The Law Enforcement Occupations course, held at the Career Training Center, strongly represents the
combination of classroom learning and hands-on, career technical education that students find in
Baldy View ROP classes. In the classroom, the curriculum builds from the foundation set in the Baldy
View ROP course, Criminal Justice, as students go into further depth studying the law, the legal
system, and what is expected of those working within it. Outside the classroom, students experience
rigorous physical training that prepares them for the corresponding physical component encountered
in post-secondary law professional education, such as the Police Academy.
Officer Jose Ferreira teaches the course and shared how it prepares students for the fundamentals of
law enforcement education. “We emulate the Police Academy in this class. Students learn about the
law, and they are trained to march and be in good physical shape. When you’re doing marching drills
in the Academy, there’s no place to hide. If you’re falling out of line, everyone can see it. Students in
this course learn those drills now so they will already be able to do them once they take the next step
in their law enforcement education.”
Montclair High School senior, Andres Sanchez, took the Criminal Justice course before enrolling in
Law Enforcement Occupations and shared how both classes are preparing him to be a police officer.
“Criminal Justice prepared me for this class because we learned about the law, and this class goes
more in-depth. We learn about constitutional law, federal law, and state laws, and the difference
between them all. Plus, we get the physical training here.” Andres shared that he will begin his
post-secondary education at Chaffey College, then hopes to transfer to the University of La Verne to

they want to enter. ROP is about opportunity.” - Assembly Member Freddie Rodriguez
Assembly Member Freddie Rodriguez worked at Pomona Valley Hospital when he was a Baldy View ROP student, serving as
an X-ray technician and as a sterile process helper. After graduating Garey High School in 1983, he took a six-month course at
Mt. San Antonio College to become an Emergency Medical Technician, a position he held for over 30 years. He served as a
Pomona City Council Member for 7 years before being elected to the CA State Assembly. His District represents Pomona,
Chino, Ontario, Montclair, and unincorporated parts of Fontana. Director of Development and Public Relations, Dora Edney,
recently sat down with Assembly Member Rodriguez to talk about his work and his history as an ROP student.
Q: What were the most important skills you developed in ROP?
A: In working with a hospital and working with people in their time of need, I developed communication and listening
skills. Learning how to help people in situations where they need attention taught me about patience and public service.
Q: How did the skills you learned in ROP help prepare you for your career?
A: Working in a hospital got me interested in helping people. Being in that kind of atmosphere prepared me for my work
as an EMT. As a state legislator, I listen to people daily about their concerns and issues with the state of CA.
Q: Why is ROP important?
A: ROP allows students to relate to a career field they are interested in pursuing. In my case that was the medical field,
and it really sparked an interest in me.
Q: Is there anything you would like us to know about your work as a legislator?
A: Yes. I want people to know that I see myself as a public servant, not as a politician. I want people to know they can
contact my office about issues and concerns they have with our state. I would also like to talk about Bill 1798, which I passed
last year. This bill brings apprenticeship programs to healthcare related fields. As we see with the implementation of the
Affordable Care Act, there is much more focus on getting accessibility to healthcare services, without which there will be a
shortage of available care. There are many technical jobs in the health field young people will be able to take advantage of,
such as LVN and respiratory therapy. It relates to me personally and what I did in becoming an ROP student.

THE STUDENTS
Criminal Justice
The Criminal Justice course familiarizes students with the criminal justice system and also serves as a prerequisite for
the Law Enforcement Occupations course. Officer Arnold Mathias teaches the ROP Criminal Justice course at Chino
High School where he draws from his experience as a police officer to engage students in class discussions and provide
a realistic understanding of what those working in the criminal justice system experience in their careers. Officer
Mathias also keeps his students sharp on their current events and uses topical stories to illustrate lesson plans.
Chino High School senior, Richard Romero, who would like to become a corrections officer, said he enjoys the class
discussions. “Officer Mathias has lots of stories to give us an overview of what it’s like to be a police officer,” he said.
“We learn about the basis of what different laws mean, about the Penal Code, and what citizens’ basic rights are.”
Officer Mathias, who earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama before
serving in the Army, said his students are active learners. “ROP is outstanding for these kids. This class helps them
formulate a plan to achieve a career in criminal justice. Taking ROP classes exposes them to their career dreams.”

Stage Technology
The Stage Technology Course,
taught by Baldy View ROP alum, Eric
Mensen, introduces students to the
interworking of theatrical
productions from behind the scenes.
The class produces shows at the
Highlander Auditorium at Upland
High School throughout the year.
Including dress rehearsals and live
shows by both students and professional actors, the class produces over
200 event days a year. The class regularly sees its students go on to have careers in theatre and
stage productions. Over 10 students from the class currently work for Disney! Upland Senior, Majd
Hamdallah, has a long-term goal of working for Disney after he continues to study sound engineering at a
four-year university. “Before I took this class, I had no interest in sound engineering. I discovered it after
taking this class for a semester, and I loved it so much that I enrolled in the advanced class.”

Students in Greg Stewart’s Baldy View ROP plumbing class at Chaffey
High School are always prepared for employment in the industry
after completing the class. Students are awarded a certificate that
allows them to not only gain entry-level jobs in plumbing, but
provides them with the skills necessary to gain employment in a
variety of related fields. While several of Mr. Stewart’s students have
gone on to become plumbers; others have used their knowledge to
work for related companies such as the Gas Company or drawn from
their training in understanding the three most important words in
plumbing parts: size, material, and description, to become vendors
for related companies.

Chaffey Senior and course completer Olivia Alvarez, 18, praised the class not only for providing her with
technical training but opening her eyes to the importance of plumbing, saying, “Mr. Stewart taught us that
plumbing equals the health of the nation. All of our water, drinking included, comes from the work of
plumbers. Now when I see a plumber, I see an educated person. I see a person who understands math
and science too, not just someone who fixes things.” Olivia added that she could get a job in plumbing
with her certificate, and has applied to UC Riverside as well as other colleges.
Agriculture Sales & Marketing
On Friday, March 6th, students from the San Antonio High
ROP course, Agriculture Sales and Marketing, set out to visit
the Natural Foods Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center in
Anaheim, CA.
Students from the Agriculture Sales and Marketing class at the Natural Foods Expo
The objective of the trip was for students to begin to develop
an eye for marketing tactics through observing one of the
largest tradeshows in the country. Thanks to New Hope, San
Antonio High School ROP students were allowed to attend the
expo on a scholarship and meet some of the CEOs from the
most successful companies in the US. Special thanks to
Agriculture Sales and Marketing teacher, Dessa D’Aquila, for
sharing this story!

STUDENT COMPETITIONS
The Brick, Block, and Stone Masonry Baldy View ROP students at Upland High School
and Boys Republic competed in the annual Jim Broncatello Top Notch Trowel
competition on Saturday, May 2nd. The competition featured five schools and was
hosted by Boys Republic. Students worked hard under the sun in both individual
and team categories, including building corner structures and eight-foot walls. A
panel of judges that included professional masons judged the structures not only on
their soundness, but also on their cleanliness.

prepared him to compete. “My ROP class teaches me how to be a good worker and
a good teammate, and also how to be efficient. I’ve learned how to work without
stressing over a project when it becomes challenging.”
The founder of the competition and former masonry teacher at AB Miller, Jim
Broncatello, still attends the competition every year and shared his joy for how it has

Students from Ayala and Claremont High Schools taking Jim
Londagin’s Virtual Enterprise put their entrepreneurial savvy to
the test on Friday, May 1st at Claremont High School. The Virtual
Enterprise Year-End Competition and Celebration was based on
students’ abilities to sell their businesses as franchises to other
students from throughout southern California. Our students'
ideas included a dietary supplement designed to increase focus, a
software suite that links multiple devices and includes a virtual
assistant, and a technologically advanced clothing line that allows
consumers to upload various designs to add to their current
attire.

Claremont senior, Chelsy Leet, serves as the HR Assistant for her
team’s company, Ultimate. She shared how the class will assist
her moving forward with her career goals. “This class teaches me
how to talk to people, cooperate, and ultimately get what you
want which is how to sell products. I want to be in real estate so
this class teaches me so much and I will definitely use the lessons
I’ve learned.”
Claremont and Ayala students both placed well in the
competition, with Claremont’s Ultimate selling the most
franchises of any school. Claremont’s Apeiro came in first in both
the Comprehensive Programs and Divisional Business Plan
categories. Claremont’s Ultimate and Ayala’s Titan tied at second
place in the Divisional Business Plan category.

Honoring Memorial Day
Each Memorial Day, the Nation honors
those Americans who have fallen while
defending our country and its values. While
these heroes should be honored every day for
their profound contribution to securing our
Nation's freedom, they and their families
should be especially honored this Memorial
Day. Thank you to all of our brave veterans!
The Cougar Cubs Child Development Center at Rancho Cucamonga High
School is designed to create an enriched environment, offering a variety
of activities in which all participants can grow physically, socially,
emotionally, and intellectually. The Center has operated since Rancho
Cucamonga High School was built in May
1993. It maintains a teacher to child ratio
of 1:10. The program also serves as a
community classroom for Baldy View ROP
students in the Careers in Education and
Careers in Child Development classes.
When Baldy View ROP students are in the
classroom, the child to teacher ratio can
be as low as 1:3! BVROP students are
positive role models for the children.
Cougar Cubs regularly participates in
various activities, field trips, and enjoys
class visitors.

Officer Jose Ferreira joins BVROP as the new Law
Enforcement Occupations instructor at the Career Training
Center. Officer Ferreira currently works for the Fontana
Police Department and has worked as a police officer for 21
years. Prior to becoming an officer, he served 8 years in the
military and earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice
from California Coast University. In 2011, Officer Ferreira was
one of four police officers in the nation to receive the National Association of
School Resource Officers Award of Excellence. Officer Ferreira said he enjoys
teaching students what it takes to become a police officer in the state of
California and is rewarded by how quickly and enthusiastically his students
learn. He is an avid golfer, father of three, and his wife is a teacher in the
Etiwanda School District.
Daniel Gipson joins BVROP as the new Welding instructor
at Upland High School. He has been a certified welding
inspector for the last 12 years with the American Welding
Society. Prior to becoming an inspector, Daniel worked as a
fitter and welder for over 30 years. He took Welding Basics
as an ROP student himself in 1980, and afterwards attended
the Airco Tech Institute where he obtained his Los Angeles
City Welding Certification. He is excited to work with students and teach them
the fundamentals of torch cutting, welding, plan reading, and basic fitting and
fabrication. He looks forward to sharing with them the principals of being a
successful welder and the career advantages afforded to them in the welding
industry. Daniel enjoys restoring cars in his free time.

Baldy View ROP and Chino Valley Unified School
District Join Together in Professional Development
This spring, Baldy View ROP facilitated a professional development session with the CTE teachers of Chino Valley
Unified School District. Chino Valley requested that their CTE teachers learn how to properly scaffold instruction
within Bill Daggett’s “Rigor and Relevance Framework”. In support of Chino Valley’s vision, Baldy View ROP teachers
who teach in Chino Valley were invited to attend. During the meeting, Baldy View ROP participants including Gerald
Jo, Sam Abdelmalek, and Julianne Baun quickly took leadership roles within their small groups and helped their
Chino Valley colleagues understand and apply the innovative concepts being covered. The event would not have been
possible without the contributions of Crystal Whitley, Roseanne Redfearn, Lisa Hackett, Christine Thomas, and
Antonia Walters. Thank you to everyone who made this event successful!
