S TOR I E S
A CANCELED SHOW.
A DEADLY VIRUS.
A SECOND CHANCE.
I
T WAS THE night before our first major gig, and
I was determined to perform — no matter how
terrible I felt. Even in the Emergency Department at
Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, all I talked about
was making it to the show. That’s about the time they
placed me into a coma.
Two weeks later, I woke up to learn that I was a miracle.
It was the H1N1 virus, and I had been given a 10–15
percent chance of survival. Two things helped save me:
the high-tech rotating bed that kept fluid out of my lungs,
and people like Dr. Keenan (Physician, Northwest Hospital
& Medical Center) who refused to give up on me. She
even slept at the hospital until I was through the worst of
it. I feel like she and her team gave me this amazing gift.
I remember walking outside for the first time and seeing
the trees swaying in the wind like they were waving to
me, saying, “Welcome back to this beautiful world.”
I never want to forget that moment.

WELCOME
From Seattle Theatre Group, a non-profit arts organization
Welcome to the “outrageously FUN musical” PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT.
The uplifting story of a trio of friends on a road trip of a lifetime, who hop aboard
a battered old bus searching for love and friendship in the middle of the Australian
outback and end up finding more than they could ever have dreamed.
Some of us are already dreaming about the holidays and the glitz and color of
PRISCILLA might be exactly what we need to inspire our decoration ideas.
To inspire your planning for great holiday experiences, STG will present a few
offerings to consider adding to your holiday calendar.
This holiday season we bring a mix of classics, family fun, and great singing,
with a little dose of naughty fun. Kicking off our holiday season is the classic
Manheim Steamroller, with Chip Davis. Experience the magic that has been
America’s favorite holiday celebration for over 25 years. Grammy Award-winner
Chip Davis has created a show that features the beloved Christmas music of
Mannheim Steamroller along with dazzling multimedia effects. The season
continues with a delightful evening featuring the Canadian quartet, The Tenors,
A Perfect Holiday Tour. Come see why they say, “Music is the language of the
soul.” Both performances are fun for all ages and the family.
Looking for something different this year? John Waters - legendary filmmaker
(Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, A Dirty Shame), and author of the 2010 bestselling
book, Role Models - cruises into town on his sleigh full of smut this December,
landing at The Neptune Theatre to spread yuletide cheer and lunacy with his
critically acclaimed one-man show, A JOHN WATERS CHRISTMAS. Putting the
“X” back in Xmas, Waters’ rapid-fire monologue explores and explodes holiday
rituals and traditions as he shares his compulsive desire to give and receive
perverted gifts, a religious fanaticism for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of real
life holiday horror stories. Obviously, this one is intended for mature audiences.
Rounding out the season, join us for Cirque Dreams HOLIDAZE. An international
cast of over 30 multi-talented and brilliantly costumed artists come to life and
perform astonishing feats of disbelief. Experience gingerbread men flipping
mid air, toy soldiers marching on thin wires, snowmen daringly balancing, and
reindeer soaring high above a landscape of holiday wonderment. Sounds like the
perfect escape after a day of shopping downtown and will be a great night out
with family visiting from out of town. Fun for all ages.
And as we prepare to close the door on the current year and open up the brand
new one, come raise your glass with us and welcome EVITA, opening New Year’s
Eve. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award®-winning musical returns
at last! This passionate and unforgettable true story, features some of theater’s
most memorable songs, including Don’t Cry for Me Argentina. Don’t miss this
stunning new production.
Please enjoy the show and we look forward to seeing you during the holiday
season!

– ny daily news
Cirque Dreams Holidaze lights up the 2013
holiday season when it transforms the stage
at the Paramount Theatre into a dazzling
wonderland of fantastical amusement.
The brilliantly costumed international cast

World describes Cirque as: “colorful, festive,

entertaining…Holidaze rivals The Rockettes’
Radio City Christmas Spectacular in terms of
production quality and entertainment value”.
Do not miss this international sensation
that is sure to bring a unique sparkle to this

– ela lamblin, co-director
Over the past twenty years, Lelavision
co-director, Ela Lamblin, has devised over
twenty odd archetypal metal devices that can
be used in all manner of surprising ways. This
performance brings together these peculiar
devices with human collaborators. Some
spin, some rock, some fly, some are worn
as costumes. Some are bowed, some honk,
some sing, some are hit, some crash. All the
contraptions are equally at home as apparatus
for contemporary dance and physical theater
as they are as devices for ambient musical
transport. When these objects are brought to
life with sound and action the results are like
mind-boggling hallucinations that elicit awe
and curiosity.
Behind the Vision:
Lelavision co-director and choreographer
Leah Mann have spent the past 20 years
working closely with Ela and his objects to
create performances in which the playing of
these contraptions is a fluidly formed collaboration of bodies becoming one with objects
to generate patterns of movement and sound.
Composer Jason Staczek (well known for his
work in scoring films) is working closely with
Ela and his devices to create new music that is
as innovative as the instruments themselves.
Director AJ Epstein will bring a fresh eye and
developed theatrical sensibility to the show.
In addition to this four person creative team,
the stellar cast includes dancers Abby Enson
and Lynelle Sjoberg, and musicians Aimee
Zoe Tubbs, Arlette Moody, and Christopher
Overstreet.

EVITA
DECEMBER 31 – JANUARY 5 | THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award ®-winning
musical returns for New Years Eve!
Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma
to rise meteorically from the slums of
Argentina to the presidential mansion as First
Lady. Adored by her people as a champion
for the poor, she became one of the most
powerful women in the world – while her
greed, outsized ambition and fragile health
made her one of the most tragic. EVITA
tells Eva’s passionate and unforgettable true
story, and features some of theater’s most
beautiful songs, including “Don’t Cry for Me
Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another
Hall” and “High Flying, Adored.”
Don’t miss the stunning new production of
EVITA, directed by MICHAEL GRANDAGE

Like a wayward Santa for the Christmas

(Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, A Dirty Shame),
and author of the 2010 bestselling book, Role
Models – cruises into town on his sleigh full
of smut this December, spreading yuletide
cheer and lunacy with his critically acclaimed
one-man show, “A John Waters Christmas.”
Putting the “X” back in Xmas, Waters’ rapidfire monologue explores and explodes the
traditional holiday rituals and traditions as
he shares his compulsive desire to give and
receive perverted gifts, a religious fanaticism
for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of real
life holiday horror stories. Delving into his
passion for lunatic exploitation of Christmas
movies and the unhealthy urge to remake all
his own films into seasonal children’s classics,
“The Pope of Trash” will give you a Joyeux

FUN FACTS
Stephan Elliot, who wrote the book,
screenplay and directed the original
film, got the idea for the film “Priscilla”
when he saw a feather blow off a drag
queen’s headdress at Sydney Mardi
Gras and roll down the street like an
old Sergio Leone tumbleweed!
In addition to a Tony Award® for
their costume designs for the stage
production of Priscilla Queen of the
Desert, Costume Design team Tim
Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner won an
Oscar® for the film version. When
accepting her Oscar®, Lizzy Gardiner
wore a dress made entirely out of
American Express cards.
The Broadway production of Priscilla
Queen of the Desert used 295 ostrich
feather plums in the costumes and
headdresses.
During the Broadway run, approximately 1,500 makeup remover wipes
were used each week and 24 pairs
of eye lashes for each performance;
175 tubes of lipstick, 75 pots of eye
shadow and 2 pounds of glitter were
used each month!
12 rolls of packing tape are used per
week to remove glitter from lips!
COMMUNITY PARTNERS
The famous flip-flop dress from the
movie “Priscilla” only cost $7.00.
A reconstructed version of the dress

Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Cher
and Barbara Streisand, before being
accepted by Martha Wash and Izora
Armstead of The Weather Girls.
Their version sold over 6 million
copies worldwide.
There are over 500 costumes, 60 wigs,
150 pairs of shoes and over 200 hats
and headdresses in the show!
There are close to 65 wigs changes
in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the
fastest one around 15 seconds!
Priscilla Queen of the Desert features
9 different styles of lashes, and the

Q+ A
Jerick Hoffer /
JINKX MONSOON
Do you have a favorite spot in Seattle
to unwind?
My favorite place in Seattle to unwind is the
garage roof of my apartment building. If
you’re lucky enough to have roof access in the
city, you have a private place to picnic in the
middle of the day. I love our “lanai,” as I refer
to it – in honor of the Golden Girls; it gives
me and my friends the perfect amount of
seclusion for our outdoor activities.
Seattle Theatre Group
and Balagan Theatre
is excited to welcome
back local artist Jerick
Hoffer (also known
as Jinkx Monsoon) to
reprise the lead role
of Hedwig in Hedwig
and the Angry Inch.
Jerick Hoffer studied at
Cornish College of the
Arts and recently won
“America’s Next Drag
Superstar” on season 5
of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
What did you learn about yourself
while being a contestant on RuPaul’s
Drag Race?
The thing I learned from my time on Drag
Race that I appreciate the most is the ability
to look at yourself objectively, and commit
to improving your weak spots. As an artist,
you have to be open to growth and evolution
in your art form, no matter how long you’ve
been working. What is your favorite scene to
preform from Hedwig and the
Angy Inch?
My favorite scene to perform in Hedwig is
the Sugar Daddy sequence, when we first
meet Luther and we learn a little more about
Hansel’s affinities for American culture.
“Sugar Daddy” is one of my favorite songs
to perform in the show.
Are you more comfortable in the
role as Hedwig this year? Should
we expect any alterations in your
performance?
I think the biggest alteration you’ll find from
my Hedwig performance earlier this year is
that I’ve had a lot more time on the road.
I’ve been to so many new places in such a
short amount of time, and I’ve seen many
more sides to the lifestyle of a performer –
26 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP
both glamorous and hideous. I hope to use
my experience and deeper understanding
to infuse Hedwig with a bit more gravitas
and weariness, now that I’m a bit more
mature and maybe, just maybe, a slight bit
more jaded.
What was your experience like
during your New York theatre début
preforming in The Vaudevillians?
My music partner, Major Scales, and I have
joked for years about The Vaudevillians going
to New York, taking it by storm, and getting
to perform our zany show all over the world...
NEVER did we think this was a sincere possibility, and so soon! It’s been amazing, seeing
everyone’s reactions to our show. I think
it proves that Seattle cultivates unique and
developed talent that incorporates a special
Northwest aesthetic in all they do. I feel
honored to be a Northwestern artist taking
our work out into the world for audiences
everywhere to enjoy.
What piece of advice would you give
to aspiring drag queens?
The best advice I could give to any drag
queen – whether they’ve been at it for years,
or they’re an aspiring newcomer – is tenacity.
Tenacity, because if you not only stick to
what you’re passionate about, but are also
committed to it enough to want to improve
your art form even at the expense of your
own ego, then you can take it farther than you
may have guessed. Be willing to put in hard
work to your craft, and don’t shy away from
honest, sincere, constructive criticism.
