Message
Harumichi Tatekawa, Kubota Spears
I grew up in Nara, where people are really into sports. People here love rugby, more
than just about anywhere else Japan. When it comes to Rugby World Cup 2019™, you
can feel the expectation and the welcoming spirit growing stronger by the day. As a
Nara native, I’m right behind our prefecture’s team camp invitation campaign.
Rugby World Cup 2015™ in England was my first Rugby World Cup™. It was
disappointing to miss out on the knockout rounds, but I could honestly say I gave 100
percent on the world stage. I also learned how hard it is to win a match. You need to
use all your experience to bring out your very best on the big occasion. There’s more
to it than just training hard every day. As match day approaches, it’s really important
to get yourself properly prepared, both physically and mentally.
Where you have your team’s base set up can make the difference between winning
and losing. I think Nara, my home, is the perfect location. There’s a wide range of
great facilities, and the atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. You’ve got the historic
temples and shrines, and it’s surrounded by nature. It’s the ideal setting for bringing
yourself up to top form.
I really hope that lots of athletes will come to Nara to prepare themselves—body and
soul—and go on to play in some unforgettable games.
Born 1989 in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture.
Harumichi started playing rugby when he was
four. Later, playing for Tenri University, he
helped his team win the Kansai Rugby Football
Union’s University A-League for the first time in
35 years. His powerful playing style and
accurate passes put him in the spotlight, and
after graduating from university, he signed with
the Kubota Spears. Around the same time, he
was selected for the national team, where he
has since become a regular starter at centre. In
Rugby World Cup 2015™, he was part of the
team that made history by beating South Africa.
He is expected to be a key player for Japan’s
national team in Rugby World Cup 2019™.

Smooth access from accommodations to sports facilities
One of Nara’s many advantages is its excellent transport infrastructure—in particular, its railways and roads. From a base in
the center of Nara, you can drive to any of our major sports facilities within 30 minutes. Using the railways and roads that
extend in all directions gives you quick and easy access to the facility of your choice. Numerous bus routes further extend your
freedom to explore the area in your free time and make the most of your stay in Nara.
