Open meadows with orchids, oak trees and
hazels. One of the best known forest meadows
on Öland is also a nature reserve.

South of Sandvik you will find this paradise for
bird watchers. Öland’s oldest bird protection area,
founded 1931 by Queen Victoria, is also home to
many types of orchids.

An idyllic spot along the seaside where the
sea, the alvar, the sun and the winds meet.
The old fishing harbour has developed into a
popular marina. Sandvik’s most famous landmark is a gigantic Dutch windmill, which is 8

mill.

9 KÄLLA MEDIEVAL CHURCH
Öland’s best-preserved fortified church is
a definite tourist attraction. It was built in
the 12th century and served as Källa’s parish
church until a new one was built in 1887. The
old church was preserved and is now used for
services and concerts during the summer.

8 ALVEDSJÖ BODAR
An old fishing harbour with boat houses along
the sloping gravel and limestone beach. The
picturesque fishing huts along the shore are a
common subject for artists.

and a rich flora and fauna. Many orchids can

Shallow lake in the middle of the Great Alvar.
The rich bird life includes the Northern
Lapwing, the Black-tailed Godwit and the
Meadow Pipit. Many different orchids and
other flora, such as the St Bernard’s lily.

34 RESMO PASSAGE GRAVES
Here you will find four of south Sweden’s few
passage graves. Passage graves are mass graves
from the New Stone Age, approx. 3,000 BC.

A 2-km long stone pier was built into the
Kalmar Strait in the 1850s. A harbour project
that failed but became a paradise for birds.

30 KARLEVI STONE
South of Färjestaden you can view this rune
stone, Öland’s oldest and one of Sweden’s
most peculiar ones. The inscription tells of the
Danish chieftain ”Sibbe the Wise”.

29 GRÅBORG
Öland’s largest ancient fortress was used
during the Iron Age and long after. As late as
1677 it was used as a defence fortress against
the devastating Danish and Dutch.

In Lerkaka you can visit the perhaps most
beautiful and well-preserved windmills on

On the southernmost tip of Öland stands
Sweden’s tallest (42 m) and oldest lighthouse
(from 1785). Built by Russian prisoners of

One of Sweden’s most well-known bird observatories. There is a research centre and at
Ottenby Naturum you will find information
about migrating birds and their routes, but

44 OTTENBY KUNGSGÅRD
Since the 13th century, the building served as
a monastery and an estate for the privileged.
Gustav Vasa created a state demesne (farm for
breeding cattle) when the monastery was confiscated by the Crown. The current main building was designed by Carl Fredrik Sundvall
and dates back to 1804.

43 KARL X:S WALL
This wall stretches across the entire island and
was raised by the king to protect the farmers’
grounds from the animals in the game park.

Reconstructed ancient fortress where you can
visit residential houses, animal dwellings and
storage buildings from the Iron Age until the
early Middle Ages. There is also a museum.

41 SEBY BURIAL FIELD
One kilometre-long burial field with more
than 210 visible Iron Age remains. South of
the field stands Öland’s tallest limestone slab,
probably erected in the 1040s.

6 BYRUMS SEA-STACKS
Nature’s ”stone statues” at Byrum’s beach - pieces of limestone art created by the waves of the
Kalmar Strait. Similar to Gotland’s sea-stacks
and certainly worth a visit.

5 SKÄFTEKÄRR
A reconstructed Iron Age farm and a museum. Slightly to the north lies Rosendal,
northern Europe’s best preserved Iron Age
village. Skäftekärr is located in a beautiful
park with over 100 different types of trees and
shrubs.

25 KARUM´S ALVAR
This alvar contains the stone ship burial field
Noah’s Ark, one of Öland’s most famous ancient
remains. 500 metres south of Karum’s Alvar are
the mighty upright stones of Odens Flisor from
the Iron Age, the largest of which is 3 metres tall.
Legend has it that the Nordic god Oden parted
a single slab with his sword in order to tie down
his horse.

24 GÄRDSLÖSA CHURCH
Princess Margareta and John Ambler were married here in 1964. It is the best-preserved medieval church on the island and probably the most
remarkable. The poet Erik Johan Stagnelius grew
up at the old vicarage 1 km south of the church.

23 STÖRLINGE KVARNAR
The second largest village on Öland houses the
longest remaining row of windmills on the island.
These seven post mills form a piece of cultural
history from the days of Öland’s peasant culture.

22 HALLTORPS HAGE
Remains of the broad-leaf forest that spread across
southern Sweden 5,000 years ago. Hornbeams,
hazels, ash trees, limetrees and enormous oak trees
grow here. Amongst the trees you will find enormous
Stag Beetles, rare Great Capricorn Beetles, small Old
World Flycatchers and Golden Orioles.

Bergstigen hiking trail
The geological garden near Södra Bruket in
Degerhamn is an exciting and informative place to visit. The garden consists of two separate
parts; an information point in the northern
part of the area, and the Geological garden of
Art on the south slope of the alum factory ruins. Bergstigen is a path along cultural and natural sites - 6 km through the World Heritage
Site of southern Öland.

38 GETTLINGE BURIAL FIELD
From the ridge near these archaeological finds
you have a fantastic view over the Kalmar
Strait. The remains include a 30-metre stone
ship burial field, stone circles and two tall limestone slabs.

37 ECKELSUDDE
Most famous for being a relatively sure spot
for watching seal. Both common seals and a
few grey seals may be spotted. Many species of
birds breed in the bay.

36 MYSINGE BURIAL FIELD
One kilometre-long area with many different
burial types: mounds, stone settings, upright
stones, stone cists, a trident and remains of a
stone circle. The mound at Mysinge has a diameter of 42 metres and is 3 metres tall.

Scandinavia’s finest castle ruin and one of
Sweden’s large historical monuments. The
castle has endured many battles and attacks
since the Middle Ages and has been restored
successively. A fire devastated the castle in
1806 and today only the limestone walls remain.

16 BORGHOLM
The city was founded in the 19th century and
is an old seaside resort with special architecture. There are still some buildings left from
this era, such as the Wollin’s villa at Villagatan,
Lilla Nyborg at Storgatan, and parts of
Villagatan and Badhusgatan. Just north of
Borgholm lies Blå Rör, an enormous Bronze
Age mound of stone with a 36-metre diameter.

4 BLÅ JUNGFRUN
Small island west of Byxelkrok, 86 metres
above sea level in the Kalmar Strait. Covered
with broad-leaf forest and on the stone slabs
with stunted pine trees. It became a national
park in 1926 and legend has it that this is
where the witches fly at Easter. Ferry from
Byxelkrok during the summer season.

3 TROLLSKOGEN
Storm-twisted pine trees with ivy clinging
to the trunks. This area resembles a wonderland where trolls and other curious creatures exist. At the entrance are information
displays about Öland’s nature and a small
museum with natural objects and old forestry

2 NEPTUNI ÅKRAR
A wide rubble-stone expanse with wavelike embankments stretches out north of
Byxelkrok. Carl Linnaeus named this area
after Neptune, the god of the sea. Abundant
flowering of Viper’s bugloss around midsummer. You can see the mighty Forgalla
stone ship burial field and the island of Blå
Jungfrun in the background.

1 LÅNGE ERIK
Lighthouse Långe Erik guards the waters at
Öland’s northernmost point. The lighthouse is
36 metres tall and has been in operation since
1845. Almost as famous as its larger twin in
the south.
