WEATHER DELAY PROCEDURES
Weather delay and cancellation information will be called in to the local radio and television stations listed below. We will
typically make the call by 6:30 A.M. so that coordination with other county buses on special routes to Findlay are
maintained. You may also check on the internet at www.wfin.com/delays.htm.

TWO-HOUR DELAYS DUE TO WEATHER
If weather or other conditions warrant the delay of school, Arlington will first utilize a two-hour delay schedule to allow the
conditions to improve. On a two-hour delay, students may enter the building at 9:55 A.M. with announcements beginning
at 10:01 A.M. and classes beginning at 10:05 A.M. Students would be dismissed at 3:05 P.M.
Morning preschool will meet from 10:05 A.M. – 12:05 P.M. and afternoon preschool will meet from 1:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M.
THREE-HOUR DELAYS
If weather or other conditions exist beyond a two-hour delay, Arlington will first utilize a three-hour delay schedule to allow
the conditions to improve. On a three-hour delay, students may enter the building at 10:55 A.M. with announcements
beginning at 11:01 A.M. and classes beginning at 11:05 A.M. Students would be dismissed at 4:05 P.M. Our bus
schedule would run on a three hour adjusted schedule in the morning and a one hour late adjusted schedule in the
afternoon. Sports and other schedules also would be adjusted by approximately one hour, with games starting as soon
as possible allowing for travel.
Morning preschool will meet from 11:05 A.M. – 1:05 P.M. and afternoon preschool will meet from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.
The goal of this concept is to be able to hold school on any given day which would then avoid the requirement of a make
up day needing to be scheduled.
WALKERS
Now through Friday, February 26, 20156 designated areas of the building will be open to community members who like to
walk for exercise. Walkers are welcome to use the facility on days school is in session from 6:00 - 7:45 A.M. and from
7:00 - 8:30 P.M. (except during home basketball games or performances). Walkers in the morning should use the
multipurpose doors to enter the building. Evening walkers are asked to enter the facility through the new gym doors.
COMMUNITY OPEN GYM
The old gym will be open to adult community members on Thursdays (school days only) beginning now and ending
February 12, 2016 from 8:00 - 9:30 P.M. Participants are asked to wear clean basketball shoes and to bring their own
basketballs. Current students and young children are not permitted in the gym during this activity. The multipurpose
doors should be used to enter and exit the facility. If there is an evening performance in the auditorium, there will be
no open gym.

Scheduling for 2016-2017
We will begin the scheduling process for the 2016-2017 school year in the next month or two. Teachers and
administrators are updating the course of study, and later this winter/early spring we will work with students on selecting
their course requests for next year. Stay tuned for more information!
Little Caesars Pizza Fundraiser
Thank You to all who participated in the Class of 2016 Little Caesars Pizza fundraiser. Money raised through this sale will
help reduce the cost of the Senior Trip to New York City in March. Pizzas are scheduled to be delivered to the school on
Friday, February 5, and students should deliver those to you after school that day – just in time for your Super Bowl
celebrations that Sunday!

Counselor's Corner
Welcome Back! I hope that you had an enjoyable holiday and a restful break. January brings the conclusion of the first
semester on the 15th with grade cards due home on the 22nd. Hard to believe that half of our school year has passed
already!
College-going seniors should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible found at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. The priority deadline is February 15 so make sure to have this completed prior to then to be eligible for
financial aid through the college. Most colleges will not distribute any scholarships, grants or local aid until this document
has been filed. Since most folks will not have their 2015 taxes completed prior to this date, the 2014 tax information
should be used to estimate. Once taxes are completed for this year the IRS Retrieval Button may be used approximately
two weeks after filing to update the FAFSA. Letters will then be sent to families in March with estimates of what each
student will be eligible for from all schools they have applied. Peak local scholarship application time will be between
February and May. Please make sure that deadlines are respected and watch Remind and senior emails for
opportunities to get that extra financial help. Shelly Joseph from the Community Foundation will meet with Seniors on
February 4th to make sure they understand how to apply for local scholarships handled through them. Also several
apprenticeship opportunities are shared with seniors so if not interested in college, these are wonderful options to enter
directly into the world of work.
Sophomores and Juniors should be applying to Millstream Career Center if they are interested in attending next year.
These applications are online and due by February 1, 2016. Please feel free to ask if any help is needed in this process.
All students will be scheduling for next school year within the next few months. Please watch for further information to be
coming home related to this.
Campfire of NW Ohio will be coming on January 15th and 19th-22nd to work with our seventh grade on self reliance skills.
Zachary Ellifritz will facilitate and conduct their Peer Proof program in Mr. Leonard's classes. This program is designed to
teach "how to resist negative peer pressure and maintain positive friendships. Role-playing makes this a fun way to learn
important lessons about making good friends as well as being one. This course consists of five 45-minute sessions." It is
one more way we will encourage our students to develop the skills for success.
February 18th at 7:00 P.M. will be a meeting for any student grades 7-12 interested in taking College Credit Plus. This is
the old Postsecondary Option program for students who are interested in earning both high school and college credit.
Again many changes are coming down from the state, so please make sure to watch for the meeting date if this is
something that your child will be interested. In order to be eligible to participate next year, this meeting MUST be
attended and paperwork completed prior to the end of March.
As always if you have any questions or concerns, please know that I am here to support and help students and families
find their pathway to success. Feel free to call, email or contact me in any way to let me know how I can be of support.
Stay warm and healthy during this cold season!

AHS MATHLETES
Mathletes is continuing to help numerous students on a weekly basis! Students come to either get specific help or to have
a place to do their homework. Either way, we welcome any student in Jr. High or High School who is struggling with math.
th
rd
“Winter” Session Part 2 will begin January 18 and go to the end of the 3 nine-weeks, which is March 18. “Spring”
st
Session will begin March 21 and go to the end of school. It will continue to be available on Mondays and Wednesdays in
Mrs. Van Hoose’s room (304) until 4:00 P.M. Mathletes will not be available on the following dates: Monday, January 18,
Wednesday, January 20, Monday, February 1, and Monday, February 15. We will also not have Mathletes if we cancel
school.
Is this your first time hearing about it? Here’s how it works! It is open to any Jr. High and High School student who needs
help with math. Students can come and go between the hours of 3:15-4 P.M. They can use it as a time to do their math
homework and ask questions or to get specific help. Anytime a student arrives and leaves, he/she will need to sign in and
out. I will provide a snack to those who stay and work. There will be up to four NHS members available to ask for help
first. If all members are taken or a member isn’t sure how to answer a question or help the student, I will assist.
My hope for AHS Mathletes was for students to find the program helpful, math grades improve, students find confidence
in their math skills, and for it to be offered all school year. Mathletes has accomplished all four of these goals, and my new
hope is for it to continue for years to come! Look for another article at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.
For the parents who have asked in the past or might ask in the future, “What can I do to help my child in math because I
can’t help them?” AHS Mathletes is your answer! Please encourage your child to visit us so that we can get him or her the
help he or she needs!
I appreciate your time!  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via e-mail at
[email protected] or by phone at (419)365-5122 ext. 344.

Senior of the Month Program
Amanda Miller
December Senior of the Month-Abbey Dempster
The Academic Alliance is sponsoring our new "Senior of the Month" program. Each
month the staff will vote for a senior who demonstrates the following criteria: scholarship
(including improvement/ outstanding efforts), leadership, citizenship, and involvement in
school/community activities. Chosen seniors will select a $25 gift card of their choice
from the Academic Alliance. A biography and pictures of the senior will be placed in the
display case by the high school office.
In May, these seniors will be interviewed by a committee of teachers and Academic
Alliance members (who do not have a senior child). Based on the interviews, one
senior will be chosen as "Senior of the Year." This senior will receive a gift
card/monetary award up to $250 (based on available funds). Depending on his/her
postsecondary goals, the award must be used for the purchasing of college textbooks or
materials necessary for enriching his/her future career.
Abbey has been selected as our December Senior of the Month! It is very fitting as she
cherishes the holiday time she spends with her family! She is also famous for her Merry
Molecule jingle! Yum Yum…
Abbey is the daughter of Thad and Jennifer Dempster and an older sister to Kelsey.
Some of Abbey’s fondest childhood memories come from when she lived in the country.
She enjoyed playing on her swing set, swimming, and exploring during the summer months. She referred to it as a time of
“sweet bliss.” 
While at Arlington, she has played volleyball, and been a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. She
also participates in Campus Life and an all girls bible study group. She has had a great high school experience and has
made many great memories with her friends.
In Abbey’s spare time she likes to delve into a good book. She mentioned how she could not be any happier then when
she gets lost in a book. She also finds time to tutor and volunteer at the recycling center. Abbey shows her love of children
by working in the church nursery and being a leader at Vacation Bible School. She particularly enjoys getting crafty and
creative with the kiddos.
As a senior, she is looking forward to her upcoming trips. In January, she will be taking a mission trip to Haiti. Then in
March, she will visit the big NYC with her classmates. Abbey is excited to “experience the world outside of Ohio.”
Abbey is considering attending the University of Findlay next year. She has not made a final decision in regards to what
she would like to study. However, she is considering going into early childhood education or possibly accounting.
What the teachers have to say about Abbey:

Abbey is extremely mature, independent, and lives a Christian lifestyle.

She is very personable, creative, and has a great sense of humor.

Abbey is caring, kind, thinks of others, helps out, works hard, and is a positive role model!

Abbey is consistently at the top of her class in leadership and academics.

I enjoy the positive attitude and smile she brings to class!

There will be no school for students on Monday, January 18 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
NO SCHOOL MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15
There will be no school for students on Monday, February 15 in observance of Presidents Day.
SPRING BREAK AND FAMILY VACATIONS
Our spring break for this school year is scheduled for Thursday, March 24 through Monday, March 28. Students return to
school on Tuesday, March 29. If you are planning a trip or family vacation this spring, the school’s spring break would
allow this without the children missing any school.
WINTER WEATHER APPAREL
Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for our cold winter days. Outdoor recess requires hats, gloves, and
coats. If there is snow on the ground, students need boots to play off the pavement. When the temperature remains
above 20 degrees, we will plan to go outdoors for recess.
DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS INFO AVAILABLE VIA TEXTS/EMAILS
 The weather delay/cancellation information is broadcast on the local radio stations.
 Another great option is to sign up for TEXT ALERTS OR EMAILS at www.WFIN.COM or
www.WKXA.COM.

Elementary Guidance
Happy New year! I hope you were able to enjoy a relaxing holiday break with your friends and family! In classroom
guidance in January we will learn about Habit #3: Put First Things First. Simply put, students are learning to do what
needs to be done first, before they do non-important things. We have talked a lot about priorities, what our daily schedule
says about our life, and what is truly important in their lives. For younger students we have been focusing on doing all our
7
school work before we play, or watch TV. With older students our focus has been on their daily schedule, and prioritizing
important tasks, then adding in less important things in their day.
Dinosaur School started this week for our preschool-2nd graders. Dinosaur School is an interactive school based
program that Family Resource Center puts offers to all the schools in Hancock County. Dinosaur School lasts eleven
weeks, and our instructor visits the classrooms on Wednesday's. Students will be learning about following directions,
social skills, how to be a good friend, and how to be the best person they can be. They also meet different puppets that
help teach the lesson alongside the instructor. A letter explaining what your student learned about and an activity sheet
will be sent home each week after Dinosaur School.
