“EMMA”
Sundays, beginning Jan. 24, 9 pm
A fiercely funny four-hour adaptation of
Jane Austen’s delightful love story stars Romola Garai (Atonement) as a young woman whose attempts to play
Cupid go disastrously awry. Rich, beautiful and hopelessly self-deluded, Emma Woodhouse can’t help meddling in
the romantic life of others while neglecting her own. Jonny Lee Miller (“Endgame,” “Eli Stone”) stars as Emma’s
stalwart friend, Mr. Knightley, with Michael Gambon (“Cranford,” Harry Potter) as her doom-obsessed father.
THIS EMOTIONAL LIFE
Monday-Wednesday, Jan. 4-6, 8 pm
This three-part series explores ways to improve social relationships,
learn to cope with depression and anxiety and become more
positive, resilient individuals. The series host, Harvard psychologist
and best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness, Professor
Daniel Gilbert, talks with experts about the latest science on what
makes us “tick” and how we can find support for the emotional issues we all face. Each episode weaves the compelling personal stories of ordinary people and the latest scientific research, along with revealing comments from
celebrities such as Chevy Chase, Larry David, Alanis Morissette, Robert Kennedy Jr. and Richard Gere.

Dear Viewers,
Some Answers
What are AETN and PBS doing to compete in the new
media marketplace where viewers want to see content
when, where and how they want?
AETN and PBS are doing a lot. Check out the new online
video player featured on AETN’s Web site to stream
episodes of most PBS shows. Early this year you will also be able to stream more
and more locally produced AETN programs on the same video player. AETN also
has hundreds of clips available on the aetntv and PBS YouTube channel.
What determines success for individual programs?
Ratings are one consideration, but so are a number of other factors, including
the artistic merit of the programming we broadcast. For AETN, one of the most
important metrics is the impact our content has on our viewers. The impact of
AETN’s outreach around the Ken Burns’ series ”The War” and “The National
Parks: America’s Best Idea” are just two examples. We are preserving nearly 600
oral histories of Arkansas World War II veterans, and AETN’s free parks Passport
Program has been a popular way to encourage Arkansans to visit national and
state parks around our state.
We continue to help promote lifelong learning for Arkansans of all ages and to
assist teachers and students throughout the state. Beyond formal instruction,
professional development opportunities and programs like NOVA that strengthen
teaching in many classrooms, we note one truism: every program on television,
whether public, not-for-profit or commercial teaches something. The question is
what does it teach?
When AETN goes into a fundraising period, why do you often present different material from the regular fare?
It's true that some of the programming we air during pledge drives is different
from our core schedule because it's meant to serve a different purpose. Pledge
programs exist to encourage people to act to make that call to their station and
support local public television. Lots of research about what people like and don't
like about pledge programming, as well as what works and what doesn't, is why
you'll see programs as varied as "Brain Health," doo-wop bands or Celtic Woman
concerts during pledge periods.
Remember that PBS and AETN are not-for-profit organizations. People send checks
voluntarily to support the kind of programming they like to see on the air. AETN
receives some important and critical funding from the state for education, basic operation and distribution (accounting for about 40 percent of our funding base) but
the general audience programs, much of AETN’s local production efforts and most
of the children’s fare are possible because of contributions to the AETN Foundation.
For that, we are unbelievably grateful. Thank you.

Dream
Dr. William Downs, Jr. AETN Commissioner
For 11 years, Dr. Bill Downs has
proudly served on the Arkansas
Educational Television Network
Commission.
Since 1966, Downs has worked
at Ouachita Baptist University
where he has guided the Mass
Communications Department
from courses focused on print
media to a diversified program
that now includes journalism, advertising, public relations,
telecommunications and new media, with a heavy emphasis
on writing skills. Downs now serves as Chairman of OBU’s
Mass Communication Department.
Downs’ commitment to education is one reason why being
involved with Arkansas’s only statewide television network is
so important to him.
“AETN is important in not only what we see but in what
we may not see, as in the case of the Arkansas IDEAS Web
site, which has provided more than 100,000 credit hours
for professional development to Arkansas teachers,” Downs
said. “AETN offers a matchless mix of programs that provide
learning opportunities.”
Downs has been named the 1996 Distinguished Educator of
the Year by the Arkansas Advertising Federation; been named
Outstanding Faculty Member by the Ouachita Student Senate
twice; received the Journalism Educator Award from the
Arkansas Press Association; and received several awards from
Columbia Scholastic Press Association in New York City, including the Gold Key award and Gold and Silver Crown awards
as the former adviser of the Ouachitonian yearbook and the
James Frederick Paschal Award.
Downs is a 1949 graduate of Batesville High School, holds
a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Journalism from the
University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and Master of Arts and
Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Missouri
at Columbia. He is also the author of “The Fighting Tigers:
the Untold Stories Behind the Names on the Ouachita Baptist
University WWII Memorial” (University of Arkansas Press/
Phoenix International, 2004).
Downs was first appointed to the commission in 1998 and has
served as both chair and vice-chair.
“I hope people gain from AETN a deeper sense of pride in
the immense variety of people, places and things we have in
Arkansas,” Downs said.

He has been portrayed in countless
movies and television shows by some of
Hollywood’s greatest actors, including
Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart and, more
recently, Kevin Costner, but these popular fictions belie the
complexities and flaws of a man whose life is a lens on
politics, justice and economic opportunity on the American
frontier. Shortly after his death in 1929, distressed Americans
down on their luck transformed Wyatt Earp into a folk hero: a
central figure in the American narrative of how the west was
won, a man who took control of his own destiny.

momentous and moving events in world history.
The world’s largest democracy and a rising economic giant, India
is now as well known in the U.S. for its mastery of computer
technology and its business and industrial strength as it is for its
many-armed gods and its spiritual traditions.
Like other great civilizations, India has renewed itself several

While moving at high speed into the modern world, India is still in
touch with her ancient past.

This month Exploring Arkansas features something a bit
different. Videographer Michad Holliday and I spend
24 hours at Heifer Global Village which simulates
the real-life struggles that people across the planet
face daily. During our 24 hour stay we built a fire,
cooked a simple meal of rice and vegetables and
slept in a “generic urban slum”. Besides an urban
slum, the Village portrays living conditions in Guatemala,
Thailand, Zambia, Appalachia, and a refugee camp. Heifer
International is a non-profit organization that operates
Heifer Global Village and creates sustainable development
by donating livestock to impoverished families around the
world. You don’t want to miss this program and if you are
interested in Heifer Global Village or Heifer International
visit them at http://www.heifer.org/. This special episode
of Exploring Arkansas airs Monday, January 4 at 6:30 pm.
NATURE Wild Balkans
Sunday, January 31, 2010, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
NATURE visits the natural wonders of Montenegro’s Lake Skadar.
The fantastic landscape seems to be taken from Tolkien’s Lord
of the Rings . This is not Middle Earth; rather it is middle Europe
– the Balkans, a dazzling world of lush forests, vast wetlands,
deep chasms and unique wildlife. Lake Skadar is the largest lake
at Balkan Peninsula, famous for its diversity of flora and fauna.

The Education Department at AETN is responsible for delivering professional development both face-to-
face and online to Arkansas educators across the state. Our services range from providing Early Childhood
workshops and programs to caregivers of young children all the way through our Adult Education programs
that do similar trainings for adults interested in pursuing their own educational goals. For several years
now, the department’s primary objective has been housing and maintaining IDEAS, the state’s only online,
free professional development service for Arkansas educators.

A Night of Thunder
On Wednesday, November 18, at Robinson Center
Auditorium-Music Hall in Little Rock, the AETN
Foundation was proud to present Celtic Thunder to rave
reviews and standing ovations as they presented songs from
their new CD entitled Take Me Home. From the solo to
the ensemble pieces, each note was sung to perfection and
enhanced by the Celtic Concert Orchestra who brought the
music to life.
Celtic Thunder is comprised of five male soloists who
made their official debut in August of 2007 at the
Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland. Known for
their dramatic lighting, eclectic song choices with bits
of humor thrown in, Celtic Thunder has been sweeping
through North America since their premiere two and
half years ago.
After the concert at Robinson Center Auditorium, people
lined up for an exclusive Meet and Greet session with two
of the stars from the show; Keith Harkin and Ryan Kelley
graciously signed autographs and posed for pictures with
excited and happy fans. Everyone at AETN wishes them
well on their third American tour and hopes to see them
again soon!
We couldn’t do it without our Volunteers!
AETN and the AETN Foundation wish to thank
everyone who volunteered and all the businesses
who donated food during the December membership
campaign. Your support helped make our campaign
a success. Our three annual membership campaigns
are the single biggest source of programming funds,
raising over half a million dollars annually. The

Education
Television
Network has long been a favorite not for profit organization of our family. With
its 44 years of service, AETN is Arkansas’s only statewide public television
station. Through its services, it touches all of our lives if we let it. Not only is
there educational value in their programming, which we all want for our children,
grandchildren, and ourselves, but there is also entertainment of the highest caliber
anywhere. The programming is well thought out and delivered to each of us. My
grandchildren - ages 10, 7, 7 and 5 – certainly enjoy the children’s programs while
Sharon Heflin
AETN Corporate Sponsor and Ambassador Circle Member
not realizing they are actually learning. Sid the Science Kid,
Thomas and Friends, Kid Fitness, Bob the Builder, and Curious
George are just a few of their favorites. I must admit that I have
learned quite a bit myself from watching with them. I guess that
just proves that you are never too old to learn.
“Many companies in Arkansas like ours
support AETN and its mission because
we live here, we work here, we raise our
children here, and we have a responsibility
to make Arkansas the best it can be.”
Education, as you would expect from its name, is a key
component of AETN’s programming whether it is focused on our children or adults. The primetime programming varies widely
from health-related programs to public affairs, and programs providing cultural insights and exploration of historic events. My
family - especially my mother and daddy - was especially touched by the documentary In Their Own Words. And my children
and grandchildren were well educated about World II and the part that their grandfather and great grandfather played, along
with thousands of other men and women, to keep us free. Art and culture are highlighted through AETN programming with the
goal of inspiring people of all ages to exchange ideas and explore issues through reading, or experience new music, or learn
more about the state they live in. The 2009 presentation of Arkansas’s National and State Parks: Their Past, Our Present, Our
Future is an example of reminding us of what we have and to appreciate it as it deserves.
While the television programming itself is second to none, there is also so very much more to AETN - like the programs
offered to schools and other groups around our state. The hands on experiences offered to children, as well as adults, are
an invaluable learning activity. The resources available through AETN range from online professional development courses for
educators, educational web sites, instructional television programs, online virtual tours, links to resources, workshops, and
educational programs – in fact the AETN Scholar channel broadcasts instructional programming 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
We, as Arkansans, are proud of the work that goes on here in our state to improve and enhance the programs that are
available to children as well as adults. Being an Ambassadors Circle member and having our company, Bird and Bear
Medical, Inc. as a corporate sponsor of AETN has not only given us great satisfaction but has helped broadened the wealth of
programming available to our state. Many companies in Arkansas like ours support AETN and its mission because we live here,
we work here, we raise our children here, and we have a responsibility to make Arkansas the best it can be. AETN is helping
to make that mission come true. For more information on how you can help with the AETN Foundation’s mission, call Karen
Cooper, at 1-800-662-2386, or email her at [email protected].
