CATHOLIC CO-EDUCATION YEARS 7-12
Thursday 3rd December 2015
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Patrick’s College,
Two of the important values of our College Mission are ‘Endeavour and Excellence’. In selecting these
two values our community stresses the importance of effort in human life and the corresponding
value of achieving quality personal and group outcomes as a result of effort. My children often valued
my opinion of their academic and sporting endeavours, both at school and at University. My typical
response was that all I can ask and would ever ask of them is that they do their personal best. In this
way I hope that they were able to set their own personal standards and through effort, cooperation
and perseverance, discover what they were really capable of achieving. A sense of peace and selfknowledge most often comes from knowing we have done our best whatever the eventual outcome.
Last Friday evening I saw many students from the Catholic Schools in Launceston who had
achieved so much from individual and group effort. The Annual Concert and Awards Evening
was an outstanding success with students from Larmenier, Sacred Heart, St Anthony’s, St Finn
Barr’s, St Thomas More’s and St Patrick’s College performing in band and ensemble groups and
entertaining a very large audience of family and friends. I was especially delighted with the quality
of music produced by our students, their confidence, cooperation with each other and the music
tutors. Their enjoyment and pride in their performance was infectious and the way they assisted
the primary school students was a joy to see. Particular congratulations to Miss Jessica Borton
for the development of the St Patrick’s College Symphony Orchestra who performed a modern
interpretation of Christmas Eve/Sarajevo with drums, electronic guitar and keyboard to support
the strings and brass instruments. This was very moving and the quality of music literally stunned
me. Well done to all of the students, our music tutors, the Friends of Music parents, Arts staff,
Grounds staff, Ms Leigh Hart and maestro Ms Fiona Mowat who received a standing ovation from
our appreciative students. Special thanks to our Year 12 students who have given so much of
themselves over six years in the music programme and who now leave our College.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
(CONTINUED)
The annual concert followed the previous week’s Senior Art
Exhibition and the Croagh Patrick Open Windows musical and
dramatic performance. All three events showcased the amazing
effort and talents of our students and the wonderful support they
received from our equally talented music, drama and art staff.
Congratulations also to Ms Bianca Johnstone for coordinating
and supporting the Year 7/8 Girls, Year 9/10 Girls and Year 9/10
Boys on the weekend in the State Basketball finals. In summary,
both girls teams finished 3rd in the State and the boys 4th, a
very solid effort demonstrating the depth of basketball talent and
interest at the College.

Finance News
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Patrick’s College
The College Board and Finance Sub-Committee recently
accepted and endorsed the preliminary budget for 2016. The
budget put forward has predicted a surplus of $647k, with
income and expenditure forecast at around $26m. This surplus
is the result of the availability of $3m loan funds from the Middle
School Redevelopment project for draw-down as required, and
will restore cash balances depleted by internally financing this
project during 2015. The commitment and repayment of this
new loan has been factored into the College’s financial master
plan into the future.
The budget result includes a provision of $500k to undertake the
traffic management works that are planned to occur next year,
to improve safety and provide better access and egress to the
College for students, parents and buses. The College Parents
and Friends have kindly offered to donate funds to provide
bus shelters that have now been incorporated into this project.
Provision has also been made in the 2016 budget to undertake
significant upgrades to our aging IT network infrastructure.
The budget recommends an increase in school fees of 2.9%, or
$108 per annum to take the annual fee to $3,888 per student. It
also recommends a more attractive up-front payment discount
for parents who wish to pay their fees in full by the end of March,
from $90 per student to 5% of the annual tuition fee, which will
equate to $194 in 2016. There will be no increase to either the
Parents and Friends or Building Fund Levies. As the College
transitions to BYOD across all years by 2017, the eText Levy
has now been incorporated into the annual tuition fee of $3,888.
The budget has been based on an enrolment figure of 1474
students, which was the number at census date in August this
year. Staffing levels have been increased partly in response to
changes in the Tasmanian Catholic Education Single Enterprise
Agreement 2015 and also to resource key learning and teaching
initiatives, some of which will be receiving targeted funding next
year.
The preliminary budget and fee increase will be recommended
for approval at the College Governing Council meeting on 10th
December.
A summary of the 2016 Preliminary Budget is as follows:
$ Income Fees Government Grants Oher Private Income 4,934,912 18,150,156 607,040 Loan Draw-‐down -‐ Middle School Development Expenditure Salaries Tuition Costs Administrative and staff costs Operational and Maintenance costs Interest on Loans Loan Principal Repayments Furniture and Equipment and ICT Plant, Machinery and vehicles Building and Property Improvements Middle School Redevelopment Traffic Management Capital Works Karen Cole, Business Manager 3,000,000 26,692,108 14,439,000 2,175,479 2,754,600 1,693,900 469,000 898,000 920,339 185,000 310,000 1,700,000 500,000 26,045,318 PAGE 4

Remar Solidarity
On Sunday, 19 of the enthusiastic Year 11 Remar Blue Caravel
headed to Bridgewater to spend a week working alongside
members of that community. Basing themselves largely at St
Paul’s Primary School and East Derwent Primary School, the
Remar students also joined PCYC, St Ann’s Aged Care and
the Dining with Friends community. The Year 11 year of Remar
focusses on the values of humility, loyalty and solidarity. Our
Remar Blues are challenged to live with these values very
much at the forefront of their mind and to be guided by them
in the relationships they build and in the work that they do.
Over the past eight years, St Patrick’s College has developed
a strong partnership with these groups and each year the Blue
Caravel is welcomed and embraced. Our Solidarity experience
is about partnership and the belief that we enter as ‘guest’ into
this community. ‘Coming as guest’ is described by Christian
Brother Damien Price as follows, “ …the guest comes slowly,
respectfully, open to the face and voice of love, of God, that
they will encounter in the small five-second moments of life.
From guest comes the choice to be deeply present.” We walk
alongside and hope that our hearts and mind are open and that
we return with a greater appreciation of how humility, loyalty
and solidarity can be made core to who we are.
Year 11 Blue Caravel, to Mr Adrian Viney, Miss Elysa OliverBennet, Miss Norika Chynoweth, Mr Patrick McManus and Mr
Darryl Tuppen and the ever dedicated and ever exuberant Helm
of the Blues Mrs Ann Viney for the wonderful commitment they
have given to Remar’s Solidarity.
The Season of Advent
Our current Blues, having just come off their Senior exams
have sacrificed their first week of holidays and have entered
into the experience with great gusto. They are weeding garden
beds that feel as if they are made of cement, they have cleaned
out a multipurpose room and are repainting it in bright colours
that will become an artroom, they are singing for a community
group, they are taking lessons with students from Kinder to Year
6 focussed on team work, design and technology, arts and craft,
cooking and drama, and they are working alongside Year 6s
who are developing their own leadership skills. It is an intense
five days but they are challenging themselves and supporting
one another.
And they are being buoyed by the excitement, gratitude and
love of the people they walk alongside. A huge thanks to the
As we focus on the rapidly approaching Christmas festivities it
is important to reflect upon the meaning of the current church
season - Advent. Advent is Latin for ‘a coming or an arrival’. It
is a season of preparation and celebration. While we certainly
adopt the theme of preparation as we frantically gather gifts for
others and make arrangements for the celebrations that take
place on Christmas Day, we often neglect the preparation and
celebration equally important in the nourishment of our spirit and
the spirits of those around us. As Kate Englebrecht of Catholic
Australia writes, ‘Advent points to emptying ourselves out so that
we can become full of that which really matters in our lives… a
relationship with ourselves, a relationship with each other and
a relationship with Christ in every human being. Advent points
to the essentials in life, commercial Christmas hype points to
our capacity for saturation with all things superfluous, the nonessential, the superficial.”

NATIONAL SUMMER ART
SCHOLARSHIP
by Mr Cameron Ivory
Congratulations to Year 11 student Emma Wadley who
has been successful in receiving a National Summer Art
Scholarship, which will take place from 9-16 January 2016 at
the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. Each year this is
offered to Year 11 students nation-wide, who must create an
artwork in response to a selected work from the NGA collection,
accompanied with an artist statement. Only two are offered in
each state. This is a wonderful achievement and opportunity for
Emma and we look forward to hearing about her time during
this course when she returns to SPC in 2016. (Emma pictured

After our annual overnight camp, members of the 2016 1st X1
squad were keen to put the extra centre-wicket and fitness work
into action at home last Saturday. The day was simply glorious,
and we won the toss and batted. The key to our innings was a 92
run partnership between captain Liam Ryan and Jake Williams.
Their intent to score set the scene for others to look for quick
singles and put the bad balls away. Whilst the wicket was still
slow, it was firmer than two weeks ago and the outfield provided
more value for shots as well. James Baker was once again not
out and he found a willing partner for the closing overs, as he
and Patrick Morehouse clubbed 47 from the last seven overs.
We found wickets hard to take - despite an accurate start from
our bowlers. Even though they were 0-73, it was being scored
at only three runs per over. Once we made the breakthrough
(again led by Liam Ryan in making something happen) they
lost 6-15, slumping to be 6-88. A 50 run partnership followed for
the seventh wicket before we took the last four wickets for only
14 runs. Shae Weedon was the pick of the bowlers - attacking
the stumps and swinging the old ball. Off spinner Bailey Tyson
was the story of the day. Playing up in the squad for the first
time he took his opportunity, bowled beautifully and will now
join us from January 17-23 as we tour Victoria and play the
Breach Cup (v St Patrick’s Ballarat) and the Wilding Shield (v St
Kevin’s Melbourne). The squad will be presented at the Cricket
Presentation Evening on Monday 7th December (6.00-7.30pm
in the Nano Nagle Gym).
SPORTING ACHIEVMENTS
Congratulations to Kysha Hill (Year 10) who has been
selected to compete at the Australian All Schools Athletics
Championships. This competition is the pinnacle of
Australia’s Athletics development pathway and welcomes
the best school-aged track and field starters duelling for
the coveted title of national champion. The event is being
held in Melbourne from December 4 to 6. Good luck
Kysha.
Joshua Harriss (Year 10) is competing at the Australian
round of the International Sailing Federation World Cup
starting on December 7. He will then go on to compete at
the National Sailing Championships at Lake Macquarie in
late December. Congratulations on your selections and
best of luck with your championships Joshua.
Chelsea Leggett (Year 7) played off in the Tasmanian
Girls 13 and Under tennis championships on Sunday
29 November. She played against the state’s best and
was victorious in her games. She will now go on to
represent Tasmania at the Foundation Cup teams event
in Melbourne in January. Well done Chelsea and good
luck in January.
