10 Reasons to Send your Kids to Camp!
Summer camps are fun. But they are also important. Here are 10 reasons why
every child should go to camp...
1. Exposure to Diversity
Kids learn that the world is a big place with lots of people, who might do things differently
than they're used to. That includes other kids from all over the country and beyond!
2. Self-Esteem Boost
When kids are at camp, they don't have mom and dad there to help them. They have to
put themselves out there. Learning how to canoe or developing archery skills also makes
a child realize how capable he or she is to learn and grow.
3. Attune to Nature
Camp gets kids outdoors and enjoying nature. In today’s world, it's a need for kids that
probably doesn't get met. Camp has become important in filling gaps in modern kids' lives.
4. Develops Independence
Camp is a great way to encourage self-development and independence. Kids that are a
little too attached to mom and dad can learn how to trust themselves to make decisions
and take care of themselves.
5. Instills Leadership Skills
Camps allow kids to make choices and choose their summer projects. Camps are natural
leadership training places.
6. Gives Wonderful Memories
Camp builds good memories for the future. It's a time of new discoveries that will stay with
children long into adulthood.
7. Helps Make Friends
Kids can become lifelong friends with people that don't necessarily live right next door to
them. Navigating and building these friendships over the Summer can teach children how
to be more socially confident; something they can take back to school with them in the
Fall.
8. Gets Them Active
Camp helps kids learn how to be kids again. In this technology-filled world, camps cut
back on distractions. Kids can get up and get moving!
9. Develop Interests
Camps are a nurturing environment for a child to explore activities and programs that
could turn into lifelong passions. There are so many fun activities for kids to discover.
10. Keeps Kids Busy Over the Summer
Parents have to work so camp becomes a very practical option for most. When school lets
out, kids have to go somewhere to spend their time. But camp isn't just a “parking spot” for
kids. It also offers fun, excitement, and lessons that last!

Is your Child Ready for Overnight Camp?
You’ve collected the brochures and visited the web sites. You may even have
visited a camp or two. Your calendar is marked off for ‘Summer camp.’ But how
do you know if your child is ready for overnight camp?
Every child is unique so there is no magic answer. There are however some tried
and true signs of readiness. If you’re thinking about a sleep-away camp for your
child, ask yourself the following:
1. Is your child interested in and asking about camp?
If your child is already asking about going away to camp, take it as a good sign. Children
who are self-motivated and interested in attending camp have a greater chance of
enjoying camp once they arrive.
2. Can your child manage personal care needs and the tasks of daily living without
parents around?
Overnight camp involves independent living. Can your child get dressed for school without
your help? Fix a snack? Take a shower? Remember to brush their teeth? If so, they
should be fine. Remember there will be great camp counselors to care for them but your
child will generally be expected to take care of themselves and follow schedules and
routines without close supervision.
3. How long has your child been away overnight without you and was it a positive
experience?
If your child loves slumber parties (at friends’ houses) transitioning to sleep-away camp
may be a breeze. And if an overnight without you has never worked, do some trial runs
before registering your child for camp.
4. Does your child follow and listen to instructions?
If your child is well-behaved in school, with coaches and other adults in positions of
authority, they should do fine at camp.
5. Is your child willing to try new things?
Summer camp is all about adventures! Each day is filled with new people to meet, new
surroundings, and new activities to try. For kids willing to give it a go, there’s no better
place to spread their wings than Summer camp. If you child is the type of person who
thrives in new situations and makes friends easily, chances are he/she will have no trouble
at camp!
Toronto4Kids 2014 Summer Camp Guide | 28
Taming Summer Camp Anxiety
Is your child anxious about the attending camp this Summer? Camp should be a
fun and thrilling experience for all kids. Before signing up for any camp or an
away-from-home activity, talk to your child about it. Ask them how they are
feeling about these plans. Above all, be sure to acknowledge your child’s feelings
as ‘real.’ You may not believe there’s any reason for to be upset, but remember
that feelings and fears are very real in your child's mind. Here are 10 tips to
diminish the anxiety of Summer camp:
1. Let your child ‘own’ the camp the experience. Involve them in choosing a Summer
camp, introduce them to the camp environment (arrange a visit), and familiarize them with
the camp activities so they know what to expect.
2. Help your child get excited about camp! Take them shopping for new gear and clothes,
and have them focus on the fun aspects about camp.
3. Stay calm and positive and avoid focusing on what makes your child anxious. Instead of
asking a leading question such as, “Are you nervous about meeting new friends?” ask
open-ended questions like, “How are you feeling about meeting new camping mates?”
4. Practice shorter separations. If your child is apprehensive about being away from you
and from home, it makes sense to work your way up to longer separations. Go through
“rehearsals” such as a shorter-term sleepover at Grandma’s or a friend’s house.
5. Don’t belittle their concerns or offer convincing reassurances. Avoid saying, “There’s
nothing to worry about!” or, “Everyone loves camp!” This may actually discourage your
child. Show that you have empathy and acknowledge his fears.
6. Don’t “hang around at the bus stop” on departure day. Keep goodbyes short, as
delaying just causes more mixed feelings. Or, don’t make a big deal of drop-off. If you get
emotional, your child is more likely to lose control too.
7. Make sure communication is easy and accessible. Pack envelopes and stamps, outline
a schedule for phone calls, emails, and skyping (if allowed and part of the camp’s routine).
Make sure your child understands how easy it will be to stay in touch.
8. Prepare for each letter or conversation so your child will come away focused on how
they are adjusting, rather than on how much they want to come home.
9. Try not to communicate your own anxiety. Your child can pick up on your feelings even
if you don’t verbalize them. What you want to share is your confidence in your child.
10. Let your child take a piece of “home” with them. Your child may be traveling miles
away, but there’s no reason why they need to leave home completely behind. Send
familiar objects with them, such as a favourite stuffed animal, toy, book, and a small
picture of the family. They'll feel less cut off from everything that’s familiar, and will
therefore be less likely to experience severe homesickness. It’s even better if they can go
to camp with a close friend.
