Our Lady of Peace Retreat

Fall 2015 Newsletter
Be it done unto me according to thy word!
The Lord give you peace!
It is with great joy and humility that I share the good news of our
Sisters’ Profession of Vows here in Beaverton and in Hong Kong. Our
Community has been blessed this year with three Sisters who publicly
professed their consecration to God during this special year dedicated
to the Consecrated Life.
Two of our Sisters, Sister Mary (Hong Kong), and Sister Maria
Benedicta (Beaverton) professed their First Temporary Vows after
the completion of their initial formation. They will renew these vows
yearly for the next 5 years.
Sr. Mary, Hong Kong
Sister Mary, who professed her vows on March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, works with our infirmed
Sisters in Hong Kong, and is also studying Cantonese.
Sister Maria Benedicta is on her first mission in Richmond, BC, Canada, where she is involved in
parish ministry and visitation of the ill and homebound.
Our other Sister, Sister Agnes Clare (Beaverton) completed
her five years of Temporary profession and has professed her
Perpetual vows. (Archbishop Alexander Sample officiated at the
Mass for her and Sister Maria Benedicta on June 6th. This Mass
was held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Beaverton.)
Sister Agnes Clare assists at Our Lady of Peace Retreat as
Sacristan, Public Relations Representative and Retreat Leader
and is a skilled and accomplished seamstress for the Community.
Our Community is so thankful to God for the gift of these
three Sisters. Please pray for them
that they will persevere in their
commitment to the Consecrated
Life…and also remember to pray for
vocations to our Community. It is our
desire to serve wherever Our Blessed
Lord leads us.

n May 3, 2015,
Archbishop John
Vlazny blessed
the icon of St. Francis of
Assisi that was written
by Dr. Lynn BissonnettePitre in thanksgiving to
God for our Community’s
75th anniversary. After
the Mass, we processed
to the retreat hallway
where a special wall had
been prepared by Kathryn
Whitlock on which to hang
this lovely icon. Next to
the icon on the wall is the
Scripture quote from
St. Luke: “The Master said to the servant, ‘Go out into
the highways and hedges, and make them come in, so
that my house may be filled.’” This quote is from the
crest of Bishop Rafael Angelo Palazzi, our Founder.
Pictured is Dr. Lynn Bissonnette-Pitre praying before
the icon. It is traditional that the writer of the icon is the
first person to pray before it. When you come by the
retreat house, please take time to visit this beautiful icon
and say a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the many
blessings which He has showered upon our congregation
and ministry. Pax et Bonum.
ith the blessed assistance of Julie and Leroy
Nollette, who procured the pictures, and
Mona Moiso with others from Beaverton Hills
Assisted Living Residence who framed each one, we now
have pictures of the Saints who grace the rooms in the
back section of the retreat house (Rooms 42 – 52). You
will meet St. Sharbel, St. Gertrude, St. Juan Diego,
St. Katharine Drexel…and many more Saints blessing
the room that you might be occupying. Now all of our
retreat residence rooms are named for the Saints and
have their patron’s picture on the wall. The next time
you come on retreat, we invite you to arrive early so that
you may take a walk among the saints at Our Lady of
Peace Retreat.

Institute in Catholic Teaching
Institute Impressions - by Sister Louismarie
T
he July Institute in
Catholic Teaching took
place again this year at
Our Lady of Peace Retreat. The
three main speakers were: Father
John Horgan, lecturer, theologian
and pastor from Vancouver, BC;
Sister Mary Rose Chinn, Director
of Faith Formation and Religious
Education in Ventura, California,
and a member of the Handmaids of the Triune God; and lay –
apologist and lecturer, Trent Horn from Catholic Answers in
San Diego, California.
2015 Institute Residents
Father Horgan spoke on the nuptial character of Scripture
and how it shows forth God’s desire throughout history to
unite Himself in an intimate,
loving union with all mankind
in this life, culminating for
all eternity in heaven. He
brought out several examples in
Scripture that use this nuptial
imagery, such as: how God
wooed the people of Israel into
a covenantal relationship with
Himself; how the breaking of
Fr. Horgan with Thomas DiNovo
that relationship was likened
to adultery; how through the prophets, particularly John
the Baptist, God constantly sought to restore those broken
relationships and eventually established a new covenant when
sins will be forgiven – this New Covenant is through Jesus
Christ, the Bridegroom. Father Horgan’s talks were replete
with numerous examples of this marital imagery that brought
the Scriptures alive. His explanations helped us to see beyond
the eternal aspects of some Jewish customs, that they could be
better seen in light of this marital imagery.
primarily for Catholics: the fallen away, the uninstructed or
confused. Sister Mary Rose taught us that those who “echo”
their faith are catechists. “Echoing” the Faith consists in
sharing with others one’s personal experiences and living them
out. She emphasized that we are all to be catechists in virtue
of our Baptism, regardless of whether we consider ourselves
teachers. Sister clarified the distinction between catechists and
teachers: the Church is the teacher; those echoing the Faith
are catechists. There might be some apprehension by many
Catholics who
fear to share
our Faith
with others.
However,
Sister stressed
that we have
the Divine
Indwelling
to help us, and she emphasized the importance of availing
ourselves of, and knowing how, the Sacraments help equip
us as disciples of Jesus Christ. Her explanations and her
contagious zeal gave a wonderful Catholic witness. It was
evident that Sister Mary Rose practiced what she preached.
Sister Mary Rose Chinn, in her
down-to-earth and easy style,
spoke about how a parish is to
be a family, with each family
member taking responsibility
first for his own conversion and
holiness, and then sharing his
experiences in living it out with
others. She shared how the New
Evangelization is meant not
Presenter, Sr. Mary Rose Chinn only for non-Catholics, but is
Trent Horn presented several talks on how to respond
to, or enter into, a beneficial dialog with inquirers and/
or opponents of the Catholic position on moral issues. His
calm and dignified delivery was a good example in itself.
He shared through stories and personal examples skills of
communication that help when discussing and upholding
our Catholic position. Some of these skills include asking
questions that are factual, validating the response when one

is able to, and when needed, supplying answers on a
more secular, philosophical, or even scientific level.
Using this approach opens the way more easily to
respectful dialog, whereas unleashing a deluge of
strictly religious principles might put the hearer on
the defensive with nothing positive achieved. In all
of the moral issues that Trent covered, he stressed
that the dignity of the person must be upheld. His
knowledge and ability to explain the Faith he loves
was very impressive.
The presentations during the entire week reminded
me of the passages in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 12,
about the variety of gifts that are meant to be shared
in order to build up the Mystical Body of Christ. The
three speakers complemented one another so well that
it was easy to see how the Holy Spirit uses diversity
among His people to make a wonderful whole!

St. Pius X Women’s Club
Award Presentation
n early May we had the pleasure of welcoming from St. Pius X
Women’s Club: Colleen Lucas, President, Jan Duggan, Vice
President and Sun Kwon, Historian. The three ladies came to
the retreat house to present to Sr. Guadalupe, our local Superior,
and several sisters in the Community, a check in the amount of
$1,000. Earlier in the year Jan Duggan had assessed our needs
while on a retreat here at Our Lady of Peace, and then submitted
our name for consideration for a special grant. Every year the
St. Pius X Women’s Club distributes monies raised from their
Holiday Bazaar to a number of non-profit organizations that meet
certain criteria. This year there were 11 recipients. We express
our heartfelt thanks for this generous gift. We will be putting the
money to good use, considering our long list of facility needs!

Remodeling Goals and Woes
n response to the many inquiries about our Chapel Renovation
Project, we’d like to give you an update. As many of you are
aware, we’ve been raising funds to honor and glorify God with
the remodeling of our Retreat House Chapel. Through the generosity of
many kind donors, we’ve received to date $85,212.30 in contributions
toward our goal of $250,000.00. May God bless you for your fantastic
support!
At this time we’d also like to share with you some new developments
which have required our prayerful discernment. As we began work
on the plans for our new Chapel, we became more aware of pressing
needs in other areas of the Retreat House. Postponed maintenance on
plumbing, electrical units and roofing all need major attention. We have
also identified a need to have more retreat rooms available since we must often turn away groups for lack of space. We’ve
formed a building committee to address these needs and are working with an architect to explore possibilities for the entire
facility. There are some very exciting ideas emerging and we’ll be sharing them with you in the future.
Please pray for the Sisters and our advisers as we seek to retain the beauty of what is already here at Our Lady of Peace
while developing creative responses to current needs, so that we can continue our vital ministry of providing a place for all
to “rekindle their spirit” for years to come.

we believe because of so
many prayers, there were a
few sprinkles in the morning
followed by a cloud cover
that allowed for a truly enjoyable afternoon. This was our
best year ever bringing in a total of $28,569.66. We served
over 900 meals, the pulled pork seemed to be the favorite this
year. We owe a big “Thank You” to the Knights of Columbus
and our many other wonderful volunteers and all who
attended, making the day a success! We will remember all of
you in our prayers — May God bless you and your families.
well-kept secret is Sr. Mary Peter’s garden
tucked behind one of the outbuildings by the
Convent. She has been planting and harvesting
from her prolific garden all summer while retreatants
and staff enjoy fresh kale, tomatoes, cucumbers,
berries and even grapes. In an adjoining plot, Sr. Maria
Gabriel has been sowing, watering and fertilizing the
strawberries, zinnias and sunflowers. Sister’s zinnias
(some rare varieties included) provide color at the
retreatant tables in the dining room and decoration for
the Convent Chapel.

Franciscan Fioretti
Mary: The SS Santa Maria
Peter Howard, contributor to Catholic Spiritual Direction,
wrote an inspiring article we would like to share with you. Too
long to include in its entirety, below are some excerpts.
Mary, Ark of Salvation—Last Call! All Aboard!
G
against evil. Those aboard the ark of Mary (Her
Immaculate Heart) will find that, like a heart, they
are being pumped out on a mission to heal the body
(the Church and the world) while being drawn back
in at the same time. The Christian life and mission is
one that flows in and out of the Immaculate Heart of
Mary, like fighter pilots that fly out on missions with
ample payload and fuel to accomplish the mission
and return back to the carrier. It’s not a perfect
analogy, but one that, I believe, works and is fitting
for our times: the SS Santa Maria!
od is
announcing
anew that
the world needs to
enter a new ark as
the world enters
deeper and deeper
into darkness and
sin, similar to the
movie character, Evan Baxter, the ark in which we
are being asked to enter is more than one made of
gopher wood. The ark of salvation for the world
today is not a physical boat but a spiritual one—it
resides in a person, a heart, an Immaculate Heart...
of Mary. We don’t have to build this ark as Noah did
the first time. This ark has been built for us by God,
himself and therefore, is big enough for all to enter,
if we only heed His Divine call. And His call comes
through the one who is the ark, Mary! [at Fatima
Mary issued a warning to mankind and a remedy.
The warning of the spread of Communism and the
remedy, consecration to her Immaculate Heart, so
that souls would be saved and there would be peace].
There it is...as in Noah’s time, when only those who
found refuge in the ark were saved and given a new
springtime to begin their lives anew after the flood
waters receded, so in this age of Mary, the new ark
of salvation, will those who want to survive the
storm, the Fall and the Winter which will precede
the promised new springtime, find their refuge in
her Immaculate Heart through the Rosary and
consecration to her Immaculate Heart...Mary as the
ark of salvation, is different from the ark of Noah not
only in that it is one created by the hands of God, but
the ark of Mary has an offensive purpose as much as
it has a defensive one.
Considering what is a stake in the world today, will
you be the humble and obedient Noah who led his
family to the true “ark of salvation” or will you be
like those who laughed at Noah and continued living
a life tolerant of evil, who later found the ark of Noah
closed and sealed when the flood waters came? One
way we can summarize the significance of Mary’s
visitations the last 200 years is that Mary has come
to tell us: “Last call to board the ark of salvation!”
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says
to the churches (Rev 2:29). How do we hear? By
praying...and often.
Parents, are you leading your family to the ark of
salvation during these times? If not, start with the
beautiful prayer of consecration to Mary written by
St. Maximillian Kolbe.
The ark of Mary is more similar to our modern
day aircraft carrier, which is a floating city from
which special operations are conducted to liberate
the oppressed and defend against the enemy. She
protects those on board, but she also prepares them
for spiritual war—because we are in a serious war

Prayer of St. Maximillian Maria Kolbe, OFM Conv.
O Immaculata, Queen of Heaven and earth, refuge of sinners and our most loving
Mother, God has willed to entrust the entire order of mercy to thee. I, N___, a repentant
sinner, cast myself at thy feet humbly imploring thee to take me with all that I am and
have, wholly to thyself as thy possession and property. Please make of me, of all my
powers of soul and body, of my whole life, death and eternity, whatever most pleases
thee. If it pleases thee, use all that I am and have without reserve, wholly to accomplish
what was said of thee: “She will crush your head,” and, “Thou alone have destroyed all
heresies in the whole world.”
Let me be a fit instrument in thine Immaculate and merciful hands for introducing and
increasing the maximum in all the many strayed and indifferent souls, and thus help
extend as far as possible the blessed Kingdom of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. For
wherever thou enters, one obtains the grace of conversion and growth in holiness, since
it is through thy hands that all graces come to us from the most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
V. Allow me to praise thee O Sacred Virgin.
R. Give me strength against thy enemies.

Convent News - Summer Transitions
O
ur recently, first-professed Sister Maria Benedicta has been “missioned” to Richmond, BC,
Canada, where she joins Sr. Maureen Theresa and Sr. Mary John Paul at St. Paul Catholic
Church. The three sisters make their home in the parish convent and from there assist in the
RCIA Program, Confirmation and First Communion Classes in addition to visiting the homebound
and those in the hospital. Here in Beaverton we will miss Sr. Maria Benedicta and her handcrafted
rosaries and rag dolls (sold in the gift shop) and perhaps even more her made-from-scratch streusel
cake and spätzle (recipes from her early years in Germany).
S
ister Joanne Vaetz returned to the Beaverton Convent after a three-year
sojourn at St. Clare’s Retreat in Soquel, California, where she helped in the
retreat ministry. Sister will be answering phones part time in the retreat
office (Thank you, Sister Joanne!) and assisting in the kitchen and setting tables
in the convent dining rooms. We are glad to have our cheery, ever-honest Sister
back among us.
S
ister Margaret Tan arrived in Beaverton last spring where she now also resides in the Convent
Infirmary. She has been in the Community since 1952. She had spent many years here in
Beaverton and also at St. Clare’s retreat in Soquel where she was one of the “pioneers” there
when the retreat house opened its doors. She is remembered by many from the “old days” and has
maintained friendships with retreatants at St. Clare’s from the early 50s.

of the Immaculate Heart
Requiescant in Pace
1924 ~ 2015
S
ister Angela Lee arrived last winter
from the Convent in Hong Kong to
take up residency in the infirmary.
Sister had been diagnosed with cancer,
and she passed into eternal life this past
June. We were all edified by her patience
and sweetness as she prepared for death.
Her services were held at the retreat house
Chapel with interment in the Franciscan
Missionary Sisters’ plot at Calvary
Cemetery in Portland.
Sister Angela Lee joined the Community in
Hengyang, Hunan, China at the age of 16,
shortly after its founding. She was in the
second class of sisters. During her 72 years
as a religious, Sister taught the primary
grades and was later the principal at
Immaculate Heart Primary School in Hong
Kong. Please keep the soul of our Sister in
your prayers. Photo at right is of Sr. Angela
