Semiahmoo is a community shopping centre in the heart of White Rock, BC that has made a significant financial contribution to our
community through fundraising. In 2014, $146,000 was raised, exceeding the previous year by 33%. Over the past 10 years, the
shopping centre has raised over $1 million inside our doors!
This inspired us to create “The Centre of Giving” – an umbrella community relations program to recognize the total funds raised by our
charitable partners and express gratitude to our community for their incredible generosity. The campaign was featured on our centre
website, in posters and an ad in our local newspaper.
Semiahmoo hosted three “Get Shredded” events in conjunction with the Surrey RCMP which provided shoppers the opportunity to shred
personal documents. The events generated $7,319 of cash donations and 1,275 pounds of non-perishable food for our local Food Bank.
To date, these events have collected over $20,000 and 2 tons of food.

Rail line ‘patrolled 24/7’

As a result of the response, the city
is planning to meet with CN police.
“We’ll try to put forward our case
that they should pay a little more
attention to (the tracks) if the Ministry of Transportation deems it to be
such a hazardous area,” Baldwin said.
“Perhaps it should receive a bit more
time than it does now.”
However, BNSF spokesperson Gus
Melonas told Peace Arch News Tuesday that the area is patrolled regularly.
“BNSF owns the right of way and
we commission with CN Police to
patrol our property and take necessary action for trespassing and crime
against BNSF resources,” Melonas
said. “We use their services 24/7.”
Melonas added that the patrols
include walking, riding in trains and
high-rail vehicle patrol.
“The goal is to protect the railroad
and the safety of the public… through
this corridor,” he said.
Railway safety has been at the forefront in White Rock since July 2013,
when a jogger was killed on East
Beach tracks a week after a devastating derailment in Quebec.

After meeting Ellaray and learning
her “very heavy-on-the-heart”
story from her dad, Craig, last
summer, Graham said she had to do
something.
A website was created, donations
and sponsors collected, and the idea
of Friday’s soiree became reality.
Graham said she and Ellaray have
become fast friends along the way,
and she plans to continue organizing
special days for the spirited girl,
timed to ease the anxiety of
upcoming surgeries.
“Since I’ve met her, I’ve just fallen
in love with her,” Graham said. “She
brings out the kid in me.”
Graham said donations left over
from Friday’s event were enough
to give $1,000 to Ellaray and her
dad to help with expenses, and she

hopes the financial support received

will continue.
She knows that all the time and
effort put into the occasion was
worth it. Craig Lewis told her that
Friday night, as he tucked Ellaray
into bed, she told her dad it had been
“the best day of my life.”

Dress for Success Vancouver ensures that the most vulnerable women in our communities
have the help they need to be successful in work and in life. Because of your handbag
donations, we were able to provide interview appropriate outfits for deserving women looking
for employment from our Dressing Services program. We received approximately 350
handbags in September 2014 and 200 in January 2015. About 90% of the items were used to
stock our boutique, a value of approximately $3,960 in donations. The items that were not
interview appropriate were re-donated to WISH Drop in Centre and to our Shop for a Cause
sale benefiting our programs.
Without a doubt, your dedication to our mission means even more now due to the growing
demand for our services. Thank you for making a huge impact in the lives of so many women in
the Lower Mainland.
Warm Regards,

In 2014, the Cancer Society's team of 90 volunteers wrapped 4,284 gifts and raised $11,263. On December 23rd, 2014, they surpassed
$100,000 in funds raised in their 10 years at Semiahmoo. To celebrate the milestone, we alerted the local media and garnered PR
coverage that included a 2-minute segment on Global News and 2 newspaper articles!

Celebrate a Life at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre.
The Centre was able to assist our local hospice society’s annual “Celebrate a Life” campaign, where shoppers were invited to write their
name on a paper dove and place it on their tree to honour those facing a terminal illness or grieving the loss of a loved one. The hospice
was able to generate $18,654, representing a +19% increase in donations over the 2013 holiday season.
From March 1 – 8, 2015, the shopping centre hosted one of our city’s largest and longest running book sales in support of the Rotary Club.
In its 33rd year, Semiahmoo has always played host to this high profile sale that retails used books for $2 each on 45 tables in our
common area. Sales topped $37,761, representing the sale of more than 18,000 books!
To infuse new energy into Semiahmoo’s community event line-up and target high-income shoppers, we partnered with the Surrey
Firefighters Charitable Society and hosted the “Ignite a Dream” fundraiser on Saturday, February 21, 2015. The event featured 34 local
vintners, 4 craft beer vendors, 18 local restaurants, entertainment and a live and silent auction. The event attracted over 350 guests and
raised $30,000 in one night.
Working closely with the Surrey Firefighter’s Charitable Society, Semiahmoo utilized social media to generate pre-event buzz and hype
on Twitter and Facebook. We were also able to rally the support of our local newspaper to sponsor all ads promoting the event valued
at $8,844.

On behalf of all girls and Guiders in Peninsula District Girl Guides, we are so thankful
for the continuing support and use of your retail space to allow us to sell our Girl
Guide cookies. We have been selling at your location now for well over ten years and
we look forward to continuing this tradition year after year. We use the sales of our
cookies to help support camps, badge work, program and financial assistance so we
can allow all girls the opportunity to participate in such an amazing organization
like ours.
Sales from the October 2014 cookie campaign totaled %5,760. Sales this past March
2015 were slower than normal due to inclement weather but we still managed to
sell $2,800 worth of cookies.
Once again, we really appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
Jenny Hall

Dear Semiahmoo Shopping Centre,
On behalf of the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society, I would like to thank everyone
at the shopping centre for all they did to make the second annual “Ignite a Dream”
event a success. The Shopping Centre has proven to be the perfect locale for our
annual charity fundraiser. The lighting and decoration of the shopping centre after
hours lent the perfect ambiance and charm to the evening. Thank you to all the
individual shopping centre merchants for helping by donating so many silent auction
items, they were invaluable to the success of our silent auction. I was told by one
guest that they weren’t sure about a wine and food event at a shopping centre, but
once they arrived, they thought the way the venue was set up was perfect and couldn’t
imagine it happening anywhere else.
A true community partner in the fight against cancer, this year alone you have
helped us raise over $12,258 through our Community Gift Wrap and Daffodil Sales.
Over the past 11 years, your efforts on our behalf have resulted in a staggering
$105,217 raised to fight cancer in the communities of White Rock and South
Surrey.
We are genuinely honored to have the support of such a wonderful, caring
community partner and we look forward to many more years of fighting cancer
with Semiahmoo Shopping Centre.
Sincerely,
C.Halley

Once again, the evening was a huge success! There were over 350 guests in
attendance and we raised approximately $30 000 dollars which will help us ignite the
dreams of Surrey’s most resilient and financially challenged students. The efforts of all
the staff at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre leading up to the event and during the event
were critical to the success of this great evening and to the “Ignite a Dream” program.
Again, many thanks for taking the time and effort to work so hard with us. It was truly
invaluable to have such professionals working with us to make sure our charity event
was a success. It is thanks to such partners as Semiahmoo Shopping Centre that we
can help support a great program like “Ignite a Dream”. Thank you for partnering with
us and we look forward to working with you again next year when we host an even
bigger and better event.
Sincerely,

charitable partners were able raise over $146,150, in just over one year. This represented an incredible +33% increase over last year’s
fundraising levels demonstrating that our commitment to community relations paid off! The goodwill that our program has delivered has
been immeasurable!
