President’s Message
By John Sovis
Our first two technical meetings average attendance was 40. This
attendance rate does not improve our attendance over last year. The
Akron Section is hosting the next several meetings. I respectively
request that those of you that have not attended at least one meeting will
seriously consider attending several of the next five meetings. The dates
of the meetings are listed on the web site and newsletter so you can put
them on your calendar so you will be able to attend. If you want more
information about the topics you can contact our program chair Rik
Keeley, [email protected].
Our committees are planning and organizing their activities for this
year. These activities’ purpose is to support our objectives. You should
look for the activities in the newsletter, your e-mail and on our website,
www.specleveland.org/. We still need more directors and committee
helpers to carry out these activities. Look for e-mails from these
committees communicating the details for what they are doing. Helping with these committees will help
achieve our objectives. The committee chair names are listed in the newsletter.
2014-2015 OBJECTIVES
A. Fill all director positions.
B. Recruit two assistants for all committee chairs.
C. Improve meeting attendance 10-15%.
D. Expand education opportunities for youth.
E. Improve communication with members,

universities.
G. Recognize section member for service given
to the section and industry.

Nottingham Spirk Innovation Center Tour
October 13, 2014 SPE Technical Meeting
Mr. Marc Vitantonio and his technical team did an excellent job of providing a very informative tour of
the Nottingham Spirk Innovation Center, http://www.nottinghamspirk.com/vertical-innovation/. Marc is
a Program Director on the Engineering Team with over 30 years of experience in product development
and manufacturing. Before joining Nottingham Spirk, Marc developed numerous home appliances for
Williams-Sonoma, Health-O-Meter, Mr. Coffee and Sunbeam. Marc also developed medical devices at
Frantz Medical Development for Abbott Laboratories and Ross Laboratories. In his 14 years of
employment with Nottingham Spirk, Marc has innovated in a multitude of brands including Alcoa, PetSmart, Tide and Black & Decker. Marc attended Case Western Reserve University, here he earned a
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Masters in Business Administration.
Prior to our tour of the Innovation Center Marc and his team gave us an overview of some of the more
dynamic projects that Nottingham Spirk has undertaken. We learned about the rich history that
Nottingham Spirk has had in the Cleveland area and that the company has well over one hundred patents
related to their design efforts.
The Nottingham Spirk Innovation Center is a 60,000 square foot facility filled with over seventy experts
with all the right skills and all the necessary equipment working together to make ideas into products using
a process they developed called Vertical Innovation. Their process cuts the development time and gets
your products to market faster and more cost efficiently. During our visit, we will have the Vertical
Innovation Process explained to us and have a chance to see it in action.
The 29 SPE Cleveland Section members who attendd were guided on a tour by the following members of
Nottingham Spirk’s engineering and manufacturing staff (left to right in picture below):
 Chris Riker-Director, Information Technology
 Bill Rabbitt-Project Manager, Engineering Team
 Trevor Jackson-Manufacturing Program Director, Global Sourcing Team
 Marc Vitantonio-Program Director, Engineering Team
 Jeff Taggart-Program Director, Engineering Team (not pictured)
