2014 Annual Report - Rett Syndrome Research Trust
2014 Annual Report
Making Rett History
Dear Friends,
My precious daughter, Chelsea, turned 18 years old in 2014. It’s a milestone birthday that parents of
special needs children face with mixed emotions. My heart is full with love and pride for the beautiful, emotive, tender yet determined young woman that Chelsea has become. But I am also mourning.
Mourning for a childhood never lived and forever lost.
When Chelsea was a toddler I made her a promise – that I would do everything in my power to heal
her. With little science background, zero drug development knowledge and no fundraising experience
I did not appreciate the enormity of my promise. Ignorance, at times, can be a blessing.
The Rett research landscape in the year Chelsea was diagnosed, 1998, was dismal. The disorder was
practically unknown in medical and scientific circles, there was no known gene and therefore no diagnostic blood test, there were no animal models, and there was little research beyond trying to pinpoint
the genetic cause.
My conviction that treatments and a cure for Rett were possible came from both visceral intuition and
a mother’s love. Today that conviction is based on science.
Love alone cannot cure Rett but love and research will. It’s been 16 years and I am more than ready to
deliver on my promise.
Thank you so much for your support.
Monica Coenraads, Executive Director, RSRT
Rett Syndrome Research Trust
RSRT was launched in 2008 with the purpose
of driving research toward a cure for Rett
Syndrome and related MECP2 disorders. Our
mission is urgent: 15,000 girls and women
in the United States and 350,000 globally
live with the agonizing symptoms of Rett
Syndrome.
RSRT funds more research than any other
Rett organization in the U.S. and abroad. Since
our inception, RSRT has awarded $25 million
to research, more than half of that in the last
two years. An average of ninety-six percent of
every dollar donated to RSRT goes directly to
our research program. Keeping our internal
team lean and fiercely motivated allows us to
focus funds and energy on what matters most:
healing our children.

As one of the few neurological disorders to
show dramatic symptom reversal in mice,
Rett Syndrome has attracted unprecedented
interest from university and pharmaceutical
scientists. Through innovative research and
constant engagement with scientists, clinicians,
industry, investors and affected families, RSRT
is at the epicenter of this activity.
We do more than just write checks: we are
changing the landscape of Rett research.
We set the research agenda by proactively
identifying and monitoring promising
therapeutic areas, seeking out scientific and
industry partnerships and working closely
with them to advance programs through the
drug development pipeline. We are risk takers
who do not shy away from bold and innovative
projects unlikely to be funded by the NIH or
other more conventional funding agencies.
We believe in a future
without Rett. It’s up to us
to make it happen. We
cannot wait for someone
else to do it for us.
Rett Syndrome
Rett Syndrome is a serious lifelong neurological
disorder that afflicts girls almost exclusively. It
is caused by random mutations in a gene called
MECP2 and affects approximately 350,000
girls and women globally.
Most girls with Rett develop normally for the
first twelve to eighteen months of life. Then a
regression occurs, over a period that spans days
to months, in which previously acquired skills
are lost. Many children with Rett are unable
to speak, walk or use their hands. Breathing
problems, feeding tubes, seizures, anxiety,
gastrointestinal and orthopedic problems are
common.
Rett Syndrome stands apart from most other
neurological disorders due to the dramatic
reversibility of symptoms in mouse models. It
is, in theory, a curable condition. But much
scientific work lies ahead to translate a reversal
in mice to a reversal in girls and women. RSRT’s
conviction that this can be accomplished guides
our every decision and drives us to accelerate
the research relentlessly.
Despite the debilitating
nature of the disorder our
girls are so much more
than a laundry list of
symptoms. Their beauty
and their strength inspire
and motivate us.
2014 Fundraising Events
RSRT could not do what it does without funds raised at events that are
spearheaded by families affected by Rett Syndrome. These dedicated
families and their friends are making a difference to the research and
to the future for girls and women with Rett. We are tremendously
grateful. These are highlights from 2014.
