MISSION STATEMENT: Northampton Elementary School is dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing, and encouraging
environment and seeks to educate, challenge, and inspire students to become life-long learners and responsible citizens
through a balanced curriculum and the cooperative efforts of students, staff, parents, and community.
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
The year has just flown by. It is hard to believe that this is
the last Colt Capers of the school year! Our students have worked
very hard in April on the STAAR tests. Our preliminary fifth grade
STAAR scores in reading and math are in, and the first round looks
very good. We have improved over last year’s scores with the greatest improvement being in our commended performance. We improved 22% in reading commended and 14% in math commended.
The 5th grade students who failed the first round will be involved in
academic interventions and will re-test in mid May. We are confident that our third grade, fourth grade and second round of fifth
grade scores will be outstanding.
We have many exciting events scheduled for May and June
including our GT Showcase, Kindergarten Roundup, Dads and
Donuts, “AR Blue Day” for all students who earned at least 100 AR
points, field day, academic awards and our annual talent show.
Please check the calendar on the back for all the events! Also, please
visit our web page regularly for updates. The week of the 6 th
through 10th of May is designated as Staff Appreciation Week. We
truly appreciate our staff for all they do every day.
Our school supply package order forms for next year have
gone home and we will be pre-selling the packages until May 17th.
This is an easy way to make sure your child starts out with all the
supplies they need. When we return in the fall Meet the Teacher is
scheduled for Friday, August 23rd from 1-2 p.m. for grades PK-2;
and from 2-3 p.m. for grades, 3-5. We will be selling a limited number of school supply packages on that day.
We wish you a safe, fun filled, relaxing summer. Thank you
for all your support throughout the school year!
Your partner in education,
Evelyn Castillo

Summer is coming and this is a great time to spend
quality time with your child reading. Reading is the
foundation of success in school as well as in life. The
following are some parent-tested ideas on how to improve
children’s reading.
Read Aloud Strategies:
● Read stories you yourself enjoy. Your enthusiasm is catching.
● If your child interrupts with a lot of questions, answer them
right away. Also, ask your child questions as you read. This
helps to get and keep them thinking about what is being read.
● Don’t worry about reading a lot at one sitting. Your child
will remember 10 minutes of reading together far longer than 2
hours of television.
● Take charge as the parent. Have a set time when the TV will
be turned off regardless. If your child would like a story read in
that time that’s great, but if not that is okay too. It is important
to encourage the reading but also not to give your child the idea
that books are the reason he or she cannot watch TV.
Thinking about reading:
● Stop before the end of the story. Ask your child to predict
what she thinks may happen next.
● If you’re reading a poem, encourage your child to guess what
the next rhyming word may be.
● When the story is finished have your child give you or another family member a summary of the highlights of the story.
● After you finish a story, ask your child to think about how
the story relates to a personal experience he or she may have
had.
● Ask your child how he or she might have changed the story.
