Since 1950, TIMET has been leading the industry by producing
the highest quality mill and melted products, and supplying
nearly one-fifth of the world’s titanium. TIMET invented the
first welded tubing for use in nuclear power plant condensers

Titanium performs best in
the world’s harshest environments
Wet chlorine. Salt water. Acid condensation. These are the
enemies of metal components used in critical applications
for power generation, oil drilling, chemical processing and
desalination. Titanium resists or is immune to corrosion
in many of these harsh environments, often lasting for
more than 40 years. And it has recently been evaluated to
be more cost-effective than copper and stainless steels
through lifecycle analysis.
The benefits of titanium are well proven – both in the lab
and on the job. Titanium will perform for years longer in
harsh environments with minimal upkeep, longer than any
other competitive product in many applications. Because
properly selected titanium does not corrode, there is little
or no risk of leaks or part failures. Fewer failures can mean
less downtime and fewer maintenance interruptions.
While many alloy producers boast low initial material
costs, the fact is that the lifecycle cost of titanium is equal
to or less than those materials. And, where no corrosion
allowances are necessary, designers can use titanium more
efficiently and create more effective products and parts.
For these reasons, energy and industrial companies around
the world are now using titanium for their most challenging
applications. The world’s largest desalination projects are
making the switch from cupro-nickel to titanium. Consider

Nuclear power engineers specify titanium for heat exchanger
tubing. And because titanium is corrosion-resistant, they
can achieve thinner walls with excellent thermal conductivity.
In power plants where seawater, chlorinated water or brackish
water is used for cooling, TIMET supplies the recognized
industry-standard coil product for the manufacture of titanium
condenser tubing for large capital installations designed to
last for many decades. In fact, with titanium, design engineers
can specify a zero-corrosion rate in seawater.
Titanium is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, erosion-resistant
and strong, making it an excellent material for offshore oil
and gas applications. It is particularly well-suited to today’s
deeper high-pressure, high-temperature wells. Where these
severe conditions exceed design limitations of conventional
corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) tubular materials, TIMET
titanium alloys offer yield strength exceeding 110 ksi (760 MPa)
coupled with general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking
resistance. And low-density titanium for fire water piping and
heat exchangers reduces offshore platform weight.
Titanium alloys are also solving difficult challenges in many
geothermal energy applications where no other materials
can withstand the severe conditions. Large-diameter
titanium alloy pipes are required to conduct hot, corrosive
concentrated brine from deep underground for many years
without corrosion or scaling.
Since titanium is often virtually maintenance-free, oil and gas
producers can slash the cost of upkeep that comes with other
piping materials. Further, titanium is reusable, recyclable and
inert to the environment.

Chemical processing operations such as distillation,
heat transfer and acid reactions use titanium to increase
equipment life. Titanium offers lifecycle cost advantages
over copper, nickel and stainless steel alloys while
providing initial cost advantages over materials such
as high-nickel alloys, tantalum and zirconium.
The corrosive effects of saltwater make titanium the perfect
choice for desalination plants. In fact, the world’s largest
desalination project, Ras Al-Zour in Saudi Arabia, recently
selected titanium over cupro-nickel for both economic and
long-term performance.
Chemical process engineers select titanium because
it reduces lifecycle costs across a broad range of
equipment and processes. Due to its lower density,
titanium plate is often a cost-effective solution on a
per-square-foot basis compared to corrosion-resistant
alloys such as Inconel and Hastelloy of equal thickness.
Further, the well-known titanium surface oxide layer
is an outstanding corrosion barrier.
TIMET supplies titanium coil to the desalination industry
through exclusive relationships with major tubing suppliers.
Titanium tubes handle corrosive seawater without any
negative effect in systems throughout the world, including
Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Italy,
Spain, Cyprus, Malta and the islands of the Caribbean.
