PLANNING
YOUR STAY
Book Well in Advance
Good planning ensures that you make the most of your visit, particularly if you plan
on visiting during the busy summer season. Here are a few helpful tips.
• Book transportation well in advance. Seats on Alaska Airlines and vehicle
spaces on Alaska Marine Highway vessels fill fast for peak visitor season,
May through September.
• Lock in your lodging early.
• Ask your hosts or a reservation service where your lodging is situated in
Ketchikan; they’ll offer advice on options for local transportation.
Packing for Southeast Alaska
Pack casual, comfortable clothing. We’re not sticklers about fashion up here.
However, it’s all about matching your clothes to the activity and if there is one
thing we have plenty of, it’s activity!
• Lightweight shirts layer under sweaters and jackets; light wool and
polyester fleece are good choices.
• Pants and shorts, a water-resistant coat with a hood, and sturdy,
waterproof shoes best fit our changeable climate.
• You may want lightweight gloves and rain gear for our variety of
accessible hikes or saltwater excursions. Sunglasses and sunscreen are
recommended, especially if you’ll be on the water.
• If you’re prone to motion sickness, see a physician before your trip.

your visit, the Ketchikan Story Project was designed with
you in mind. A series of six short films, numerous short
features, photographs and more delve into our unique
lifestyle. Local residents tell the stories of the fishing,
aviation and timber industries; share our arts and Native
culture; and offer insights into our town’s history.

SOME DON’T-MISS
ATTRACTIONS
History, scenery and the pursuit of plain old fun inspire a wide range of attractions
in the Ketchikan area. Museums, historic sites and interactive tours highlight
attributes of our town.
Creek Street borders Ketchikan Creek, where salmon runs attracted Native Alaskans for
centuries and where residents and visitors still take fish. From 1903 to 1953, bordellos lined the
creek. Today, shops, restaurants, museums and galleries welcome visitors to Creek Street.
Southeast Alaska Discovery Center is an outstanding federal interpretive facility spotlighting
Tongass National Forest.
Tongass Historical Museum and Dolly’s House profile compelling history, while athletes at
the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show demonstrate skills required by those who work in the
woods.
Totem Poles. Ketchikan has the largest collection in the world. Poles are erected in many places
around town, including Saxman Native Village south of town, Totem Bight State Park and
Potlatch Park on the north end, and in public areas throughout the community. Ancient poles
have been preserved at the Totem Heritage Center, a National Historic Register site.

NATURE &
WILDLIFE
We share our forested islands and the surrounding ocean with an amazing array of
wildlife. The temperate rain forest environment is not only one of the most beautiful
places on Earth, it’s also one of the most biologically productive areas. And you’ll
see on the map in this guide that there’s easy access to trails to put you right in the
middle of our unique environment. Plan ahead for attire that will allow you to enjoy
our lush surroundings.
• More than 250 species of birds have been identified around the Ketchikan
area. The Alaska Hummingbird Festival in April celebrates the springtime
return of migratory birds.
• Migrating humpback and orca whales, sea lions, seals and porpoises
are often spotted on cruise excursions.
• Sitka black-tail deer inhabit the beaches and forest. Mountain goats
and wolves are often sighted at higher elevations.
• Black bears may be seen as they search for food such as salmon in streams,
berries and other edible plants in the forest.

the Misty Fjords &
Tongass National Forest
Misty Fjords National Monument’s deep canals and inlets were carved by glaciers
thousands of years ago. Their granite grandeur leads some to call this place the
Yosemite of the North.
Misty Fjords provides outstanding recreational opportunities and wildlife habitat.
The monument is accessible by floatplane or boat from Ketchikan.
The near edge of the 2.3 million-acre area is only 40 miles south of Ketchikan. Day
cruises and flightseeing trips are offered daily in the summer. Kayak companies and
small charter boat operations offer guided overnight trips.
• The U.S. Forest Service maintains wilderness cabins in the
monument for visitors who want extended backcountry visits.
• Pictographs—ancient Native rock art—are etched into cliff walls
in the monument.
• Famous New Eddystone Rock, a picturesque volcanic core, thrusts high

Ketchikan is situated within the heart
of Tongass National Forest. At 17
million acres, it is the largest national
forest in the United States. It’s a vast
place: You can travel the 500 miles
from Ketchikan to Yakutat and never
leave the forest.
Around Ketchikan, you’re visiting the
Tongass—whether you know it or
not—when you cruise along its shores,
hike local trails, fly to a remote lake or
camp and picnic at a recreation area.
This temperate rain forest is integral to
the lifestyle of Southeast Alaska and
always has been. Managed for multiple
uses, the vast forest supports habitat
for a rich abundance of plants, animals
and birds and provides industrial and
recreational opportunities.
From the earliest habitation by

NATIVE CULTURE
History Centuries in the Making
The heritage of Northwest Coast tribes is integral to our lifestyle. Twenty residents
for every hundred around Ketchikan can trace their heritage to the Tlingit, Haida and
Tsimshian tribes of Alaska. The world’s largest collection of totem poles is found here,
and you can meet the artists and teachers whose work keeps the cultures vital.
• Totem Bight State Park north of town
features a traditionally styled longhouse
and an impressive collection of restored
totem poles. Interpretive materials line
the trail through the park.
• Potlatch Park near Totem Bight
presents a replica of a Native village,
including totemic carvings. The site also
has a museum displaying classic cars and
rare firearms.
• Artisans at Saxman Native Village
carving center work on contemporary
totem poles and invite you to get close.
• Totem Heritage Center is a federal
historic site housing ancient poles
retrieved from abandoned villages,
now used at the Totem Heritage Center
and are listed on the National Register.
The center has instructed students in
traditional Northwest Coast design and
Native art since the 1970s.
• Saxman Native Village and
Totem Bight State Park display poles
and clan houses. The two totem parks
also feature scheduled performances of
Native dancers.
• Southeast Alaska Discovery Center
features a replica of a summer fish camp
and a display depicting traditional Alaska
Native life.
• Tongass Historical Museum displays
ancient tools and implements.

arts & Culture
Ketchikan has been recognized as one of America’s Top 100 Small Arts Communities
due to the abundance of Native art in place and the number of working artists
(Native and contemporary) living in the community. You can enjoy artisan craftworks
in our many galleries and shops or immerse yourself in the traditions through
festivals, museums and special events – make sure you check in with our Visitor
Centers to see what’s happening on our cultural calendar during your visit.
Celebrate internationally known Native artists who work in traditional forms
from carving to weaving. Contemporary artists produce amazing work in
media from acrylic to sculpture and ceramics to watercolor.
Enjoy the diverse galleries, many owned and operated by our resident artists.
Art exhibits, festivals and special events occur throughout the year. The artistic
highlight of summer is the Blueberry Arts Festival, the first weekend of August,
with a dazzling array of artwork and public events. In the winter, residents put
on the Jazz and Cabaret Festival, as well as the Wearable Art Show.
A full season of theater productions and concerts featuring our community
band and community chorus keeps performing arts at the forefront in
Ketchikan.
We recently celebrated the Year of the Artist and published “Art Lives Here,”
a printed and online program devoted to our creative community, galleries
and public art. The book and website introduce you to the Ketchikan artists
and galleries that specialize in local and Alaskan-produced artwork.

Sportfishing
Our saltwater fishing is some of the best in Alaska. Five species of wild salmon return
from the open ocean to their native waters in this area. The native species of salmon
are kings (chinooks), cohos (silvers), reds (sockeyes), pinks (humpies) and chums (dogs).
In addition to our abundant salmon runs, halibut and red snapper offer great angling
opportunities for residents and visitors. The waters are rich with
shrimp and crab, and our clear freshwater lakes and streams are
alive with trout, Dolly Varden and bright steelhead.
There are many options for fishing adventures. Full-service lodges
and resorts offer unforgettable outdoor adventure, great meals
and comfortable lodging. Experienced guides provide half-day
and full-day charters in a broad radius.
Do-it-yourself fishers have it made here; boat and gear rentals
are available in several areas, and local floatplane operators can
transport you to remote lakes. Professional guides offer expert
advice for your trip.
Some fishing spots are accessible from our road system. Others
require a trip in a floatplane or a boat.
FYI
For more information about sportfishing,
see Member Directory pages 46-47.
Saltwater fishing guides know these waters and how to catch
and handle fish. Most operators also help you with filleting
and processing your catch—such as this nice halibut brought
to the dock downtown. If you’re a DIY angler, Ketchikan-area
businesses can fix you up with boats, tackle, apparel and
everything else you’ll need.

our neighboring
communities
First-time and returning visitors come for the diversity Ketchikan offers and stay
longer for the remote, yet accessible, nature and adventure that abound. Below
are just some highlights of our incredible neighboring communities, along with
information to help you plan your extended stay in our region.
Prince of Wales Island
West of Ketchikan lies the third-largest island in the United States. Prince of Wales
Island is home to several thousand residents in communities with populations
that range from 50 to 1,500. The island is a prime destination for sportfishing
enthusiasts and provides outstanding opportunities for camping, hunting and
hiking. Totem poles and other Native Alaskan artwork are featured in several towns.

Scheduled floatplanes and ferries link Ketchikan to Prince of Wales Island,
where visitors can see historic, hard-working fishing and timbering towns.
Recreational opportunities run the length of America’s third-largest island.

Green-painted vessels of the Inter-Island Ferry Authority
link Ketchikan to Prince of Wales Island. Blue ships of the
Alaska Marine Highway connect our island to the Lower
48 and to other communities in Southeast Alaska.
El Capitan and Cavern Lake caves are
managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
They are excellent examples of the
massive cave and karst landscapes
in Southeast Alaska.
Hydaburg, Kasaan and Klawock
are home to many Alaskan Natives
of Tlingit and Haida descent.
Totem poles can be viewed in
many locations.
The Inter-Island Ferry Authority (IFA)
provides daily transportation between
Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island.
IFA operates from ports in Ketchikan
and in Hollis on the western side of
Prince of Wales Island.
Local commuter air carriers connect
