o Our rigorous six-week Summer Institute and Saturday school-year program prepares middle-school students to enter, thrive in and graduate on-time from college-prep high schools and enroll in four-year colleges and universities.
We also support parents as they navigate their students’ educational choices.
o Our College Bound program prepares high-school students for the challenges of college and career, with advanced
academic guidance, comprehensive college-readiness support, assistance with college selection, application and
enrollment, and experiential learning.
o Our student-to-student model engages outstanding older students as tutors, mentors and role models.
Breakthrough Miami is HIGH EXPECTATIONS, HIGH ASPIRATIONS …AND FUN!
National research tells us that…
o Low-income students, even those who are high-achievers in elementary school, are more likely to drop out of high school than their more affluent peers. o Students from low-income backgrounds lose 4 to 5 months in reading skills each summer, and the loss is cumulative.
o Nationally, just 26% of low-income students with above-average scores in 8th grade graduate from college, fewer than more affluent students with poorer scores.
o While the percentage of all students attending college in the U.S. has grown dramatically in the past three decades, the enrollment gap between students from low-income back grounds and their affluent peers has widened.
Who is a Breakthrough scholar?
o Participation in any pre-college program doubles the odds for enrollment in a 4-year college by-low income students, and more intensive programs show a larger effect on bachelor degree completion.
Who is a Breakthrough
Teaching Fellow?
We recruit from more than 75 Title 1 schools in Miami-Dade County for motivated students
who may lack access to challenging opportunities to help them achieve their academic
potential. Risk factors among Breakthrough Miami’s 2014 entering class:

Our program is based on studies that demonstrate:
o Increased attendance in out-of-school
programs improves academic achievement, and the longer students are involved, the greater the benefit.
o High-quality enrichment programs help students improve social and other skills in addition to academics, skills that are key to health and well-being. o Cross-age peer mentoring provides significant benefits, both academically and socially, for both mentors and mentees. 86%

Our History
Breakthrough Miami, originally known as Summerbridge, was launched at Ransom Everglades School
in 1991 to help talented middle-school students
from economically disadvantaged backgrounds
overcome the racial, cultural and economic barriers
to academic achievement. Its first summer program
enrolled 40 students. Over the years, the model
added school-year programs, and additional
services for high-school students.
In 2007, a five-year, $3.25 million grant from the
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation fostered
the expansion to additional sites and 1,000 students. Today, Breakthrough Miami is the largest of
27 programs nationwide that comprise the
Breakthrough Collaborative, which was
established in San Francisco in 1978.

ENROLLED IN COLLEGE
In 2014, our programs enrolled 1,150 Scholars in grades 5 through12 from all over Miami-Dade.
Our eight-year, tuition-free program cultivates a love of learning and strong community values. Scholars develop
the academic tools and peer relationships they need to achieve their most ambitious goals in life.
Why Breakthrough?
100%
Our Vision is that all motivated, under-resourced students of
Miami-Dade County will have access to excellent educational
opportunities, graduate from high school and attend college.
Breakthrough Miami provides an academic enrichment program that
uses a student-teaching-students model to make that vision a reality.
