S CVT P r es ident ’s Mes s a ge – R a y’s R ec k onings
Hi folks,, Time flies when you’re having fun.. We must be having a whole lot of fun cause its already
MAY !!! (Only seven months till Festivus) Speaking of Festivus, mark your calendars, we’re set for
December 11th 2015, it’s a Friday night. More details as it gets closer. If you missed April’s meeting you
missed this year’s White Elephant Raffle, SO, in keeping with that theme, Charlie and I switched places,
just so “you never know what you’re going to get”. It was fun being Vice to Charlie, he did a great job. (FYI, he helped
me more than I helped him) He’s going to be presiding again in our upcoming May meeting as well and there’s surprise
VP standing in. (Judy n I will be on vacation)
It’s May already, and some of you that haven’t taken your car out of the garage. (me) Shame Shame. There still might be
a chance to get your car out for “Doc’s” Oroville Car Show, May 8-10 and plenty of time to sign up for June 6 Burger
Run with Dennis & Sandy Kay as hosts. (contact them and sign up)
It’s time to start discussion about SCVT attending CTCI’s Regional Convention in Albuquerque New Mexico, coming up
in August. (26th-30th) Check out our “Fan” or your “Early Bird” for details and application forms. I’m assuming Doc
and Lucy would probably be going and perhaps I could ask them via this medium to lead our contingency to the event.
We’ve been asked by Roger Fuller from the Sacramento Classic T-Bird Club to perhaps joint them as they Caravan down.
I reckon that’s it for now… seeya at the next meeting May 15th.

May 8-9-10, 2015
Hopefully, cars have been registered, lodging has been confirmed and
the Birds have been tuned up (or will be) for the trip to Oroville on May 8.
There are 24 cars (mostly Classic TBirds) carrying 45 people to Oroville. The
drive to Oroville has interesting stops at the Sacramento Automobile Museum
and at Ludy’s in Woodland for lunch.
The Northern group will leave Costco, 1001 Metro Center Blvd, Foster
City at 8:30 am sharp, led by Doc.
The Southern group will leave Starbucks, 1197 E Calaveras Blvd,
Milpitas, at 8:30 am sharp, led by Don Reisinger.
The two groups will meet at Denny’s, 260 Pittman Rd, Fairfield and
caravan as one group for the rest of the trip to Oroville.
It promises to be a great SCVT weekend overniter.
Questions: Call Doc at 650-591-5939 or email [email protected]
On Saturday, June 6th, Dennis and Sandie Kay will be leading the T Birds on a Burger Run to 4-5 burger establishments
to evaluate their offerings. For those of you who did not participate on the last "Run" it works this way: Each team,
consisting of 4 people, orders one burger. Dennis comes around and cuts it into quarters and each team evaluates the
burger based on the criteria listed on the score sheet. After partaking of a total of one plus burgers (and sometimes onion
rings, fries, and/or shakes) we end up at the Kay's home for an Ice Cream Social and tally up the voting. This year we
plan to have most of the restaurants located in the East Bay. A signup sheet was passed around at the March meeting and
we already have 20 interested. It will be passed around again at the April and May meetings.
Please note, this event is in Santa Clara Valley Thunderbird 's club theme heard round the world.......let's eat!!
Mark your calendars and sign up at the next meeting.

June 11-13, 2015
Dyes & Monroes
The wine-pouring event is June 11th, a Thursday evening and Friday night June
12th, is optional. For the past 8 years, RiverPointe Napa Valley Resort has hosted
a winery event especially for RiverPointe guests at no charge. Local boutique
wineries of Napa Valley pour wine at the resort. Marilynn, the activities director,
has once again asked SCVT to display our vintage vehicles (any vintage car) at the
event.
On Thursday, we plan to have lunch in Napa, do some shopping at Oxbow Market and check in before the 5 p.m. to 8
p.m. wine-pouring event. Last year, 17 small wineries participated in this event. RiverPointe will again have a
microbrew pouring. After a couple of hours tasting wine and beer, enjoying the vintage cars and camaraderie; we will
have dinner at Compadres, the Mexican restaurant across the street, all this without driving our cars.
Cliff and Kathy Monroe have graciously volunteered to plan Friday’s activities.
Care to join us? Accommodations are $125 per night (plus room tax and a resort fee). Call Elaine or Geoff at
1.408.262.1078 or email us at [email protected]. We will then provide you with the number to call for reservations.
HOT AUGUST NIGHTS is being held this year in
Reno/Sparks from Aug. 3-9. There are over 6,000 classic
cars all over Sparks and Reno with lots of free music day
and night. There is a swap meet, sock hop, and prom as
well as a car auction.
If you are interested in going you should make reservations for a hotel ASAP. Most of the club members stay at the
Nugget in Sparks. If you register your car you can use your entry number to obtain lower rates at the hotels around town.
Dennis and Sandie Kay will organize a club dinner again this year for Friday evening so we can get together since most of
the time we are on our own to wander the streets and take in the great cars. Once we have a list of club members going it
will be sent to those people so if you want to caravan up you can.
The plan is to go to lunch on Thursday again to Awful Awful in downtown Reno and then go to the Big Boy Toy
Store. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at the May and June meetings.

The Central Coast Classy Birds club is hosting their 38th annual
“QC” get-together. Here is an excerpt from the Secretary’s
Meeting Minutes in the January 2015 edition of the club’s
newsletter, Coast Lines:
“Henry explained what the QC is ..... In 1977, there were five
T Bird Clubs in the Central Valley who decided to get together
once a year. Since there were five of them, they called it the QC. (Quint Club). They have been getting together once a
year since then. Last year it was held in Tuolumne .......It is so impressive to see those beautiful Birds all lined up in the
parking lot.”

This tip appeared in the April, 2015 edition of the Bird Thunder newsletter. Thanks to

Tech corner
Spark (Vacuum) Advance
Ok then let’s go out to the garage raise the hood on the Thunderbird and remove the air cleaner. We want to check
the spark advance to be sure it is working and if not then it needs to be replaced. The Spark Advance is located to the
distributor, on the drivers’ side and looks like a flying saucer with a small diameter steel tubing attached. If you own a ’56
T-Bird then you are looking at 2 flying saucers in a mating ritual. My car is a ’57 so it is a single flying saucer. (See Photo
#1, next page). Follow the small diameter steel tube from the Spark Advance to the carburetor. If you have not removed
the air cleaner you must do this in order to have enough room for this next step.
11
04/15
Photo 1
Following the steel tube (vacuum line) from the SA the other end of this line enters the carb on the passenger side,
in front of the choke adjustment, which is a round black or brown plastic looking object. I only identify this choke but in
fact the chock will not be adjusted under this Tech Tip. Now loosen the brass fitting on the carb where the vacuum line
terminates. A couple or three turns will allow this vacuum line to be pulled out of the fitting. Now bend the vacuum line
so you can wrap your lips on the line and suck. If there is a vacuum then the diaphragm in the SA is good and the SA does
not need to be replaced. If there is no vacuum, then the diaphragm is shot, bad, has a crack or hole in it. In any case it is
damaged and not working properly. A replacement SA is available from T-Bird parts suppliers. Sometimes a rebuilt unit
is available at less cost.
Mine needed to be replaced. Remove the distributor cap but leave the wires attached, and remove the vacuum line
from the spark advance. Next remove two screws on the outside of the distributor which hold the spark advance to the
distributor. Save these screws. From the inside of the spark advance a metal arm extends into the distributor. There is a
stud which is attached to the plate of the distributor. This arm is attached to the stud with a “C” or “E” clip. Remover this
clip and save. (See Photo #2)
Photo 2
Now lift the metal arm over the stud and pull the spark advance away from the distributor. Take the spark advance
to the work bench and unscrew the metal fitting which the brass vacuum line fitting was screwed into. Here is the trick, be
careful removing this steel fitting because there is a spring behind the fitting and a few other parts which you will need.
(See Photo #3, below)
12
You may not have this many small spacers or washers but this is what came out of mine and will need to go into
the new SA in the correct order as shown in Photo 3.
Now reassemble the spark advance and insert into the distributor. The extension on the SA which is screwed to
the outside of the distributor has a top and bottom. The bottom has the two threaded holes to receive the two mounting
screws which you removed earlier. With the SA orientated correctly, slide the arm into the distributor, raise the arm and
slide the small hole over the stud. Insert the two mounting screws to the outside of the distributor and install the “C’ or
“E” clip inside the distributor, on top of the arm and the stud. Replace the distributor cap. Replace the vacuum line at both
ends, the spark advance and the carburetor. Install the air cleaner, close the hood and you are ready for a test drive. The
new SA will operate at higher speeds when the secondary throttles open, not at slower speeds.
