July Troop Meetings--they're all about Tomahawk!
Scouts, a portion of every meeting in July will be dedicated to
preparing for our biggest outing of the year: Tomahawk! Please do your best to come to each of
those meetings. Also, keep an eye on your email all month for any last-minute changes or new
information.
On June 28, Scouts selected their tent mates. Be sure to tell Mr. Brost if you have a ~10'x10' tent
that you can use at Camp.
Scouts and parents, remember that Bear Training is required for EVERYONE who attends or
visits Camp for ANY length of time, including parents and siblings.

TOMAHAWK 2016 - last-minute details
When: Saturday, August 6 to Saturday, August 13
Base Cost: $272 + travel and incidentals (some programs/activities will have an additional fee)
If you haven’t done so, schedule your Scout's physical (and yours, if you'll be at Tomahawk for more than 72 hours).
Be sure to take along Part C of the Annual Health and Medical Record

Verify that your Scout’s name is on the form and that the health care provider signs and dates it!
ALL visitors to Tomahawk must take Bear training prior to camp, regardless of the length of stay.
All visitors must sign in at the Welcome Center upon arrival at Tomahawk
The Troop meeting on August 2, will be a very important one. First, Mr. Brost will meet with the Tomahawk Leadership
Core--that’s the SPL, ASPL, and the Patrol Leaders--to solidify expectations and duties at Camp. And second, this night
will be the final Tomahawk Supplies Preparation. We’ll spend time in the Garage, inventorying Patrol Boxes, cooking supplies, etc. We’ll also look through the First Aid kit to make sure it’s completely stocked and current.
Remember that the base cost of Tomahawk must be paid in full prior to Camp; Mr. Ginzburg
will bill you through your Scout Account. Council Camperships might still be available;
contact Mrs. Zurales ASAP if you need help paying for camp.
ANNUAL PHYSICAL REMINDER
Remember that BSA now requires a YEARLY physical for ALL Scouts and
adults, regardless of age (Parts A/B/B). In order to attend a camp that's
longer than 72 hours, you also need Part C. For most members of Troop 171,
that will be Tomahawk or Northern Tier. Please remember to schedule your and
your Scout's physical and get the paperwork done early.

... Scoutmaster Comment …
We have a busy next few weeks as we finalize all of the aspects of our upcoming Northern Tier High Adventure Canoe Trip
and our Summer Camp at Tomahawk. For Tomahawk, we will be selecting tent mates shortly. Each tent must be
approximately 10 x 10 in size. There will be 2 Scouts in each tent. The only exception is when a Patrol has an odd number of
Scouts in it. In that scenario, one (and only one) of the tents can house 3 scouts. For Northern Tier, tent arrangements will be
handled during our arrival shakedown.
A reminder, everyone who comes to Tomahawk or going to Northern Tier (adults & Scouts alike) must complete Bear training.
If you missed out on the training session, you must make arrangements with me to complete this training before we depart for
either trip. In addition, Youth Protection training is required for all adults attending outings. Therefore, all adults who will
attend Tomahawk for any length of time must also complete Youth Protection training. Please contact Mrs.
Zurales (our Training Chair) to complete this requirement. If this training in not completed and recorded, you
will be unable to come to camp.
It is amazing how fast our summers go! Believe it or not, the Youth Annual Planning meeting is fast
approaching in August! That said, it’s time to start thinking now on what you’d like your upcoming 2016 –
2017 year to look like! Start gathering trip and outing ideas and information for things that you would like to
consider adding to your annual favorites. It’s up to all of you to make it an awesome Scouting year for
everybody!

NEWS FROM AROUND THE TROOP

Ezekiel, Sara and Mrs. Town represented Troop 171 at the American Legion Memorial Day event on
May 30. Thank you for honoring those who served.

On June 4, Mr. Ginzburg and Mr. Sullivan transported 8 Scouts to Spring Camporee and Merit Badge Fair at Phillippo
Scout Camp. Matthew DeWitt and Joe Matton worked on the Sustainability
Merit Badge. Thomas DeWitt, Daniel Ginzburg, Andres Kainz, Alex Lopez,
Martin Schmidt, and Frank Sullivan all worked on the Cooking Merit Badge.
It was a successful day trip! Thank you Mrs. Solheim for arranging this
outing.

Thank you to the 18 Scouts and family members who showed up to help
Peace Church with yard cleanup on Saturday, June 18. The following people
all earned service hour credits as they did yard work, helped take down a tree,
and painted a railing. They worked a total of 36 hours! Thank you to Mrs.
Solheim for organizing this event and for providing the donuts! Thank
you to the following people for spending time making Peace Church look
so nice: Matthew and Thomas DeWitt, Daniel Ginzburg, Aidan, Keighvin
and Mr. and Mrs. Lee, Caden Nicholson, Conner Ruch, Martin Schmidt
and Mr. Schmidt, Nikolas and Mr. Shouler, Mrs. Town, Orsen, Magnus,
and Mr. and Mrs. Young, and Mrs. Zurales.

At the PLC on Tuesday, June 21, SPL Ben Alva and ASPL Tyler
Solheim, along with Scoutmaster Mr. Brost, welcomed: Senior Patrol:
Frank Sullivan; Ice Phoenix: Brayden Bruins, and Liam Harris; Liberty
Keepers: Daniel Ginzburg, Alex Lynch, Conner Ruch, and Martin Schmidt;
Phantom Ninjas: Brandon Torralba; and Warriors: Ethan Tracy. Scouts,
remember each Patrol must be represented at each PLC. If the PL (Patrol
Leader) cannot attend, he must have his APL (Assistant Patrol Leader)
present. If neither can attend, the PL is responsible to have someone from
his Patrol attend. In addition, Scouts who are using their leadership
position for rank advancement must attend 4 of the 6 PLCs during their
tenure in order to receive leadership credit.

Tyler Solhiem’s Eagle project has begun. There are two parking lot medians to
clear. Thank you to those who worked to help Tyler show his leadership. Great
job Tyler!

Charlie Cruse, Isaiah and Ms. Pfeffer, Caden Nicholson, and Rudy and Mr. Simpson went on the Namekagon canoe trip
from June 24 to 26,. This trip included 35 miles of canoeing, lots of wildlife, some sore muscles, and a monsoon like
rain storm shortly after finding their campsite and setting up
the tents. Thankfully, there were few mosquitoes.
Scouts also attempted swamping a canoe and
doing a water recovery on a nearby lake. They
learned it is harder than it looks and might take
some extra work.

Adult Leaders Needed!
We would like to encourage every parent to become actively involved in their son’s Boy Scout
journey. With your involvement, your Scout will have a successful experience. With your
involvement, everyone wins – let’s start with YOU:
 As an active parent, you will spend quality, meaningful time with your son and his friends at
Troop meetings and Scout outings.
 You get to help instill the values that you feel are important for your son to attain.
 You will also get to meet and bond with other fantastic parents who share the same unique
goals and values that the Scouting program provides.
 You learn first-hand what is required in the Boy Scout program and will develop an entire new level of respect
for the boys who are successful in this program.
 You will develop a more powerful bond with your son that most parents only dream of having.
How your son wins:
 Your son will get to enjoy far more outings with an active parent. These are unique experiences that are
difficult to find in any other program.
 Your son will learn valuable leadership and life skills and will be able to put those into practice.
 Your son will set goals and will work hard to achieve them.
 Your son will become more confident and self reliant, while at the same time, develop a respectful
relationship with you and other adult leaders.
 Your son will carry on the tradition of being an involved/engaged parent when he has children of his own.
How the Troop wins:
The Troop will survive and thrive with many active adult leaders. Please consider joining BSA as an adult leader and
become active in the Troop. Find out ways you can help. We recognize that everyone is busy, and
everyone has commitments outside of Scouting. This is true in varying degrees for every adult volunteer in the Troop. So even if you can't commit to a weekend campout, there are dozens of other
ways to help out, and when one adult takes on a small task, that lightens the load for the adults who
are able to commit to more. All Parents are expected to help in some way.
Without your help, this Troop may not be able to survive.

We have several adult volunteer positions that are open. If you are interested in filling or helping with one of these, please talk to Mrs. Solheim:

It's also that time of year where the boys will plan their annual calendar of activities.
When that occurs, I will also need parents to attend the adult planning meeting
on Sunday, September 11. I will be looking for many adult volunteers to coordinate outings and fill other roles that are needed to make the year successful. We
need a minimum of two adults for every activity or we need to cancel those activities. A coordinator of an activity does not need to attend, but must ensure that two
adults are attending and all the minimum requirements for the activity are met (such
as training requirements, health forms, etc.). There is something for every parent to
help with in Troop 171 so let us know your talents and we will get you involved!
Did you know?
With parent involvement, a Scout is more
likely to stay in Scouting and reap the many
benefits of the program. The Scout, whose
parent is actively involved, is more likely to
attain his goals for advancement.
Parents are encouraged to become actively
involved in the Troop. Becoming a
registered Committee Member or Assistant
Scoutmaster is a welcomed option. There
are also many other opportunities for you to
make a difference. We are always in need of
parents to volunteer for event planning,
transportation or chaperoning. Perhaps you
can become a Merit Badge Counselor. All
Troop 171 parents (registered or not) are
expected to help out in some capacity.

Scouts and adults, now is the time to start thinking about what activities and outings you've enjoyed in the past and want to repeat. What
NEW activities you'd like to try? This is your best chance of the year to have a say in all the activities that end up on the calendar for
2015-2016. All scouts are invited to help plan the calendar from October 2016 through October 2017 Pizza and beverages will be
provided. Bring your ideas for what you want to do at your meetings and day/weekend adventures.

Has the Troop gone on an outing that you really didn't enjoy, or that could have been better? Then this is your chance to speak up! As an
aside, many Troops don't have Youth Annual Planning meetings: the outings on their yearly calendar are set by the adult Troop leaders.
Don't bypass this opportunity to ensure that Troop 171 is truly boy-led.

A Message from Sam Norman
Hey you guys its me! I wanted to say thank you, thank you, and thank you for all your love, compassion, and support through
the dark times I've had so far. I really enjoyed they candy gift basket you guys sent me and its been put to great use. I just
wanted to announce that I'll be trying to go to more of the scout meetings and doing more to help out around the church now
that I am feeling better. Also feel free to contact me anytime throughout the summer I really could use the company! My

Scout Handbook Reminder
Scouts, if you're not yet First Class, remember to bring your Scout Handbook to every Troop meeting, and on
every outing, so that Troop Guides (or occasionally ASMs) can sign off on advancement requirements as you
complete them. Also, be sure to record each camping trip, and any service hours, on the pages at the back of the
Handbook. Troop Guides, when you sign and date a requirement for a Scout who's working toward Tenderfoot,
Second Class, or First Class, don’t forget to include the year.

Merit Badge Reminder
Through participation in the Merit Badge program, a Scout acquires the kind of self-confidence that comes
only from overcoming obstacles to achieve a goal. Instruction is offered in everything from animal science

interpersonal skills. A Scout interested in a specific Merit Badge must first obtain a Merit Badge book, fill out the Merit
Badge card, locate a counselor and obtain the signature of the Scoutmaster prior to beginning the Merit Badge. Upon
completing the requirements, the Scout returns the Merit Badge card, signed by the counselor, to the Scoutmaster for his
signature. The Merit Badge card is then given to the Advancement Chairperson to record and submit the information.

Next Roundtable: Thursday, August 18. After two months off for good behavior, Roundtable returns in
August --BUT-- it'll be one week later than normal, to accommodate the 9 Troops that are at Summer Camp.
(Hey--that's us!). The August Roundtable is the "Cornfeed and Program Kickoff" and it typically starts at 6:00 PM.
In September, Roundtable will return to its "second-Thursday-of-the-month-at-7:00 PM" schedule.
