2012 Club Championships
New Bridge on 7th Blue Course
sponsored by Larry Laffan
Gavin O’Connor won the Gibney’s sponsored
2012 Club Championships (Tom Craddock
Trophy) in a very exciting finish, narrowly
beating his brother Paul by a single stroke.
This is Gavin’s fourth Club Championship
victory in the last seven years, a great
achievement from one of our top
golfing stars.
Paddy Canning wins the
Paddy Caul Plate
Paddy Canning won the Paddy Caul Plate,
also sponsored by Gibney’s, with an
exceptional 6 shot winning margin.
The New Bridge on the 7 th hole on the
Blue course sponsored by Mr. Larry Laffan
was opened on the 21st April 12. Harry Smith
cut the ribbon and wished good health to
all who cross her. Our sincere thanks to Larry
Laffan for this magnificent new foot bridge
and to Colm Murphy and Martin Dunne for
all their hard work erecting it.
Fred Moran,
Captain.

COURSE REPORT

The warm dry weather during the month of March was
of great benefit to the golf course with the colder
wetter conditions in April and May only proving to be a
minor set- back. Most of the winter work programme
is now complete.
An application of controlled slow release fertiliser has
been applied to the fairways and this will be followed by
mowers being set to summer cutting height.
The Spring/Summer programme of foliar feeding, light
top dressing and pencil tining of greens has commenced
and will be repeated every 21 days until late Autumn
when hollow coring will take place.
The new flags with different colours to pinpoint the
position of the hole on the greens are as follows:
• Red – front
• Yellow – centre
• Blue – back
Two new portable course toilets are now located close
to the Yellow 7th and Blue 5th Tee Box. Locations will be
trialled initially and fence panels used to disguise
their positions at a later stage.
The greens and the course in general are in wonderful
condition due to the continued dedication of Colm and
his staff.
Divot mix bags are now available at the first tees and
courtyard. The use of divot mix really helps the ongoing
maintenance of the course so please continue the
good work.
The new Ladies tee on the 8th Red with its carpeted steps
is receiving very positive comments from the members
along with the first tee on the Yellow Course.
It is proposed to develop a wild flower area in part of the
deep rough to the left of the 5th Blue tee to help increase
the population of pollinating insects. The selected portion
of ground will not affect play on the 8th Blue hole. It will
take 2 years for full establishment of the site.
New steps to Ladies 8th Tee box Red Course.

Art classes and lectures will commence in September
2012. The annual Art Exhibition will take place from
9th to 11th November this year.
Anyone interested in joining the Art Club should
contact Anne Feeney, Chairperson, Ann Roche,
Honorary Treasurer on 8460654 or Ann O’Sullivan,
Honorary Secretary on 8461664.
The Ladies are still enjoying their Tuesday night poker
and would welcome new players. All you have to do is
just turn up at 8.00 pm on any Tuesday. Mixed Poker
will resume again in October 12 on Thursday evenings
and everyone is welcome.

The Easter Dinner, AGM and Presentation of Prizes
were held on Monday 2nd April. It was a most
enjoyable evening. Elizabeth O’Brien is the new

Elizabeth on her appointment and wish her well for
the year ahead.

Singer & Choir
The Malahide Golf Club Singers held a charity night
for the very deserving Hospice on Friday 18th May.
A huge number of members turned up to witness an
excellent evening of entertainment with Aonghus
McAnally acting as Master of Ceremonies. Aonghus
did a remarkable job on the night performing a few
songs himself but it was his wit throughout the night
that made for so much fun for everyone. The Choir
sang a medley of tunes from ‘Modern Favourites’ to a ‘
Tribute to Broadway and beyond’.
There were some great individual and duet performances.
The club is blessed to have such a wonderful Musical
Director in Jenny McCabe and her accompanist Carl
Banks. Jenny’s individual performance alone was
nothing short of superb. The night ended in the early
hours of the morning with a singsong at the bar,
which was the icing on the cake on a wonderful night.

Unfortunately Malahide failed to qualify for the
semi-finals of the North Dublin Golf Clubs Snooker
League by a single point. These semis were contested
by St. Anne’s, who beat Donabate on a 3-2 score line
and Clontarf who defeated Forrest Little 3-0. In the
final St. Anne’s produced a shock result when they
beat the heavily fancied Clontarf by 3 frames to 1
to win the tournament for the first time in the Club’s
history. Malahide would really welcome new blood to
our snooker team and, with such a large membership,
there must be some hidden talent within our ranks.
If anyone is interested in becoming involved and is
free on Monday nights, please contact Tommy Rusk
on 085-1740777 or Alan Reilly on 087-2346059.

Alison Taylor sets
a New Ladies’ Course Record
Congratulations to Alison Taylor who has set a New
Ladies’ Course Record with her Gross score of 72
(Net 70 playing off Handicap of 2) in the May Medal
Competition on Tuesday 22nd May 12. The S.S.S.
was 74, the C.S.S. was 74, Par 74.
Alison has held the Ladies’ Course record since
July 2003 when she won Lady Captain’s Philomena
Moore’s prize.
Well done Alison on this New Course Record.

‘’THE CHIP SHOT’’

Club of choice today
is a pitching wedge.
2
I have gone down
the grip of the club to
give me more control
of my swing.
5
As you can see,
the shot we are
facing here is just
off the green with
about half rough,
half green to carry.
3
My feet are close
together with the
ball played opposite
my back foot.
My hands are forward
of the ball with
70% of my weight
on my left foot.
6
Here, I am pointing
to the spot where
I want to land the
ball on the green.
Malahide Golf Club Newsletter - Page 4
I have taken the club
back to about an 8
o’clock position and it
is very important not
to break your wrist.

‘’THE PITCH SHOT’’

1
I have followed
through and you will
notice my left arm
is straight along with
the shaft of the club.
My hands are
slightly down the
grip of the club.
2
8
This unfortunately
is a very common
position, the wrist
folded leading to
a poor strike.
This shot is a 40 yard
pitch shot. Again I
am using a pitching
wedge. The ball is
played towards the
centre of my stance,
which is a slightly
wider stance. The
hands are only slightly
forward of the ball.
3
I have swung the club
back to a 9 o’clock
position. Left arm is
parallel to the ground,
head of club pointing
towards the sky.
My head has
remained still.
9
A successful shot.
4
Most important is
to follow through.
My weight has
shifted to the left
foot, my chest is
turned towards the
target with the club
following through to
a 3 o’clock position.

GOLF RULES
The Rules regarding
Distance Measuring
Devices by the Royal
and Ancient
From the days when selecting a club
was done by “eye”, we have progressed
through yardage books, a development
often attributed to Jack Nicklaus,
distance markers at the sides of fairways
and distances on sprinkler heads,
to a point where electronic distancemeasuring devices, have become quite
common in certain areas of the world.
Q. Can I use a distance measuring
device in a competition?
Q. What kind of distance measuring
devices are allowed by Local Rule?
A. The use of distance measuring
devices during a stipulated round
remains contrary to the Rules of Golf
– the penalty being disqualification
under Rule 14-3 (Artificial Devices,
Unusual Equipment and Unusual Use
of Equipment). However, since January
2006, a Committee can permit the use
of some such devices via a Local Rule.
A. GPS, laser, any really; however,
it is important that the device only
measures distance. The use of a
distance-measuring device that is
designed to gauge or measure other
conditions that might affect a player’s
play, like gradient, wind speed
or temperature, is not permitted,
regardless of whether such an

CAN I USE MY DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICE (DMD)?
Rule 14-3 prohibits the use of DMDs. However, a Committee or Golf Club may introduce a Local Rule permitting the use
of devices which are capable of measuring distance, and distance only. The use of any DMD (a) when the Local Rule is not in
place, or (b) which is capable of measuring conditions or providing information that might assist the player in his play other
than distance, would be a breach of Rule 14-3, the penalty for which is disqualification.
This flowchart is designed to help golfers and/or Officials determine the status of a particular device for use as a DMD –
when the Local Rule is in place.

In November 2009, The R&A and
the USGA issued a ‘Joint Statement’

to these devices. To see the full
joint Statement, please visit the

Version 1.2
March 2012
**NB: Accessing other information or measurement tools via an internet browser may breach Rule 14-3
e.g. accessing the current wind and temperature conditions at the location being played. Moreover, the use of a multifunctional device for other reasons, e.g. watching or listening to a broadcast of the competition being played, may be a
breach of the Rules (see Decision 14-3/16 and 14-3/17 for details)

additional function is used or not, and
even if that function is disabled.
To help golfers and/or officials to
determine the status of a particular
device, The R&A has produced a
flowchart explaining what is allowed
when the Local Rule is in place
(see opposite page).
Q. What about multi-functional
devices, such as a mobile phone, with
a distance measuring application?
If, during a stipulated round, a player
uses a distance-measuring device
that is designed to gauge or measure
other conditions that might affect
his play (e.g., gradient, wind speed,
temperature, etc.), the player is in
breach of Rule 14-3, for which the
penalty is disqualification, regardless
of whether any such additional function
is actually used.”
A. On the course, subject to any club or
course regulations, a multi-functional
device may be used to phone, text or
email – provided the purpose is not
a breach of the Rules, e.g. you are not
asking for advice.
Q. What should the Local Rule
permitting distance measuring
devices say?
A. The wording of the recommended
Local Rule (Appendix I, Part B, 9) reads
as follows:
“Distance-Measuring Devices:
[Specify as appropriate, e.g., In this
competition, or For all play at this
course, etc.], a player may obtain
distance information by using a
device that measures distance only.
Q. If a Club has in place the Local
Rule permitting distance measuring
devices and an external body,
the national golf association, for
example, is running an event there,
does that mean that distance
measuring devices are automatically
allowed in that
national event?
A. No. It is the
responsibility of
the national golf
association to
establish its own
Local Rules for the
event. Those Local
Rules supersede
what the Club has
in place on a day
to day basis.
When an application that measures
distance has been downloaded to
the device, the application must be
restricted to providing only distance
information in order to conform to
the Local Rule. If there are any other
features or applications on the phone
that gauge or measure other conditions
that might affect a player’s play, such
as a temperature gauge, compass or
anemometer, this would render the
device non-conforming regardless
of whether these other features or
applications are used or not.
The flowchart referred to above also
covers the use of multi-functional
devices and should be of assistance
determining whether a certain device
is permissible or not.
and Committees to decide what is
right for them, their competitions and
their players.
Q. Does the R&A
permit distance
measuring
devices at events
like The Open
Championship
or The Amateur
Championship?
Q. Why not simply allow distance
measuring devices without the need
for a Local Rule?
A. The advent of distance-measuring
devices and their use in the game
divides opinion at many levels. Many
golfers are fans of these devices as they
feel it puts them on a level footing with
tournament professionals who have
caddies providing distance information,
whilst others will argue that there is
no place for such technology in the
game. As such, it was, and remains,
appropriate to allow individual clubs
Malahide Golf Club Newsletter - Page 7
A. No, it doesn’t,
but ultimately it is
for each individual
Committee to decide whether it wants
to allow the use of such devices for
play on its course or in certain of its
competitions. In the absence of a Local
Rule, the use of such a device is contrary
to the Rules of Golf, so always check the
Local Rules!
Q. If the Local Rule for distance
measuring devices is in place,
may players share a distance
measuring device?
A.. Yes…although it is important that
players sharing devices do not unduly
delay play.

Brian McCann wins
Junior Scratch Cup in
Hollywood Lakes
Brian McCann won the Hollywood
Lakes Junior Scratch Cup on Saturday
5th May 2012. His 78 was one of only
three scores in the 70’s on what was
a very testing day in Ballyboughal.
Many congratulations to Brian on an
excellent victory.
New Score Cards
New scorecards have been
introduced into Malahide Golf Club.
The main changes are as follows:-
MGC Lady Captains had a fantastic day at The North Dublin Lady Captain’s
Golfing Ass. Day in Rush on the 27th April 12. Congratulations to Anne
Howlett, the overall prize winner and recipient of the Maureen Mc Kenna
Trophy, presented by Mary Mc Kenna, MBE. MGC also won the team Trophy
and Pennant awarded for the three best club scores from Anne Howlett,
Pauline Duddy and Mary Hughes. A very rewarding day for Malahide
with Noreen Farrell winning the prize for the longest drive. Well done
Lady Captains, a first pennant for 2012 and hopefully more.
Philip Walton Pro-Am
We would like to thank those of you who participated last year and we are
delighted to advise you that Malahide Golf Club will again be hosting the
Philip Walton Pro-Am this year, the total proceeds of which will be donated
to St. Francis Hospice, Raheny.
Last year with your generosity and support the Pro-Am Committee donated
a massive €12,000 to the Hospice. This is a charity that touches everyone
and we trust that with your valued support we can match or even exceed last
year’s achievements.
Once again Philip Walton has kindly endorsed the event and your
participation will give you the opportunity to play with Ireland’s leading
Professional Golfers.
The format for the day will be a team event with one Professional and three
Amateurs per team. A separate individual prize for the winning Professionals
is also included in the event.
a)Revisions to indices in line with
the difficulty of each hole.
The date for your diary is Friday 8th June and we would be delighted if you
would again enter a Team (€600), or why not get together with a couple of
friends and enter a team between you.
b)Guide to pin positions on greens,
details of which are outlined
separately in the Magazine and
Your fee covers breakfast or light lunch on arrival, dinner will be served after
golf and in the evening there will be entertainment and presentation of
prizes. The first 15 teams to enter will have a choice of Tee Time (am or pm).
c)Separate indices for Match-play
competitions in the interest
of fairness.
We are looking forward to seeing you on Friday 8th June. If you are interested
in entering a team, please contact the office or any of the Pro Am Committee,

Juvenile News
We had two Juvenile competitions
over the Easter periods, which were
both well attended, and we would
ask all Juveniles to participate in the
upcoming competitions in June,
July and August. The next Juvenile
competition is on Thursday the 7th
of June 2012. We also have some
Adult/Juvenile competitions coming
up over the summer months, the
next of these which takes place on
Sunday the 27th May. All Juveniles
who have yet to obtain a handicap
are reminded to have their 3 cards
completed and submitted by the end
of June.
Mary Rock who looked after the
check-in and the golf games on the
practice ground with our new Cadets,
some of who are as young as eight
years of age, a great sign for
the future of Malahide Golf Club.
We would also like to mention one of
our Juveniles, Andrew Conlon, who
attends Malahide Community School.
Andrew was part of the school team
that won the All Ireland Schools
Match play Championships in April.
He was also part of the team that
won the Leinster Schools Four ball
competition. Well-done to Andrew
on these wonderful achievements.
Boys Teams
Malahide hosted the Andy Desmond
Trophy at Easter but, unfortunately,
we were beaten at the first round stage.
On 13th of April we participated in the
qualifying round of the Fred Daly
Trophy in the Island Golf Club finishing
3rd on the day but, unfortunately,
only 2 teams qualified for the next
stages. However, we did have some
notable performances with Philip Smith
shooting 73 Gross, Conor Sutton 74
Gross and Andrew Conlon 77 Gross
with all three were in the top 10 scores
of the day. The Juvenile Committee
would like to thank Paul, Christian,
and Fergal Hickey for all their hard
work this year in managing the Fred
Daly team. The next Juvenile team
in action will be our under 15s on
the 24th of May when they take
on Portmarnock in Portmarnock.
The very best of luck to the team
under the new management team
of Colin Shiels and Leo Connolly.
The Cadet Monday nights started on
the 14th of May with a great turnout
of over 30 in attendance on the night.
Many thanks to Gerry Purcell and

which we know will be a great success.

This year Malahide Golf Club has been
fortunate to have been able to accept
more Cadets into our Membership.
As part of the Cadet programme set up
by the Juvenile Committee this year,
all Cadets had to attend a basic 2 or 3
day course with Pro John Murray and
his team this Easter.
Great fun was had by all and many
a new talent was spotted. The new
Cadet were given new Red caps with
the Club Logo and Cadet markings
on them. This made them easier to
spot and safer for our Cadets.
Coaching
The Juvenile Boys Coaching
programme is now up and running
under the guidance of our PGA
Professional, John Murray. The first
session took place on Monday 30th
of April and will be followed by two
more sessions in May and June.
