Deltona High School
For the parents, students, & community supporters of Deltona High School.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Welcome back DHS Wolves and Wolves’ Families,
I am very excited and looking forward to another great year. Last year we had many
outstanding accomplishments as presented in the newsletters throughout the year. Our students
will continue to excel at Deltona High. I am looking forward to the 2016-2017 school year working
with the best students and families in the county to achieve academic success. I am asking that
the parents and students assist me in making Deltona High the best school in Volusia County.
We have two new assistant principals who have joined the Wolves’ Family. Ms. Robinson
is in charge of the Exceptional Student Education Department and Mr. Micallef is in charge of the
conduct management office, facilities, athletics and transportation. The rest of our administrative
team will remain the same. Dr. Lapnow will continue to oversee Curriculum and Testing; Mrs.
Jayne Baxter will oversee the DATA and scheduling and Mr. Ky Cowan, Teacher on Assignment,
will continue as Dean of Discipline.
The Deltona High Family is looking forward to a successful school year. Most recently we
have been recognized and received both the Gold and Silver Award designations in volunteerism
and community involvement. We are very proud of the students, faculty, staff, and parents who
worked together to make this possible.
We do know that growth is needed in all academic and accountability areas. We believe that
if we work together and push each and every one of us to the next level that anything is possible.
We will improve our FSA scores, end of course exams, and all other assessments given throughout
the year
As we begin the school year, each student will be receiving a folder with very important
information. Please review the student planner and review the policies, procedures and Wolf
expectations for all students. Students will be required to follow the Volusia
County dress code and NEW UNIFORM POLICY. Please note the detailed
information in all newsletters and on our website so that you can keep up to
date on the latest information at Deltona High. In addition, please continue
using the VIMS system this year. This gives you up to date information
on the progress of your son/daughter. Any questions, please contact the
school counselor.
Please become an active member in our SAC (School Advisory Council).
We need your input to help achieve excellence! SAC meetings are held the
second Tuesday of each month @ 6:00 in the Media Center. Please pay
attention to the meeting announcements and plan to attend!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free
to contact me.
Together we will IGNITE Dreams and make sure that students reach
their highest potential.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Carbonell
Principal

Students and staff will be required to remain inside classrooms and offices until an all clear is given. There will be no movement
allowed on campus. All gates will be closed and locked until an all clear is given. Visitors will not be allowed to enter or leave. Our
security team will monitor the situation continuously. Parents will be notified via Connect Ed or via our district media contact should
the situation warrant.
1-800-547-6237
If there is need to evacuate our campus, transportation will be contacted and ALL students and staff will be transported by
bus over to Galaxy Middle School, including students who drive onto campus. If an additional evacuation site is needed we will
also transport over to Pine Ridge High School. Students will be released to a parent/guardian only from one of these designated
locations…please do not come to the Deltona High campus to pick up your student. Parents will be notified via the Media
and Connect Ed if an evacuation is warranted. Once the situation has been resolved, students and staff will be allowed to come
back to the campus to retrieve their vehicles.
Parents, it is vitally important that we have accurate contact information in the event we need to notify you of an
emergency or if your student is ill. If you are not receiving regular Connect Ed messages from us there is a good chance
that we do not have your most recent contact information on file. Please contact us immediately to update your student’s
information so that we can effectively communicate with you
TARDY POLICY
Students who are not in class when the tardy bell rings will be considered late. Parents/guardians will NOT be able to excuse
any student without a doctor’s note. Excessive tardiness will result in the following: After-school detention, work detail, in-school
suspension or out-of-school suspension.
Your sons or daughters academic success is our number one goal. We believe academic performance begins with being in
class on time and ready to learn. Students will receive a disciplinary consequence for not following the expectations at DHS. As
you know, punctuality is an important career skill, so please encourage your student to be on time to each class.
EARLY CHECK-OUT
Parents requesting early check-out of their student can complete a Pre-Arranged check-out pass (located in the front office)
and return it to the attendance office a few days before the appointment. This alleviates any wait time for you when you come to
pick up your student. If you call or come in, please understand that we need some time to get your student for you. Please allow
30 minutes. This will allow the school the opportunity to look up the student’s schedule and send for him/her to meet you at the
Attendance Office. Parents/guardians, it is important that we check the driver’s license of anyone picking up your student early
from school. This will be done to ensure the safety and well-being of your child.
ATTENDANCE
If you are absent from school, phone calls or written excuses from the parent/guardian are required to be given to the
Attendance Office the same day of the absence (Ext.44091) The information should include the student’s name, alpha code, the
date and reason for the absence, the parent/guardian’s name and phone number. When a student has missed 15 or more excused/
unexcused days of school, further absences cannot be excused without a doctor’s note.
NOTE: The Florida Legislature has enacted requirements that schools report to the Department of Highway and Motor Vehicles
the names of students who fail to satisfy the attendance requirements. This refers to students who accumulate 15 unexcused
absences (excludes out-of- school suspensions) within 90 calendar days. Students who fail to satisfy attendance requirements will
be INELIGIBLE for driving privileges.

PARKING PERMITS
Parking Permits are required to park on campus. Parking on campus is reserved for Juniors and
Seniors who abide by school rules and procedures. All students who wish to drive to school must purchase a
$40.00 parking permit. Students must provide the school with a copy of their driver’s license, insurance card,
and vehicle registration to purchase the permit. Any student with an obligation will be unable to purchase a
parking permit. Once a student’s obligation is paid in full he/she may purchase a permit. All vehicles must
be registered and school permits placed on rear view mirror to have the privilege of parking in the student
parking lot. Seniors get first priority, then juniors.
PARKING LOT REGULATIONS
The privilege of parking on campus is reserved for those who abide by school rules and procedures.
Consequently, noncompliance with rules and procedures may result in having your parking privileges suspended
or revoked.
•
All cars parked on the school grounds must have a visible Deltona High School parking permit for the
current year, available for purchase in the Dean’s Office. Please place all parking permits on rear view
mirror. Student must present a valid driver’s license, current registration, and proof of insurance in
order to obtain a parking permit.
•
Parking permits will be confiscated if found in another student’s car and will result in disciplinary
consequences.
•
Students must park in designated student parking only. You must park in a legal parking spot. Do not
park on grass, hills, curbs, etc.. If you park illegally, a parking violation will be issued and left on your
car. The 2nd offense will result in the loss of parking privileges. After parking your vehicle make sure
you lock your door then proceed to building sites immediately. No loitering in the parking lot. Sitting in
cars in the parking lot is not permitted at any time. Under no circumstances are students allowed to park
in the faculty/visitor parking lot parallel to Wolf Pack Run. Failure to follow student parking lot policies
and procedures will result in disciplinary consequences.
•
Students participating in extracurricular or athletic events must leave their vehicles parked in the student
parking lot. DO NOT move it around to the faculty or gym area parking lots.
•
Reckless driving will not be tolerated on school grounds (speed limit is 5 mph). The driver and any
front passengers must wear seat belts when a vehicle is in gear.
•
Students are not permitted in the parking lot during school hours unless they have a valid pass from the
Dean’s Office or an Administrator. Leaving school materials and/or textbooks in the car is not a reason
for going to the parking lot during school hours.
•
The student parking lot is locked at 10:00 PM nightly when there are evening activities, and reopened
at 6:00 AM. Students being picked up after school or dropped off in the morning must use parent pick
up, not the student parking lot. Deltona High is not responsible for safety, security, or contents of your
vehicle, even though the parking area is monitored.

After the tremendous success of last year’s Freshman Transition Day, Deltona High School
will be hosting only first year Freshman students on August 15, 2016. After considering input from
stakeholders throughout the school and community this special day has been renamed Welcoming Our
Wolves (WOW) Day. This is a valuable opportunity to our Freshman students to learn about our campus,
academic programs and requirements, policies and procedures, and participate in a campus wide effort
to increase academic performance. Throughout the day students will receive class schedules, meet their
teachers, attend an extracurricular activities showcase, and learn best practices for success in high school.
Buses and lunches will function as a normal day. This is a required school day and all Freshman are expected
to be in attendance. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Dr. Lapnow at 386-575-4153.
Please remember that on Monday, August 15th only first year Freshman students should attend. All
other grade levels will report for classes on Tuesday, August 16th.

SENIOR GRADUATION CREDIT CHECKS
Beginning August 29, 2016, the Senior school counselor will meet with Senior students to check graduation
requirements and to discuss post-secondary plans. Watch your mail for copies of this very important update
and call the school counselor if you have any questions. If your student is planning to graduate this school
year and has not been called in for this credit check by the beginning of October, please contact the school
counselor immediately. It is imperative that Senior parents monitor their student’s progress by checking progress
reports and report cards quarterly. Also, VIMS Gradebook online grade book can be viewed daily by parents
and students. Seniors applying to colleges need to begin the application process and be mindful of deadline
dates. Counselors require a two-week turnaround to complete the school counselor section of applications
as well as letters of recommendations.
YOUTH PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (YPP)
Information-Student Volunteer Program Students will need to attend a volunteer workshop
as soon as possible next year in order to log volunteer hours on their transcript. Student volunteers
must only attend one workshop all throughout high school, but hours cannot be logged until they
attend the workshop. If students have been doing volunteer service and they attend a workshop
next school year, hours can only be accepted retroactively as of June 7, 2016. Volunteer hours
must be performed at a public, non-profit organization. Hours that are performed as part of a class
requirement may not be counted as volunteer hours. Also, please be aware that students CANNOT
receive volunteer hours if they have a Teacher Assistant position at school as part of their class
schedule. Students are encouraged to check the volunteer bulletin board across the hall from Dr.
Lapnow’s office in Building 6 to find out some volunteer opportunities in our community. They can
also go on the Volusia County School website to find out volunteer locations. Students must get preapproval from Mrs. Rayner, Youth Partnership Program Coordinator, in Building 6 to do community
service hours outside the State of Florida. Students must turn their hours in continuously throughout
the school year and all hours performed during the year must be completely turned in by the end
of that year. The deadline to turn volunteer hours in for seniors is May 12, 2017. However, please
turn in your hours as soon as possible so that your record can be kept up to date and accurate for
Bright Futures scholarships, which now require volunteer hours, college applications, SDD diplomas,
Health Academy requirements and for community scholarship purposes. Please contact Mrs. Rayner
if you have any questions. Volunteer Workshops – The YPP training is undergoing revisions. More
information will be available in the Fall as to how students can complete this requirement.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE!
Studies show that students who don’t read during the summer will struggle when they come back to school in the
fall. So, let’s PLEDGE to read throughout the summer. Join the 2016 Summer Literacy Adventure: Volusia Reads. To
pledge, go to: http://app1.fldoe.org/Communications/Forms/SummerLitAdventure.aspx. You can drop off your pledges
at the front office. We will collect them and send them to the appropriate county representative. In addition, participating
students will be entered to win a Kindle.
When we get back--the state will recognize the top 10 schools with the highest percentage of participation. The
TOP SCHOOL will receive a visit from First Lady Ann Scott.
If you need ideas or a list to refer to, go to: http://dhswolvesmediacenter.weebly.com/reading--literacy.html.

FLORIDA TEENS READ BOOK CLUB & BOOK BATTLE
Senior Class
We had such a great time participating in Florida Teens Read (FTR) this year. We established a book club featuring
the FTR titles. Members of the book club were engaged with Kahoot activities; attended a presentation by the author
of Nil, Lynne Matson; and participated in the BIG READ! featuring the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” where teachers,
students, and a representative of the Volusia County Public Library came together to discuss and exchange their views
about this popular historical novel. Sadly, Harper Lee, author of this book passed away on February 19, 2016. This added
another dimension to our conversation and education about the book’s theme. Our final activity featured a book battle
with Atlantic High School (representing the East). We, of course, represented the West. The competition took place on
March 15th, where members of both clubs went head-to-head answering questions using Kahoot. We split the rounds,
so Deltona will display the award until November 1st and Atlantic will display it until the next battle.
If you enjoy reading young adult books and healthy competition, consider joining our Book Club in September 2016.
Makerspace Ex’STREAM
What is a Makerspace? This is the question… here is the answer. The root word, “MAKE” defines the purpose.
The word, “SPACE” describes a place designated for this purpose. We called our Makerspace, “Ex’STREAM,” and it
resides in our media center. Students participated in craft to tech based activities-- everything from coloring to printing
3D objects was featured throughout the year. To see more about this year’s activities, see: http://dhswolvesmediacenter.
weebly.com/ex3stream-maker-space.html.
I look forward to adding more advanced activities, projects, and experiences that will make learning fun and
meaningful. This may include STEM driven activities, 3D Printer design, Raspberry Pi, coding, cultural crafts, and more.
Coming soon!
We will be looking to add a blog; Twitter and Facebook platforms to our reading and makerspace initiatives.
Stay tuned. In the meantime, visit our Deltona Media Wolf Pack site for new and upcoming events at: http://
dhswolvesmediacenter.weebly.com.
Remember how important it is to keep reading during the summer. It makes a difference to everything you’d hope
to achieve and accomplish in your lives; and the start of a new year, so much easier.
Have a great SUMMER!
