Christ Set Us Free
“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm”
Galatians 5:1
As we celebrate our Independence Day once again this summer our thoughts automatically turn to freedom. Indeed the Fourth of July is all about liberty, freedom and our
human rights. However freedom is much more than just patriotic American fervor, civil
liberties, the pursuit of happiness, and justice for all.
What Paul is writing about in his letter to the Galatians is freedom from slavery and
bondage to sin, freedom from religious legalism, freedom from the curse and penalty of
sin (death), and, ultimately, freedom from the very power of the devil himself!
Peter echoes Paul’s teaching when he writes: “Act as free people, and do not use
your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bond-slaves of God.” I Peter 2:16

You see, when Christ set us free FROM all of the evils that surround us and enslave us,
He was setting us free FOR His divine purposes and plans. We are not allowed to use
our freedom as a means to inhibit or curb someone else's freedom, nor are we allowed
to use our freedom as an excuse for us to do bad or wicked things. So, then, what good
is it to be free? If we’re not free to do whatever we want, then what do we get to do?
There are many answers I could give to this question, but let me focus on just two. First
of all, we are free to love God with our whole heart, mind, strength and soul. What are
the things in your life that keep you from doing that? Whatever they are, Christ has
come to set you free from them so that you can truly love God with your whole self!
Secondly, Christ has set us free to love each other with the same kind of love He has for
us. Do you love all the people in your life with as much love and in the same way as Jesus loves you? Probably not. Why not? Again there are many circumstances in each of
our lives that keep us from loving others the way Jesus loves us.
That’s why Jesus set us free! He wants to loosen the ropes and
chains that bind us and keep us from being loving people, and fill
us up with His love so that we can truly love each other.
This is just the beginning of the list of freedoms for which Christ
has set us free. So, live as free people...people who are free to
do the will of God!

Vacation Bible School is just a few short weeks
away (July 25-28 from 6-8PM). If you have a child
between 4yrs old and 6th grade (completed in the
2016 school year), please make sure your child is
registered and joining us for another great time
(registration form is on the next page or can be
found in the church lobby). That includes any child
in your life that would benefit from this program
(neighbor, grandchild, child’s classmate, etc.). It’s a
great time to reach out to family and friends who
may not have a church and/or, even more
importantly, may not know Jesus.
Adults, there’s a sign-up out in the
church lobby for you to help too.
Don’t miss out on the blessings of
working with our children and
helping them grow in their faith.
Mark Wayne will be leading our
worship time during the 10:15AM
service on Sunday, July 10th.
Mark is a steel guitar player that
used to be a part of the gospel
group Harbor Lighthouse. Invite
your friends and family and
come and be blessed.
