There are three locations in Dobson Ranch with pools! There is a pool at the
Saratoga Rec Center, 2345 S. Saratoga and two pools at the Los Altos Rec Center,
2524 W. Campo Alegre. The pool at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, has been recently
renovated and is beautiful! If you have little ones, they can have some zero-depth
water play at the splash pad at La Casita. It’s an ideal way for non-swimmers to
stay cool and burn off some energy.
Swim lessons are a great way to prepare your child for a safe & fun summer at
the pool. Please see page 13 for swim lesson details at Dobson Ranch. Looking for
a splash of fitness? Dobson Ranch offers Aqua Zumba and Water Aerobic classes.
Please see page 14 and 15 for details.

Do you love summer? Do you love water? There’s no better way to beat the stifling summer
heat than to spend a day at the pool—catching rays, cooling off in the water and, of course,
spending time with family and friends. Swimming is a perfect summer activity – especially on
days when the weather is so hot you feel like melting!
Laughing, splashing, and playing in the pool all day sounds like a great idea… now where do
you go to have all that cool fun? You don’t have to go far. There are amazing pool facilities right
here in Dobson Ranch!

Director’s Report
By David L. Jones
Executive Director
In this month’s newsletter Joanna Loftus, Ranchers
Roundup editor, highlights the pools within Dobson
Ranch. It’s that time of year when residents flock to one
or all of our three pool locations. At the Los Altos facility
there are two pools to enjoy. On the north side of the
facility is a quaint and cozy small pool, like what you would
find in a back yard, to enjoy with friends and family. On
the south side of the facility is the junior Olympic pool for
those that like to swim laps. The junior Olympic pool area
is larger so you have room to spread out either on the pool
deck or grass area under a giant umbrella with views of
Lake One. The pool at Saratoga is a medium size pool with
lush green plants and trees that surround the pool area.
Water fitness classes are held at this location for residents
to enjoy. The pool that probably gets the most use is the
pool at La Casita. The staff sees over a hundred people
each day. The high turnout could possibly be that there’s
a splash pad adjacent to the pool. The splash pad has nice
water amenities that the kids enjoy and the parents and/
or grandparents sit comfortably under the shade in view
of the fun. Just outside the pool area is a playground for
the kiddos to have more fun. By the time you get them
home, they should be wiped out. Check out the pictures of
the three locations on page 5. The pool and splash pad at
La Casita was recently remodeled. Los Altos recently had
deck repairs and pool lights replaced. All three locations
will have new comfortable pool furniture this month. The
team at Dobson Ranch wants you to enjoy all locations,
please check out pool rules on page 20 to keep you and
yours safe. Daily the staff maintenance the pool and the
areas around them for everyone’s safety. Unfortunately we
may have to close a pool due to maintenance. When that
happens it could be a hassle to travel to another location,
but I’m positive once you get to the alternative location you
will enjoy it just as much.
At the May Board meeting, the Board of Directors
agreed to renovate the courts at Los Altos. The staff hopes
that you will enjoy the refurbished courts and all updates
to the association’s common areas. We strive to continue
improving the amenities that you enjoy. Check future
newsletters for progress and upcoming projects.
Swim Lessons
13
Jesse and his team are creating summer fun for everyone to
enjoy. For the kids… summer preschool, tennis camp (page
11 and 14), swim lessons (page 13), Back to School Movie
(page 16), Summer Camp (page 17). Also check out the
recreation classes, pickleball, water aerobics, Aqua Zumba
(all on page 12), discounted Arizona Diamondback tickets
(page 15) and discounted movie tickets. There’s much to
do at Dobson Ranch.
Speaking of pools…. I noticed that green pools are in
the local news highlights. If you know of a green pool
you can report it to the City of Mesa at http://mesaaz.
gov/residents/environmental/drain-or-backwash-yourpool or call 480-644-2061 and to Maricopa County at
http://www.maricopa.gov/EnvSvc/Complaints/Forms/
ComplaintForm.aspx or call 602-506-6616. Some may say
that green pools are habitats for mosquitoes, but according
to John Townsend, Vector Control Division Manager with
the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department,
he states, “just because a pool is green, does not mean that
it is breeding mosquitoes.”
Mosquitoes usually come out after a monsoon. Some
residents feel that mosquitoes breed in the lakes. I want
you to know that we created a unique ecosystem within our
lakes. The Association stocks fish that eat the mosquito’s
larvae on the surface of the lake. The Association also
has a dragonfly habitat, thanks to homeowner Kathrine
Blomquist, which also eat the larvae. The July issue of the
Ranchers’ Roundup will provide tips that may help you
from having mosquitoes breed in your own back yard.
The City of Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign started
June 1. Please see page 7 for more information on this
important campaign.
Lastly, just a quick reminder of the Arizona Celebration
of Freedom presented by Republic Services and the City of
Mesa. For the second consecutive year, this free event is
on July 4th from 6pm to 10:30pm at the Mesa Convention
Center and Mesa Amphitheatre, 263 N. Center Street and
along Center Street between Second Street and University
Drive. Entertainment, classic cars, live music, patriotic
displays, family fun, fireworks and much more to do and
see. Please see page 24 for more information on how you
can be part of the event.
Have a fun and safe summer. Remember to watch your
children around water.
Please call 911 for reporting emergencies,
vandalism, suspicious activity, etc. occurring
on or to Ranch property.

I found a great piece of American history that I would like to share. Please keep reading even if you don’t like history…
this little history trivia is very cool!
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month. He recognized ice cream as a fun and
nutritious food that is enjoyed by 90 percent of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all
people of the United States to observe this event with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
Dobson Ranch has a great activity planned, so mark your calendars because July is right around the corner and we want to eat more
ice cream! You know what is even better than ice cream?!? FREE ice cream!!! Come celebrate ice cream at a FREE Ice Cream Social for all
HOA members sponsored by the Dobson Ranch Recreation Department on Friday, July 17 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the La Casita Recreation
Center located at 2719 S. Reyes. While you are there please enjoy the beautiful pool and fun splash pad!
Don’t forget there are three locations in Dobson Ranch with pools! There is a pool at the Saratoga Rec Center, 2345 S. Saratoga, two
pools at the Los Altos Rec Center, 2524 W. Campo Alegre, and the pool and splash pad at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes. The amenities at Dobson
Ranch are here for you to use, enjoy and stay coooool!
I am always looking for content for the paper. If you live by a “Good Neighbor” or know someone with a “Green Thumb”, submit their information. Have
you “Tried and Liked” a great business or eatery near Dobson Ranch? Let me know! I know there are great cooks in Dobson Ranch so send me your recipes
and I will include them in the paper. I also welcome comments, questions, suggestions, photos and kind words!
Please be a part of this great publication and contact me! Email [email protected] or call 480-831-8314 and ask for Joanna. The necessary part:

Be a volunteer weather observer. Rainlog.org is the place where citizens can
help track regional rainfall so that water managers, drought planners, weather
reporters and scientists can get a better picture of precipitation patterns across
the Southwest. Better information on precipitation patterns can help us make
better decisions regarding the management of our natural resources, especially
water. Participation in Rainlog.org is free. All that is needed is a rain gauge and
a computer or smart phone to enter the amount of rain on a daily or monthly
basis. For information on where to locate your
TruChek rain gauge and how to install and read it,
please log on to www.rainlog.org and look at the
gauge guide under the “handbook” tab. You will
also find the following information available on
the website:
• how to become a registered rain logger
• how to report and edit your precipitation data
• your rainfall records, including tables and

Amenities
The World is Changing
By Craig A. Wilson
Water Management Director
The world is changing, but hardly as we
expected. Atlanta is warmer than Phoenix,
Arizona has more water than California and my
toes are cold. Doesn’t everyone wear sandals
nearly year round, at least by the end of April?
Now we are looking at seven inches of snow in
Flagstaff.
One of the bottled water companies has a plant in Sacramento where it buys
water from the municipal water treatment plant, and bottles, seals and stacks pallet
after pallet of all sizes of water bottles for distribution throughout the west. Now
one would suppose that water meant for drinking is the first priority for a drop of
water, even a liter, half liter or forbid, a full cup in a drought. The water has been
filtered, cleaned, disinfected, chlorinated and examined for any number of hazardous
substances that might harm our health. We have the same protection here as the City
of Mesa maintains the same standards of treatment. Hydration is still the purpose of
carrying a bottle of water and hydration should trump drought.
But, did you know that it takes 1.39 liters of water to bottle one liter of water? The
factory workers must stay hydrated. That is what I read in Wikipedia. The real issue
though is not about filling of the bottle, but about emptying of the bottle. I cannot
remember the last time I drained a bottle of water; beer bottle perhaps although
maybe not the very last bottle of beer. The last bottle of water I started may still be in
my car and I doubt it will see my lips again. Somehow that bottle will get drained and
find its way to the recycling barrel.
If that last half of a bottle of water were to be drained into its intended target, all
would be good with the world. More likely the water has warmed to the temperature
of the car’s interior and no longer holds it bouquet. The ideal disposal would be to
carry the bottle to the sink to spill its essence down the drain; the bottle itself would
of course end up in the recycling barrel. The household drain is an essential part
of our homes. It must also be fed. The household drain empties into the sanitary
sewer system which works by mixing everything with water to flow on to our sewer
treatment plant; which needs water to accomplish its mission.
So the question about water in bottles has no answer. There are just too many
short cuts to make things go awry. I’ll bet one third of each bottle goes unconsumed
and in most instances is left in the bottle as it goes into a waste receptacle. Emptied
on the ground (read pavement or concrete – not grass or plants) would be my second
guess before the bottle is properly discarded. So roughly, only half the water used
in creating a bottle of water is consumed - not wise and not abundant nor drought
tolerant.
This was a trick question. The real culprit in the story is the bottle itself, not its
contents. Water will find a way to recycle itself, at least for someone else’s benefit. A
plastic bottle will not, at least not for the majority the plastic bottles. They will persist
long enough to be left behind.
A better tactic is to use a reusable bottle, one that can be cleaned, filled with tap
water, taken with you and returned home with you. The unused water is then recycled
and the bottle is readied for the next outing. Water is necessary for our health:, for
that purpose water is abundant if wisely used.

Aqua Zumba keeps the Zumba Fitness workout party going in the pool. Aqua Zumba
is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines. The
typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton,
and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land
tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. There is less impact on
your joints during an Aqua Zumba class so you can really let loose. Water creates
natural resistance, which means every step is more challenging and helps tone your
muscles.

Tennis Talk
By Doug Kelton
Dobson Ranch Tennis Professional
These fundamental tennis skills and techniques are necessary for players to
reach an elite tennis level.
SERVE It Up!
The tennis serve is the beginning of a point in a tennis game. The player who serves is
called the server and the player on the other end is the receiver. There are several types of
serves such as topspin, topspin-slice, flat, slice, kick and many others.
Since the serve begins every point, it’s crucial to develop this among other tennis skills
and techniques.
A perfect serve is achieved by executing the right stance, the right tennis serve grip and
the correct ball toss. In addition, power can also be added if the server has the ability to execute the proper body movements (knee bending and body coiling), the right racket swing
and the right point of contact. Most importantly, the serve must be developed as a primary
weapon while achieving pinpoint accuracy and depth.
Here are a few good tips for your serve:
The Newton (tennis) Effect Long before he discovered gravity, Newton discovered spin. He was watching some
of his students play tennis indoors at Cambridge in 1672 when he was 29. He accurately
described how a tennis ball arcs its way over the net and dives for the ground.
Thirteen years after he discovered spin, Newton discovered gravity. Spin came first to
him and it should come first to you, too. Servers in tennis who rely on gravity can only hit
it so fast on their first serve. Then they have to pop an easy one in for their second. This
is the “cannonball first, pattycake second” method. In order to get topspin (or forward
roll) on a tennis ball, the bottom line is this: your racket must be a foot below the ball and
traveling up when it hits it. It’s a brush, a glance, a nick, not a flat-splat. If you are trying
to learn how to hit a topspin serve, find yourself a certified teaching pro and save yourself
some headaches. Once you get it, you got it, and you never lose it.
The sine qua non (without not which) of a topspin serve is a continental grip. If you
refuse to get out of the Eastern forehand grip, nothing can help you. You are doomed to a
3.5 ceiling. All 4.0 players and up have topspin serves.
Bounce IT! All pros dribble. No, not when they are drinking; when they are serving! They bounce
the ball before they serve. It’s the first domino in the serving sequence. It sets your weight
forward, relaxes your tossing hand, and allows you to see if you are foot-faulting before
you rock back into the ready-position.
Bend IT! All pros are up on their toes when they serve. They may not be up on their toes in the
beginning, a lot of them start with a heel-rock, knee-bend, back-arch but they are all up on
their toes when they go up to hit.
Check any pro in the backscratch position and what you’ll see is this:
At the instant the toss has reached its peak, and the racket is hanging upside down, they’ll
be up on their toes with the front leg extended, ready to crack the whip, as Samantha Stosur is doing. What a lot of amateurs do at the beginner and intermediate levels that causes
them problems is this: They serve from a flat front foot and a stiff front leg. No good. The
flat front foot is never good, unless you are a teacher or some other lazy kind of creature,
and the stiff front leg is only good if you got to it by means bending and extending.
A simple drill that solves a lot of problems on the serve is the “tippy toe” drill. It gets
you going up and it gets you going forward. Put a ball under the heel of your front foot and
never let that heel touch the ground.
Then it’s: lean forward, toss, bend, extend, and land. The left foot doesn’t go anywhere.
That’s your anchor. The back foot lands in the court. (Jumping became legal in 1961.)
Twist IT!
The four sources of power on the serve are: Shift, Twist, Lift, and Wrist. What’s that
mean?
Shift
Your 100, 200, or 300 pounds start out behind the baseline and wind up in front of the
baseline, that’s linear weight shift.
Twist
If you are a rightie, your hips and shoulders, which are facing the right fence when you
go into the hit, are facing the left fence when you finish, that’s torso twist.
Lift
There are 3 components to “lift.” One, when your knees bend and extend to go up to
get the ball, you have leg lift. When your racket goes from the upside down backscratch
position to the rightside up hit position, you have racket lift. And when your back arches
and then bows, you have body lift.
Wrist
When you crack the whip at the top, the kinetic chain is complete. Shift, Twist, Lift, and
Wrist.

Cerveza Run
The sun was shining on a beautiful Saturday morning at the recent Dobson
Ranch Cerveza Run with about 125 people in attendance. Runners, walkers, joggers, scooters and strollers headed out on the two mile path along beautiful Lake
1 at Los Altos. There was a festive atmosphere as the participants returned and
were serenaded with lively music by the Mariachi Luna de Mexico band. The first
runner back in lightning speed was Zachary Robbins, but at the end everyone was
a winner with cool refreshing Cervezas for the adults, chips, salsa and guacamole
from Rositas, and chips and salsa from Macayos. But that’s not all! We couldn’t
have a celebration like this without piñatas! There were treat filled piñatas for all
ages smacked open by some pretty strong Ranch residents. If you missed this year’s
event, be sure to grab the fun next May, but in the meantime, check out even more
exciting upcoming events in this issue of the Ranchers’ Roundup.

Dobson Ranch Retirees Club
By Dick Krouse
President
With summer heat coming many of our retires have left or will leave soon
for cooler climates. This has got to be one of the best benefits of being retired.
There can be some drawbacks for leaving too early. Our past president Jack Armstrong found
over a foot of snow when he arrived at his place in Colorado. When I asked his wife why she
didn’t go with Jack this early, she said “Do you think I am crazy?”. Evidently Jack doesn’t mind
the snow and loves his place in Colorado. Have fun Jack.
As permanent residents of Arizona, my wife and I can’t leave for the summer, but we can
plan some trips to cooler places and use the pool which is finally getting warm enough to jump
in. After 15 years here, we have learned to adjust to the heat and enjoy lots of summer activities
especially in the early mornings and evenings. I have given up saying it is dry heat. When we
reach 110, it doesn’t matter if it is dry heat or not. We also like the low humidity versus the wet
air and all of the bugs it can bring. Where ever you all are, I hope you enjoy the summer.
The RoundUp does such a good job of listing all of the activities on the Ranch, that I won’t
bore you with repeating them. I would remind all retirees and other interested parties that we
don’t have our regular monthly meeting in July. We have a July social at La Casita at 6:30 pm
on July 6th. It is a pot luck desert social. Bring a desert to share and any drinks you might like
for yourself except alcoholic drinks. Hope to see you there.
Kiwanis Club Forming at Dobson Ranch
Kiwanis, a service organization, is celebrating 100
years of “Serving the Children” in 2015. Dobson High
Key Club is a vibrant student service club yielding young
leaders year after year. Whether it is university level, high
school, middle schools or elementary schools, Kiwanis
sponsors clubs for all youth to grow in leadership and
community service.
Yes, there once was a Kiwanis club in Dobson Ranch. A new concept in Kiwanis is
directed towards the Young Professional who wishes to give a little time and energy back
to the community they so enjoy and live or work within. A Kiwanis club could serve many
purposes for Dobson Ranch residents and business people. It’s almost like an extended family
who pool their idea resources, trade friendships, identify with youth of the community and
provide unique service where needed.

Fishing Club
By Ed Ricci
Our Dobson Ranch lake water temperatures have finally hit the 80 degree mark. So,
time for another primer on bass and water temp. Fish are cold blooded. Their body
temperature and more importantly, their metabolism is controlled by water temperature.
The warmer the water, the higher their metabolism. Bass are most active between about
60 degrees and 75 degrees. Below about 50 degrees, their metabolism slows down, causing
them to eat infrequently. I do not believe our winter Ranch water temps got below 50.
Above about 80 degrees, low dissolved oxygen levels in the water place them under stress.
Dead baitfish may be an indication of low oxygen levels. So keep your eyes open in the
heat of the summer, and report to the HOA of you view any struggling fish. Our shallow
Ranch lakes provide plusses and minuses. Since they are so shallow, the entire water
column gets heated up. There are no cooler haunts for the fish to retreat. The upside is
that when the wind blows, our lakes get fairly well oxygenated.
Fishing has been good in our lakes. We are catching our fish in different time windows
and conditions. I was fishing the other day with my good friend Jeff McClure. We fished
for about 2 hours without a bite. Then we wandered into one of our many spots on the
lake. We had a double hook-up- me on a jerk bait; Jeff on a shakey head grub. I got one
more on the jerk bait; then Jeff spanked me on that spot- as he caught 4 more on his rig.
The point of the story is not to declare Jeff a better fisherman than me (because he is
not) ;-), but that based on changing conditions bass can put on the feed bag at any timeand almost like turning on a light switch. We think this change in activity was due to
increasing cloud cover and the wind picking up.
Happy fishing and boating to all.

Stay Out of the Hot Seat
By Kimberly Zavacki and Amber Balmer
Veterinary Technicians at Dobson Ranch Animal Hospital
Arizona is going to be reaching the triple digit temperatures
soon so it is time to be more cautious when planning outdoor
activities.
Every year, many pets suffer heatstroke from being left in closed cars. Even as few
as minutes in a closed car in the Arizona heat can cause heatstroke in pets. Contrary
to popular belief, cracking a window is not sufficient to protecting your furbaby from
the extreme outdoor heat. Even cracking a window and parking in a shady area, the
temperature in the car can still soar quickly to 160 degrees on a 70 degree day.
Pets can also suffer from heat stroke if they exercise too much on hot days or if they are
unable to get out of the sun and into a shady area. Also keep in mind, if the pavement is
too hot for you to touch with bare feet, it is too hot for your furbaby. Remember if you are
going to take your furbaby out to play, early morning or late evenings are the best times for
outdoor activities. Keep lots of water on hand for you, your children, and your furkids.
If you notice your furbaby salivating, excessive panting, in obvious discomfort or
restless bring him/her into a veterinary clinic or emergency hospital immediately. As
these symptoms progress, a pet can begin vomiting, having diarrhea, become disoriented,
or even begin to have seizures. If left untreated, these symptoms can lead to loss of
consciousness and even death.
Think of how happy your furbaby will be to greet you when you return home instead
of sitting in a hot car. So commit to keeping cool this summer and always think of your
furbabies health and welfare.

Letter to the Editor
Mother Earth;
My Contribution
Is So Small…
By Wilhelmina Wosinska, Ph.D.
Gardeners who earn their living
in Arizona by cleaning our yards
and streets use gasoline-propelled
blowers that create dust, emit fuels,
and make a horrifying of noise.
It seems that individually this
poisoning of environment is not
substantial but all these individual
effects get accumulated. I am afraid
that – what environmentalists
predict on the basis of scientific
research - if we do not return to
using traditional ways of cleaning
like rakes and brooms, in a relative
close future we will we will have to
sit at our yards in protective masks
(as they do in some cities in China),
and wear earplugs as well.
Justification for using this
equipment is the same on part of
the yard owners. It is faster and
cheaper and they do not think that
it makes too much harm. In other
words: my contribution is so small
mantra serves as justification for
them as well (I say them but I am in
the same league, unfortunately.)
Why don’t we pioneer the use of
traditional ways of cleaning instead
of machinery that is destroying our
environment? I am convinced that
Mother Earth will be grateful to us.
