Principal News
Recently all St
John’s Park High
School staff had
the opportunity
to listen to Celia
Lashlie. Celia is
from New Zealand.
She has been a
prison warden and
an inspector of
prisons, but her
most important
work for educators
has been the “Good
Man Project” carried out in public High Schools
across New Zealand.
She provided some important and interesting
insights into how to raise boys to be good men.
I have reproduced below an article from the NZ
Herald that was published at the time of the release
of the “Good Man Project” findings. Her work
is well worth reading. I hope you find the article
illuminating.
“Growing boys into good men”
Eugene Bingham
Celia Lashlie.
He communicates in monosyllabic
grunts, rarely washes, and walks
stooped as if the world rests on
his shoulders. Despite your best
intentions, he strays into temptation - fast cars,
alcohol, sex. You wonder where the impish little boy
you once knew has gone, and how on earth he’s
going to turn out to be a good man.
If the world of teenage boys is totally different to
the rest of ours, then Celia Lashlie is an invader.
She’s proudly feminist, a former women’s prison
manager, and yet she’s been delving into the heads
of teenage boys.
But despite having worked on the project for four
years and writing a book on it, she’ll protest if
you suggest she has been the leader. What she
will admit is that it took a woman to see what she
has in the “Good Man Project”, which began in
Edition One 2011

News
September 2001 when Nelson College Headmaster
Salvi Gargiulo invited Lashlie to the Heads of Boys’
Schools Conference.
The project aimed to discover what it meant to be
a good man, and how best to guide boys through
adolescence to reach that ideal. To achieve it, Lashlie
talked with 180 classes of boys ranging from Years 7
to 13.
The experience left her sure she never wants to
stand before another class, but it also gave her an
insight into teenage boys, and an appreciation of
men.
“I’m saddened by the negating of men that occurs
and while I’m very clear that I’m a feminist, I do
worry about the ongoing effects of the feminist
revolution. One is the perception we’ve left with girls
that they can do everything, and two is that we’re in
danger of some of our boys automatically assuming
they’re second-class citizens.”
For a feminist warrior, Lashlie seems to be going out
of her way to agitate the sisterhood. The book, “He’ll
Be OK - Growing Gorgeous Boys Into Good Men”, has
a controversial message for mothers, one many do
not want to hear.
“I’ve written the book to tell mothers to step back,”
says Lashlie.
She believes that boys cross the “bridge of
adolescence” between
Years 9 to 13, and
that during that time,
mothers need to take
a less direct role in
their sons’ lives - to
get off the bridge.
“It’s not about
mothers abandoning
their sons,” she
writes. “It’s about
them accepting that
for a time they will
walk beside the bridge
of adolescence rather
than on it, or if they
can’t quite manage

to stay off the bridge, that they at least commit to
walking on one side.”

Mothers need to understand that they do not need
to nurture their teenage sons, and nor do their sons
want to be nurtured.
“That’s the part she will struggle with most,” says
Lashlie. “For him to get where he needs to go, he
needs to have that space where he feels his mother
isn’t following him around. What he does know with
unerring certainty is that, should he have a rough
patch, he has only to turn and she’s there.”
The message has been the cause of strong reaction
around the country.
At one meeting a group of mothers voted to refuse
to get off the bridge. “I said, ‘Okay, I’ll build you a
clip-on lane, but get off the bloody middle’.”
Clear boundaries need to be set, but a boy needs to
feel free.
“Unless you let him go, he’s not going to be okay.
The more you hold on to him at that stage, the more
extreme his behaviour is going to have to be to get
you to let go.”
Doing his ironing, washing, and making his lunch
may make Mum feel good, but it’s not helping the
son.
Fathers, meanwhile, should definitely be on the
bridge, even if that just means taking five minutes
each day to talk to their son, ask how his day was,
show an interest.
“The sad thing about Dads was that they thought
they had to be something different. They don’t they just have to be who they are. They’re just Dad
- it’s enough.”
For solo mothers, Lashlie says it is important they
recognise the need for their sons to have time with
men. She is not saying there needs to be a male in
the house, just that there should be someone for
the boy to be around from time to time.
“Some of them won’t have anybody, but most will
4
have a grandfather, uncle, males in the father’s
family.”
The “Good Man Project” has been drawn from her
own intuition. Her conclusions about what needs
to be done, she says, are not rocket science or
revolution.
“We’ve come to the mess we’re in because our
relationships with one another have dropped away
and we’ve become focused on outputs and ticking
boxes and in a way what I’ve found is part of that
picture. We need to stop and connect with each
other as human beings again.”
Celia Lashlie’s advice to parents of boys
* Recognise their desire to live in the moment, their
inability and/or unwillingness to plan their lives.
* Never underestimate the power of peer pressure
or horizontal learning for
adolescent boys.
* The central issue is getting
mothers off the bridge of
adolescence and fathers
onto it.
* Boys like clear boundaries.
They have to be able
to see and/or feel the
consequences of doing or
not doing something before
it becomes real enough
to matter and to motivate
them.

Nulla Mann
We asked Mrs
Glover (HT
Enrichment) if
she would like
to review a book
she is currently
reading.
What book are you
currently reading?
“A Beautiful Place” by Nulla Mann
What is it about?
It is a murder mystery set in the 1950’s in
South Africa. This time is interesting as the
country is dealing with apartheid.
What other books do you like reading?
I enjoy crime thrillers as holiday reading. I also like
autobiographies and classics.
What attracts you to a book?
It is often the referral of a friend or colleague that encourages me to read the book.
Once read, what makes you like a book?
If I think about a story/ book after I’ve finished reading it then there is a lasting
impact on me.
What other attractions are there for you in reading?
I enjoy a relaxing read in the holidays or on a rainy day. I still enjoy having a book in
my hands so have not moved to an Ipad or Kindle yet.

On the 9th, 10th and 11th of February,
176 Year 11 students, along with Mrs
Stevens, Mr Chisari, Mr Edinborough,
Mr McPherson, Mr Daoud, Ms Walker,
Ms Mitchell, Ms Deveney , Mrs Draper
and Ms Tuake went on a three day
Crossroads Camp at Webb’s Creek.
On our arrival we were given a friendly
welcome from the camp instructors.
We had lunch and dragged our bags to
what would be our home for the next
three days, our “Chicken Coops”.
We were sorted into our groups
and started our rotation
through 6 different
activities. One group
went Rock Climbing
and the other
groups went
Abseiling,
Canoeing,
Indoor Rock
Climbing,
Low Ropes,
Aqua Park,
the dreaded
School
Session and
the infamous
“So Hum” activity
and Archery.
On our first night
we had a fancy
dress evening with
the theme “What I
want to be when I
grow up”. People came
dressed as sporting
stars, fashion models, a
basketball team, fairies,
Marilyn Monroe, gods
and goddesses to name
a few. Then it was on
to Karaoke. While
everyone participated
with vigour, some
groups sounded like
a cat screeching.

After our supper we were sent off to bed but
nobody was in a mood to sleep. The teachers
patrolled for hours until we were eventually
quiet enough to go to sleep.
The next night was our Treasure Hunt and
Night Orienteering game. Mrs Stevens
was bribed with chocolates to give up
a page of a glossy fashion magazine,
which was an item in the Treasure
Hunt. All teams spent most of the
afternoon and early evening during
activities to find feathers, smooth
rocks grass tied in the shape of a
bow and other interesting items for
the Treasure Hunt. Our year was the
fastest so far to complete the night
orienteering. The team who won did it in
the quickest time ever. While other teams
ran off as soon as possible, the team who
won, stayed back in the hall and worked out
all the clues first and then started to find the
teachers.
On our last day was the annual Miss
Castle Mountain. Our year created some
magnificent evening wear (out of
newspapers) for the boys to model.
Whilst camp was a lot of fun, we
realised that we had been given
the chance to participate in a
once in a life time opportunity
to build not only new
friendships but also our life
skills. We would like to
thank Mrs Stevens and
her team of Crossroad
teachers for giving up
their time (and not
getting much sleep)
to take us away
and give us an
experience that we
will remember for
the rest of our
lives.

On Monday 21st June a group of ten Year 10
students attended Parliament House to participate
in Forum 2010. We had to nominate for selection
and were lucky enough to be chosen. Forum 2010
is a day where students from NSW, both city
and country and from Government, Catholic and
Independent schools, meet to debate a series of
issues that are relevant to teenagers using correct
parliamentary procedure.
We had a very strong interest from students in
Year 10 and eventually had to draw names out of
a hat to select who would represent the school.
Our school was issued with 5 topics and whether
we were a Government or Opposition speaker for
each of the topics. The topics ranged from driving
and voting ages to the divide between city and
country people to local hospitals. Each speaker
was allocated a time limit to speak to and then
people could debate the issue from the floor. If
you wished to speak you had to hold up a sign
and the Speaker of the House would nominate
you to come to the table and have your say.
Each student from our team spoke on the day
and conducted themselves with honour. Towards
the end of the day some of our speakers were
becoming quite passionate.
When all 15 bills had been debated a vote was
taken for each bill to see whether it would be
passed by the House or rejected. Students could
have a conscience vote on each issue and did not
have to vote with the Government or Opposition
Party they had been allocated to.
It was a very enjoyable day as it was conducted
in the Legislative Assembly, the students enjoyed
lunch in the Parliamentary Library and sat in the
House of Representatives where the Parliamentary
Education Officer explained the workings of this
house. Our students mixed well with students
from all over NSW and were very pleased that
our school has such a strong uniform policy as we
looked beautiful in our school uniform compared
to some other schools. They also learnt the very
important lesson of not to be intimidated by
private school uniforms as it did not make them
necessarily better debaters.
I was extremely proud of our team. They
conducted themselves impeccably, were friendly
to all other students, often initiating conversation
and involved themselves passionately at the task.
The team were: Matthew Roberts, Denise Ong,
Natalie Stojanovska, Amy Lee, Daniel Nou,Nhung
Tran, Vivian Trieu, Jovana Zelenbaba, Helena Lee
and Amanda Tang.

Library
Here we are at the end of 2010. The School
Library continues to offer support to students and
staff in various ways.
The most exciting development this year has been
the Interactive Whiteboard now installed in the
Work Area. It has been partially funded by Year
12 2009. Staff and classes have used it both as
a giant computer/DVD screen and in the more
interactive mode.
The library collection continues to grow, especially
in the area of Graphic Novels and Supernatural
Fiction. Suggestions are welcome.
But the catalogue does not only include physical
texts. Many interesting and fascinating websites
can be accessed and e-books are to be added in
2011.
We are glad to welcome back Mrs Berghoffer who
has returned from
sick leave this year.
Please visit us. We
welcome Staff and
Safe, Respectful,
Learners.
