From the Churchwardens
Well, we may not have a Vicar – but we’ll still have our
usual Wakes services.
Elkstones are first on the calendar of Village Wakes with
the Wakes service on Sunday 19th June at 7pm; followed a
week later by Alstonefield with their Wakes service at 6pm
on Sunday 26th June. The Ven. John Hall will lead the
service at Elkstones - and Rev’d. Robert Ellis the service
at Alstonefield. We are very grateful to them for doing so.
But, before the start of Village Wakes, there is the
Queen’s official 90th birthday – and for which we have a
special service of Thanksgiving at Alstonefield on Sunday
12th June at 11am.
This service is joint between Alstonefield and Wetton – but
at which any and everyone from other Parishes will be
more than welcome. The service will be lay-led - and, for
those of you who remember our lay-led service last year to
commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day, we are
planning once again on something which will bring alive
why we give thanks. (No more spoilers!)
So, what news about filling our Vacancy – or at least
making an interim appointment?
We now know that James Forrester - our Rural Dean and
Incumbent of Longnor Benefice – is retiring in the autumn.
Which means there will be two Vacancies in our Deanery.
Which in turn means that there is the opportunity not only
to think about options for Future Ministry in our Deanery
(as we mentioned last month) – but also actually to make
changes.
What we don’t know – yet – is how our Archdeacon wants
to move forward.
The conclusion might be that we should step on the
accelerator (as it were) to reach decisions about future
options and how we put them into effect; thus to be in a
position as quickly as possible to make substantive
appointments to both Vacancies.
But the view might be taken that those decisions should
not be hurried – and that the appointment of an interim
Vicar remains necessary. If so, then of course it is not only
our Benefice which has to be considered – but Longnor
Benefice too.
In short, there is little more that we can tell you right now.
Other than to say that we want clarity sooner than later
(and won’t hesitate to say so to the Archdeacon) – not
least so we have enough lead-time for continuing to
arrange visiting clergy if need be.
For Prayer – from the Registers
Please let your Churchwarden know of anyone in special
need of prayer. We will do what we can to help – and with
complete confidentiality.
This month we remember and pray for:
 the family and friends of Edwin (“Ed”) Cartledge
whose funeral service was at St Lawrence’s
Warslow on 14th April and whose ashes were
subsequently interred in the Churchyard on 26th
April.
 the family and friends of David Cope of
Reapsmoor who died peacefully at home on 20th
May.
May they know the deep peace of Christ
We look forward to the Baptism of Georgie Jayne Cooper,
daughter of Lee Steven Cooper and Linzi Maya Varley on
5th June at Elkstones; and pray for their welcome into the
family of the Church.
We also look forward to the marriage of Chris Worton and
Laura Cope at Ilam on 18th June. And we pray for their
happiness together.
Thought for the Month
Can any of us possibly have forgotten that the EU
referendum takes place on 23rd June?
Some of us will have strong views – on either side of the
argument; and be only too ready to cast our vote. Some of
us will be less certain of how best to vote – and perhaps
struggling to grapple with the various pro’s and con’s.
And some of us will be wishing we could forget. We may
even be reduced to watching back-to-back “Only Fools
and Horses” on UK Gold, complete with endless adverts
and jingles; the better to avoid TV coverage of politicians
arguing the toss. (At least the start of the European Cup
starting on 10th June will offer an alternative distraction –
or make listening to politicians more attractive, depending
on how you feel about football.)
So how might we have felt had we lived through the
massive upheavals in 16th century England: Henry VIII
establishing a Church in England independent of the
Papacy; then Edward VI insisting on much more
Protestant reformation; followed by Mary Tudor’s reimposition of Catholicism; and eventually Elizabeth I’s sort
of compromise introducing the Thirty Nine Articles of what
is now the Anglican Church.
Had we been passionate about the doctrinal arguments –
and the not-so-doctrinal arguments as well – then we
might have joined in the battles gladly. On the other hand,
we might have felt dragged into those battles against our
will – forced to take sides, not daring to dissent from
whatever was expected of us. There might not have been
civil war exactly – but there surely was division, hatred and
fear.
And it has to be said that the Christian Church is not a
shining example of how to deal with profound differences
of view. Not even, some would say, in recent times either
– like arguments in the Anglican Church about the
ordination of women and subsequently the issue of
women bishops, let alone gay marriage; and which have
come close to splitting the Church.
Which is ironic as so much of what Jesus taught –
especially when He was challenged about conforming to
Jewish law – was about something far more important
than any of the details: caring about one another.
Religious doctrine is one thing. The UK’s future
relationship with Europe – and our different views about
that - can hardly be dismissed as a detail. So perhaps the
challenge is to do better than the Church in the 16 th
century - and not to let disagreements about the best way
forward obscure the values we share in common; still less
lead to bitter divisions among us.

On 8 June we will be visiting Masson Mills at Matlock
Bath for lunch, followed by a choice of a tour of the
Working Textile Museum, or shopping, or sitting over a
cup of tea – or any combination of these! The coach costs
£6 and can pick up from several villages. Lunch costs
£6.95 for one course, £7.95 for two courses (both
including tea and coffee) and choices need to be made in
advance. The Working Textile Museum is fascinating, and
the tour costs £2.50. To book a place on the coach
please ring Carol on 01335 310182.
Our meeting on 22nd June at 6.30pm in Alstonefield Village
Hall starts with home-made afternoon tea, a quiz and bring
and buy stall, before Chris Green talks to us about “Wills
and Things”. The evening ends with the quiz answers and
the grocery raffle. Everyone is very welcome to come to
th
any of our outings or meetings – for other information
please ring Lorraine on 01335 310353 or

Alstonefield Gardening Group
Our summer outing is on Thursday 9th June, when we will
meet in Alstonefield Village Hall’s car park at 11.30am to
share transport. Our first visit will be to Denstone Farm
Shop and Café (for shopping and/or lunch) and then we
move on to Uttoxeter to visit “two next door neighbours
whose gardens are varied and fascinating, and include
numerous features, such as a Fruit Arch, Natural Stream,
Summerhouses, Greenhouses, Alpine House on wheels; a
Folly, Gazebo, Stumpery, Arbour, Insect Hotel and
Wormery, together with many archways, bridges, steps,
pagoda's and a boardwalk, all leading to a selection of
tranquil resting places. The gardens display many unusual
and interesting plants, and discreetly house many
fascinating artefacts, antiques, collections and other items
of interest.” The cost is £3 for the garden visit and £3 for
tea and cake afterwards. Everyone is very welcome to
join us – the more the merrier, and we always have lots of
fun – but we need to tell the garden owners how many to
expect (so they know how much cake to bake!), so please
ring Brian and Lorraine on 310353 to tell us that you plan
to come.
ALSTONEFIELD PARISH
HISTORY GROUP EXHIBITION
Were you living in Alstonefield Parish on
1 January 2000?
Do you know who was living in your house on
1 January 2000?
The new Alstonefield Local History Group is holding its
first Exhibition over Wakes weekend 25/26 June, where
there will be a display of all the material from a ‘census’
project that took place at the turn of the millennium (called
the Domesday 2000 project) – perhaps you remember
contributing to it?. The project included including property
descriptions, historic memories, photos and, most
importantly, who the residents were at the time.
We will also be starting to build a village timeline and have
on display official Census returns, church registers, the
Remembrance Book, local family trees and miscellaneous
artefacts.
You will have the opportunity to photograph or scan your
own village memorabilia, photos, documents etc. for
future posterity, so do bring them with you. And if you
have any artefacts that you think might be of interest to
everyone, please bring them along (perhaps photograph
them if they’re precious or too large to carry – or ask for
help on 01335 310025).
In addition there will be activities to encourage children to
participate, as they are an important part of the village’s
future.

Please come to the next Wakes meeting on Thursday 9th
June at 7pm in the Village Hall. Lots of people have said
how they would like to see something different on Wakes
Day. A suggestion has been made that next year we
change the date from August Bank Holiday Monday to a
date earlier in the year. What do you think? This is your
chance to contribute some fresh ideas and voice your
opinions.
We are looking for some strong muscled people to help
set up on Sunday 28th August and clear the site.
PLEASE let us know if you can help.
We also need to begin considering who will be our new

Again, we were very pleased and encouraged with the
attendance at the first Event of 2016 held in Church on the
afternoon of Saturday 30th April.
As always the photographs were a major discussion point
and more names were added for the records. The 1939
Register of Butterton taken on the eve of WW11 was on
view which meant that you could see what your ancestors
were doing in September 1939.
Thanks to Ron and Jill Edwards for their generous
donation of a viewer, we were able to provide a slide show
of the 1847 Tithe map of Butterton. This map is a fantastic
resource as it shows who owned the land in Butterton in
1847, who were tenants of the land, the acreage and
value. The original Tithe map is at Lichfield Archives.
Thanks to everyone who baked cakes for the
refreshments, to raffle prize donors and those who helped
with setting up and clearing away.
The Thankful Theatre Event and the Event held in Church
raised a combined total of £328 (less some expenses).
The next Butterton History Group event will be in October
and is to be entitled 'Road, River and Rail'. We are looking
for any railway enthusiasts who could loan material for a
display of the Leek and Manifold Railway. More details
nearer the time....Please contact Maggie in the meantime.
Butterton W.I.
The Annual Meeting took place recently. It took the usual
format when reports by the President, Secretary and
Treasurer were read and adopted, followed by Committee
and President elections.
We are delighted that Mrs Jacqueline Sumerling has once
again agreed to be our President by a unanimous vote.
Mrs Maureen Biddulph and Mrs Margaret Hesketh will also
continue as treasurer and secretary.
On the completion of the formal procedure, including the
Resolutions, Mrs. Maureen Biddulph gave an amusing and
concise account of her visit to the W.I. Garden Party at
Buckingham Palace.
Forthcoming events include an afternoon tea to celebrate
the Queen's 90th Birthday. On July 12th Stephen Dean
will talk about The Staffordshire Hoard. This is an Open
Meeting (men allowed)
The August speaker is Alan Lewis who will talk about "
The Role of Women in the Last 100 Years"
On September 13th we welcome Matthew Ellis the Police
and Crime Commissioner. He will be talking about rural
issues. Again it is an Open Meeting to all the village and
beyond.
We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm
in the Village Hall. Come and join us, firstly to test the
waters and secondly you will want to join our friendly and
convivial group.

Ilam Parish Council
Chairman: Terry Prince 310274 [email protected]
Clerk: Paul Watson 310321 [email protected]
The Parish Council held a special meeting on 21st April to
discuss Councillor Hibbert-Foy’s relisted planning
application NP/SM/0915/0895. At the time the meeting
was arranged, the Peak Park had requested comments no
later than 28th April. However, before the meeting, the
deadline for comments was extended to 12th May. So the
Council decided that their comments would be finalised at
their regular meeting on 10th May and sent to Peak Park
immediately after. Full minutes are on the Council’s
website.
The Annual General Meeting was held on 10th May where
the Chairman gave his report, the accounts for the year
were adopted and T Prince and C Sellers were re-elected
as Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively. Full details
of the Chairman’s report are in the minutes on the
Council’s website along with all the information for the
financial year 2015/6.
The regular meeting followed the AGM. The minutes are
on the Council’s website and the main points of the
discussions were:
● The Standing Orders, Code of Conduct and Financial
Regulations shown on the Council’s website were
adopted.
● Two Councillors declared an interest in Councillor
Hibbert-Foy’s relisted planning application and
withdrew from the meeting for this item. Councillor
Hibbert-Foy spoke in support of her application and
answered questions from the Councillors then left the
meeting. A letter of objection from a neighbour was
circulated to the Councillors. After discussion, the
Councillors agreed to support the application while
recommending certain restrictions to minimise adverse
impact on neighbours. Full details are included in the
minutes on the Council’s website.
● The Council reluctantly concluded that the only
practical measure to stop obstructive parking was
double yellow lines. E Wain will arrange the long
awaited meeting with County Council representatives.
● Having already made appropriate financial provision,
the Council will go ahead with new village signs within
●
a budget of around £600. The Clerk will obtain at least
two quotations.
NT will repair the potholes in the church path and will
address the repairs needed to the parking area
between Orchard View and the school.
The Clerk will contact the County Highways to find out
when the work on the drains might take place and to
advise him about the ones that have been identified by
Ilam Hall gates.
The broken street lamp by the school has been
repaired with a very modern style light that does not
match others in the village. The Clerk will ask if it can
be replaced with one similar to the others.
The PCC is interested in having some event on the
Queen’s official birthday, Sunday 12th June, and NT
would also like to be involved. V Nottage will liaise with
them for a possible event.
Payments for the Council insurance and for bulbs
around the monument were approved, after which
there will be £470.49 in the account with a further £600
to come by way of the precept.
The Council might like to install dog poo bins in the
village, but only if the District Council will empty them
regularly. The Clerk will ask SMDC if they will do this.
The next meeting will be on 12th July 2016.
● Trip to London & Private Tour of Westminster: Our
MP, Karen Bradley, is organising another coach trip to
London and private tour of Westminster on Thursday
14 July for residents of Staffordshire Moorlands
Constituency. Full details are available on the Parish
Council website at:
www.prwatson.co.uk/ilampc/notices
Ilam Book Club
The next meeting is at Sue Prince’s, Cowman’s Cottage,
Beechenhill Farm Tel: 01335 310467 on Tuesday 5th July.
We are an informal and friendly group, we meet every
couple of months, and you are welcome to join from any
village. The books to read (one or all, it’s up to you!) are:
Centennial by James Mitchener
The Lost Years by E V Thompson
Beyond the Storm by E V Thompson
The Daughter Of Time by Josephine Tey
The Stand by Stephen King
Call Ann Sutton 01335 350582 if you’d like to come or
borrow any of the books.
News from the National Trust, June 2016
Ash Dieback: Ash dieback is likely to be present in
Dovedale, and will almost certainly affect most of our
woodlands over the next few years. National Trust
woodlands in the White Peak make up a third of the Peak
District Dales Special Area of Conservation (or SAC, a
European designation) and are of huge importance for
wildlife. The rangers are currently surveying all our woods
in order to write a management plan to make sure we’re
mitigating ash dieback as best we can, and ensuring the
woodlands are resilient and remain great for wildlife into
the future.
New Job Opportunity (Part Time)
Visitor Survey Assistant
We are looking for someone to help us with visitor surveys
and questionnaires in Ilam Park and Dovedale for 15
hours a week (to include some weekends) between June
and the end of October. If you are interested, please go to
www.nationaltrustjobs.org.uk and search for IRC38517.
Closing Date 3rd June.
Ecton Hill History Walk: 29th June - £8 per person
There will be a history walk on Ecton hill, focussing on
