• This will be the 24th matchup between the two in-state rivals with Tennessee State holding a 15-8 series
margin. UT Martin has won two of the last three showdowns against the Tigers, including the program’s
first road win at Tennessee State since 2008 and first win at Hale Stadium in program history with a 21-16
victory last season.
• Saturday’s game caps off an eventful week on campus, serving as the feature of Homecoming week
as fans and alumni make their annual trek back to UT Martin. UT Martin is 34-28 all-time on Homecoming
while posting a 1-3 mark against Tennessee State in the annual affair.
• UT Martin (2-2, 1-1 OVC) is coming off a 31-17 road victory at Tennessee Tech to not only pick up the
team’s first OVC win of the season, but give the squad an early advantage in the Sgt. York Trophy series.
Jarod Neal completed 25 passes for 248 yards while tossing four touchdowns. Rod Wright caught nine
passes for 112 while averaging 12.4 yards per catch. Along with his nine receptions, Wright tallied a pair
of touchdowns, ranking as the first Skyhawk to record back-to-back multi-touchdown reception games
since Jeremy Butler notched consecutive games against Austin Peay and Murray State in 2012.
• The Skyhawk defense recorded eight sacks against Tennessee Tech, notching the second-best
single-game performance in the nation this season. The total ranked as the most sacks in a game
since the Skyhawks had nine against Concordia on Sept. 11, 2008. It also served as the most in
an OVC game since Oct. 4, 2003 against Tennessee Tech. Junior Damani Taylor paced the team
with 2.5 of his OVC leading 4.5 sacks against the Golden Eagles. It served as the best individual
performance since Tony Bell recorded a program record with 4.5 against Murray State in 2013.
• In his 10th season at the helm of the Skyhawks, UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson enters Saturday’s
contest with an overall record of 60-47. With the victory against Tennessee Tech, Simpson moved into ninth
place on the OVC’s all-time wins leaderboard, tying Murray State’s Bill Furgerson with 60 career victories.
• Tennessee State (3-1, 1-1 OVC) comes into the contest after a strong showing against Florida A&M its
last time out. Facing a deficit after halftime, the Tigers would score 23 unanswered points to storm back
and pick up a 30-14 road victory on Sept. 27 prior to a bye week. The quarterback pair of Ronald Butler
and O’Shay Ackerman-Carter leads one of the league’s best passing attacks, combining to toss 914
yards and nine touchdowns through the first four games. Telvin Hooks leads a ground attack with 212
yards and three touchdowns while Patrick Smith’s 412 yards and five touchdowns leads a balanced
receiving core.

SKYHAWKS SACK THE GOLDEN EAGLES
The Skyhawks tallied eight sacks against Tennessee Tech on Oct. 3,
ranking as the second-best team performance in the nation this season.
The total ranked as the most sacks in a game since the Skyhawks had
nine against Concordia on Sept. 11, 2008. It also served as the most
in an OVC game since Oct. 3, 2003 against Tennessee State.
Damani Taylor lead all players with 2.5 sacks in the contest, moving
into first place in the OVC in sacks with 6.0 this years. His 2.5 sacks
ranked as the highest individual sack performance since Tony Bell
notched 4.5 sacks against Murray State on Nov. 2, 2013.
ROD PROVES TO BE THE WRIGHT WAY IN AIR ATTACK
Rod Wright continues to impress through the last three games,
totaling 24 catches for 333 yards and five touchdowns. That proved
evident when Wright caught nine passes for 112 yards while averaging
12.4 yards per catch. Along with his nine receptions, Wright became the
first player to catch multiple touchdowns in back-to-back games. The last
player to record consecutive weeks with multi-touchdown performances
were by Jeremy Butler against Austin Peay and Murray State in 2012.
UT Martin
THE SIMPSON CHRONICLES
football coach Jason Simpson has been a pillar of
consistency in the Ohio Valley Conference since taking over the
Skyhawk program prior to the 2006 season. Currently in his 10th season
at the helm of the program, Simpson ranks as the longest tenured coach in
the league while ranking first among active OVC coaches with 60 wins.
He picked up his 60th career victories at Tennessee Tech on Oct. 3 while
moving into a tie for ninth place in OVC history. In OVC play alone,
Simpson has a career mark of 45-27 through 10 seasons, more than
doubling the program’s 20 win total which stretched through 14 seasons
before his tenure.
NEAL CONTINUES TO SOAR UP THE CHARTS
Fifth-year quarterback Jarod Neal has made the most of his season
to this point, completing 90 passes while tallying 1,069 yards and 14
touchdowns. Through the first four games, Neal has already equaled
last season’s touchdown total while quickly approaching his 1,880
yardage mark. Neal needs just 41 passing yards to move into sixth
place on the career passing leaderboard while he sits just 65 yards out
of sixth place in career total offense. His 46 career touchdowns also
ranks in sixth.
LANDRY TURNS SMALL STATURE INTO BIG PLAYS
With four pass breakups at Tennessee Tech, senior cornerback
Jordan Landry notched his 17th career pass breakup, moving into a tie
for third place all-time in individual pass breakups. Landry needs just six
pass breakups to tie the school’s career record with current New York
Giants General Manager Jerry Reese. He also leads the secondary
with 19 tackles, five pass breakups and an interception against Ole Miss,
notching his first interception since Tennessee State on Nov. 17, 2012.
REDDITT APPROACHES ALL-TIME KICK SCORING MARK
Fifth-year kicker Jackson Redditt has consistently moved up the
school’s all-time kick scoring mark. Redditt has booted 28 career field
goals while converting 88 extra point attempts, totalling 182 points
for his career. Redditt needs just nine points to tie Tom Hansen (191)
and sits 39 points behind Ki Tok Chu at 221.
UT MARTIN LOOKS TO RETAIN SGT. YORK TROPHY
The Skyhawks took home their third Sgt. York Trophy since 2010 after
completing a season sweep of in-state OVC foes Austin Peay, Tennessee
State and Tennessee Tech. UTM has won the trophy in 2010, 2012 and
2014 while holding a 16-8 all-time record in the series - the best mark of
the four Tennessee OVC schools. Saturday’s contest against Tennessee
Tech marks the series opener on Oct. 3 before hosting Tennessee State
(Oct. 10) and Austin Peay (Oct. 17).
WIN BREAKDOWN BY CLASSES UNDER SIMPSON
Under the direction of head coach Jason Simpson, the Skyhawks
have found unparalleled success during each senior class’s tenure.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Skyhawks have a mountain of a schedule set in front of them.
After opening the season at FBS foe No. 15 Ole Miss (currently No.
4), the squad then takes on No. 1 Jacksonville State to close out
September. They will later play Arkansas on Oct. 31 before taking on
No. 17 Eastern Kentucky. As a whole, the Skyhawks take on four teams
which are ranked nationally in their respective subdivisions.
The Skyhawks
SKYHAWKS IN THE NFL
continued its recent history of giving players NFL
opportunities with four 2014 seniors earning a piece of the spotlight.
The quartet of LB Tony Bell (Tennessee Titans), OT Charles Sweeton
(Kansas City Chiefs & Denver Broncos), RB Abou Toure (Indianapolis
Colts) and TE Corey Jordan (Jacksonville Jaguars) all earned the
right to make a name for themselves in NFL rookie camps this spring. As
a whole, the Skyhawk football program has now produced 10 players
who have received NFL opportunities since 2013.
Hughes (Indianapolis Colts), Butler (Baltimore Ravens), es Sweeton
(Denver Broncos) and Abou Toure (Indianapolis Colts) were all on
NFL preseason rosters.
NOT YOUR AVERAGE KICKOFF
With the Skyhawks looking for a comeback against No. 1 Jacksonville
State, the squad pulled a mixture of strategy and luck to recover the
team’s first on-side kick since Nov. 12, 2011 against Tennessee State.
Keeping with the theme, UT Martin mastered the recovery just a few weeks
earlier against Tennessee Tech at home on Oct. 1, 2011.
Before Saturday, UT Martin’s last on-side kick attempt occurred
against Eastern Kentucky in 2014 when the recovery was negated due
to a illegal touching penalty.
SKYHAWKS COME UP JUST SHORT AGAINST GOLIATH
UT Martin’s OVC opener was no cupcake, opening up against No.
1 Jacksonville State in the program’s first matchup against a topranked FCS opponent. Despite falling behind by 28 points in the fourth
quarter, the Skyhawks would score three consecutive touchdowns to
bring the contest back to a seven point margin in the final four minutes
of play. Time would not be kind for the Skyhawks as time expired before
the comeback attempt could be completed.
REDDITT PROVES VERSATILE WITH THE BOOT
Long known for being one of the program’s all-time best place
kickers, Jackson Redditt has proven his versatility with his right leg.
With the graduation of James Satterfield, the Skyhawks turned to
Redditt to man both place kicking and punting duties. Redditt has made
the most of his punts opportunities, tallying 15 punts for 662 yards,
averaging 44.1 yards per punt, good for second in the OVC. He
also ranks second in scoring average/game (8.0, T-2nd), PAT kicking
percentage (1.000, 1st) and field goals/game (1.0, 2nd) in the OVC.

NEAL TABBED OVC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Keeping with his hot pace at the helm of the Skyhawk offense,
quarterback Jarod Neal notched his first career adidas OVC
Offensive Player of the Week honor of his career after posting a
standout performance against No. 1 Jacksonville State. Neal nearly
led an offense back from a 28-point deficit in the fourth quarter with
three consecutive scoring drives before eventually falling 48-41. Neal
completed 34-of-49 passes for 433 yards and four touchdowns while
also rushing for 21 yards against the top-ranked Gamecocks.
The 34 completions and 433 yards were both career-highs for the
fifth-year senior. His yardage 433 yards ranked as the best passing
performance since 2012. Additionally, his 454 yards of total offense
moved Neal into eighth place on the UTM career list with 4,251.
SKYHAWKS GARNER SPOTLIGHT
Saturday’s game marks the first of consecutive games available on
ESPN3, joining the contest at Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Oct. 3. UT
Martin currently has 10 of the team’s 11 games available to a national
audience. The Skyhawks opened the season on the SEC Network against
Ole Miss before seeing seven contests on the OVC Digital Network,
a pair on ESPN3 and one game on the American Sports Network
(ASN). No announcement on the team’s contest against Arkansas has
been made available.
SKYHAWKS PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN OVC RACE
The Ohio Valley Conference announced its preseason polls and
all-conference performers in conjunction with the league’s Football
Media Day festivities held at the Holiday Inn Nashville – Vanderbilt
in July. UT Martin was selected fourth in the preseason poll, ranking
as the highest poll position since 2009. The poll, as voted on by the
league’s head coaches and sports information directors, saw the
Skyhawks garner 78 total points.
Defending OVC champion Jacksonville State was picked as the
preseason favorite for the second straight year after picking up 16 of
the 18 first-place votes to top the 2015 poll. The Gamecocks totaled
128 total points to out-distance both Eastern Illinois (107) and Eastern
Kentucky (106). The Skyhawks were followed by Tennessee State (66),
Southeast Missouri (63), Tennessee Tech (45), Murray State (38) and
Austin Peay (17).
TRANSFERS ADD CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE
Looking for a splash from the FBS level, the Skyhawks have added
a pair of players who not only hail from the country’s elite programs,
but won national titles during their tenure.
Quarterback Troy Cook joins the Skyhawks from Florida State
where he was a member of the undefeated 2014 Florida State squad
while tight end Malcolm Faciane won a pair of championships (2011,
2012) while at Alabama. Joining in the national title conversation
is JUCO transfer running back Preston Baker who helped lead East
Mississippi Community College to back-to-back NJCAA national
championships and an unblemished 24-0 record in his two seasons.
SKYHAWKS EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM
A total of seven football student-athletes compiled at least a 3.25
Grade Point Average and secured a spot on the 2014-15 Ohio Valley
Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Chris Coleman, Sam Curtis, Taino Fears-Perez, Trent Garland,
Matt Murphy, Jarod Neal and Jackson Roberts all held their own
in the classroom, joining a list of 100 Skyhawk student-athletes to be
named to the list.
SKYHAWK FOOTBALL EARNS “MOST IMPROVED APR” AWARD
UT Martin football was recognized by the Football Championship
Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) with an
Academic Progress Rate (APR) Award.
The APR Award recognized UT Martin with the Ohio Valley
Conference’s “Most Improved APR in 2013-14” honor.
The Skyhawks found a necessary balance both competitively and
academically, earning the league’s “Most Improved” award while
closing out the 2014 season on a momentum push.

The longest tenured head football coach in the Ohio Valley Conference
is Jason Simpson, who has transformed the University of Tennessee at
Martin program into one of the winningest teams in the OVC since his first
season in 2006.
In nine years, Simpson has led UT Martin to a 58-45 record (.563 winning
percentage) and a 45-26 mark against OVC opponents (.634 winning
percentage). That comes after the program had won 20 OVC games
in its first 14 seasons in the league. He also has presided over 61 All-OVC
players after the program tallied 33 such players in its first 14 seasons in the
OVC.
Simpson’s 58 career victories rank 10th in OVC history while his 45
conference wins come in at ninth place in league history.
