Schlarman Academy celebrated Homecoming the week of September 21–26th. The senior class
sponsored several spirit-filled activities for the students throughout the week including class unity with
Color War t-shirts, lunch on the lawn, theme days, class competitions, dodgeball, ironman volleyball,
powder puff football, and a bonfire.
On Friday evening, September 25th, a large crowd of Schlarman students, parents, alumni, and
football fans gathered on Drummy Field to watch our Hoopeston/Schlarman football team take on area
rival Salt Fork. During half-time the 2015 Homecoming Court was honored, the Hoopeston Area
Marching Band performed, and the Schlarman Cheerleaders did a special routine. Seniors Elly
Sermersheim and Lane DePratt were announced as Homecoming Queen and King.
The next evening concluded the week with the Homecoming dance and coronation held in the Paul C.
Shebby Gymnasium. It was both a great evening and week with many cherished memories.
A LETTER FROM...MRS. LEWIS
Dear Friends of Schlarman,
Schlarman Academy is continuing to build upon its academic success! The following graph is
a comparison of our ACT scores to the schools in the county. When public schools report to
the state, the score reported is the college readiness score. Each subject area is also reported.
The subject matter scores are then used to create a composite score. All of the scores are reported as a percentage of students who score at or above the benchmark score. When looking
at the graph, the schools are compared in each subject area by the number of students at or
above the benchmark score for the subject area. The average score for a student nationally is a 21 on the ACT. The
college readiness score for a school is calculated as the percentage of students who score at or above a 21. This score
indicates students can maintain a minimum of a B in college course work. As shown on the graph, Schlarman’s college readiness score indicator is a 68%. When comparing the average Schlarman ACT score of a 23.2, it is higher
than the state average of a 20.7 and slightly lower than the Diocese average of 23.9. It is also the highest of all Vermilion County, Illinois, schools. The highest state average (Connecticut) in the nation is a 24. Preparing our students
for the future is our primary goal!
Our athletic department continues to strive for the best! We have seen continued success through 7th and 8th grade
girls basketball playing in state. The high school girls basketball team is ranked 4th in the state. We added new
coaches to the athletic department bringing experience to the teams. John Spezia joined Schlarman coaching high
school boys basketball. We are excited for the future of Schlarman athletics!
As we continue through the holiday season, we keep the Spirit close to our hearts. Our students begin each week
with a prayer service around our Advent wreath. Students continue to utilize the beautiful chapel through weekly
prayer and Rosary services. We have a prayer book outside of the chapel to keep those close to us in our daily prayers. We invite those interested to please join our weekly Masses. Contact the school for a schedule.
Sincerely,
Gail Lewis
Schlarman Academy Principal

A LETTER FROM...MRS. DIETZEN
Dear Schlarman Family & Friends,
Time, talent and treasure are what we want our students to give when they serve and
give back to our community. We have a great bunch of kids at Schlarman Academy who
go above and beyond of what is expected of them.
We are certainly blessed by our Schlarman students. These students help a number of
local organizations, as well as our parishes in the Vicariate. Here is a short list of places
where our students give their time, talent and treasure: VA Illiana Health Care System,
our parishes by altar serving and events, Festival of Trees, Women’s Care Clinic Annual Banquet,
Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Sales, Saints Football, South Campus by tutoring the younger
students, Habitat for Humanity Re-Sale Store, YWCA Women’s Center, Danville Public Library,
Crosspoint Human Services, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Carle Clinic, AmeriCorps summer work, St.
James United Methodist Church Food Pantry, and Totus Tuus Ministry.
Mrs. Francee Davis does an excellent job at the North Campus in keeping track of our students’ service
hours, as well as the many organizations who may need help through Schlarman’s Faith Alive program.
By the time our students are seniors, they will have gone beyond what they are expected to do. This says
so much for their service commitment which definitely reaches beyond Schlarman when they leave.
Our South Campus students are no strangers to serving others. This
Christmas season grades 4-6 decorated/prepared gift bags for the
Adopt-A-Senior program through a ministry organization called
Neighbor Love. These gift bags will be delivered to nursing home
residents. On a regular basis our South Campus students take part in
pet therapy by visiting North Logan Healthcare with a puppy from the
Vermilion County Animal Shelter.
Three of our Freshman boys did go above and beyond the parameters
with a project they chose to do for the Festival of Trees. It was decided among the three to do a project
to remember those who lost their lives to cancer and honor those who have survived cancer. So, in Mrs.
Donna Baldwin’s (‘71) Art Class, these boys made their list of names and
created a giant pink ribbon. The names were listed all over the ribbon. The
finished creation was then auctioned off at the Festival of Trees Sponsors’
Dinner for $900. This money stays local to benefit cancer treatment and
patients. We are very proud of Thomas, Anthony and Tom for their time,
talent and treasure.
Everything I have listed is just a sampling of what Schlarman Academy
students do year-round for our community as a whole. Before Christmas, all
Schlarman Academy students raised funds for food baskets and Toys for Tots,
as well as collected hats, gloves and socks. We are certainly proud of all of
them. Amazing things continue at Schlarman Academy!
Sincerely,
Christina (Thompson) Dietzen ‘87

A LETTER FROM...FR. PAT O’NEAL
Hello Schlarman Family!
It’s been a busy Autumn here at Schlarman Academy. In early October, Bishop
Jenky celebrated Mass with our entire student body, and blessed a beautiful painting
of our patron, St. Joseph, which I hope to have displayed soon near the main entrance
of the North Campus building. As of this writing, we are preparing some of our
students for the Sacrament of Confirmation, which will be celebrated on 10
November, at St. Mary’s Church in Westville. In December, we and the entire Church throughout the
world will begin to celebrate the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, beginning on 8 December, the
solemnity of Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception.
During the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has encouraged us as members of the Church to seek the mercy
of God in the Sacrament of Penance, and to extend that mercy of God to others by being merciful to
them. It is the Pope’s desire that all the faithful perform the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy,
especially during the Year of Mercy.
The Spiritual Works of Mercy are Instruct the Uninformed, Pray for the Living & the Dead, Correct
Sinners, Counsel the Doubtful, Console the Sorrowful, Bear Wrongs Patiently, and Forgive Offenses
Willingly. The Corporal Works of Mercy are Feed the Hungry, Clothe the Naked, Give Drink to the
Thirsty, Visit the Sick, Comfort the Imprisoned, Shelter the Homeless, and Bury the Dead. Our religion
classes in all grades will focus on how we can do these in each of our lives, according to our abilities.
As a pastor and chaplain, one of my great joys is sharing the gift of God’s mercy in hearing confessions.
We offer the Sacrament of Penance regularly at our North Campus, each Friday afternoon, along with
Eucharistic Adoration.
One thing that does sadden me is to hear a young person confess that they do not participate in Mass
regularly each Sunday. My fellow priests in our diocese, and my priest friends in other parts of the
country, share that sadness. Parents, grandparents, guardians - please, make sure to help our young
people get to Mass each Sunday, or Saturday evening. Teach them by your own example.
Keeping the Sabbath holy is a Divine commandment, as well as a precept of the Church. To deliberately
miss participating in Mass on Sundays or Saturday evenings is still considered a serious (mortal) sin, in
which we lose our share in Divine Life, and because of that, we need to be forgiven in confession before
receiving the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. The Church has not, and cannot, change that commandment.
I encourage you all - alumni, parents, students, faculty and staff - to celebrate God’s love and mercy in
the Sacrament of Penance, as often as you need to, especially during the Holy Year of Mercy. That
mercy transforms us and can change our world!
Wishing you the rich blessings of the Lord, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Patrick O’Neal

Dear Friends of Schlarman,
World Issues with Ms. Sacheli
Learn...Discuss...Analyze...Debate...This is what some of our Schlarman Academy students are doing this
year in Ms. Anne Sacheli’s World Issues class. The World Issues class has been added to the curriculum as
an elective for our high-school-aged students. Ms. Sacheli said they peruse the Wall
Street Journal everyday as well as other resources. The class talks about current events
and has identified subjects that are world issues such as energy, ISIS, global warming,
cyber attacks, refugee camps, political campaigns and voting rights. Ms. Sacheli knows
critical thinking and logic are important in the class and for her students. They will be
studying both sides of a topic. She said, “All points of view are acceptable as long as
supported with logic and fact.”
Ms. Sacheli has great excitement and plans for her class

ACADEMY HAPPENINGS
French Teaching Assistant
Enjoying His Time
At Schlarman Academy
His name is Lucas Martin, and he has been with us at Schlarman Academy North since August. Mr. Martin
is from France and serves as an assistant teacher at the Academy through the Amity Program which helps
provide oversees opportunities for young men and women who wish to experience the education system in
another country.
Mr. Martin has been sharing his time this semester with both Mrs. Sharon Oakwood’s history classes and
Madame Cooper’s French classes. The students are enjoying his involvement in the classes. “We want him
back next year!” says Maddie Winn, freshman. Her classmate Carrigan Gard adds “He’s so involved with
the lesson. He’s creative; he makes learning fun.” Working with Mr. Martin, according to Mrs. Oakwood,
has been phenomenal. Madáme Cooper appreciates his creativity and the fun he brings to the classroom.
He is a man of international intrigue, having travelled extensively and learned various languages. Korea, especially, has made an impact on Mr. Martin and he has taught himself (well, mostly) to speak Korean as
well as almost flawless English and Italian. After his American experience, he plans to work for a year in
Korea where he has made many friends and LOVES the food, the spicier the better!
The recent Paris terrorist events have been difficult for Mr. Martin, but he was reassured after hearing from
family and friends. He plans a trip to New York City soon where his main objective is to eat in all the different restaurants, especially the Asian ones. He’d love to get to California but doesn’t anticipate that dream
coming to fruition. When asked about his impressions about the USA, Mr. Martin said he is surprised by
how everything seems bigger than in France: the homes, the cars, the spaces.
The Jim and Sharon McMahon family has helped make this win/win situation possible for Schlarman. They
have opened their home and hearts to Lucas who says he feels like “part of the family.” It’s been a great experience, and Schlarman will always treasure our time with Monsieur Martin and his smile, enthusiasm and
dedication.
Lowe’s Visits the Kindergarten Class
Lowe’s Home Improvement store came to Mrs. Lukas’ Kindergarten class at Schlarman Academy’s South
Campus and helped the students build school houses. It was certainly a fun (and loud) time. Thanks Lowe’s
for helping out in the classroom!

schools in Vermilion County (public and private). Without their
financial support and employee volunteers these programs would not
be available to the students of Vermilion County, Illinois.
Honoring Our Veterans
Schlarman Academy paid tribute to our
Veterans on Veteran’s Day with a prayer
service around the North Campus
flagpole. Faculty, staff and students
recited prayers and poems. Bryce Vorick
and Ely Dunham raised the flag in honor
of our Veterans. Vorick ended the
service with the playing of Taps. This
day, as well as the entire week, was filled
with many Veteran’s projects and
discussions. Several of our classes at the
North and South Campuses made cards
to be distributed to the VA Illiana
Healthcare.
The Kindergarten class
discussed Veterans in their Weekly
Reader lesson. The 7th and 8th grade
Religion classes prayed the rosary and
offered it up for the Veterans living and
deceased. The 7th and 8th grade English
classes discussed Veterans day and wrote
letters to soldiers for Operation Gratitude
to be included in care packages. Thank
you Veterans!
This summer Schlarman Academy decided to add PLTW (Project
Lead the Way) Launch to the 5-6 curriculum. Schlarman Academy
teacher Michele Winn was trained to become a nationally certified
PLTW Launch teacher. National certification is a requirement of the
program.
The 10 VEX Robotic kits are part of the curriculum and valued at
$3,000 total. There are two units of study that will be using the kits:
Robotics and Automation. Students explore the ways robots are used
in today's work and their impact on society/environment. Students
learn about robotic components as they build and test mobile robots
that may be controlled remotely. The second unit is a robot
challenge to program the robots to perform a set of tasks.
Students will expand their knowledge of robotic programming at the
junior high level through Gateway to Technology and the automation
and robotic unit focusing on the design and programming of more
advanced robots.
High school students can continue to develop their STEM
knowledge by enrolling in Project Lead the Way through College
Express programs. Students can to earn 13 college credits by
enrolling in Principles of Engineering, Introduction to Engineering,
Digital Electronics and CIM-Computer Integration Modeling. High
school classes are dual credit.

ATHLETIC SPOTLIGHT
John Spezia Joins Schlarman As Boys Basketball Head Coach
Over 30 years of basketball experience comes along with John Spezia as the new
Boys Basketball coach for Schlarman Academy.
Coach Spezia’s resume is extensive from coaching youth sports to giving sports
tourism presentations on an international level. His many accomplishments include
over 500 game wins as a high school, college and professional coach. He was inducted in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and was named
National Junior College Division II Athletic Director of the Year, and twice earned
National Junior College Division II Coach of the Year honors. Last year, Coach Spezia retired as athletic director and head basketball coach at Milford High School,
where he led the Bearcats to a 25-2 overall record and a Sweet 16 appearance in
2015.
Coach Spezia can bring a lot to Schlarman. Spezia says, “ I bring a long history
of coaching, administrative experience, contacts and success both at the high school and collegiate level! I
have a passion to help young people reach their potential and be better basketball players and productive
people in our society. Having sent over 200 former players on to college and seeing them prosper in various careers is very special to me.”
Currently, Coach Spezia is also the General Manager and Head Men’s Basketball Coach of the Champaign Swarm of the Midwest Professional Basketball Association. He says, “The balance between coaching
both teams actually becomes a huge help to both programs. The Swarm season does not start until January
and they play most of their games on weekends. The Swarm practices are in the morning, the Toppers in the
afternoon and night. I have tremendous support and help from assistants to achieve this balance and understanding from both administrations!
With numerous relatives that have attended Schlarman, Coach Spezia wants to help the school prosper.
He says, “It is essential to the community of Danville and provides a true alternative to educational needs of
young people in this community. With eight grandchildren I want to leave something positive for them, as
well as the numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in this community!”

MAJOR GIFT TO THE SCHLARMAN FOUNDATION
Schlarman Foundation members, the Ruth Carlon family and guests gathered together on August 8, 2015 at Schlarman Academy North Campus to
honor Ruth Carlon for her generous donation of farmland to the Schlarman
Foundation.
After Ms. Carlon’s death, Schlarman Foundation found out that it was to
receive farmland situated in Iroquois County as per her wishes in her will.
Such a wonderful gift to receive. The Schlarman Foundation was to honor
her wishes by not selling the property. Half of the income from the farmland is to go to tuition assistance to Catholic families in good standing with
students in grades 9-12 at Schlarman Academy. The other half of the income was to be decided by the Schlarman Foundation Board as they see fit
for Schlarman Academy and based on the needs of the school. The first distribution of this gift was the 2015-2016 school year.
All who were in attendance that evening gathered in the Schlarman Chapel.
Schlarman Foundation President Nancy O’Kane welcomed everyone and
Jim Mulvaney gave a brief history of the gift. The prayer service was led by
Fr. Greg Nelson. Afterwards, everyone gathered in front of the main entrance of the school for a dedication ceremony led by Fr. Patrick O’Neal.
A light meal was then served in the mansion and on the mansion patio.
The Schlarman Foundation extends great appreciation to Ruth Carlon and
family. This donation will live on for always in our Schlarman students.
Education was Ms. Carlon’s focus and Schlarman Academy is truly thankful for this support through the Schlarman Foundation.

GREAT ALUMNI HONOR BESTOWED ON SCHLARMAN
Schlarman Academy officially was added to the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll that celebrates schools that have contributed to Super Bowl history.
Edmund “Zeke” Bratkowski, Schlarman Class of 1949 and who played in Super Bowls I and II
with the Green Bay Packers, was on hand Thursday, October 1 to present the Wilson Golden
Football to Schlarman Academy.
The Super Bowl High School Honor Roll links the past 49 Super Bowls with this year’s game
and honors the high schools and communities that have positively impacted the game of football.
Nearly 3,000 players and head coaches and more than 2,000 high schools will be recognized this
season. “This is a special honor that only 2,000 schools in the nation have received,” Principal
Gail Lewis told the student body.
All of the Super Bowl Honor Roll high schools across the country and around the globe will receive a commemorative Golden Football produced by Wilson for each player or head coach who
graduated from a particular high school and who was on an active Super Bowl roster. The players
and coaches that are honored come from both teams that competed in a Super Bowl.
Bratkowski, who was wearing his Super Bowl II ring, reminisced about his days at Schlarman in
the 1940s. “I was blessed to have Coach (Paul) Shebby as my coach. He treated every student
the same,” Bratkowski said. “He had us go downtown and bowl. We played ping-pong, golf and
tennis. He wanted us to do everything and it paid off. I still love to play golf,” he said.
Bratkowski played for the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams and the Green Bay Packers, with
whom he had success as a football quarterback and earned three world championship rings. He
earned his first ring as a Packer in a world championship game against the Cleveland Browns
before there was a Super Bowl. He also was a National Football League coach for 26 years.
“Coach (Vince) Lombardi told us there are only three things that are important in life: religion,
family and the Green Bay Packers,” he said, telling the students he would add Schlarman and
service to country to that list.
“Freshmen, get everything you can (from school) because the years go by fast,” he said. “Don’t
leave school and think once you get out that you wish you had done more. If you don’t know
what you’re going to do after high school, go into the military,” he said.
Bratkowski continued to dispense advice to the young crowd, telling them to be more helpful to
their parents and to assess themselves frequently. “Ask yourself, ‘How was I today?’ How can I
be a better person?’” he said. “Ask your teacher if you don’t understand something. “Most individuals work at 40 percent,” he said. “All of you have great talent; just raise the level from 40
percent.”
In addition to the Golden Football, all Super Bowl Honor Roll high schools, including Schlarman
Academy, will receive a NFL character education curriculum and be eligible to apply for grants
from the NFL Foundation to help support and grow their high school’s football program. Some of
the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll visits will be captured by NFL Films and will be featured on CBS This Morning (Thursday mornings) and during Thursday Night Football programming that will continue throughout the 2015 NFL season.
