STEWARDSHIP
“We are always courageous, although we know that while
we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord,
for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are courageous,
and we would rather leave the body and go home to the
Lord. Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are
at home or away.”
2 Corinthians 5: 7-9
As Christians, we also know that the conclusions of the
heart are as valid as those of the mind. Yet, this is one of
the most difficult aspects of our relationship to God and to
one another. Faith implies trust. Without that sense of
trust, that feeling of hope, that awareness that there is
more to truth than what seems obvious, we cannot pursue
discipleship and stewardship the way Jesus has invited
us to live. Our faith - our commitment to living as Christians - must pervade everything in our lives, everything
we do every day.- See more at www.catholicsteward.com/
blog/.

LIVING STONES
Foundations for Living Stones
A Faith Formation Program for interested Adults
“Come to him, a living stone...chosen and precious in the
sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourself be built
into a spiritual house...” (1 Peter 2:4-5)
St. Sabina, a Catholic faith community committed to total
and lifelong faith formation, is offering an adult faith formation program titled, Foundations for Living
Stones. The program explores in greater depth and
knowledge the basics of our faith. All the sessions focus
on the ministry that we are called to in and through our
baptism. Communication skills, group development, leadership skills, bible study, church history, prayer and sacraments are some of the many areas explored and examined in depth. Adult methods of learning and reflection
are employed throughout.
The sessions are scheduled on Tuesday evenings, from 7
-9:30 PM, beginning in late August and ending in late
May. This is a 9-month commitment to deepen one’s
skills and knowledge so as to become a more effective
and engaging minister. We hope to work collaboratively
with our neighboring parishes, inviting them to be part of
this mutual learning process. For a brochure or more information, please call or e-mail either Kris or Biagio at:

LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION? Come to St. Sabina on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, 7:00-8:30 PM, Parish
Center. Join representatives of the Ignatian Spirituality
Center of Kansas City for prayer and a brief overview of
the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life of St. Ignatius
Loyola (SEEL). The program is based on the conversion
experience of St. Ignatius Loyola. The Spiritual Exercises
include journaling, praying with Scripture, and meeting
weekly with a trained prayer companion.
If you are wondering if this is the right time for you to live
this experience, or, if you want to hear about other ways
to expand your prayer life, spend an hour or so with
us. Can’t come on June 16th? Other dates are being finalized in parishes across the metro and will be posted at
http://ignatiancenterkc.org. For more information, please
contact Mary Anne Morgenegg, ISC-KC, 816-809-6652.
SUMMER CHOIR AT 10:30 MASS

Summer choir for 10:30 Mass will begin June 7 and run
through July 19. There are no evening rehearsals. Just
show up on Sunday morning at 9:30 AM in the music
room to prepare for Mass that morning. Try it out and see
if it is for you! You can come once, a few times, or each

PRAYER FOR THE ELECTION OF A BISHOP
O God, eternal shepherd, who govern your flock with
unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a

KANSAS CITY GANGSTER TOUR - JUNE 25
Come and join our Over 55 group for the Kansas City
Gangster Tour on Thursday, June 25. We will meet at
St Sabina at 9am to carpool. The tour begins at 10am
at Union Station where we will board an air-conditioned
bus to take us to the different spots on the tour. There
will not be very much walking on this outing, but we will
be getting on and off the bus several times during the
90-minute tour. The cost is $25 each. Please call the
parish office to sign up.
The Gangster Tour puts you hot on the trail of this
city's most notorious Goodfellas. Our Gangster tour
features an interactive look at the Pendergast era from
1920 to 1945. TV monitors highlight this era with historical film and photographs during this wild and wooly
period. You’ll learn and see how the “Pendergast Machine” controlled the political system and the very fabric of life in Kansas City. The tour highlights infamous
crimes like the Union Station Massacre, shows the locations of speakeasies, gambling halls and how liquor
flowed freely during prohibition. The homes and workplaces of crime bosses, the sites of major turf wars are
also featured on the tour. Professional actor, Tim Phillips, plays Johnny Holiday and will serve as your guide
for this 90-minute tour. Don't make us twist your arm.
Grab a group of friends, hop on the bus and you’ll be
immersed in a melodramatic look at mob homes and
hangouts, turf wars and infamous crimes like the Union
Station massacre.
BLOOD DRIVE - JULY 12

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
REFLECTION ON THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME , YEAR B
Since the celebration of Pentecost three Sundays
ago, we re-entered the season of Ordinary or numbered
Sundays that began with the feast of the Baptism of
Jesus and was interrupted by the great ninety days of
Lent-Easter-Pentecost. Both Trinity Sunday and the
feast of the Body and Blood of Christ are part of
Ordinary Time, even though we use their festal name
and not their numbered name. Today we pick up the
numbered or ordered Sundays with the Eleventh
Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Responsorial Psalm 92 clues us in to the theme for
this Sunday, that of thanksgiving to God. We are
invited to sing the refrain, “Lord, it is good to give thanks
to you.” The verses specify why thanksgiving is in order.
God’s faithful covenant love is always there, always
sustaining us in both good and bad. Planted or rooted in
the Lord assures the just that they shall flourish and
grow as tall and majestic as the cedars of Lebanon.
Even when old age strips us of vitality and energy, still
the Lord will cause the just to be vigorous and sturdy.
The Lord can be relied on for life and growth.
The first reading from Ezekiel is intended as a
hopeful message to a dejected and lifeless Israel,
destroyed and exiled in Babylonia. Through the prophet,
God assures Israel that from this lifeless state, new
growth and life will come. God will choose a tender
shoot, and plant it on Israel’s mountain heights, causing
it to grow into a great majestic cedar. It will thus provide
hospitality to all, and all will be amazed at it’s majesty
and splendor. God lifts up the lowly and brings down the
mighty. All this is the Lord’s doing. Nothing can prevent
it from happening.
The second reading from Paul’s Second letter to the
Corinthians acknowledges that in life, we “walk by faith
and not by sight,” since we are already connected to the
Lord. Our desire is to be fully connected to the Lord.
Since we are not there yet, the best way to fulfill that
desire it to “aspire to please” the Lord always and
everywhere. One day we will be with the Lord, and will
be held accountable for all that we did. Therefore, if we
desire full union with the Lord,
let us live lives that manifest
such ardent desire.
Mark’s gospel consists of
two parables concerning
God’s reign. Parables are
stories taken from life
experiences intended to stretch
people’s imaginations, helping
them arrive at connections that
they would not ordinarily make. The two parables speak
of insignificant seeds that are sown, which grow
mysteriously and provide growth, life, hospitality and
abundance. This is what the reign of God is all about.
Jesus came to preach and model the reign of God,
inviting others to imitate and live God’s values and life
style. As disciples, we do our best to plant and sow our
own insignificant seeds – our words, our actions, our
lives – trusting that God will cause life, growth, and
abundance to happen. Often God’s reign is realized in
the most unexpected and insignificant times, places and
events. The poor, the oppressed, the marginalized and
those suffering become fertile ground for God’s
abundant life-giving growth and harvest. This is the
essential mystery of God’s reign.
As we “walk by faith and not by sight” we are invited
to be part of building up God’s reign. Jesus tells us that
God’s reign is assured. Paul invites us to do our own
insignificant part in making that reign a reality. We know
and trust that God will do the rest, and that nothing will
stop that from happening.
This Sunday, reflect on how you cooperate with God
in building up God’s reign, no matter where you are
planted. How do you plant those insignificant seeds
that God causes to sprout into majestic cedars, offering
life, nourishment, shelter and security to all? Ask God
for help and strength to do all you can do make God’s
reign real and active today.

RCIA
ST. SABINA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
OF ADULTS – 2015-2016
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the RCIA, is a
process which welcomes all who are interested in becoming Catholic, or any Catholic wishing to deepen their understanding of the faith. The Rite involves the formation
of a community that learns, shares, builds community and
prays together to deepen their relationship to God and to
the parish family. During the next few weeks, we will be
asking if you are aware of anyone who would benefit from
participation in this faith learning process. Below are
some of the values that we hold as Catholic Christians,
which we readily share with all who desire to journey with
us through the RCIA.
WHY BE CATHOLIC?
The Catholic Church has consistently believed that God
has a universal will and desire to save all people. Our
God is the God of all people. God has initiated this love
relationship with all creation and desires to bring all to
fullness through total union with God for all eternity. Each
one is called to union with God through the faith path and
tradition that they feel God is leading them.
If this is so, then why be Catholic? One is Catholic, not
because it is the only way to God, but because one feels
attracted to the things that the Catholic tradition offers.
One feels at home more in the Catholic tradition than in
other faith traditions. The following list is meant to highlight some of those aspects of the Catholic tradition that
have attracted others to it.
Catholics are not the only ones that value these qualities.
Nor have we been consistent in following through on
them. But, no matter the history, we seem to have held
onto these values rather consistently.
See if these are values and attractions for you.
1. We affirm a belief in the goodness of all creation.
2. We have a universal sense of openness to all people
and all cultures.
3. We affirm that we are all called to holiness.
4. We are committed to continual growth as persons.
5. We are challenged to change the world and society
into the reign of God.
6. We are called to live in community.
7. We have historical roots and identity.
8. We respect reason, human knowledge and human
exploration.
If you or anyone you know would be attracted to these
values, please share the information with them. Please
fill out the contact information sheet located in the gathering space and we will personally contact and invite all
those interested to our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults) Meal which will be held on Thursday, August
27th, 2015 at 6:00pm.

STRESS MANAGEMENT MADE EASY…
GRATITUDE Although it is not always easy to do,
gratitude can make all the difference in our stress level.
Our minds tend to focus on what is “wrong” in our lives. It
is designed to solve problems and to keep us safe.
Whatever can be imagined in the mind is experienced in
the body. One strategy is to consistently remind ourselves
to shift our focus to what is right in our world and away
from all potential problems and complaints. Try these
suggestions to see if you can shift your focus to
experience less stress in your day.
• Look for things to praise or appreciate in others, their
love, forgiveness, patience, and understanding.
• Look for the beauty in the world and in nature.
• Seek out the positive qualities in others; celebrate
what makes them unique.
•
Be grateful for when you can take yourself a little less
seriously.
