last year our commissioners logged
almost 2,000 unit visits. This is an area where we’ve made much
progress and lead the Councils in our service area, yet there is
much room for improvement. I encourage all Administrative and
Unit Commissioners to visit units and report the results in UVTS.
Let’s make 2012 a Gold Standard year for commissioner service
in Middle Tennessee!
It has been my pleasure to serve as your Council Commissioner.
It was an especially high honor to serve during our Centennial
year in 2010. Tim Acree has been nominated to become Council
Commissioner beginning in 2012. Tim is an excellent choice to
lead our Council’s commissioners. A long-time commissioner in
the Dan Beard Council, Tim moved to Middle Tennessee several
years ago. Under his leadership the College of Commissioner
Science has been very successful. In addition to his service as
college director, Tim is National Commissioner Service Training
Chair, and Dean of Commissioner Programs at Philmont Training
Center.
New Commissioners are always welcome. If you have an interest

The 2012 Eagle / Volunteer Reception is set for Sunday, April 29th at the Opryland Hotel from
1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. This event will recognize the 2011 Eagle Scout Class and the Silver Beaver
recipients.
Family and friends will be invited to join in this celebration. The approximate cost of the event
will be $26-$28 per person. A special guest speaker will be announced at a later date. Past
speakers include Senator Bill Frist; Congressman Jim Cooper; Water Overton, General Manager
of LP Field; Kevin Carter, formerly with the Miami Dolphins; astronaut Dr. Drew Gaffney; Hoot
Gibson, Coach Ed Temple and Rear Admiral Vinson Smith.
As an Eagle Scout in 2011, you are invited as a special guest to this event. We will locate a
mentor in the career field you are interested in to sponsor you. To help us prepare this special
event, we need to know if you plan to attend. Please call Jennifer Glasner at (615) 383-9724 or
email [email protected] as soon as possible with your response, as well as your career
interest. We also need a photo to be used during the presentation.
On
, the Middle Tennessee Council will hold the Scouting for
Food service project in collaboration with the American Heritage Girls and Second Harvest. Scouts
and leaders from across the council will be asked to collect food for Second Harvest and its
affiliates, located locally throughout the council.
This year, units will be responsible for distributing bags/flyers one week in advance of the collection date. On February 11,
2012, Scouts and Scout leaders within the unit will collect and transport food donations to their local drop-off location.
Scouting for Food District Chairpersons will work with local units to determine their territory for bag/flyer distribution and
collection.

to request collection materials.
More information and assignments will be given out at District Roundtables in January 2012. Below is the list of the

The Cooke Eagle Scout Academic Scholarship
and Hall/McElwain Merit Scholarship are for
graduating Seniors only. Applications for these

The Walter R. Courtenay Award is open to all
Eagle Scouts from the 2011 year.
Board of Review dates are January 1, 2011 until
December 31, 2011. The application is

Lipscomb University has announced the launch of a new Scout
Award beginning in 2012 to honor Scouts who have achieved the
top rank of Eagle Scout, Venturing Silver and Sea Scouting
Quartermaster Awards. The Scout Award is a $10,000 award for any
incoming freshman who is accepted to Lipscomb University and has
attained one of these honors. The funds are distributed in $2,500
increments each year for up to four years, and are applied to room
and board charges.
“Lipscomb University is proud of what these students have
accomplished as Scouts and we are proud to be able to recognize
them for it. We believe that students who have succeeded as Scouts
have demonstrated a strong ability to lead, a genuine commitment to
their communities, and a level of personal integrity that sets the
standard for their peers. These qualities are the same that we look
for in our students,” said Lipscomb President L. Randolph Lowry.

The second annual Klondike
Derby is just around the corner on February
17-19th at Latimer High Adventure Base. Venturers
and Sea Scouts will put their Scouting skills to work in the field, to
demonstrate teamwork and Scout spirit, and to have outdoor fun in the winter.
The two day Derby is made up of 18 towns with a competition to complete at each.
Some of these include a sled race, hatchet throw, shooting sports, cooking contest

Joe Russell, 2012 Middle Tennessee Council President, is co-founder/co-CEO of Elan-Polo, Inc., a
large wholesaler of footwear in the worldwide discount, mid-tier and better grade sectors. Under his
guidance, the company was awarded Footwear Supplier of the Year for 2010 for Walmart
Corporation. Mr. Russell, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, is also a director and co-founder
of Community Care Inc., an Outpatient Surgical Clinic Company as well as co-founder of Joseph V.
Russell & Associates, a Real Estate and Development Company. He is presently a member of the
Society of International Business Fellows (SIBF), the Business Leadership Council of Nashville,
Board of Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts, Red Cross Board, and Vanderbilt Heart
Advisory Council. In addition, he is a director of Correction Corporation of America (CCA), a New
York Stock Exchange Company. He serves as Chairman of its Compensation Committee, as well as
serving on the Governance and Executive Committees.

friends and family. This fall, there
was a recruitment initiative in which
the Scouts were challenged to bring
in a new member. Each Scout
received a recruiter patch and was
entered into a drawing for prizes.
Mr. Russell was honored as 2000 Entrepreneur of the Year (Master Category) for the Southeast by
Ernst & Young. He has served in numerous leadership roles in civic and charitable organizations in
Nashville. Along with his wife Anne, Joe was awarded the Excellence in Leadership Award by United
Way of America and The Nashville 100 Business Leadership Award for contributions in the Middle
Tennessee community. Joe is an active member of Forest Hills Baptist Church, Belle Meade Country
Club and active in the United Way. Joe enjoys scuba diving, snow skiing, hiking, hunting, fishing and
golf. He is married to Anne Lowry Russell. They have 3 daughters, 5 granddaughters and 2
grandsons. In addition, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, especially on his farm.
We are pleased to have Mr. Russell serve as the 2012 Council President for the Middle Tennessee
Council.
Over 200 Scouts helped turn LP Stadium Pink on October 22nd for the Tennessee
Titans game showcasing Breast Cancer Awareness. Scouts, families and volunteers
spent the day putting pink posters on 65,000 seats for the game the following
Sunday.
This service project was a huge undertaking, but well worth the effort to heighten
awareness of this terrible disease.

Tim Acree has been appointed as the 2012 Middle
Tennessee Council Commissioner. Tim is currently an
Assistant Council Commissioner; he also serves as Dean of
the College of Commissioner Science and is Chairman of
Middle Tennessee Council’s NESA Committee.
In addition, Tim is the Training Chairman on the National
Commissioner Support Staff. As Training Chairman, he is
responsible for all Commissioner Training and serves as a
member of the National Volunteer Training Committee.
Prior to his role as Training Chairman, he was the
Resource Chairman for the National Commissioner
Support Staff.
Tim has a strong passion for training, and was instrumental
in the redesign and execution of the new Commissioner
training courses at the Philmont Training Center. He was
also responsible for the launch of the first College of
Commissioner Science held at Philmont.
Prior to joining Middle Tennessee Council, Tim was a
District Commissioner, a District Chairman, and the
District Advancement Chairman in the Dan Beard Council
in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was awarded the Silver Beaver
while at the Dan Beard Council.
As a youth, Tim was quite active in Scouting and earned
his Eagle Scout Award in the Allegheny Trails Council. He
is a NESA lifetime member. Professionally, Tim has been
with Hewlett-Packard Co for 26 years where he is
currently a Lead Deployment Engineer – Cloud Solutions.
It has been a great year for Latimer! With groups from Chicago, Orlando, Knoxville, Nashville and all points in-between, we saw our visitors
grow from 393 in 2010 to 1,711 in 2011. From Climbing/Rappelling; to whitewater rafting; to mountain biking; to shooting sports and
camporees, everyone went away thrilled to have spent time at Latimer. Exciting plans for activities to be added in 2012 will be announced at
the Summer Camp Kickoff in January. You don’t want to miss out!
Construction is still going strong. In 2011 we completed Lake Joe Long (21 acre man-made lake) and installed an 80 year old renovated bridge
over the spillway; completed the Tolbert Center (named in honor of Hershel Tolbert long-time Scout Executive in MTC) which houses the
HCA Health Center, Program Management Office, Store and Conference Center; and completed the Corporate Cabin and the 1800’s Log
Cabin.
Currently we have the Dining Hall and Chapel under construction. Pictured here are the architectural
concepts for these two structures. We hope to have both finished sometime in the summer of
2012. We also will begin construction in 2012 for a state-of-the-art observatory. You don’t
want to miss the night sky at Latimer. Our goal is to fully dedicate Latimer High
Adventure Reservation in late fall 2012. Yes, you will want to be a part of the
celebration!
On November 10, 2011, friends old and new gathered at the home of Al
and Sylvia Ganier to celebrate the many facets of Scouting alumni. The
Middle Tennessee Council Alumni has alumni groups that recognize
former Scouters from camp staff, prior professionals, NESA members,
and general Scouting alumni. The Ganier’s provided guests a wonderful
evening with entertainment and lots of great food. In addition to the fun,
awards were given out to some outstanding Eagle Scouts and alumni for
their achievements.
The NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout award is a prestigious recognition
granted by the local council’s NESA committee to Eagles who have
demonstrated outstanding achievement at the local, state or regional level.
Middle Tennessee Council NESA recognized four impressive men with
this award. Major General John Campbell, Judge John Bryant, Buford
“Booty” Reed, and Dan Slipkovich each received this award for major
contributions in their respective fields. We once again say congratulations
to each of these men, and thank you for all you have done to support the
Boy Scouts.
The second presentation centered around the Outstanding Alumni Award,
granted to those former Scouts who have made significant contributions
to their profession and their communities on a local or national level.
Middle Tennessee Council presented Major General Max Haston and
Colonel Gary Littleton with this award, and we appreciate both for their
contributions to the Boy Scouts of America.
In addition to these council awards presented, five men were recognized
with the new National Alumni Award. The award is designed to recognize
an alumni’s accomplishments in alumni identification and promotion,
engagement, personal participation and personal education. Those
receiving the award were Ray Capp, Tim Acree, Ian Romaine, David
Williams, and Danny Sutherland.
Again, congratulations to all the award recipients, and thank you for your
continued work to help support the Middle Tennessee Council Boy Scouts
of America!
Veterans Day is an opportunity for Scouts to honor our Veterans
for their selfless service to our nation. Scouts across the Middle
Tennessee area took the opportunity to attend various parades and
events to honor all branches of our military.
In downtown Nashville, Scouts proudly waved American flags,
Tennessee flags, and Unit flags as they marched in the Annual
Veterans Day Parade. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and
Scouters all participated in this great downtown parade and
honored those who served our country.
What is University of Scouting? It is a one day supplemental training for all volunteers
What will I do at the University of Scouting? You will take specialized classes towards earning a Bachelors, Masters or
Doctorate Degree from the School of Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting or Venturing.
How do I register? To register go to www.mtcbsa.org. The cost for the event is $25 which includes a patch, appreciation gift, lunch and
a certificate.
How do I volunteer to teach at U of S? Volunteers are approved by the Dean of each college. Volunteers will receive a patch,
lunch, staff gift and credit hours for each class taught. The cost for instructors is $25 and can be paid online during the registration process.

Over 350 mid-state business leaders attended the 11th Annual BSA Extravaganza,
held November 15th at LP Field’s Westside Stadium Club. This sports facility was
transformed into an elegant setting for a gala event featuring a delicious cocktail
supper, live music, and fabulous live and silent auctions. The 2011 theme was “Be
Prepared for Life” which corresponds with this year’s BSA’s National Theme. The
auction boasted over 270 items, including a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, an
Ultimate Titan Experience, a Nashville Predators Game “Road Trip,” golf at Chattanooga’s
Honors Course, a private dinner by Sunset Grill and many other unique items.

Rick Olszewski, LP Building Products Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing
and a member of our council’s Executive Board, chaired a very active committee that
secured a wide array of support for the Extravaganza in the form of sponsorship,
participant registration and live and silent auction items. This unique event will
provide over $63,000 in support for our Scouting Program during 2011.
Over four weekends in October, more that 17,826 arrows were shot at targets, 288 miles of
hayrides were taken, and 26,739 recognition beads were earned! These beads were given to
Cub Scouts for participating in activities throughout the weekend. 8,424 Cub Scouts and
their families spent the weekend at Boxwell in a fun outdoor experience including time
at the new Pirates Cove, castle, Indian Village, Cubworld dining hall and many
other places.
Weekends like these require volunteer support to make them successful. A
special thank you goes to Ray Young and his weekend chairmen for giving
the Middle Tennessee Council Cub Scouts and their families a program to
remember. These chairmen include: Angela Hallmark, Wendy Morgan,
Daniel Phipps, Daniel Buckner and Regina Harrison. We also want to
thank the weekend staffers that volunteered to assist in many aspects of
the weekend from helping on the Archery Range to driving a tractor.
Thank you to each of our 235 Packs for attending the weekends. If
you missed this year’s Cub and Families, you will want to mark your
calendar for next year to attend the Cub and Family weekend to be
held in October of 2012.
The annual BSA Golf Classic was held on October 11 at Gaylord Springs Golf Links. Larry Powell
of UPS and Pete Ezell of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, served as this year’s
event co-chairs. A huge thanks goes to them and their committee members - Richard Drumright,
Ross Browner, Sam Phillips, Daniel Widener, Jack Wood and Lelan Statom – for helping put
together this exceptional event.
Because of the committee’s efforts, we had a full course of 32 teams. Through the support of team
sponsors, tee marker sponsors and a silent auction, over $30,000 was raised for Scouting in Middle
Tennessee.
Additional thanks go to Neely’s Barbecue, Aramark Refreshments and Ajax Turner for providing in-kind items to help keep our
expenses down. Finally, a special thanks to Gaylord Springs for their support to make the event a memorable one.

Those who attended the Middle Tennessee Council’s 4th
annual College of Commissioner Science, held on Saturday,
November 5th at Brentwood United Methodist Church in
Brentwood, were met by National, Regional and Area
Scouters. Tim Acree, Assistant Council Commissioner, served
as Dean of the College. Wayne Brock, Deputy Chief Scout
Executive and Tico Perez, National Commissioner of the Boy
Scouts of America, were special guests of the college. Wayne
was able to share the importance of keeping our kids involved
as the “Main Thing”. Tico explained the importance of unit
visitation, and logging those visits in the Unit Visitation
Tracking System. With 14 out-of Council Commissioners,
and 87 Middle Tennessee Council Commissioners attending,
teaching and leading the courses, the College of
Commissioner Science for 2011 maintained the quality of
excellence it is known for.

The Midnight Ski Adventure is quickly approaching. We will be departing for
Paoli Peaks Ski Resort in Paoli, Indiana on January 14th and returning
on January 15th. If you are not registered as a Venturer or Explorer, $116
will allow your participation in this event.
The cost covers registration, adequate accident and liability insurance,
transportation, lift ticket, skis and/or snowboard, boots, and beginner lesson.
Each youth must bring $10 for dinner. Parents and chaperones are encouraged
to participate. If you are an adult and you are skiing, your cost will be $75; if
you are not, the cost to attend will be $50.
We plan to have a lot of fun but nothing ruins a great day of fun as much as an
accident that didn’t have to happen so be prepared. Wear water resistant and
warm clothes and accessories. Ultimately, safe skiing and snowboarding on the
mountain is each person’s responsibility.

For many of us, as the weather gets colder and more unpleasant, a fascinating phenomenon begins to take
place. It’s called “the bug,” and if you’ve been a staff member at Boxwell Reservation, then you know that
this time of year begins the gnawing anxiousness and excitement about returning to Boxwell staff. While
summer is months away, staff interviews happen in the winter. Fortunately, you don’t have to just reflect
on the good ole days. We want you to get back involved!
The Boxwell Staff Alumni committee had its first meeting on Dec. 11, bringing together program directors past and present. In
attendance were members of the current staff Lee Craft, Steve Eubank, Ian Weir and Perry Bruce, as well as former staff members
Jerry Barnett, Kerry Parker, Russ Parham and Grady Eades. Everyone in attendance has either been or is a Program Director and we’re
focused on ways to re-engage former Staff Members.
Over the next few months, we will be looking to the former Boxwell staff members to participate in activities, including merit badge
sessions, and a Staff Alumni Gathering later this year. The committee is also looking at ways to reach out to former staff members and
help everyone communicate. The group is open to ideas and volunteers, but most importantly looks forward to working with former
staff members in whatever capacity possible.

There is a lot of activity going on over in New River Gorge, West
Virginia as they prepare for the first ever Jamboree at the Summit
Bechtel Reserve. Construction is underway for Mayhem Mountain,
Adventure Valley, the Aquatics area, Technology basecamp and many more areas
of High Adventure. This Jamboree will be very similar in layout to the World
Jamboree, with 20 Sub Camps and five Villages for the Scouts.
To sign up for this historic event, simply go to www.bsajamboree.org and create
an account, then pay $150 Deposit to the Middle Tennessee Council. Scouts will
be given a menu of options for their trip to the Summit rather than go as one
big group. Look for more information on these options in early 2012.
The annual Boy Scout Sporting Clays Fun Shoot, which was sponsored by Piedmont Natural Gas, was held on Saturday, September
24th, at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex in Nashville. The shooting venue went very well and consisted of a 100 target competitive
round of Sporting Clays. We had 43 teams participating, including 75 Scouts and Scholastic Trap Team Members who competed on 15
youth teams.

The shoot went smoothly with all participants enjoying the competition. It also featured great food, including breakfast provided by
Sysco Nashville, and an outstanding Bar-B-Q lunch provided by Sysco Nashville, Sara Lee Meats and Jim and Nick’s Bar-B-Q. Our
projected net income is over $40,000 which is an excellent result. We owe a debt of gratitude to Tim Greenhouse, of Piedmont Natural
Gas, who chaired our shoot this year and led a very energetic committee who did a great job in securing support for this unique event
benefiting Scouting.
Cub Scout Day Camp: Offered throughout the summer in various geographical areas of Middle Tennessee. This
program, which runs Monday through Friday, offers a fun filled week of challenging Cub Scout activities, exciting adventures
and new friendships. Programs during the week include water excitement, archery and BB shooting sports, crafts, nature
projects, Scout skills and many other themed activities.
Cub Scout Resident Camp: This three day weekend experience offers swimming, fishing, archery, games, campfires,
bb gun shooting sports and rank advancement for Scouts in 1st-3rd grade in the fall of 2012, as well as one adult per Scout is
invited to participate.
Webelos Resident Camp: Rising 4th and 5th grade Webelos can attend a 4-day-week camp experience. This outdoor

Forester/Naturalist, Geologist, Outdoorsman, Scientist, Engineer and Sportsman Webelos Activity Pins or they may choose to
do the Scout skills program. This program to consist of classes in First Aid, Fire Building, Knots, Lashings, and Orienteering.

Community Day 2011
Shoney’s has once again put on a
Navigators event to remember! In
September, Shoney’s held a two day
event to raise funds for the Navigators
Scholarship program. The event began
at Gaylord Springs with a dinner and
auction followed by a performance
from Patrick Thomas, Finalist on
NBC’s The Voice. The next morning
the golfers hit the Gaylord course with
the rain holding out long enough to make the perfect weather to
play golf!
The Navigators program recognizes Metro Nashville Public
School seniors that are in the AVID program. Each year
scholarships are awarded to deserving youth. In the 2010
graduating class, four $13,000 and fifteen $1,000 recipients
were chosen to receive scholarships for this past fall enrollment
at the college or university of their choice. Over the past four
years, 113 students have received over $322,000 in scholarships.
HCA offers its employees one day a year during this
campaign, and outside of their Caring for Community Hours,
to volunteer with their colleagues at various non-profit
organizations throughout Middle Tennessee. The goal is not
only to support the needs of our partner agencies, but also to
expose employees to a wider range of community
organizations, enabling more meaningful community-based
relationships to develop. This year, 1,835 HCA employees
volunteered with more than 130 projects, donating more than
10,000 volunteer hours.

29th this year for Community Day.
On December Third the Wa-Hi-Nasa gathered for our
Annual Awards Banquet at First Presbyterian Church in
Nashville. We had a wonderful evening with family
and friends, fellowship and recognition. Some of the
recognitions awarded were: Founders Award to Mikel Venable, Legacy
Fellowship to Ray Capp, Ian Romaine, Chris Snoddy and David Williams for
their continued support of the Order of the Arrow.
The banquet hall was filled as we had a group
of around 200 members and guests in
attendance all there to support their local
Chapter and the Lodge. While this was a
wonderful way to conclude 2011 we are very
excited about the upcoming events in 2012
including National Order of the Arrow
Conference (NOAC) in July and two
opportunities to visit Latimer, OAU in March
and Fall Fellowship in September.
The 2012 Lodge Officers were also installed at the banquet. A full list
of the officers is on page 14.

Beginning on January 17, 2012, a new collectible coin series will be available in
the Middle Tennessee Council Scout Shops. Each month a new coin will debut
with a different icon from the middle Tennessee area. January will feature the
Nashville skyline, the first Scout Law, “A Scout is Trustworthy”, and will be
dated “January 2012”. The reverse side of the coin will have a beautiful fleur
delis circled by “Middle Tennessee Council, Boy Scouts of America”. The
reverse face of the coins will remain constant throughout the year while the front
of the coin will change to show a different scene, month, and Scout Law each
month. The coins are brass with a lustrous hard enamel finish. Future month
scenes will include the 101st Airborne, Ryman Auditorium, Latimer Reservation,
Grimes Canoe Base, Boxwell Reservation, state capital building, and other
notable scenes from our area. This is the perfect gift to collect for your child or
yourself, and at only $14.99 per coin is one of the most affordable pieces ever
offered.
The first coin will be available on January 17, 2012, and all other coins will arrive
on the first of each month. Coins will be available in all middle Tennessee Scout
Shop locations – Nashville, Clarksville, and Murfreesboro. Phone orders will be
available in Nashville, but orders must be placed monthly for each coin. We are
unable to accommodate requests for the entire collection with just one phone call.
There will only be 50 of each coin per month produced, and with the thousands of
volunteers and Scouts in the Middle Tennessee Council are sure to go fast.
Whistleblower Policy
The Council is committed to the highest possible
standards of ethical, moral, and legal business in
concert with the Scout Oath and Law. The Council
has always committed itself to open communications
with the Open-Door Policy – avenues for employees
and volunteers to raise concerns.
In the fall of 2005, the Executive Committee further
assured employees and volunteers that they will be protected from reprisals for
whistle blowing in good faith – a policy that is intended to cover serious
concerns that could have a negative impact on the Council, such as actions
that:
v May lead to incorrect financial reporting
v Are unlawful
v Are not in line with Council policy or membership irregularities
v Constitute some other unethical or improper conduct
Confidentiality will be maintained, but to facilitate the investigation, the
Council cannot investigate anonymous complaints. Complainants must put
their names to allegations. Confidentiality will be maintained unless the
whistleblower agrees to have his/her identity revealed.

2012. Brian started his career with the council in
February, 2010 and serves as District Executive of
the Dan Beard District. Since he joined the team,

Brian served a two year mission in the Dominican
Republic after completing high school. He then earned his Bachelor’s degree
from Mesa State College in Grand Junction, CO and a master’s degree from
Belmont University. His main professional focus was sports administration
and he worked with the Nashville Kats, Vanderbilt Athletics, and University of
Iowa in Sports Marketing.
We are all blessed to have Brian and his wife Bridgette as part of the Middle
Tennessee Council family. This award is well deserved.
Employee News
The Middle Tennessee Council welcomes the new
full time employee in the Scout Shop. Many of
you recognize Travis Treece, as he has been a part
time employee at the Service Center as well as
Assistant at Boxwell Summer Camp. Upon
completion of his college degree, Travis worked as
an Environmental Health Specialist in Waycross,
GA but returned to Nashville when this position
became available. Travis earned his Eagle Scout
badge in 2004. He and his new bride, Ashley, are
a welcome addition to the council family.
The volunteers of Highland Rim District welcome
the newest commissioned professional Scouter to
their area. Bradford Shoemaker has been involved
in Scouting since first grade. He earned his Eagle
Scout rank at age thirteen, earned all 120 merit
badges available at the time and secured fifteen
Eagle Scout Palms. Because of his outstanding
record in this area, Bradford was awarded an
$8,000 NESA scholarship toward his college
tuition. He received his degree in Industrial
Engineering at Georgia Tech but had always felt
that Scouting was his future. He joined the staff in
May, 2011 as a trainee and is now commissioned as a
District Executive in the Highland Rim District.
The Middle Tennessee Council would like to
congratulate David Williams, Director of Field
Service, on his promotion to the Circle Ten Council
in Dallas, Texas as the Deputy Scout Executive.
David, an Eagle Scout, has served as a professional
Scouter for fourteen years including positions as a
District Executive, Field Director, Finance Director
and his current position as Director of Field Service.

The District Pinewood Derby is going to be on March 3rd at the Three Star Mall in
McMinnville. It will be a chance to race against Cub Scouts from all four counties of the
district. Who is going to have the fastest car? It’s time to pick up your Pinewood Derby kit
and get ready to race!
Adults need Recognition, too!
The time has come for all the great volunteers of Black Fox District to be recognized and
appreciated at our annual District Banquet! So that we can present the Adult Leader Knots
at the banquet, we need you to fill out adult recognition applications, and turn them into
Gail Pack, the Black Fox district training chair. This event is going to be held on March
17th at Friendship Baptist Church in Rock Island. All adult leaders from Packs, Troops, or
Crews are invited. We will have a great time. I hope to see you all there!

Spring Camping is Ready....
While looking forward to spring fun, set the dates for Cub and Boy Scout camping
opportunities. Our spring Cub and Family will be held in April at Cub World and our Boy
Scout Camporee is set for March 23-25 at Boxwell. This is why most of your boys join
Scouting, so set the stage for them to have a great camping season!
Boys, Start Your Engines!!!
This year’s district pinewood derby promises excitement, fun and a super exciting day at
the races! For those boys lucky enough to have been in the winner’s circle at your pack
race, you will be competing in the Cherokee District Pinewood Race at the Bass Pro Shops
Invitational. Also, everyone is invited to watch the race and participate in the fun. We are
fortunate enough this year to have Bass Pro Shops host our race, but there will be much
more than racing! We are making a day of it, with a fishing pond, archery range, camp site
models, canoeing, and lots more. Plan to make a day of scouting at the races on March
17th, and we look forward to seeing all of you there!

Cubmobile Race
The 2011 Cogioba District Cubmobile Race was held on Saturday, November 5th. The
Scouts and their families all had a fun-filled and exciting day in the brisk fall sunshine.
Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos all raced their cars down the ramps to victory as they
crossed the finish line. Pit row was full of activity, with Scouts practicing their steering
and stopping techniques, as well as having the mechanics (dads) work on the cars that had
“mechanical” issues. Everyone had a great time, lots of smiles and high fives could be
seen throughout the day.
Commissioner Corner
Alex Koehler’s Eagle project involved a blood drive recently held at Clarksville Academy.
Not only did his project help the community, but it assisted in the blood collection efforts
of the American Red Cross. Several other Scouts from the Cogioba District participated in
the project. Hopefully we can continue to help organize future blood drives in the Cogioba
District.
Local Pack 502 conducted a flag retirement ceremony at Walking Horse and then a flag
ceremony at Uffelman Estates. It seems everyone enjoyed the events and it was a great
experience for the boys. Thanks for letting the boys be a part of your events.

Troop 525 went camping recently at Fort Henry. The older boys completed a 15 mile hike.
The younger boys hiked 7 miles and completed their 2nd class hiking requirements.
Additionally, they collected nine large bags of trash in the area and removed it when they
left.
Thanksgiving Titan Style
With Thanksgiving behind us and five extra pounds upon us, the Dan Beard District is
getting ready for the holidays. During the Thanksgiving weekend Packs 54, 205, 924, 600,
227 and Troop 275 enjoyed a wet day watching the Tennessee Titans win in dramatic
fashion against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over 100 tickets were given to the Dan Beard
District. These tickets were for Scouts and parents that have never attended a Titans’ game
and were a gift by an anonymous donor.
New Pack
I am excited to announce that Pack 180 over at Una Church of Christ has started back up
again, with Natasha Blackshear as the Cubmaster. She has hit the ground running and we are
excited to have her in the Scouting family as she guides more than 17 Scouts, parents and
volunteers.
College of Commissioner Science
At the beginning of November, the College of Commissioner Science took place for all
commissioners to attend. All of the Dan Beard District commissioners attended; the only
district in the council to have perfect attendance. They also had the chance to meet Tico
Perez, the National Commissioner, who came in for the weekend to teach some classes and
answer questions.
Service Projects
Back in early fall, the Scouts participated in a few service projects within the community.
Pack 429 took a Saturday afternoon to help clean up the community to make it a nicer place

food drive and collected 1,241 pounds of food.
As the district goes forth making our area a better place to live, let me say thank you to

All adult leaders in the Duck River District, as well as the 2010 Eagle Class of the Duck
River District, are invited to attend the Duck River District Banquet on Friday evening,
January 27th at Vest Hall on the campus of Columbia Academy. The cost of the banquet is
underwritten by “Friends of Scouting” so there is no cost for our leaders and Eagle Scouts
and their families. At the banquet we will recognize 3-4 adult volunteers with the highest
award given by a Scouting district - the District Award of Merit (traditionally known as the
Long Rifle Award in the Middle Tennessee Council). Also individual leaders, as well as
units, will be recognized for outstanding service to youth. We will also be honoring our
2011 Eagle Scout class. Please make reservations in advance so we can make proper

Remember to Begin Early on 2012 Recharters
Units are encouraged to start early on the recharter process so the membership can be
turned in on time for the Journey to Excellence qualification and other considerations such
as youth advancement. Units are encouraged to use the online recharter program which
can be found on the council website at www.mtcbsa.org. Remember to visit the Middle
Tennessee Council website www.mtcbsa.org on a regular basis to keep up with district and
council activities, training, etc.

Fire EMS Weekend
All Fire and EMS posts are invited to participate in the weekend long event held at the
Tennessee State Fire Academy in Bell Buckle, TN. On April 13th – 15th we will begin this
training and competition event. Explorers will get a chance to participate in at a facility

Boy Scouts “get lost” at 2011 Fall Camporee
This year’s David Crockett District Fall Camporee was held in Lynnville at Milky Way
Farm, the farm of the late Frank Mars, founder of the Mars Candy Company. The
participating Boy Scouts got to test their compass skills with an orienteering course,
organized by longtime Scouter, Bill Wendt. Mr. Wendt organized four different courses that
encompassed the over 1000 acres that comprise the beautiful Milky Way Farm. Each course
covered a distance of around three miles through some very intense terrain. Mr. Wendt led a
refresher course on orienteering on Friday night at his cabin near the farm. He must have
done a pretty good job because everyone made it to the final destination, the mausoleum
created for Frank Mars. This location has some of the most spectacular views in Giles
County, and most likely, Middle Tennessee. This was a truly awesome Camporee, and the
over 70 Scouts that participated had a great time. We all need to give a special thanks to Mr.
Bill Wendt for setting up the logistics of the orienteering course and securing this
magnificent location for us to have this year’s Camporee. We also need to thank Mrs. Lynn
Golden and her family, the owners of Milky Way Farms, for allowing us to use their
property for this event.
Hermitage - Serving Donelson, Hermitage, Mt, Juliet and Gladeville
Dodson Appreciation Celebration
On Thursday, October 6, 2011, Cub Scout Pack 43 made a special presentation to the Pack’s
sponsor organization Dodson Elementary and the Dodson PTO. Cub Scouts from each den
participated in presenting the Colors and leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegience. A
new American Flag was presented to Dodson Elementary Principal Tiffany Curtis and PTO
President Joyce Shrieve, along with a Plaque of Appreciation in recognition of Dodson
Elementary and the Dodson PTO for sponsorship and support of Pack 43 for over 60 years.
Highland Rim Hikes Latimer During
The Fall Camporee!
For the 2012 Highland Rim Fall Camporee,
nine Troops from the district traveled to what is
rapidly becoming known as the Philmont of the
East. Scouts hiked to scenic vistas, toured the
new facilities, and marveled at the beauty of
Lake Joe Long. During the camporee, Troops
competed in a variety of activities such as a biathlon, dinner cook-off, and a tug-of-war.
According to one Scoutmaster “I have been to 3
or 4 Fall Camporees and feel this was the finest yet.”
We would like to thank Emory Henley, the camporee Scoutmaster, and Joe Webb, Highland
Rim camping chair, for making this event such a success!
The Loss of a Scout
Highland Rim is deeply saddened by the death of Scout Brian Tyler Brown. Brian was a
junior at Sycamore High School and a member of Troop 545 in Ashland City. Brian was an
honorable and dedicated Scout and will be greatly missed.
Honoring Veterans
Troops and Packs throughout the district showed thankfulness and patriotism to our nation’s
veterans. Scouts participated in community Veterans Day parades and ceremonies in all four
counties of Highland Rim. All of our Scouts and Scouters would like to sincerely thank our
veterans for their dedication and sacrifice. Waverly Pack 575 marched 31 Scouts in the
Humphreys County Veterans Day parade. Each Scout was presented with their own
American flag by the Exchange Club of Waverly’s “Give a kid a flag” program.

The James E West BALOO training will be held on January 21, 2012 at Belle Meade
United Methodist Church, 121 Davidson Road. Our Cubmaster for the event will be our
very own Kathy Gaidos. The cost for the event will be $10; this will include the cost of
the cooking demonstrations (which you get to eat) and lunch. It is mandatory that Packs
have a BALOO trained adult on overnight trips that are not sanctioned MTC events (please
check Tour Plan for specific information). Please encourage your Pack to have at least two
BALOO trained leaders. You will learn the basics of what you need to do to insure you

Popcorn Sale Thank You
A big thanks to Samantha Elliot for chairing our popcorn efforts this year. We certainly
were popping along with a 27% increase over last years sales! We had several units sell
for the first time and, thanks to the hard work of the boys and adults, we have about 30%
more money funding our programs in the West District.

Since we have moved our Roundtables to Belle Meade United Methodist Church, we have
seen about a 200% increase in participation on the Boy Scout side, and a 400% increase in
Cub Scout Roundtable. This is outstanding and we have two very well prepared
Commissioners spearheading this growth. Richards Hill and Kathy Gaidos are delivering a
quality program that is well worth the drive. We will not meet in January due to the
District Banquet, but will resume the normal schedule in February of meeting every 2nd
Thursday at 7 PM. See you there.

The relays were very successful—the Scouts strategized
with the others in their troop after being told what they
would be doing. The Scouts had fun and competed with
all their heart. The district would like to thank Sabrina,

The Scouts, of course, had the camporee-wide football game.
The weather was great for outdoor activities. All the Scouts
went on the nature hike along with Sabrina Gresham and Jerry
Schwieger. We identified a lot of plants and animals. The skits
were very funny and entertaining. We had a great time in the
Nashboro District at our Fall Camporee. It will be a wonderful
memory for all of us for some time.
Nashboro District Holiday Round Table Dinner
Key leaders on the commissioner staff decided to change things up a little with a holiday
dinner during Roundtable. A time of fellowship and fun is always welcomed in Scouting.
Everyone brought dishes and desserts, which created an element of surprise. Food has a
way of making a meeting more exciting. As we reflected over a successful year in 2011, we
have to give thanks to Alicia Riggans for serving as our Cub Scout Round Table
Commissioner and Bill Martin for serving as Boy Scout Round Table Commissioner.

Eagle Project - Flag Retirement
On Saturday, November 19th, Nicholas Kniazewycz held
his Eagle Project by conducting a community flag
retirement ceremony for the City of Mount Juliet, TN.
Nicholas is a member of Troop 1204 (chartered to St.
Stephen Catholic Community in Old Hickory, TN).
Various retirement ceremonies were used throughout the
day with Scouts from the Troop taking part in the
ceremonies and placing flags on the fire. Over 140 flags
were retired. Also, a POW flag was donated to the local
American Legion Post. As a special addition to his
project, the grommets from the flags were collected and
will be polished and distributed to veterans.

Backpacking
On the first two weekends of November, Troop 1204
(chartered to St. Stephen Catholic Community in Old
Hickory) went on two backpacking outings. The first
weekend was a beginner backpacking trip at Montgomery
Bell State Park. This introductory trip was for Scouts new
to backpacking. The follow weekend, the Troop headed
to Frozen Head State Park and hiked over eight miles and
climbed to the top of the fire tower. This trip provided an opportunity for the Scouts to
experience backpacking like might be found at Philmont, where the Troop is heading in 2013.
Natchez Trace - Serving Williamson County
District OLS/OWLS
The Natchez Trace District Training Team outdid themselves, November 11th and 12th at
“The Barn” by providing BALOO, Outdoor Leadership Skills for Boy Scout and Webelos
Leaders all at the same time and location. While challenging the windy weather, 63 Scouters
completed OLS/OWLS and 31 Cub Scouters completed BALOO.

Welcome
Let’s give a big welcome to Dr. Tracy Pack as our new district chairman. Dr. Pack has a
strong background in Scouting. Some of his accomplishments include; attaining the rank of
Eagle as a youth, serving as a Den Leader, Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster and most
recently as the Assistant District Chairman. He has served as a Table Host for the Friends of
Scouting Luncheon and also is very active in the Murfreesboro community.
Training
Without knowledge it would be very difficult to guide our young folks to success. There are
several ways you can be trained and I encourage you to get as much information as possible.
Throughout the year our district offers face to face training, hands on training and there is
always the opportunity for you to go online and train. Also, if you have not taken the time to
do so, please update your records with our Training Chairperson Mindi Bell.
Winter Camporee
The annual Trail of Tears Winter Camporee at Camp Tubb was a great success. Thanks to all
that participated and special thanks go out to Troop 197 for being the host. Thanks to Dan
Onkst for pulling all the events together. We all look forward to next year.
District Banquet
It is about that time of year again where we celebrate the accomplishments of the district and
more importantly, the accomplishment of our volunteers. The banquet will take place
Saturday, March 10th, at Blackman United Methodist Church. If you have any awards you
want to receive, please turn those in as soon as possible to Marty Bell or Mike Cowles.
The Future
As all of you know, society is a bit troubling right now, but, I assure you we live in the
“GREATEST COUNTRY” there is. We, as Americans, have rights no one else has and to
ensure we keep those rights it is up to us to give our young folks everything they need to be
successful by learning how to do things the right way. By being a part of the Scouts, they
can and will do the right things to continue making this the best country in the world.

Fall Events
We have just had a great Scouting fall season. Our Viking Challenge was a huge success.
Many fine young Vikings came out to compete in the games, and best one another. Thank
you Dan Fenlon for chairing a great Fall event! Webelos Weekend has also passed for this
year, and thanks for that goes to Virginia Mayfield! This was the first Scouting event that
Virginia has chaired, and did anyone else think she was a natural at it? It felt like she had
done a hundred of them to me. Cool at night, beautiful days, and lots of boys and adults
having fun. That is how this year’s fall events played out.

Fall Camporee - Let the Adventure Begin
After a long, winding, ascending road trip on an October Friday afternoon, the Troops of
Walton Trail arrived for their first fall camporee at a special place on the Cumberland
Plateau, the new BSA high adventure reservation called Latimer, where they could “Let
the Adventure Begin.” As host for the event, Troop 302 was truly “smokin”, Mother
Nature was her colorful best, and the fish were jumping for joy in the manmade lake, the
centerpiece for surrounding campers. The Man in the Moon even showed up at
nightfall, saving much battery life and lighting the way on the chilly nights. During the
daytime, the Troops explored some of the 1,500 acres of rugged, diverse forest and
encountered high elevation escarpments which offered a bird’s view of treetops and
streams below. After a Saturday night feast and bonding at the bonfire, Troops and guest
Webelos settled in for their last night with thankfulness and dreams of returning to this
awesome place to continue their adventure.

shape the future of not only young men, but also of Walton Trail. As we build a strong
foundation, the need for new volunteers becomes more important than ever. The units in
each city and county have grown stronger; with that we have the opportunity to

traditional units we have expanded the programs in Venturing as well as Exploring. With
that growth comes the need for leadership to properly serve the youths who are

Every month we have an opportunity for you and your leaders to fellowship, LEARN, and
have fun. Roundtable is for all leaders and is the best place to get information on upcoming
events and activities in both the District and the Council. Newcomers are always welcome
as we share ideas, ask questions and help each other out. Roundtables are held every 2nd
Monday of the month.
Upcoming Events in the New Year
2012 promises to be another exciting year for activities in the Warioto District. We are
currently in the process of planning the District Banquet. While we work at securing a date
and location, start turning in your requests for the knots and awards that your unit is eligible
for. The highlight of this evening will be the presentation of the Long Rifle Award.
As if the boys need reminding, there is a ton of fun just around the corner for the Warioto
Scouts. The Pinewood Derby, the Spring Cub and Family and Boy Scout Camporee and
the annual Warioto Ski trip are all currently in the planning stages with dates to be
announced in the near future. Stay tuned for more information on these events.
Something for everyone
Thank you to each of your for your support you give our young people. The Warioto
District wants all Scout parents to feel welcome at all activities. If you have questions or

Description: The Unit Award of Marketing Excellence is for Packs, Troops,
Teams, Crews, Posts and Ships. The award is designed to encourage units to
share all the good things they do with their local media such as T.V., radio,
local papers, school newspapers, church bulletins, and any other media.
How to Apply: A unit will complete the application form along with a copy
of the media that was published. The application and the media will then
need to be mailed or delivered to: Middle Tennessee Council-Boy Scouts of
America, 3414 Hillsboro Pike, PO Box 150409, Nashville, TN 37215
Recognition: Participation - All units who submit an application will
receive a certificate along with a special streamer for their unit flag.
Quarterly Winners will receive a special patch for each member of their
unit.
