7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
MAY 8, 2016
MISSION STATEMENT
As Catholic Christians, we will live to serve God and each other. And do His
will as one family united in Faith. We will teach, serve, and be an example to the youth of
the parish that they will come to a full understanding of Christ and His plan for their lives.
We will nurture the gifts and talents of all parish members and use them wisely for the
glory of God. We will compassionately implement the Spiritual and Corporal works of
Mercy for those in our Parish, Diocese and throughout the world. Through the celebration
of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, we affirm our Communion with Christ and
each other. All are welcome.

Liturgical Reflection…
On this Seventh Sunday of Easter we look at the Spiritual Work of Mercy to forgive
injuries. A follower of Christ is called not only to forgive, but to forgive generously.
This act of mercy can be extremely challenging. Forgiveness is a divine gift rooted in the
mercy of God. From a human perspective forgiveness can sometimes be more than challenging. Hurt and anger sometimes lead to thoughts of revenge and hate. On the cross,
Jesus forgave his trespassers. To those who hurt us and offend us, we offer mercy. To
those who show no remorse or accept no responsibility for causing injury, we offer mercy. Many times we must turn to the Lord of mercy to forgive the injuries we ourselves
have caused. May the Easter Christ gift us with mercy to forgive those who cause hurt
and injury.
Be Merciful, Bill Huebsch, 2016 Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown

The first movie starts at 6:30PM - The Peanuts Movie released 2015. The second is the new Star Wars movie and it would start about 8:15. Come for one or come for both. Anyone can show up, kids can bring friends. With that said, before we finalize everything we need to get a count of who would be interested. Please reply to Dan via facebook, phone: 421-9754, or email [email protected]. These were Dan’s movie selec ons, but if there is a strong preference for another movie, please let him know. FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB
This is a topic that I would prefer not to discuss but I need to clarify what many
other parishes in our diocese are experiencing as well. Many parishioners have
decided not to contribute to the Annual Catholic Appeal because of the recent
scandal of the clerical sexual abuse of adolescents that has occurred over a period of many years in our diocesan Church, even making the national news. This
is shocking and certainly unacceptable behavior that should be condemned. The
problem, however, is that we cannot undo history but hopefully we can build a
brighter future and be a people of hope who walk in the light of our faith and restore our confidence in those who have been called to lead this diocesan church
in the present. I fully understand what is a natural response to such a crisis –
don’t give the diocese any money. Unfortunately, that is neither the reality nor
the solution/punishment that will make everything better.
We, as parish communities of faith, do not exist as independent entities. This is
a universal policy for all Catholic churches throughout the world. We are the
“Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown”. If we no longer meet our diocesan assessments as a parish, we will no longer exist as a parish family for very long either. Like it or not, we are intimately joined as one diocesan church, “for better
or for worse until death do us part.” Facing reality is not always an easy thing to
do. We, as the Church of Altoona-Johnstown, need to show the world that the
frailty of our humanity, that which we call “sin”, will not deter us from rising
from the ashes to become more vigilant, more dedicated disciples of the Lord,
and that we will be that City of Light and Hope even when the darkness seems to
engulf us. Retribution and revenge is not the answer to the problem at hand but
our joining together in prayer and the hope for healing for all those who have
been hurt, disillusioned, and angry might now direct their energies and efforts
into making things better for a world and our own diocesan Church family that
has already seen far too much pain.

Children's version of
Bible Stories
The Sunday school teacher was carefully explaining the story of Elijah
the Prophet and the false prophets of
Baal. She explained how Elijah built
the altar, put wood upon it, cut the
steer in pieces, and laid it upon the
altar. And then, Elijah commanded
the people of God to fill four barrels
of water and pour it over the altar. He had them do this four times.
"Now," said the teacher, "can anyone in the class tell me why the Lord
would have Elijah pour water over
the steer on the altar?"
A little girl in the back of the room
started waving her hand,
"I know! I know!" she said, "To
make the gravy!"

John 17:20-26
Jesus speaks of unity, not uniformity. With uniformity everything is the same. Unity requires
recognition and reconciliation of differences. How
do you reconcile differences in your home? Do
you listen respectfully or do you try to manipulate
or impose your opinion? The seeds of unity and
division are in every family. What we sow, we
reap. What is your family harvest?
