My Sisters and Brothers,
Can you imagine that wonderful day in the synagogue when
Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah the very familiar passage
that begins with the words, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because He has anointed me. . .” and then sat down and proclaimed to the people, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled
in your hearing”. Jesus filled their hear ts with gr eat hope
and joy, and then went on to demonstrate with His life how
those words of Isaiah were being fulfilled in Him. What a great
day for those people who were longing and waiting for salvation. Each of us has been anointed at our Baptism and Confirmation. The Spirit of the Lord is upon each of us. It is our challenge to live up to those words of bringing glad tidings to the
poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and to
proclaim a year of favor acceptable to the Lord. Do we do our
part to have that prophesy be fulfilled through our lives? Do we
bring hope and joy to people who surround us? Do not ever
forget that you are anointed in the Lord.
I am happy to share with you that we are in the process of making some cosmetic renovations to the interior of our church.
Now that our roof project is complete, we know it is time to
look at the inside and do some renovations to further enhance
the aesthetic beauty of the place where we worship God. For all
practical purposes, very little has been done to the interior of
the church building, and most is original with the building of
the church in 1983-84. It is definitely time. In the next few
weeks we will be sharing these plans with you in more detail,
but for now I want to familiarize you with the process, content,
and means by which we hope to update our worship space.
The process started over a year ago when we convened a group
of talented parishioners, some of whom are interior designers
and people responsible for the art and environment of our
building, and asked them for suggestions to update our 32 year
old building that was starting to show its wear and is in need of
refurbishing. Their charge was not to change the structure of
the building, but rather to give suggestions to things like flooring, lighting, painting, sound, and possibly the reredos wall.
After much planning, debating, and consulting with professionals in these areas, this committee presented their ideas and
plans to our Pastoral Staff, who examined, questioned, and
gave ideas, but ultimately, were very pleased with the hard
work and thought that was put into this plan. The intention of
everyone was to do something that would be in keeping with
the architecture and style of our church, and enable us to continue to be proud of our beautiful church, as well as to help us
to celebrate liturgy and worship God in the best way possible.
Our Pastoral Staff ultimately gave great support and approval
to this project. Right after our Christmas celebration, the committee also presented its proposal to the Worship and Prayer
Commission and received great support from them. Last week
we presented the plans to the members of our Pastoral and Finance Councils who gave their enthusiastic support for the project. We also informed the Bishop’s office of our plans and
received his approval to proceed with the flooring, painting,
lighting, and sound. The Bishop needs to personally approve
the plans for the reredos wall, which we will be presenting to
him in the near future. In a few weeks we will make available
in the Gathering Area a look at the color and type of flooring (a
combination of non-skid tile and carpeting), the paint color,
and what we propose for the back reredos wall, incorporating
and highlighting the current Resurrection statue as the centerpiece. I believe that the proposal is aesthetically and spiritually
very pleasing, and that it all ties together very well. Certainly
when it comes to decorating and artistic taste there are a variety of opinions, but I believe, along with the support of our various consultative bodies, that this plan will work very well for
us now and in the long term.
We have not determined a strict timeline yet, but in all likelihood we will begin with flooring during this coming Lent. At
the same time we hope to get started on the lighting. You may
have noticed that we have done some wiring work while the
roof was being put on, so as not to disrupt the new roof. Our
hope is that the church will be much brighter and easier for
people to read. Lighting experts and consultants are in the process of finalizing the plans. The same thing goes with new
speakers for our sound system. There really has been a lot of
progress in this area over the years. Painting will take place at
a later time and in some senses may be the easiest part of this.
And the changes to the reredos wall await the Bishop’s input
and approval. The cost of this entire project is about $260,000,
all of which will be taken from our parish share of Rooted in
Faith money, just like the r oof. Interior and exterior r enovations of the church were our first priority for usage of our
Rooted in Faith monies, and we are required to use these funds
according to our stated goals. I will be sharing more details in
the near future. Please feel free to talk with me or leaders of
our parish if you have questions, ideas, or concerns. We are all
excited to see this finally taking place.
Coming up in the next couple weeks is Catholic Schools
Week beginning with Open House on January 31st; our
super Souper Bowl dinner on February 6th to benefit our Food
Pantry; and the beginning of a Lent full of activities on Ash
Wednesday, February 10th. As you can see, our staff and
parish leaders have been hard at work enabling our parish to
grow, to celebrate, and to do God’s work, especially in our
Jubilee Year and throughout this Year of Mercy. We humbly
and gratefully look forward to your participation, cooperation,
and support.
Have a great week. Stay warm. Be safe. And may the God of
all mercy shine His love and peace on you.
In God’s love,

LITURGY CORNER
Liturgy is very important. Celebrating liturgy forms us as Catholic Christians. Its rituals, songs,
scriptures and prayers, along with how we move, all make a difference and prepare us to announce
the Gospel with our lives. The importance of liturgy is emphasized in all three readings we hear today in this Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. The First Reading describes liturgy as the Israelites relearn how to honor, hear, and live God’s law. They eat and drink to celebrate their return to temple and to religious
practice. Today, we gather in liturgy as the Body of Christ. In the Second Reading, Paul uses our own bodies to describe the importance of the Christian Community. One body part cannot act in isolation from the rest. Our unique
gifts as individuals help the entire Body live what we celebrate. Finally, in today’s Gospel, Jesus reads from Isaiah
during liturgy and invites us to identify his life and ministry as the time when God’s promised favor, freedom, justice
and mercy are fulfilled. So, indeed, the weekly Mass is not something to take lightly, but to be approached joyfully
and with reverence as we together as a community, be nourished through the Word and receive Jesus in the Eucharist. It identifies who we are.

Music Notes …
At the beginning of every weekend Mass as the gathering
hymn is announced we invite each other to recognize one
another as the body of Christ. This weekend's readings
focus on how we, today, are the body of Christ in the
world. The Gospel reading is profound. Jesus reads the
Scripture and proclaims it fulfilled. "We are many parts.
We are all one body. And the gifts we have we are given
to share." From "We are Many Parts."

Mosquito alert …
Normally mosquitoes are not a concern in the winter, but
this year they are making the news. The CDC has released
a Travel Alert Level 2, Practice Enhanced Precautions for
women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
regarding travel to 14 countries and territories in Latin
America and the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, Mexico and Haiti. This alert is in response to an outbreak of
the Zika virus found in mosquitoes and transmitted
through their bites. In the average person, infection with
this virus results in symptoms of fever, rash, joint pain, or
conjunctivitis (red eyes) lasting about a week. But in
pregnant women, the virus has been linked to microcephaly (unusually small head and underdeveloped brain) of
their babies. There is not currently a proven direct relationship but the 2015 incidence of microcephaly in Brazil
increased by 10 times at the same time they are also experiencing an outbreak of the Zika virus. In efforts to be
cautious the CDC is recommending pregnant women not
travel to areas where the infection is spreading and if they
did that they be tested for the Zika virus and their babies
be monitored closely. Here’s to our health!
