Thank You!
Nelson Mandela once stated that
“Education is the most powerful weapon
which you can use to change the world.”
Gifts to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving through a scholarship fund acknowledge the work of our
students and help them with the rising costs of education. Higher education is necessary for our students to
attain financial stability, and to be able to save for retirement, and allow our nation to compete in the global
economy. Every time one of our scholarship recipients earns a college degree, we improve the economy and
reduce the costs of crime, poverty and health care. Children who see their parents earn college degrees are
more likely to earn a degree themselves. Our communities thrive when the educational levels of the residents
are increased. A scholarship has a positive snowball effect—the benefits keep growing, long after the award
is received.
On behalf of the scholarship recipients, thank you! Your generosity has shown them how much the people of
their community care for and believe in them. The Hartford Foundation and donors to scholarship funds offer
these students an opportunity to change their lives. Together, this year, we will award more than $1.3 million
in scholarships to residents of our community attending two-year and four-year colleges and universities.
Your gift is changing our community, and also the world.

Hartford Foundation College
Scholarship Program
Our scholarship funds were created by people and organizations of all types
and from all across Greater Hartford. Their situations vary greatly. But they all
share one motivation—to help students afford a college education.
Because of these donors’ generosity, last year the Hartford Foundation
awarded more than $1.3 million in support of college scholarships to more
than 600 traditional-aged students and adult learners at four-year and twoyear colleges. Most of the scholarships for traditional-aged students are
renewable, enabling students to receive significant support for each of their
years in college as long as they maintain a good academic record. Moreover,
these funds are endowed, which means that the Foundation can continue to
award scholarships to area students.
There are three ways to make a substantial impact on area students through the
Hartford Foundation:
2
1.
You can create a named fund or contribute any amount to the Hartford
Foundation’s General Scholarship Endowment Fund. Contributions are invested
in our broadly diversified portfolio and the Fund makes four-year scholarship
awards—currently of $3,000 per year—for residents of Greater Hartford.
2.
You can create a named fund or contribute any amount to the Community
College Scholarship Endowment Fund. Contributions are invested in our
broadly diversified portfolio and the Fund makes three-year escalating scholarship
awards. The awards are for graduating high school seniors attending a community
college in the fall after their graduation from high school and we also award
scholarships to non-traditional adult learners.
3.
With a sizeable gift, you can create an Individual Scholarship Fund and name
specific selection criteria for your scholar. The Foundation can help you decide
how to participate in reviewing or nominating potential recipients. We will also
handle scholarship distributions and renewal applications, and help you
communicate with your scholar if you choose.

Success: When Education Meets Opportunity
A
ttending college was always a priority for Shantel
Honeyghan, who moved to the United States from Jamaica
in 2001. “I knew that this was my opportunity to make
something of myself and to excel as an academic scholar,”
she says. So far, Shantel has done just that.
Shantel was a model student at Bulkeley High School in
Hartford. Her high school history teacher described Shantel
as “an exceptionally responsible, mature, passionate and
industrious student who is driven by a deep, intrinsic desire
to excel” and noted her “strong and enduring commitment
to social justice and serving her community.”
That commitment was evident throughout her years of
undergraduate study at the University of Connecticut.
Shantel takes pride in her involvement with on-campus
activities, which reflected her interests and career
aspirations.
She served as a tutor and counselor for the Upward
Bound program, where she co-taught lessons and workshops
on college acceptance and supervised students in
dormitories and on college visits. Shantel was a teaching
assistant for the African American Cultural Center. Her
extracurricular activities led her to her passion of serving as
a resource and mentor for underrepresented college
students.
Shantel even took the initiative to start a new
organization on campus. After noticing a lack of diversity
among students entering pre-teaching and education
programs, she co-founded Leadership in Diversity, a
mentoring program that helps maintain and encourage
confidence and success in minority students as they pursue
careers in the fields of elementary, secondary and higher
education.
In June, Shantel addressed the Hartford Foundation’s
2015-16 scholarship awardees at the 11th annual Scholarship
Recipient Reception, held at the University of Saint Joseph in
West Hartford. Shantel spoke about the value of her
Foundation scholarship and provided words of
encouragement to the new recipients.
“The scholarship was huge for me,” Shantel said. “I
didn’t want to cheat myself out of a good education because
I didn’t have the money, but I didn’t want to come out of
college with a ridiculous amount of debt either. Even with
the large increase in tuition at UConn while I was attending, I
knew my Hartford Foundation scholarship would be in my
account, and that gave me tremendous peace of mind. It also
gave me an extra push to make it through.”
This past May, Shantel graduated from UConn with two
degrees — in English and human development and family
studies. She is currently enrolled in a graduate program at
Florida State University, where she is pursuing a master’s
degree in higher education and student affairs. Her ultimate
goal is to be able to serve as a resource for students of color
in regards to postsecondary academic access and retention.
“I find it extremely rewarding not only improving myself,
but others as well. I don’t want to change the world. I want
to change the lives of a few people in hopes that they will go
on to help others in the same way I helped them.”
“ I knew my Hartford Foundation
scholarship would be in my account,
and that gave me tremendous peace
of mind. It also gave me an extra
push to make it through.”

David is a member of the National Honor Society and is regarded as an academic leader and one of the
strongest students of his high school class. He is a first-generation American (born to immigrant parents) and
University High School of
Science and Engineering, Hartford attributes much of his success to the example set for him by his family. In David’s words, “My family’s endurance
and dedication to hard work shaped me and made me into the person that I am today.” David’s goal in life is to
“become someone who can improve the lives of others.” He wishes to study biomedical engineering so that he
can pursue work in the prosthetic and biomedical industries. He has already embarked on this path by taking
advanced placement and college-level science and math courses, as well as being a programming leader on his
school’s robotics team.
David is attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Konjit Richards-Johnson
Classical Magnet School, Hartford
Konjit has a fun sense of humor. She is very confident, but can easily laugh at herself, and she embraces what
some would consider flaws as part of her overall strong character. She enjoys acting and might pursue that as a
minor, but her real passion is investigation. She plans on earning a degree in Criminology so that she can
eventually become a detective. She wants to “fix the world” by becoming a 21st century Sherlock Holmes. As a
member of the National Honor Society, she organized a banquet fundraiser to benefit the Make-A-Wish
Foundation. She enjoys learning and plans to make the most of her college experience by learning as much as
she can in every topic, as well as traveling abroad.
Konjit is attending University of Connecticut Greater Hartford campus.

Gillian Hixson
William H. Hall High School,
West Hartford
Gillian epitomizes the definition of exceptional. Academically, she was in the top five percent of a highly
competitive senior class in high school. She demonstrated her leadership as captain of the cross country and
track teams, and through her participation in many other extracurricular activities and volunteerism. Ironically,
Gillian’s focus is not on excellence, but on balance. She recognizes that excellence is not always quantifiable or
attainable. Gillian acknowledges that mistakes are inevitable and that she will use those experiences to learn
from them. Gillian’s college major is currently undecided, but she has strong interests in English, biology and
economics.
Gillian is attending Villanova University.

Using both sides of his brain
comes naturally to Noah. While
the left side encourages his
interest in computer science and a
practical profession, the right side
embraces his passion for music.
This dualism is sometimes
described as science versus art,
logic versus intuition, and they are
both equally important in Noah’s
future. After struggling with

developed strategies to deal with
them, and his academic
achievements soared. He gives credit to working on a group project to participate in a National History Day
competition, and needing to stay focused on his part for the team—a skill that will serve him well way beyond
high school. Noah’s team won the district competition and placed third in the state. Even though he was
devastated not to win first place, Noah won by learning the value of hard work.

Ermina has strong ties to her homeland of Bosnia. Her immediate family fled from the war-torn country when
she was six years old, leaving behind all of their remaining family. She will never forget her roots and she uses
that history to push forward her dreams of helping others in the future. Her family sacrificed much to give her
and her sister a better life, and Ermina is determined to get a good education because of that. She and her
sister started a multicultural youth group that welcomes immigrant and American youth to come together
socially and design and implement community service work in the Hartford area. She will begin a five-year
program in the fall and end with a master’s degree in social work so she can give back and help others.

Nicole’s parents’ sacrifices and struggles to provide a better life for themselves and their family have
encouraged her to pursue a college education. She plans to major in biology and eventually become an
orthopedic surgeon, a goal that was sparked by a sports injury in middle school. Nicole played soccer most of
her life and was team captain in high school. She also played in the school band and participated in the Spanish
Club. Nicole is particularly proud of the business plan she and her partner developed for an entrepreneurship
class and presented before a panel of judges from the business community. She also took advantage of
opportunities to intern for The Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission, to participate in UConn Health
Center’s medical observation program, and to teach Spanish to kindergarteners. As her teacher said, “Nicole is
ready for the rigors of college as evidenced by her motivation, time management skills and focus.”

“Maricelis, levántate!” Being thrust into an all English-speaking school as a Spanish-speaking third grader was a
daunting experience for Maricelis, but she had the good fortune of being mentored by an English language
learners (ELL) tutor that helped her turn this challenge into an opportunity to grow her confidence and to
work even harder to succeed, cementing her love and appreciation for education. Seeing her own mother’s
struggle to find work without a college degree, Maricelis vows to learn from that and take advantage of her own
opportunity to go to college. Maricelis has a great deal of compassion and empathy for families in crisis and
recognizes the detrimental effects of those struggles on children. She hopes to pursue a career in family and
marriage therapy to be able to intervene and counsel families to become stronger.
Maricelis is attending Central Connecticut State University.

Christian Cook
Manchester High School
For Christian Cook there is nothing more fulfilling than teaching something that he has learned to someone
else. Christian grew up in an environment filled with children and, from a young age, has always envisioned
himself becoming a teacher. He is known for his strong focus and excellent work ethic, but even more so for his
sincerity, positive attitude and kindness towards others. In high school he was a fantastic role model to his
peers and was actively involved in a peer mediation program as well as HEROS, an anti-bullying group. Christian
has already started his journey toward a career in education. He has completed college-level coursework in
human development and completed his high school’s preschool education program.
Christian attends Eastern Connecticut State University.

“Caring and respectful of others” is how Brittany’s friends describe her. She is a highly motivated student with a
clear educational path and plan for her career. She has always wanted to be an elementary school teacher and
ignite a love for learning in her students. Brittany, an African American, has had very few teachers of color. She
feels that there is a need for more minorities in teaching positions so that students can relate to their teachers
better. In addition to her significant academic success, Brittany has contributed a lot to the school and local
community through Unified Theater, Class Board, tutoring and deep involvement with her church. She spent
two summers as an intern in the Pathways to Teaching program, assisting teachers in elementary classrooms,
an experience that solidified her desire and determination.

In her own words, Lily says she has always been what some might call an overachiever, but it is because she
simply loves learning. Her academic life is balanced with a love of service. At school, she served on student
government, was a drum major and played varsity softball. At church, Lily was a member of the youth group
and taught kindergarteners in Sunday School. Her experiences on church-sponsored mission trips in Jamaica
and West Virginia cemented her determination to work to improve lives around the world. She hopes to

Quinn is attending Roger Williams University.
Daniel Hayes
Ellington High School
Since he was a young boy, Daniel always loved airplanes and helicopters. That love led him to choose
aeronautical engineering as a college major. Daniel maintained a strong academic record in high school, while
also excelling in sports. He played on the baseball and football teams for all four years, becoming varsity captain
of both. As a result, he was recognized with student-athlete awards every year. Using his love of sports and his
ability to work well with others, Daniel coached town-wide youth basketball and football teams, teaching kids
the fundamentals of each sport. Taking his leadership skills beyond the sports arena, Daniel was also involved

highly respected by faculty and peers, Brennan has clearly taken that lesson to heart. Although Rockville High
School will sorely miss such a terrific role model and active school participant, Brennan is ready to tackle new
challenges ahead.
Brennan plans to attend Central Connecticut State University.
