had morning tea with Kay Peno who is the
Director of Schools Lake Macquarie East. This is
the third time Belmont High School has been
involved in this program which is designed to
develop leadership skills in students and it is
hoped that BHS can be involved in the
program in the future.

LANGUAGES
Miss Gibbs recently took part in the Primary Enrichment Program, offerin g Year 5 students from our
partner schools the opportunity to learn a little about Japanese language and culture.
Once again the highlight of the short prog ram was having Eri Takeuchi, a Japanese assistant
teacher, come and teach the students how to do traditional calligraphy using ink and brushes. This
year, in addition to learning how to write the Kanji symbols for Japan & peace, the students asked
how to write the symbols for sushi and origami, two of their favourite Japanese things! Eri was very
impressed how confident the students were in introducing themselves in Japanese after only one
lesson on self -introductions.
Th e stu de n ts also e nj oye d le arni n g th e nu mbe r s i n Japan e se by playin g bi n go, maki n g ori gami
animals whilst learning the words for dog and cat, and finding out about the fast and crowded
trains in Japan. A big thankyou to Monique Rose from the Year 10 elective class who came along
on the last lesson to help out and talk to the students about why she enjoys studying languages at
Belmont High.
Congratulations to the primary students for conducting themselves in such a positive manner and
being so enthusiastic about learning as much as they c ould about Japanese language and culture.
Miss Gibbs looks forward to seeing them again in the Japanese classroom when they come to high
school.

SRC
Student Principal for a Day
The „Student Principal for a Day‟ project was held on 3 rd of June and this is a national event to
encourage leadership skills in high sch ool students. Only two SRC members can be selected for this
project and this year Charlie Haigh and Kai Bates were chosen by a random selection process. It is
encouraging that so many students wanted to be involved in this year‟s event and students spent
the day with Mr. Robinson observing the activities of a school leader in an educational setting. The
students have written an account of their day to share with everyone.
Hi, my name is Charlie Haigh and today I got to experience the life of being a Principal. We
st arted off with a uniform check and if students were in the right unif orm they would get a lolly and
if t hey weren’t they woul dn’t. T hen we sat down and t alked to Mrs Peno, the School Education
Director. She is the head of the Lake Macquarie East publ ic school s and she was a very kind and
well spoken lady. Then after the chat we headed off for a morning t ea that the Special Ed class
made for us and it was very delicious. Next we went to Year 12 Biology class and we listened to
their l esson f or 20 m inutes or so then we came back and we got given some gifts by Mrs Peno and
Mr Robinson. T hese gifts included a hat and a pen and a pencil case.
This was a very well planned day and it was very fun. Next year I recommend Year 7 and Year 8
members to sign u p because you will have a ball.
I, Kai Bates, was one of the two lucky students who got t o experience being a school principal for
a day. Mr Robinson gave me a cl ear understanding of what his job involves and he was highly
inf ormat ive and I f elt very much welcomed by him on the day. Mr Robinson was happy t o answer
questions and gave a det ailed explanation as to what being a High School Principal ent ails.
We had a meeting with Mrs Peno, the direct or of East Lake Ma cquarie publ ic schools, this was very
interesting and informative, and I discovered some interesting facts about Belmont High School as
well as some other schools.
We discovered that Mr Robinson’s job is actuall y a l ot more than meets the eye; for st arters he is
responsible for 1000+ st udents an d around 100 staff members.
Overall the day was a very fun and well planned. I would definit ely recommend that all future SRC
representatives sign up to take this opportunity as you would find it highly enjoyable and would
further extend your knowledge.

Transition programs have been introduced to make strong connections with students and have an
interest in supporting transition of students through and from school, in collaboration with other
staff members.
Programs develop closer connections with student support agencies including youth groups and
relevant government departments, Local Community Partnerships and industry groups that are
committed to making connections to support young people in their transition from school.
Below are listed the programs currently offered at Belmont High School:

valuable experience for these students to volunteer their time and skills whilst gaini ng an insight
into the workings of the kitchen and the importance of nutritious food for young children.
Youth Frontiers
Youth Frontiers is a youth mentoring program funded by the NS W Department of Education &
Communities. Youth Frontiers is aimed at stu dents in years 8 or 9, who have the capacity to benefit
from youth mentoring that focuses on leadership and civic engagement. Every year, more than
1,200 young people wi ll have the opportuni ty to partici pate i n the program deli vered across NSW,
which encompasses over 30 hours of mentoring by a community volunteer and the development of
a community project over a 6 month period.
Sixteen students from Year 8 will be beginning this program in week 8 of Term 2 and continue for
the remainder of the Year.

cope with inclement conditions, but a dry day was in our prayers. Luck was with us and it was a
great day allowing the carnival to be completed in a very positive manner.
Student attendance was a little disappoint ing but probably to be expected with the cold and flu
season in full swing and the uncertainty of the conditions. Had the weather leading up to
Tuesday‟s carnival been more welcoming we would have expected a larger student population to
add to the atmosphe re.
