be forgotten
Andre Akl
In memory of all those who lost their lives
due to unintentional injuries whether it was
domestic, road, school or others.
We dedicate this edition to the memory of
Andre Akl who passed away on May 22,
1996 in a tragic car crash. YASA extends its
thanks to Andre’s family and friends who
joined YASA since his death and helped us
promote safety and injury prevention.
YASA was registered as a NGO in 1996,
and works on injury prevention and safety
promotion through education and lobbying.
It aims at spreading awareness among all
people, especially the youth, about safety
promotion and injury prevention in order to
decrease preventable injuries.

A salute of appreciation to the Lebanese Army
On the occasion of the Anniversary of
Lebanese Army on August 1st, 2007, we salute
all its members and officers on all their efforts
and dedication as well as salute the army martyrs for sacrificing their lives for the country.
YASA would like to highlight the role the
army plays to its people and how important it
is for all of us to have the soldiers and officers
of the Lebanese Army play a role model to
help us improve safety around the country.
In the effort to improve safety, we salute the
army for participating in our nationwide effort
to reduce the death toll from unintentional
injuries and for adopting the driver guide as a
guide and reference book for their drivers.

The SCUBA diver’s necessary gear
All divers should attend specialised training
SCUBA is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. In short, scuba diving is an underwater activity practiced with the help
of a system or an apparatus (usually
a tank and air pressure regulator)
able to provide a reserve of gas (usually air) in order to allow the diver to
breathe air during the immersion.
In order to become a fully-qualified
scuba diver, one must master several
essential prerequisite physical skills.
It is also extremely important for
the diver to be intimately knowledgeable about diving safety, as well as
the physical properties of air and water at depth.
It is highly recommended that the
new diver seek qualified training from
licensed instructors.
Diving risks escalate drastically
when the diver does not know the scientific basis for safe diving and does
not use the necessary equipment.
YASA reminds that the most dangerous scuba diver is the “one alone”
which is prohibited among all professional diving centers.

Scuba certification involves classroom work and in-water practice. The
in-water practice will give you handson experience with scuba equipment
and there are some important concepts you will need to learn in order
to dive safely. These include:

composed of and how your body uses it
● Understanding air pressure and the
physics of diving

processes which occur when breathing pressurized air, including in
gassing and out gassing.

Gear up
Dive gear falls into two categories:
required and gadget. Required gear
includes a mask, snorkel, fins, buoyancy compensator (BC: a jacket-like
device), regulator (a mouthpiece
unit), weights, dive computer or
watch and often a wetsuit. Gadget
gear is usually associated with a particular type of diving – night diving,
underwater photography, or search
and recovery – and includes knives,
underwater slates, cameras, strobes,
video recorders, lights, lift bags, lines,
reels, and even underwater laser
pointers.
A mask, wetsuit, and fins are worth
owning because a proper fit makes all
the difference. For convenience we
recommend you rent a tank, BC, and
regulator. The quality of rental equipment at most professional dive shops
is generally pretty high.

He elaborates on the reason he
chose traffic safety awareness in a
talk with YASA.org.
Q: Have you ever experienced a
traffic crash before?
A: I experienced several car crashes and after the last serious one, I had
a moment of silence when I heard a
voice from inside asking “what am I
doing in life?”. This is when I realized
that what I was doing was wrong and
that I should not expose my life and
the life of others to danger.

Q: You have been to many countries, what can you comment on
the different driving behaviors?
A: In most countries that I have visited the traffic laws are respected,
starting with the driver moving to other road users. The drivers respect the
signs and the issue of the right for

pedestrians. You rarely see drivers
who are not wearing the seatbelt.
Unfortunately Lebanon is witnessing tragedies on its roads. Moreover
the Lebanese driver’s license has lost
its value and respect in many countries due to corruption that exists in its
issuance. This affects the visitors to
the country as well as the people traveling and wanting to drive abroad.
Q: What message do you want
to deliver through your video clip?
A: My message for young people
through my video clip of “Inta el hob”
that was produced in collaboration
with YASA focuses on the slogan “Do
not drink and drive”.
I would also like to ask all artists to
avoid scenes that jeopardize general
safety.
Q: How do you describe your collaboration with YASA?
A: I joined YASA because I believe
in its cause. Meanwhile, I am very
glad for being chosen as the first
singer representing YASA in the Middle East. We hope that we will deliver
lots of safety messages through our
work in future.

Q: Where you injured in the
crash?
A: Some bruises for sure but what
saved my life was the seatbelt that I
was wearing. Had I not been wearing
the seatbelt, I would have been dead
now.
Q: Based on your experience,
what advice can you give to young
drivers especially those who enjoy
risky driving?
A: Like many young people, I am a
person who loves speeding; however
I only practice speeding in specialy
designated places and using specially
equipped cars for speeding that
boosts the driver’s safety.
Unfortunately many young people
see it as a challenge as to who can
drive faster and who can perform better driving shows. They should know
that this leads to death.

World Youth Assembly
for Road Safety

On April 23, 2007, the United Nations
Headquarters in Geneva witnessed
the first ever World Youth Assembly to
explore road safety measures which
was attended by about 400 young
people from around 100 countries.
This Youth Assembly for Road Safety
was chaired by Ms. Nellie Ghossayni
from Lebanon who has been an active member with YASA since over 7
years. She was also selected as the
official youth delegate from Lebanon
to attend this assembly.
Every day, 1049 young people are
lost on the world's road. That makes
400,000 deaths yearly. We, the young
people, represent 40% of a horrific
worldwide toll of 1.2 million people
killed annually – and a further 50 million, who are injured or disabled.
Road traffic crashes are today the
leading cause of death among 10 to
24 year olds, ahead of other global
killers such as HIV, malaria and TB.
Most of these deaths, injuries and disabilities, however, are preventable.
This is the reason that nearly 400
young delegates from a 100 countries
participated in the first ever World
Youth Assembly for Road Safety on
the 23rd and 24th of April, in the
Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. This global event spearheaded
the beginning of the First United Nations Global Road Safety Week, from
April 23-29, its theme being Young
Road Users.
This event was the first of its kind. It
is the first time that we, the young people, took the lead in the prevention of
road traffic crashes. The World Health
Organization and the United Nations at
large gave us a once in a lifetime opportunity to step forward and take responsibility. It is the first time that we
were involved not only as target
groups, but as active participants.
Modeled on the format of the United
Nations General Assembly and the World
Health Assembly, the Assembly was both
organized and led by young people.
The Chair person, Nellie Ghosaini
from Lebanon, and Vice-Chairs, Luis
Escobar from Guatemala, Elise Klein
from Australia, Floor Lieshout from the
Netherlands, Precious Mumbi from
Zambia and Amitasha Sinha from India, all under the age of 25 years, devoted several months in preparation
of this event.
The Assembly opened with an emotional visual tribute to the 1049 young
victims under the age of 25 who die
on the world’s roads each day.
Nellie Ghossaini reminded delegates
that “While we are sitting here today
working for road safety, many young
people, some of whom we might even
know, are still losing their lives”. As a
constant reminder of this fact, a digital
counter “ticked” throughout the twoday event, and tallied nearly 1700
deaths by the meeting’s end.
Under the banner “Road Safety is
No Accident”, the Assembly’s opening
ceremony featured statements from
Mr. Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary- General; Dr Margaret Chan,
WHO Director-General; Mr. Marek
Belka, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for
Europe; Mr. Jacques Barrot, Vice President of the European Commission in

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Mr. Luis Lula da Silva, President
of Brazil; and Moby, the worldrenowned musician.
In addition, Alexander Wurtz, famous Austrian Formula 1 driver,
shared his experience of surviving the
highest speed crash in history. His presentation, entitled “Learning from a
crash”, highlighted the importance of
wearing helmets and seat-belts, having a responsive emergency services
system in place, and being able to drive safe cars on well designed roads.
The Assembly also featured two
testimonials from survivors of road
traffic injuries, a presentation on the
Nellie Ghosaini, YASA member, chairing the assembly
Youth and Road Safety Report, published by the World Health Organization, as well as four presentations on
national and local road safety initiatives from Argentina, China, Tunisia,
and Australia.
The crowning achievement of the
World Youth Assembly for Road Safety
was the adoption of Youth Declaration
for Road Safety. This is a document
that expresses our views on road safety and what we want to see happen. It
has been written by the youth, from
the youth, to the world. Young people
from all over the world participated in
drafting this Declaration with each
one bringing forward the problems
faced in his/her country and region.
To ensure that Youth Declaration for
Road Safety does not remain ink on
paper, we discussed its implementation on national and global levels and
prepared a ten step plan to ensure
the follow up of the Assembly.
The closing of the World Youth Assembly for Road Safety was attended
by Mr. Marek Belka, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic
Commission for Europe and featured
a statement from Sheika Haya Rashed
Al Khalifa, President of the United Nations General Assembly, delivered live
from New York.

YASA activities
YASA pursues its cooperation with
the Internal Security Forces.
YASA gave two lectures to I.S.F members about road safety on July 16, 2007
at the I.S.F institute in Warwar.
Joseph Ballan from YASA volunteer, stressed on the fundamentals of road
safety, safe motorcycle riding and the importance of a good relationship between the citizens and the policemen. All attendees received various flyers
and YASA newsletters.
Traffic Safety Meeting between YASA
and the Rotary Club-Sahel el Metn
Joe Daccache, YASA Vice President, presented a lecture on July 16, 2007
entitled: “The increasing number of car crashes during the summer in
Lebanon”. This was held for the Rotary Club Sahel el Metn in Jal el Dib.
Throughout the lecture the attendees received flyers and newsletters
from YASA that were also elaborated on. In closing the event, YASA and Rotary Sahel el Metn agreed to start cooperation for safety promotion.

YASA lecture at Shabab Al Masajed
Club- Beirut
in Ehden Country Club
Hani Kobeissi, manager of YASA’s Driver Improvement Program, presented a
lecture entitled: “The Role of Youth in Traffic Safety” on Wednesday July 18,
2007. The lecture that was held at Shabab Al Masajed Club highlighted road
safety and related injury prevention. YASA flyers and newsletters were distributed and discussed among the participants.
Launch of Road safety campaign in
Zghorta
Under the patronage of the Union of Municipalities of Zghorta, The Rotary
Club of Zghorta and YASA organized road safety conference in Ehden Country Club on Friday July 20, 2007. YASA distributed flyers and newsletters
among the attendees.
The conference was followed by a traffic crash simulation done in coordination between the Lebanese Red Cross and Civil Defense.
M.O.U Signature between Progressive
Scouts Association and YASA
YASA and the Progressive Scouts Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Baysour on July 22, 2007.
This M.O.U aims at promoting Road Safety and enhancing cooperation for
the prevention of unintentional injuries through organizing conferences, lectures, and awareness campaigns.
As part of this cooperation, YASA held a discussion with the scouts about
road safety and distributed flyers and publications.

Youth organisation.
The Progressive Youth Organization organized a lecture with the collaboration of YASA in Baysour public school on Sunday July 22, 2007. After the
distribution of flyers and publications, a live traffic crash simulation was held
by YASA in cooperation with the Lebanese Red Cross and the Civil Defense.

Over Eight years of
Collaboration between YASA
and the Lebanese Army
On March 4, 1999, we received an invitation to organize lectures for the
trainees of the Lebanese Army at the
Lebanese Army Training Institute in
Warwar. This was followed by many
lectures in order to reach more
trainees in the Lebanese Army all
around the country such as in
Fayadieh, Maritime Military bases in
Beirut, Jounieh and Mastita, Lebanese
Army Institute in Baalbek and others.
Several meetings were held between YASA members and the Army
Commander General Michel Sleiman
at his office in Yarze. General Sleiman
continuously encouraged YASA’s involvement with the army and showed
commitment to strengthen this collaboration in order to increase safety
awareness. These meetings also led
to the organization of many lectures
about water safety for the Lebanese
Army Water Base Units.
So far, more than one hundred
thousand Lebanese soldiers participated in those lectures and received
more than two hundred and fifty
thousand brochures prepared and
published by YASA.
YASA confirms its commitment in
collaborating with the Lebanese Army
in order to increase public awareness
about the importance of safety promotion and injury prevention.
YASA’s collaboration with the army
can be summarized by the following
activities:
- Participated in preparing and editing of one page A3 Size Poster on
public safety that is published bimonthly and posted in all army locations.
- Organized lectures and conferences about safety promotion for, all
new officers of the Lebanese Army in
the military school and for all members of the military service of the
Lebanese Army
(More than 100, 000 individuals).
- Organized more than 65 conferences about safety promotion for all
trainees in the military school.

The Driver
Guide:
an empowering
tool for drivers
The Driver Guide came as a result of
extensive work of professionals from
YASA International for around two
years. This guide aims at facilitating the
search as well as combining ideas with
images and illustrations for clarification.
It also puts the reader in the place of
the driver to learn the different scenarios of different road situations.
The theoretical part is expected to
be accompanied with a number of
driving sessions that highlight different
situations. All this is in order to prepare the driver for better driving skills
as well as help the driver avoid surprises that can cause tragic crashes
with unknown results.
The guide has several chapters
which address the theoretical aspects
of driver education. These chapters also address the behavior of the driver
and the pedestrian as well as provide
important recommendations for handling problems that the driver might
face on the roads which increase the
risk of crashes.
Along with this Driver Guide, and in
an aim to driving skills, YASA International has also published other books
as well as documentaries, brochures
and posters all to help the different
road users reduce the risk on their lives.
All this alone is not enough; there is
a big responsibility on the driver to
learn proper road behavior to help
achieve safer roads and decrease injuries and deaths.
Therefore for the driver to acquire
proper and efficient driving skills that
empower him/ her to avoid preventable injuries, it is recommended
to receive driver education through
professional driving schools.
This guide has been adopted by
the Lebanese army and the ISF as a
curriculum for their drivers.
