PROGRESSIVE
T
CHRISTIANITY
Welcome to Cathedral of Hope
oday we will conclude our sermon series, “Forward by
Faith”. Over the past few
weeks we have been intentional
about our consideration of the
term “Progressive Christianity”
(see “The 8 Principles” on p. 9) and
have discovered, together, what
we mean when we use the term
“progressive” here at Cathedral of
Hope.
As we conclude this sermon series
we do reflect on the desire for
progressive Christians to be concerned with issues of peace and
justice. We consider our role as activists and agents of change.
It is said that as we transform ourselves we are transforming
the world.
I believe that our transformation into the likeness of Christ
causes the transformation of the world. Just as Jesus transformed the lives of those early disciples, so the Spirit of
Christ transforms. It changes us which, like the ripples on the
waters, transforms others.
Jesus teaches us peace – a peace that passes all understanding and a peace that flows from justice for all humankind
and for the earth that we inhabit. Progressive Christians care
about justice for the earth and justice for all of its inhabitants.
As people of faith ,we are called to protect the integrity and
uniqueness of those with whom we share this journey.
Cathedral of Hope has a long history of working in the field
of Peace and Justice, birthing Hope for Peace and Justice, an
organization that today partners with many communities of
faith, raising its religious voice in support of the marginalized
and oppressed in our world.
Next Sunday, we begin a new sermon series: CoExist:
“Playing in the Sandbox Together”. Throughout the month of
September we will come to a better understanding of the great
invitation of Jesus to “Love our Neighbor”.
As we worship today, may we find the peace and justice that
we long for, for ourselves and for the world.

Today’s Processional Hymn is a
marriage of old and (relatively)
new. The lyrics of For the Healing of the Nations were written in
1965 by Fred Kaan (1929-2009).
Kaan was known and honored
throughout the English speaking
world as a hymn writer. Born in
Haarlem, Netherlands, he lived
through the Nazi occupation,
witnessing the death of three
grandparents from starvation.
His parents were involved in the
resistance movement, taking refugees into their home. Kaan was
profoundly influenced by these
early experiences, and became
a pacifist and devoted his life to
the work of the church in Great
Britain, Sweden, and the United
States. The opening phrase of this
hymn text is a direct quote from a
vision of heaven found in Revelation 22: “In the midst of the street
of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which
bore twelve manner of fruits, and
yielded her fruit every month: and
the leaves of the tree were for the
healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22: 2 KJV)

HEBREW LESSON

Isaiah 32:1-8 The Message
But look! A monarch will rule in the right way, and their leaders will carry out justice.
Each one will stand as a shelter from high winds, provide safe cover in stormy weather.
Each will be cool running water in parched land, a huge granite outcrop giving shade in the desert.
Anyone who looks will see, anyone who listens will hear.
The impulsive will make sound decisions, the tongue-tied will speak with eloquence.
No more will fools become celebrities, nor crooks be rewarded with fame.
For fools are fools and that’s that, thinking up new ways to do mischief.
They leave a wake of wrecked lives and lies about God,
Turning their backs on the homeless hungry, ignoring those dying of thirst in the streets.
And the crooks? Underhanded sneaks they are, inventive in sin and scandal,
Exploiting the poor with scams and lies, unmoved by the victimized poor.
But those who are noble make noble plans, and stand for what is noble.

pre-twentieth century composers. Purcell began his musical life as a boy chorister. At the age of seventeen he was appointed the organist of Westminster
Abbey. In addition to countless anthems and choral works, Purcell composed a large amount of music for the theater. Toward the end of his life he was
organist for both Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal. This majestic hymntune bears the name WESTMINSTER ABBEY in honor of Purcell’s long as2

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Come, Holy Spirit.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O God.
Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.
He warned them not to tell others about him. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet
Isaiah: “You are my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit
on you, and you will proclaim justice to the nations. You will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear
your voice in the streets. You will not break the bruised reed of snuff out the smoldering wick until
justice is led to victory. In your name the nations will put their hope.”

Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas
Look at the World (on p. 2)
The Anthem this morning is by prolific British composer John Rutter (b. 1945). Rutter is best known for his choral compositions including Christmas carols, anthems and extended works such as the Gloria, Magnificat, and Requiem. Look at the World was written in 1996 and originally scored for children’s
voices. It is an uplifting and optimistic piece which promotes global-mindedness while praising the Creator. Rutter’s unique gift for crafting fresh and
memorable tunes is much in evidence in the lilting melody and beautiful orchestration.
Nella Fantasia (on p. 4)
Nella Fantasia (In My Fantasy or In My Imagination) is a popular classical crossover song. The melody is based on the instrumental piece Gabriel’s Oboe
written by composer Ennio Morricone for the 1986 movie The Mission. The Italian lyrics are by Chiara Ferraù. It was first recorded by Sarah Brightman in
1988, and has since been covered by artists such as Jackie Evancho, Celtic Woman, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The version sung today is based
3
on the arrangement recorded by Il Divo.

In my imagination I see a just world,
everyone lives in peace and in honesty there.
I dream of souls that are always free, like the clouds that fly,
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul.
In my imagination I see a bright world, even the night is less dark there.
I dream of souls that are always free, like clouds that fly.
In my imagination there exists a warm wind,
that breathes on the cities, like a friend.
I dream of souls that are always free, like clouds that fly,
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul.

MUSIC DURING COMMUNION
TO OUR GUESTS
Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open Communion. We understand the sharing of
the bread and the cup in Jesus’ name to be a representation of an ancient vision
of God’s feast for all people. We don’t require you to be a member of this church,
or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at
the ushers’ direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on
your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your
hands in front of you as you come to receive Communion.
All Are Welcome
Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live,
A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive.
Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace;
Here the love of Christ shall end divisions:
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.
Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat;
A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet.
Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space;
As we share in Christ the feast that frees us:
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.
Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard
And loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word.
Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace,
Let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

You Know My Name
You are my Maker, you formed my heart.
Before even time began, my life was in your hands.
You know my name. You know my ev’ry thought. You see each tear that falls, and hear me when I call.
You are my Maker, you call me your own.
You’ll never leave me no matter where I go.
You know my name. You know my ev’ry thought. You see each tear that falls, and hear me when I call.
You hear me when I call. You hear me when I call.

Children’s Ministry
Here we grow again. Last week there were 46 children participating in our firstclass children’s ministry that includes infant and child care, children’s church
and children’s Sunday school (four years to 4th grade). With so many children
we are expanding our team of volunteer teachers and workers. Join the team
now! No experience necessary, just a desire to work with children and provide a
safe and fun learning experience. Children’s parents are especially encouraged
to participate. For the safety of our children those who work with minors must
pass a criminal background check. Sign up today at our table in the Narthex.

Children’s Church
T
his week in Children’s Church in
our illustrated PowerPoint Series
of lessons, Women Who Changed
their History, we will be considering
the story of the first person the Bible
designates as a Prophet: the heroic
and resourceful older sister of Moses,
the Prophet Miriam. She was called
a prophet since she proclaimed the
works of God in the Song of the Seas,
also called The Song of Miriam, which
Moses himself is also recorded as singing. We will talk about how Miriam
and these other very human individuals of the ancient stories sometimes
just could not contain themselves and
would burst into joyous songs about
their relationship with God. We will
also celebrate Labor Day Weekend
with a special craft by making
Miriam’s Tambourine, the instrument
she used to keep rhythm as she led the
Children of Israel in their own celebration of a national and religious holiday
that would later be called Passover.
The Prophet Miriam spreads the word.
Each week, Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations
for use in the Children’s Church PowerPoint lessons.

Running Toward Evil.
by Rev. D r. Jeff H ood, Interim Executive D irector
Mornings are hard. I think m y m edicine gets low. Placing one foot in front of the other,
I pushed toward the bathroom and took a pill. Immediately, I start feeling better. I always take
the pill before I see m y kids.
Though I speak on m any panels, I w as nervous about this one. Often, I find it difficult to talk about suffering from B ipolar Disorder in public. People can be very nasty. Regardless, I pushed ahead. The church is a long drive from our house. I w as thinking the entire w ay. When I arrived, I w as thankful for the encouraging embrace of m y dear friend the m inister. Before I knew it, the panel commenced.
"I believe in evil personified." Everyone in the room jumped a bit. While describing m y experiences serving as a m ental health chaplain in F ort Worth, I stumbled into a description of my belief in the personification of evil. Throughout the panel, I succinctly described w hat it w as like to be a Christian suffering from B ipolar Disorder. Now, I w as tasked w ith talking further about possession.
When people kept asking about m y suspicions w ith regard to m ental illness or possession in a number of m ass shootings, I replied that w e don't always know w hat's going on inside someone.
Whatever these killers are suffering from, w e know they're sick. Jesus said, "I w as sick and you visited m e." Looking into the audience, I asked, "How m any times have you visited these sickest amongst us?”
A lady ran up to m e after the panel and declared, “I think that Dylann Roof is pure evil.”
Immediately, I replied, "Well if you think he is that sick, I guess all of us w ho love Jesus should run toward him as fast as w e can." The greater the sickness...the greater our love response should be. Instead of trying to explain acts of evil, m aybe w e should just start running toward the perpetrator.
That's w hat Jesus does.
Amen.
