From the President - Thornwell Home for Children
From the President
Children aren’t “designed” to grow up alone. They’re
vulnerable and dependent, and they look to the rest
of us to love them and to provide even their most
basic needs. They’re meant to be surrounded by
families who value them and nurture them along.
When families aren’t there for them, for whatever
reason, it’s critical that those children have
relationships that “feel” like a family. At Thornwell,
Family Teachers are providing such a family-like
experience for the children who come and go
through our doors every year.
These folks are highly trained individuals who have
all made a deliberate choice to parent the children at
Thornwell. Some have left lucrative careers and
comfortable homes in the suburbs. Others are
college graduates or recently retired. All want to
make a difference in the life of a child.
When they join us, we make sure they’re prepared
to deal with the daily realities of raising youngsters,
most of whom have already tasted more bitter than
sweet in their young lives. After intensive training,
they become Family Teachers; acting as the heads of
households, shaping their cottage domains as if it
were their own homes, focusing on the care of the
six to eight children living under their roofs.
We can’t pay them near what they are worth. But
they stay anyway and encourage their friends to join
them in some of the most remarkable and intensive
work being done with displaced children
anywhere in the world.
Recently, one of our Family Teachers said, “My
husband and I are determined to see the young girls
in our cottage right through college and their
wedding days!”
In this country—when on a given day more than
3,000 children see their parents divorced, more than
100,000 homeless children wander our city streets,
and nearly 2,000 are abused and neglected—it’s good
to know that the children at Thornwell have such
competent, mature, loving adults conspiring for their
success. As Dr. Scott Weimer, senior pastor of the
North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, GA,
says, “Thornwell is the most remarkable ministry to
displaced children in the Presbyterian Church!”
Today, more than 700 of the 987 Presbyterian
churches in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida not
only believe that what we do at Thornwell matters,
but they also support it financially. In addition, there
are thousands of women and men, and even children,
who provide their personal gifts, large and small, to
keep the doors open.
As the president of Thornwell, I see how your gifts
impact the lives of the children every day. One day,
thanks to you, they’ll understand the difference a
good home made in their lives. Until that time, know
that you’re helping to raise some wonderful children!
Gratefully yours,
Robert W. “Skip” Stansell

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down,
shaken together and running over…” – Luke 6:38
The Cassels Family
a Legacy of Caring and Giving
William T. (Bill) Cassels, Jr., would agree: he and his
family have been given “good measure.”
Bill grew up in a loving Christian home. He married
his childhood sweetheart, Charlotte, and together
they had two wonderful children, Katherine (Kathy)
and Tobin Cassels III. Bill is a man of God, a devoted
husband and grandfather of five, a decorated veteran
of the Korean War, a highly respected business and
community leader, and now the chairman and chief
executive officer of Southeastern Freight Lines—one
of the nation’s most successful trucking firms and one
of South Carolina’s largest privately held companies.
Those who know Bill will add that, like his father
before him, Bill also has a caring heart and a desire
to give back in “good measure” when and wherever
he can.
When his father (W.T. Cassels) founded Southeastern
Freight Lines in 1950, he did so with the belief that
taking care of people who help others will take care
of the future.
Today that simple, yet profound, philosophy
has become a living legacy for the entire Cassels
family—and now a true blessing for Thornwell
Home for Children.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the
Cassels’ family of Columbia, Thornwell has been
given a gift of $1 million to fund an endowment for
Christian nurture.
“Children are the future and taking care of them,
helping them grow in the Christian faith, is what
Thornwell is all about,” said Skip Stansell, Thornwell’s
president. “This gift will touch the lives of countless
children and will help strengthen Thornwell’s
program of Christian nurture.”
The Cassels Family Foundation’s inspiring gift will
generate much-needed income that will allow
Thornwell to provide comprehensive programs of
worship, bible study, mission outreach, Christian
summer camps and conferences, as well as liturgical
music and the arts.
“We want every child who comes to Thornwell to
know that he or she is a child of God and to learn to
live out that faith, just as Bill and his family have, in
their own lives,” Skip added. “We are truly grateful
and humbled by their generosity.”
Editor’s note: if you would like more information on gifting for
Christian nurture or any of Thornwell’s ministries, please call Nancy
Lindeman, vice president for Resource Development, at 864-938-2734.

Be joyful always,
pray without ceasing!
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17
Community prayer is awesome because it is the
prayer of many people approaching God together,
praying in accord and in agreement. On that
gorgeous October day in Clinton, SC, many voices
on Thornwell’s campus combined to make a single
voice of prayer to God.
After a meaningful time of praying while walking
the campus, we returned to the church and ended
our Prayer Walk in the sanctuary with a closing
song and prayer.
We could not have asked for a better day! The sun
was shining brightly, there was a slight breeze, and
the temperature was just right—not too hot and
not too cold! It was the perfect day for our fall
campus-wide Prayer Walk.
Staff members, children, Family Teachers, and people
from the community joyfully gathered on Sunday
evening, October 21, at the Hartness-Thornwell
Memorial Presbyterian Church to unite in prayer!
We began with a song and a prayer in the sanctuary.
Then, we quietly exited the sanctuary and walked the
campus—praying as we walked! More than 80 people
gathered on that day to saturate our campus with
prayer. Some chose to walk and pray alone, while
others chose to walk and pray in a group. It was
amazing to see our entire campus and friends from
the community united in prayer!
Here at Thornwell, we know that God graciously
answers prayers according to His will and we wholeheartedly believe in the power of prayer. Please know
that our prayers are with you, and we thank you for
the many prayers you pray for us! Together, we can
continue to make Thornwell a joyful Christian
community where the love of Jesus Christ abides!
Peace and grace,
Pastor Alice

A Love Story:
If My Kitchen Table Could Talk
By Laurie Laughridge Wilson
It was the early 1900s. George Robertson Gillespie
was a dapper young pharmacist from Lexington, KY,
who was smitten upon meeting a lovely young
woman from St. Joseph, MO, named Jessie May
Ephlin. As time progressed, he became certain that
she was the woman with whom he wanted to spend
the rest of his life. He soon proposed marriage; but,
being unconvinced of his absolute devotion to Christ,
she was unwilling to commit.
After more than several years and much soul searching, George entered seminary and became a
Presbyterian minister. He and Jessie eventually began
a love story. They were married and entered a life of
ministry together. One seemingly small aspect of that
ministry was the acquisition of a mission oak dining
table with six leaves that could seat a crowd. As the
years progressed, the table would serve as a gathering
place for family meal times and the showing of
hospitality to friends and strangers, alike.
You see, God had blessed George and Jessie with
seven children, the eldest of whom was Ruth
Elizabeth. Ruth grew into a missions-minded young
woman and entered
nursing school.
While working at a
hospital during
nurse’s training, she
became acquainted
with a gentleman
patient named
Laurie Cargill
Fowke and learned
that his wife had
died giving birth to
their fifth child. As
time passed, Ruth
5
and Laurie began a love story of their own and were
eventually married. She became a newlywed and
mother of five girls in the same day! Later, the happy
couple had four more children of their own—two
boys and two girls.
George and Jessie gave the oak dining table to Laurie
and Ruth to accommodate their large family. In the
tradition of her parents, it was around the table where
Ruth enjoyed hosting visiting pastors and church
visitors from their Presbyterian church outside of
Barnwell, SC. She was in full swing as a wife and
mother of nine when tragedy struck. Her beloved
husband, Laurie, and her father, George, died within
a day of each other.
Ruth was overtaken with grief and responsibility. Her
providers were no more, and her three youngest children were ages 12 and under. Being of Presbyterian
heritage, she was familiar with the ministry of the
Thornwell orphanage. She knew that part of their
loving philosophy was to keep families intact by taking in siblings. She also knew that at Thornwell her
children would receive Christian nurture and education until she could get her life re-established. For
four years, Thornwell became home to Ruth’s three
young ones. During those years, she established a
new home in Columbia, SC, to which the children
were able to return.
The eldest of those three was Phyllis Jean Fowke,
who, after graduating from high school, went on to
nursing school at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte,
NC. When at home in Columbia on a break, she
attended the Westminister Fellowship for College
Students at First Presbyterian Church and met the
man who would become the love of her life, Richard
Thomas Laughridge. Thus, another love story had
begun! Phyllis and Richard married and had four
children (of which I am the eldest).

and Jessie Ephlin Gillespie

and Ruth’s father, George Gillespie
Phyllis, my dear mother, remembered her days at
Thornwell with fondness. While in my youth, she
took me to Summerville, SC, to the Presbyterian
Home to visit her Thornwell housemother—a godly
woman who remained like a family member until her
death. My mom had a heart for the brokenhearted.
She understood their pain, and so our family would
“adopt” a child from the Carolina Children’s Home in
Columbia and, on occasion, have her over after
school to play. Mom would teach us by example to
comfort others with the comfort you have received.
(2 Corinthians 1:4)
After graduating from Clemson University, I married
the love of my life and began yet another love story.
My grandmother, Ruth, gave my husband and me
(upon my begging!) the old mission oak table as a gift
before her death.
Two years ago, I was asked to serve as a member of
the newly established Board of Visitors for Thornwell
Home for Children, which I gladly accepted. This
past August, a Capital Campaign meeting for
Thornwell was conducted around the old oak table in
our kitchen in Florence, SC, and I reminisced about
its origins. Little did George and Jessie know what a
heritage it would see! I was reminded that the greatest
lover through all of these love stories would be the
Lover of our Souls, the Lord Jesus Christ, whose
faithfulness endures to all generations. (Psalm 119:90)
An integral expression of His faithfulness to my
family had been through the faithfulness of His
people at Thornwell to love and care for the widow
and fatherless in their distress (James 1:27).
Praise be to God.

Progress Report:
Thornwell Kids
Off to School
How Well Are
They Doing?
In August 2007, while Family Teachers wore their
most encouraging smiles and waved nervous goodbyes, the children of Thornwell boarded their buses
for a new adventure as students of the public schools
in Clinton, SC.
“Last summer we were facing a lot of unknowns,” said
Lindy Scott, vice president of Thornwell’s Children
and Family Ministries, “but the transition has gone as
well as we had hoped for and the school district
deserves lots of credit for such a great job.”
“I think the change has promoted a lot of healthy
dialogue between the community and Thornwell,”
said April Haywald, one of the Family Teachers in
Wilson Cottage. “We’ve already hosted several of our
girls’ teachers for dinner in our cottage, and they were
just stunned to see all the good things going on here
at Thornwell.”
It also helps that the principal of Clinton Elementary
School was a former student at Thornwell. “She
understands the particular needs of a Thornwell
child,” said April, “and she does everything she can to
help meet those needs.”
The kids themselves seem to like the new direction.
“Our kids are real social, so they love getting to make
new friends,” said April. “We have girls from kindergarten to fifth grade in our cottage (April and husband
Kenneth have two children of their own), and this
experience has opened up their lives to some wonderful new relationships in the community—with
everything from sleepovers to birthday parties.”
The good reports overall don’t deny that there have
been some hard challenges along the way. “A couple
of our boys have had some difficulty adjusting to the
larger class sizes,” said Ferguson Cottage Family
Teacher Logan Spoon. “As a result, one of ours is now
in an alternative school program. He just needed more
attention than the larger classroom could provide.”
Thornwell anticipated such problems last fall and
opened the Thornwell Learning Center as an
7
academic program with a focus on target skills,
tutoring, homework support, and Accelerated
Reading and Math programs. Norman Dover, former
principal of the Thornwell Elementary School, is the
director. “We still believe that parents are the Number
One influence in a child’s education,” Norman said,
“so we do anything we can do to motivate each child
to excel, just as if that child were our very own.”
“From the start, one of our big questions was how the
changes would impact our older youth,” said Lindy.
“We knew they would be going into a very different
environment than the one they had known on this
campus. So far, however, they seem to be thriving.”
Three Thornwell youth were recently inducted into
the Beta Club; one senior has already joined the ranks
of the National Honor Society; several are members
of the volleyball and basketball teams; and the Drama
Department claims several Thornwell Thespians. “We
try to nurture a ‘can do’ attitude at Thornwell and our
kids really practice it,” said Lindy.
At Thornwell, however, motivation begins with the
attitude of the adults. “School is a big deal at our
house. When our boys come home in the afternoon,
they know we’ll have a snack for about 30 minutes—
then everyone is off to do homework,” said Logan. “A
couple of them choose to go to the Learning Center,
and they’ll work there until 4:00 p.m. Our goal is to
stay on task and have every school assignment ready
for the next morning.”
Always looking for new ways to encourage younger
readers, Norman moved the books from Thornwell’s
former elementary school to the Learning Center.
The plan appears to be working.
“At Thornwell, our reading program has always been
the key to our academic success,” said Norman. “By
making books more accessible to our younger readers
through the Learning Center, and offering rewards
like pizza parties and ice cream sundaes, our kids
begin to think that reading is a cool thing to do.”
Perhaps, the best thing Thornwell kids have going
for them is their ability to go out into the world and
manage new situations. “We stay in close contact
with our teachers,” said Logan, “and all of them are
blown away by our kids’ social skills and their overall
good behavior.”
Thornwell’s Teaching-Family Model—with its
emphasis on such basics as eye contact, following
instructions, accepting no for an answer, and other
life skills—is proving its worth beyond the watchful
eyes of the Family Teachers. “We know what these
kids can do,” said Logan, “and we consider it a
privilege to stand by them and support them.”
Does anyone miss the old days when everyone went
to school on campus? “I still miss the sounds of having kids up and down these sidewalks during the day,”
said Lindy. “It’s just natural to remember the way
things were and to want to keep them that way; but,
thank goodness, we don’t have anyone hiding underneath the bed in the morning, refusing to go to
school. I think that’s because we’ve believed in them
and supported them just like any parent would do.
And they’ve responded beautifully.”

Gifts of a
Giving Heart
By Lee Higgins
This article was originally published in The State
on November 30, 2007 and is being reprinted with
permission. ([email protected])
Kari Crawford, Justin’s mom
helps deliver a truckload of toys
to Thornwell in honor of her
son’s memory.
When Justin Pepper turned 7, he told his mother he
wanted to give the toys from his birthday party to
children less fortunate than he.
That was Dec. 1, 2002, Christmas was just around the
corner and Justin was simply grateful for what he had,
his mother, Kari Crawford, said.
He and his mom visited the Thornwell Home for
Children in Clinton, which takes care of children of
parents who are addicted to drugs, have untreated
mental illnesses and other problems and can’t care
for them.
“He really felt bad for them and realized he had both
his parents, and he had lots of things and they didn’t
have anything,” Crawford said. “Every year, he
reminded me, ‘Mom, we need to do that again.’ ”
And every year for the next four years, Justin donated
his birthday gifts to the children at Thornwell.
That ended this year. Justin died in a car accident
Aug. 14 in Norton, Va., on his way to visit relatives.
He was 11.
But Justin’s mom and his dad, James Thomas Pepper,
wanted to make sure his legacy of generosity lives on.
With their church, Lake Murray Presbyterian in
Chapin, they’re organizing a toy drive in his honor. It
ends Saturday — his birthday — with a breakfast at
the church.
The toys will go to Thornwell, which houses 90
children ages 21/2 to 18.
Three church youth groups are helping with the drive
and will deliver the toys to the home Saturday. The
youths also will go to a parade with the children and
hold a field day for them.
9
Austin Shelley, the
church’s director of
youth ministries, is
expecting 50-75 fourththrough 12th-graders to
participate.
“When something tragic
like this happens, people
are always looking for
something hopeful to look forward to,” Shelley
said. “His example of giving is something that we
can follow.”
Thornwell is a ministry of the Presbyterian Church
(USA) and served 105 children last year, said Bill
Tiller, director of the Thornwell Fund for Children.
Children at the home are grouped by age and gender
and live in cottages with married couples to replicate
a family environment.
“It’s wonderful that Justin’s memory can live on in
such a positive way,” Tiller said. “Justin was an amazing young man and he had a very mature heart.”
She told Crawford she recognized Justin’s photograph in the newspaper obituary and recalled that he
had volunteered with a group to paint her porch.
“It just touched my heart,” Crawford said. “It really
made me feel good. I heard so many things Justin did
for people I didn’t even know.”
Justin’s last act of generosity came shortly after his
death: His heart, liver, kidneys and corneas were
transplanted into five people who needed them.
“You’re never too young to help somebody,” his
mother said, “and that’s what I want to instill in other
kids and other people.”
Justin grew up in Chapin, frequently volunteered to
help others and stood up for children who were bullied at school, his mother said. He played football
and baseball and loved his golden retriever, Summer,
and cats Sean and Ashley.
Justin also liked to joke around, proudly riding
around a too-small pink bicycle — complete with
training wheels — he had won at a bingo night last
spring at Chapin Elementary.
When Crawford held the visitation Aug. 17 for Justin,
who was her only child, an elderly woman she’d
never met approached her at the church.

The Book You’ve BeenWaiting For!
How Thornwell’s Own Jim and Becky Brown
Inspired a New Publication
Karla Lanier didn’t know she was going to write a
book when she began working as an evaluator with
Stewart Cottage Family Teachers Jim and Becky
Brown. “I noticed they were doing some great
things with younger children and the kids were very
responsive to them,” said Karla. “I saw right away
how all their interactions with the children were so
natural. That’s when I knew I had to capture their
ideas in a book.”
In 1993, Karla, a mother of three, joined Appalachian
Family Innovations, a part of the Reich College of
Education at Appalachian State University in
Morganton, NC. “When I chose the Teaching-Family
Model as my graduate degree focus, I knew the
Browns would figure prominently into that study.”
Her book is entitled The A-Z Behavior Curriculum:
Teaching Children the Skills They Need to Succeed at Home,
School, Play, the Grocery Store, Everywhere! It is dedicated
to Jim and Becky, along with the children of Stewart
Cottage. The book is described as a resource for
teachers or parents whose goal is to teach children
social skills that promote age-appropriate
independence and the ability to get along with
others in various social settings.
“I think the biggest need most parents have is
consistency,” said Karla. “I wanted to help them learn
by teaching them how to identify clearly defined
skills and behavioral expectations.”
Each skill is broken down into easy steps that both
children and adults can understand and practice
together. Karla’s premise is that when children know
11
exactly what is expected and adults know exactly
what to praise, both parties are clear when guidance
or consequences are needed. “I also give at least one
activity like a song or game or story in every lesson
that should be reviewed often with small children
simply because they thrive on repetition!” said Karla.
“You’ve got to reinforce the behavior you want to
shape.”
Because children and adults engage in behaviors that
make them feel good, Karla maintains that adults
must continually direct their attention to the behaviors they want to see in their children. “If parents fail
to reinforce a child’s appropriate behaviors, the child
will eventually replace those behaviors with others
that will get the desired attention,” said Karla. “That’s
why no matter how well the lesson was taught originally, it must be sustained over time with praise or
some other appropriate recognition.”
On Holy Ground:
Teaching the Faith
at Thornwell
By Finley Sutton,
Director of Christian Education
Something new is happening on the Thornwell
campus these days! A little before 10:00 a.m. on
Sunday mornings, children and youth stream into
the Hartness-Thornwell Memorial Presbyterian
Church for Sunday School.
That may not sound new to you. “Sunday School: an
innovation?” you may ask. But for Thornwell, this is
something new. For years, our Church Enrichment
education occurred before the regular school day
on Wednesday mornings. It happened at different
sites around campus. The education wing of the
Hartness-Thornwell Memorial Presbyterian Church
sat empty on Sunday mornings.
Now, there is lots of hustle and bustle in the
education wing on Sundays. We have eight Sunday
School classes—each full of children and youth and
Family Teachers teaching the PC (USA) curriculum
Bible Quest. Since our children and youth now
attend public schools, part of their learning the
Christian faith at Thornwell occurs in Sunday
School the morning before worship.
It has been amazing to hear the prayers of these
young people at youth gatherings or in their cottages
when I am invited to join them for a meal. This fall, a
Presbyterian College student, a Family Teacher, and
I took 13 of our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to the
Trinity Presbytery Middle School Retreat in Black
Mountain, NC. Our youth volunteered to pray in
small groups and in our back-home group, to
participate when called on, and to share their talents
in the talent show. Their heartfelt passion for
Christ impressed me.
Standing with our Thornwell children and youth,
I believe I am standing on Holy Ground. I look
forward to the future challenges and joys of
nurturing these young people in the Christian faith.
The children are learning the faith through weekly
worship and cottage family devotions, as well.
As part of worship each week, I share a children’s
message with the younger children. Often using the
Bible story on which Pastor Alice is preaching, I have
used drama, puppets, teaching pictures, flannel
boards, the stained glass windows in the sanctuary,
and, during Advent, a Jesse tree to help make the
Bible story come alive for them.

Emily and Ross Merritt
were excited to turn in their
Thornwell turkeys
overflowing with coins.
Thornwell Turkeys
“Plump Up” with
the Help of Coins
When Canita Allen thinks of Thanksgiving, she can’t
help but recall the Thornwell cardboard turkeys she
was given every year as a child. “My church made
sure all the kids had them, so I grew up filling those
turkeys with nickels and dimes for the children of
Thornwell,” she said. “Now I just want the same
tradition for my kids.”
This past November, Canita helped to expand the
number of “turkey stuffers” by making the Thornwell
turkeys available to the children who attend the
Wednesday Evening Kids’ Program at Roswell
Presbyterian Church in Roswell, GA. “We’re fortunate
to have a lot of children at our church, and I want
every one of them to have the memory of helping
the kids at Thornwell,” Canita said.
Teresa Merritt, another Roswell member, now
understands firsthand Canita’s enthusiasm for such
a project. “I have a six-year-old daughter in the
program,” said Teresa, “and when Emily came home
with her turkey she told me she was going to fill it up!”
For more than a week, Emily asked everyone she
knew for money for her turkey. What she didn’t
collect from others she took out of her own piggy
bank. “We had talked about Thornwell and why her
gift was so important,” said Teresa, “and the next
thing I knew she was walking around with this poor
13
cardboard turkey that had been stuffed full of change
and dollar bills!”
When Emily returned her turkey to church it was
almost falling apart, with coins stacked three deep.
“She kept saying to me, ‘I need help because I can’t
make all the money stay in the slots!’” said Teresa. “I
told her they would understand and that every nickel
would get to the children at Thornwell. That seemed
to make her feel a little better.”
“I hope Emily will always keep her enthusiasm for
mission,” said Canita, “and I’m glad that the children
of Thornwell were her inspiration. I’ve already
ordered more turkeys for next year.”
a Promise is a Promise
Thornwell Welcomes New Part-time
Communications Coordinator
In 2005, Lorain Crowl made a promise to the Lord.
Lorain’s beloved sister had just died and she wanted
to honor her sister’s life. In prayer, Lorain promised
the Lord that, from that moment on, she would make
sure her own life “made a difference” in the
lives of others.
“First and foremost, I wanted to follow the Lord’s
leading and, with His guidance, commit my time and
talents to things that truly matter,” said Lorain.
“We’re grateful she made that promise,” said Nancy
Lindeman, vice president of Resource Development,
“because God has led her to Thornwell.”
Lorain has accepted the call to become Thornwell’s
part-time communications coordinator. In her new
position, Lorain will be responsible for all
internal/external communications for Thornwell’s
fundraising efforts, as well as for its communication
of general information.
“Helping children matters,” Lorain said. “That’s why
I’m so excited that I can be part of sharing
Thornwell’s stories—telling people how wonderful
Thornwell’s ministries are and what they do here to
help these kids!”
Lorain also worked as the marketing media coordinator for Phoenix Center in Greenville, SC, where she
designed marketing materials focused on the prevention of substance abuse.
In 2003, Lorain received a Certificate of Excellence in
Writing from the Institute of Children’s Literature for
her short stories for children and teens. In addition,
she has an extensive background in freelance writing,
graphic design, and grant writing.
Lorain received her Bachelor of Arts degree from
Lander University. She and her husband, Chris, and
their son, Matthew, reside in Greenville. The Crowl
family also has a foster son, 13-year-old Logan, who
has been reunited with his biological family.
Welcome to Thornwell, Lorain.
We know God has led you here
to help us make a difference!
Lorain (center) with a few of her closest friends—21 Chick-fil-A
"Cowz”—welcomed Truett Cathy, Chick-fil-A founder, to
Greenville this past October for the 1st Annual SC Clergy
Appreciation Luncheon. About 400 ministers came out to hear
Mr. Cathy speak at the event hosted by Donate Life SC.
Prior to joining Thornwell’s team, Lorain was
director of Programs Development for Donate Life
South Carolina. Donate Life South Carolina is a
non-profit organization that promotes organ and
tissue donation for transplantation, and provides
patient assistance for the state’s transplant recipients.
In that position, Lorain directed development
projects, marketing and media efforts, as well as
fundraising and special projects.

Thornwell’s New Florida Rep
Hits the Road as She Spreads
theWord about Thornwell
The roar of the highway, the hum of the car engine:
both are familiar sounds to Susan Sampson. As
Thornwell’s new regional director of Resource
Development for Florida, Susan’s job is to raise awareness and funds for Thornwell’s ministry throughout
the Sunshine State.
But it is more than a job—for Susan, it is a passion.
“I have an amazing opportunity to develop financial
resources for Thornwell, as well as human resources,”
said Susan. “I can tell people every day how incredible
Thornwell is and, even if they have never been on
campus, help them to understand the wonderful
work that is going on here for children and families
in crisis.”
For some, the task might be daunting—especially in
a state as vast as Florida. But, for Susan, traveling,
sharing her faith in God, and talking about Thornwell
is a natural fit and all part of God’s wondrous plan.
“We are extremely blessed to have Susan represent
Thornwell’s ministry and its needs in Florida,” said
Nancy Lindeman, vice president for Resource
Development and Public Relations. “Not only is she
led by her faith, but she has the determination and a
love for the children that drives her to succeed.”
Born in New York, Susan was raised in the
Presbyterian Church in what is now the Village of
Ossining. She attended First Presbyterian Church,
15
sang in the Youth Choir, and was actively involved in
the youth group. In her teenage years, Susan’s family
moved to Cape Coral, FL, and Faith Presbyterian
Church. A few years later, she attended the
University of South Florida in Tampa, where she
received her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary
social sciences and met her husband, Jim.
In 1991, Susan, Jim, and their two children moved
to Elk Rapids, MI, where Susan became the first
executive director of Antrim County’s Habitat for
Humanity. At Habitat for Humanity, Susan connected with influential people throughout the U.S. She
participated in the 2005 Michigan Jimmy Carter
Work Project. “The experience was invaluable,” Susan
said, “and it helped to prepare me for my role in
developing and building Thornwell’s future.”
About a year ago, Susan and Jim returned to Florida,
where now—instead of homes—she is building
relationships—hoping to help make Floridians more
aware of Thornwell’s ministry.
Operating out of her office in Tampa, Susan hits the
road talking with Presbyterian leaders, pastors, individuals, foundations, and businesses. She provides
presentations at mission fairs, Family Night suppers,
Sunday School classes—networking with people who
know about Thornwell and helping equip them with
information and resources that will help attract and
educate others.
“With her knowledge of our needs and her experience in development, we have no doubt Susan will
be able to help us increase the awareness of our
ministry,” said Nancy.
For Susan, this work is a calling. “God gave us gifts to
share. Whether you have the skills to speak publicly
or the ability to comfort a child, God commands us
to share our talents and strengths,” Susan said. “I am
grateful for the opportunity to encourage people to
fulfill God’s call to us to serve one another.”
Trust in the LORD with all your
heart and lean not on your own
understanding; in all your ways
acknowledge him, and he will
direct your paths.
- Proverbs 3:5-6
THE SERENITY PRAYER
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
- Reinhold Niebuhr
“I can tell people every day how incredible
Thornwell is and, even if they have never
been on campus, help them to understand
the wonderful work that is going on here
for children and families in crisis.”
Susan visits with the boys of TPH Cottage.

While the weather outside may be frightful,
your generosity is always delightful!
Everyone is so generous to choose and provide items from our Wish Lists — thanks! Some things that
are always in demand include:
• paper products (toilet tissue, paper towels);
• laundry products (detergent, bleach, dryer sheets);
• nonperishable snacks (granola bars, Pop Tarts®,
canned fruit, etc.);
• personal care items (shampoo/conditioner,
feminine hygiene, etc.);
• grocery gift cards (Bi-Lo, Ingles, Wal-Mart/Sam’s); and
• fast food coupons (McDonald’s, Chic-fil-A, Sonic,
Wendy’s, etc.).
On behalf of the children,
thank you!
