SELECT THE BEST MASK FOR THE TASK!
Crosstex masks meet Low (Primary), Moderate and
High ASTM* performance classifications, based on:
fluid resistance, filtration value, breathability, and flammability.
Evaluate all procedures for anticipated aerosol, moisture,
spray, and spatter. Then use the Maskenomics™ System
(pages 2-3) to find the optimal mask for each task.

PERSONAL BARRIERS
CROSSTEX MASKS MEET HIGH, MODERATE
AND LOW (PRIMARY) ASTM* PERFORMANCE
CLASSIFICATIONS, BASED ON:
FLUID RESISTANCE – one of the most important features of
a mask. When masks become saturated from both inside and outside,
“wicking”, or the rapid transfer of substances through the mask is likely
to occur. High fluid resistance means better, longer-lasting masks.
FILTRATION VALUE – the % of particles of a certain size, filtered
out by a mask. This is determined by a masks filtration material and its
pore size in microns. A mask that filters out a higher % of smaller particles
is more protective. It is important to know both the % of particles filtered,
and the size of particles. Two terms are used to describe these values:
Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) = % of bacteria filtered out at
a pore size of 1-5 micron (um).
Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) = % of particles filtered out
(do not pass through) at a pore size of 0.1-1 micron (um).
Particles in this range are “sub-micron”. PFE is also “sub-micron
particulate filtration efficiency”.
DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE (DELTA P) – the pressure
drop across the mask material. It is inversely related to breathability,
but with greater mask efficiency, you may lose some breathability because
the mask is a more protective barrier. The lower the Delta-P, the greater the
breathability.
*American Society for Testing and Materials
BEYOND ASTM RATING:
USE-LIFE – how long a mask should last. Masks should be changed after
20 minutes of heavy exposure to fluid, after one hour of normal use, or
after each patient for optimum protection. Full face shields reduce mask
exposure to wet splatter, and therefore can presumably increase use-life.
MASK FIT AND SEAL – extremely important for comfort, visibility and
proper performance. Metal strips that maintain conformity to the nose ridge
provide a lasting and tight fit to the face. Mask ties or earloops can be
adjusted, twisted, and angled to pull mask edges tightly to the face contour
to prevent leakage.
ANTI-FOG FEATURES – designed to prevent exhaled air from fogging
eyewear. Crosstex uses a strip of extra soft non-woven material
engineered to block and absorb moisture from exhalation inside the top
edge of a mask (Comfort Cushion®). The strip also cushions the nose from
eyewear and enhances the seal.
HYPOALLERGENIC OR NON LATEX MATERIALS –
used by Crosstex to reduce skin and respiratory irritation.
INNER MASK LAYER – There is an inside and outside to masks.
All Crosstex masks have a non-dyed, (white) inside layer to be worn next
to the skin with earloops attached to the outer layer for added comfort
and a more secure seal.
OVERALL COMFORT – a comfortable mask encourages compliance.
You will WANT to wear Crosstex masks.

1 Provides the often imitated, but never
duplicated, Crosstex embossing pattern,
which allows moisture to flow horizontally,
across the towel, protecting patient’s clothing.
2 Offers our exclusive reinforced edge embossing
design for added strength and durability where
towel clips are placed.
3 Bonds the layers of tissue (and poly, when
applicable) securely together, eliminating
separation of the layers.
4 Creates the strength of the towel horizontally
through the combination of our proprietary
manufacturing equipment and tissue formulation.
This prevents tearing when a towel clip is applied.

Great surgical scrub
Persistent, residual antisepsis
Effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi & yeast
FAST: CHG acts rapidly
Non-toxic
Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, Keratin and Liposomes
CHG is more effective than other antimicrobials –
It reacts strongly with negatively charged bacterial cells, achieving high Log 10 reduction of skin microbes. When used as a 2% antimicrobial
handwash, CHG is as effective as 4%, but is gentle to skin, has a pleasant odor and does not stain. CHG is long acting. It chemically binds to
epithelium, where it remains effective, even in presence of blood (organic material). At the same time, CHG is non-toxic because it has negligible
potential for absorption through intact skin.

Units of measure for gloves:
Protein and powder levels are stated per glove, per gram of glove, or per square decimeter
(dm2) of surface area. Measurements are calculated using estimates of glove size:
• 1 glove = estimated 7.8 grams
• 1 glove = estimated 8.9 dm2
Latex vs. non-latex:
Latex allergy and sensitivity is increasing among healthcare workers. Antigenic latex
should be limited in latex gloves, and non-latex gloves must be available for sensitive
individuals, including patients.
Warning: These products do not eliminate the risk of contracting any disease or infection. Follow all instructions
and warnings on the use of these products. Protective gloves must be used in accordance with applicable Federal
regulations and guidelines as may be issued from time to time. Components used in making gloves may cause
allergic reactions in some users. If reactions are suspected, cease using the product and consult a physician. Not
intended for use as a general chemical or absolute biological barrier.
Caution: Safe use of latex gloves by or on latex sensitized individuals has not been established. Certain gloves
contain natural rubber latex which may cause allergic reactions.

HAND
PROTECTION
THE BENEFITS OF WEARING FITTED LATEX OR FITTED NITRILE (LEFT/RIGHT MOLDED) GLOVES:
• Provide superior ergonomic fit (molded on anatomically correct forms).
• Fit hand contours, resulting in less hand constriction and impingement on muscles, nerves and blood vessels,
especially when gripping instruments.
• Allow increased blood flow and innervation to hand and
wrist muscles, helping to reduce hand fatigue & discomfort.
• Recommended for long procedures.
CROSSTEX NON- LATEX GLOVES:
• Nitrile fitted gloves have superior strength, fit, &
better protection from chemical penetration than
latex gloves.
• Copolymer overgloves are clear plastic.
CROSSTEX LATEX GLOVES:
• All are natural rubber latex, natural or white color
• Low antigenic protein (Allotex) reduces latex exposure
• Meet ASTM D5712 Latex protein standard:
Maximum soluble total protein content of < 200
micrograms (mg) per dm2
POWDERED VS. POWDER-FREE:
Powder is used to separate gloves from the molds in
manufacturing, and as a donning agent, but may be
an irritant and can also increase exposure to latex by
carrying latex proteins. Glove powder should be
minimized, and users should be instructed to aseptically wipe
off powder traces when necessary.
• Crosstex uses minimal USP cornstarch
• “Powdered” gloves have < 10 mg/dm2 powder residue
• “Powder-free” gloves have < 2mg powder residue /glove,
meeting ASTM-D 6124-01 standard.
NON-POWDER DONNING AGENTS/PROCESSES:
• Chlorinated gloves: treated with chlorine to harden
surface for non-sticky, easy donning.
• Non-chlorinated: removal of chlorine through coatings –
usually extends glove use-life.
• Polymer coated: synthetic coating to facilitate donning
AMBIDEXTROUS (EXAM) GLOVES:
• Provide economy and efficiency.
• Can stretch to fit hand contours (Crosstex gloves have
low modulus - low resistance to stretching).

SURFACE BARRIERS REDUCE THE RISK OF CROSS-CONTAMINATION CAUSED BY AIRBORNE AEROSOLS, SPLASH AND SPATTER
The most common surfaces easily protected by surface barriers are:
TOUCH SURFACES —
Usually contaminated by staff during a procedure.
Examples: Air/water syringe / light handles / headrests / unit controls / chair switches / x-ray exposure button / handpiece holders /
evacuator tip holders / saliva ejector tip holders / handpieces - high/low speed, ultrasonic scaler and air abrasion
TRANSFER SURFACES — Not touched directly by the dental staff, but usually are contacted by contaminated instruments.
Examples: Bracket trays / instrument trays
SPLASH, SPATTER & AEROSOL SURFACES —
Comprise all surfaces in the operatory not classified as touch or transfer surfaces.
Examples: Dental chairs / x-ray heads / view boxes / unused countertop areas
