JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2016 issue no 17
FROM THE
MINISTER
Happy New Year and every blessing
for 2016!
As I am writing this we are about to
run our church panto ‘Cinderella’. I
know I said I wouldn’t be in it this
year but I was ‘persuaded’!
‘Cinderella’ is a lovely story and we all love a good story. The characters in our
panto may be a bit different from the traditional ones – we have Baron Hard
Up, the step-sisters’ father and we have a Clock Witch who is trying to destroy
the spells of the Fairy Godmother. But the story ends happily when downtrodden Cinderella marries her Prince and the spells of the Fairy Godmother stop
the Clock Witch…. because ‘good overcomes all evil’.
We are fast approaching Easter when we will once more celebrate the victory
of Christ over death, good over evil, light over darkness and love over hatred.
We exult in the empty tomb and the message of the resurrection – good news
that changed not just history but the destiny of us all for ever.
The Risen Christ shapes everything we are and everything we do; he is able
to transform lives including our own. What we are now is never the final word.
Our mistakes, our weaknesses, our trials and our sorrows are not the end of
the story, for through the Risen Christ God offers a new beginning to all and
the result is a happy ending.
So rejoice every day in what Christ has done for you, for me and for
everyone.— Susan
Early Morning Services
We have a team helping with the
services at 9.15 am on a Sunday –
Beth Duncan, Anita Jamieson,
Jenny Tonner, Ian Meach and
Susan Sutherland. Bill Sutherland
and Peter Munro take care of the
sound, the power-point slides and
videos. So it is quite a team!
When we arrive we are greeted with
coffee and donuts by Joyce Meach,
Dreena Campbell and Dominique
Munro. Over these last few months
we have learned many new contemporary worship songs. There is a
short talk, sometimes a drama, and
time to reflect. Why not give it a try?
Screen and Projector System
in the Church
Over Christmas we used the screen
and projector at all our services. The
feedback was very positive…. and
the singing was much better!
OUR CHURCH STATED
ANNUAL MEETING
will take place in the hall,
after the service,
on SUNDAY 13 MARCH

afternoon at 1.30pm. The members play
carpet bowls or board games and take a
mid-afternoon break for tea and home
baking which is on offer at the cafe.
Please feel free to come along.
Dundee Foodbank
The Foodbank was very well supported over the Christmas period
and the number of people requiring
food was higher than ever. Please
continue to help with this worthwhile project.

Christmas collections raised £1703.11
(including gift aid) for the Syrian
Refugees. A cheque has been sent to
Christian Aid.
£361.75 was raised by our Posada
during Advent and a cheque was
sent to the Salvation Army to feed
the Homeless over Christmas and
New Year.
The Bridge Lunch organised by the
Fellowship Committee raised
£916.70. This amount was split between the Brae Riding for the Disabled and our own church building
renovation projects.
The final total raised at our
Christmas Fayre was £4,409.
The £245 raised by members who
participated in our Field of Remembrance was sent to Poppy Scotland.
People setting up home need basic
items such as cutlery, crockery, bedding and cleaning products. If you
can provide any of these, Starter
Packs will be pleased to receive
them. There is a designated space for
your contributions opposite the
Vestry door.
Crieff Holiday Weekend
The Crieff Holiday Weekend [15-17]
April is later this year so the weather
should be 'springlike' by then.
Whether indoors or outdoors, the
weekend provides time for strengthening existing friendships and making new ones. If you would like to
come, Alan Philip [775612] will give
you any information you require.
Organists
From 1 January 2016 Bill Ford and
Stewart Fyffe have been appointed
by the Kirk Session as our organists
and choir leaders. This is a job share
position. Bill and Stewart have been
playing for us for some time and
now their position is official.
They have different styles and musical tastes which contributes to our
worship services.
Advance Notice: The Outreach
Group are holding a Fashion Show
in aid of Christian Aid on Wednesday 11 May Tickets £7 including
refreshments.
The Guild: This year the World Day
of Prayer is on Friday 4 March at St
Luke’s and Queen Street.
The Panto Season is now officially
over! Once again we were well supported by encouraging audiences
who participated enthusiastically
when required. A pantomime production is a team effort and we are
grateful to those members of our
congregation who gave up a lot of
time to take part either on stage or
behind the scenes.
At the time of going to print, we do
not have a final figure raised but
expect this to be over £3000.

The Choir has resumed weekly
rehearsals on Thursday evenings from
7pm until 8.30pm in the Session Room
and is working through the Introits
and Anthems for the next three
months.
We would be pleased to accept more
members (especially men!) so if you
enjoy singing, feel free to come along
to a rehearsal to find out what happens. Don’t worry if you can’t read
music – many of our members learn
by rote and the more experienced are
always ready to help and support
newcomers. Nor do you need to commit to attending every week – you
will be welcome whenever you can
join us.
If you would like any further information, please contact either of our
Organists, Bill Ford or Stewart Fyffe,
any Sunday.

long! Everyone has an input and
things are discussed in greater
depth.

From Vivien in the
Philippines
Happy New Year to you all!
At the beginning of December we
took 14 of our young people from
church to Baguio, to attend an Asia
Pacific Youth Conference. We were
very proud of them for raising their
own registration fees and admired
them and their families for the sacrifices they made to go there. They
had a great few days at the camp.
Some of our young people came and
helped pack up gifts for Christmas.
We are so grateful to you for the
money raised at your concert in
December which made Christmas an
extra special one for our ministries.
Thanks to the generosity of those who attended the Bridge Drive, we were
able to donate £458 to the Brae Riding for the Disabled. This was a greatly
valued contribution to their annual running costs of £165,000. The Brae provides carriage driving and horse riding lessons to children and adults with all
levels of disabilities.
Congregational Questionnaires.
A big thank you to everyone who returned completed questionnaires and to
those who attended our Information Evenings held in the church hall in
November.
Many people have volunteered to join task groups or help with various duties
such as welcoming people at the services and beadling on a Sunday. By now
individuals should have been contacted regarding these.
A database is being set up and as yet the information regarding visits and
volunteers required to deliver network has not yet been inputted, so please be
patient with us. This will be up and running shortly and we will be in touch with
you as soon as we can.
On Christmas Eve we had our family
Christmas party at the church. Each
family was given rice, food and toiletries. Also leaders in the church were
given food parcels and young people
got small gifts. They enjoyed the
fellowship, food and games.
We thank you for your continued
prayers and support.
God bless you all in 2016.
Love Vivien and August

I have been extremely encouraged both by the attendance at our Information
Evenings and the responses to the questionnaires. Many people are wishing
to become involved in the life of the church and this will help share the load as
the Body of Christ continues to grow. Susan

Jerusalem Please bring daffodils for our cross which will be outside the main

Jesus’ last words from the cross.
