News from the Principal….
Welcome to the 2013 school year. It gives me great pleasure to welcome back our existing students, families and
staff for what promises to be a fantastic year at Rushworth P-12 College. A warm welcome is extended to all our
new students, families and staff who are joining us for 2013 and beyond. We are pleased you have made the
choice to join our College community and we look forward to building strong and positive relationships with you
over the years ahead.

their journey of schooling with us.

Our focus for 2013
Each year the College Council and staff work together to improve how we operate and what we achieve as a College. In 2013 we will be continuing the work that we have commenced over the last eighteen months and our focus of ongoing College improvement will be on:
Student Learning – Build the confidence and competence of all teachers to ensure that the students are exposed to quality teaching and learning.
Student Engagement and Wellbeing – creating an environment where learning can flourish through the development and implementation of a behaviour support model.
Student Pathways & Transitions – Changing community perceptions to make the College a positive option for
the Rushworth and surrounding communities.

Industrial Action
The ongoing dispute over the working conditions of school staff continues between the State Government and
relevant Unions. It is anticipated that protected stop work action by teachers and support staff across the state
will continue until an agreement is reached. This protected industrial action will impact on the College in several
ways during Term 1. At this point in time a full day stop work is planned by teachers and support staff across the
state on Thursday 14th February, if this action goes ahead parents are forewarned that there will be no classes for
certain year levels on this day. Further information about possible class cancellations will be advised on Tuesday
12th February.

P-12 Represented at Australia Day Ceremonies
Rushworth P-12 College was ably represented at Australia Day ceremonies in both Rushworth and Stanhope.
During the ceremony at Rushworth Shire Hall, recognition was given to Rushworth P-12 College’s successful
collaboration with fire services to receive the Fire Awareness Award (Education) at State level. Teacher Greg
Hutchison and program participant Carrigan Horsley represented the College on stage, along with representatives
from local supporting brigades. A brief address was given by CFA Coordinator Brian Wright, from Colbinabbin CFA.
College Dux for 2012, Jake Thompson was nominated
for Rushworth and District ‘Junior Citizen of the Year’
by teacher Chris Hogan on behalf of the College. In
addition to receiving this award, Jake was also the
recipient of the Campaspe Shire ‘Junior Citizen of the
Year’. The audience was further delighted by Jake’s
sensitive rendition of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’
on the piano. Congratulation to Jake, who is a truly
worthy recipient of these awards, which reflect his
hard work, persistence and community-minded spirit.

Year 9 student Blake Rosenberg attended at Rushworth in a dual capacity. He was
official photographer for the event and presented an eloquent and thoughtprovoking speech entitled ‘What Australia Day
Means to Me’. Blake also attended the
Stanhope ceremony earlier in the day to
present his speech and set-up and operate the
public address system for the event.
We can be proud of these talented
ambassadors for our College, who embrace
their community and wish to step into the
future, making a difference!

VCE Coordinator NEWS
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and my role at the college.
My name is Miss Frankie O’Toole and I will be taking on the role of VCE Coordinator in 2013 as Mr. Hogan has
stepped into the role of Leading Teacher at the College.
Some of my responsibilities will include:
Assisting students with subject selection
Working closely with the Pathways Coordinator
Communicating with parents in regards to VCE important dates and student progress
Developing Assessment calendars and exam timetables
Working with and support VCE teachers
Mr. Hogan has left very big shoes to fill however I am excited by the opportunity to help guide students to their
prospective futures.

Today’s VCE Parents tips:
Learn about the VCE system so that you understand what your child is going through. This will also make communication a lot easier. If your child knows that you understand what they are talking about, chances are that they
will open up if they are feeling stressed.

Your teachers are a major resource: make sure you use them. Talk to them about any problems you are having,
and ask for extra help if you need it.
Private Car Conveyance
Allowance Claims
To be eligible to receive Conveyance Allowance students must travel more than 4.8km by the shortest
practicable route to the nearest school bus service and be enrolled at the nearest Government School.
If you think you may be eligible to receive conveyance allowance please enquire at the College office.
Families who received conveyance allowance in 2012 will need to fill in a new form
in 2013.
Forms are available from the general office and must be returned by Friday 22nd
February.

The Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival Inc. in conjunction with the Rushworth P-12
College will be running a Scarecrow competition for the 2013 Easter Festival. It is
hoped that the children (and teachers) will be able to let their imaginations go wild
by using recycled materials to create wonderful scarecrows which can then be
displayed in the High Street on Easter Saturday.
The competition will also be opened to other primary schools in the area, St.
Mary's, Colbinabbin, Stanhope, and Murchison. And if any other groups or
individuals in the district would like to take part there will also be an ‘Open
section’.
At this stage details are being worked out about the ‘skeleton’ and base and as soon as that has been
decided details will be published. Now is the time to start collecting materials – just think of all the
wrapping paper, food cartons etc. that you could save.
At some time on the Easter Saturday some of these scarecrows will be auctioned and the money will go
to both to P-12 and the Easter Festival.
Scarecrows are also the ‘theme’ of the 2013 Festival for any themed floats. Scarecrows can be based on
any ideas from films (Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc.) to popular artists (Madonna. Kyle Minogue – just
trying to think of singers with great outfits) to ones based on family members or teachers!!!! Participants
could also be encouraged to write a short biography of their scarecrow (entirely fictitious of course) and
make up appropriate names for them. These can be pinned onto their ‘person’ to add to the fun.
Certificates will be awarded for the different age groups. Won’t it be just great to see a colourful spectacle of scarecrows up and down the main street. So get saving oddments and start thinking.

Class sizes and times available are limited and a waiting list may apply. Students will come out of normal
classes for lessons and then return at the end of their lesson.
Students will be expected to make a serious commitment to learning their instrument and being a part of
the Music Program at Rushworth P-12 College.
There is an annual fee of $48, which can be paid in Term instalments. Instruments are
available at the College, however, students may wish to bring their own instruments to
lessons.

Welcome to all new and returning staff and students. I hope 2013 is a great year for you all in health.
Already there are a few things happening:
First: A reminder that Term 1 is still hats on at school for all staff and students. As we are a SunSmart School, we need to
be mindful that we need to;
1.Slip on a shirt - and wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible (e.g. tops that cover the shoulders and arms,
not singlet tops) and rash vests or t-shirts for water activities
2. Slop on SPF 30+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply
sunscreen every two hours.
3. Slap on a hat – one that protects the face, neck and ears such as a broad brimmed, legionnaire or bucket style hat.
Baseball caps do not offer enough protection and are not recommended by SunSmart. Please help your child remember
to bring and wear their approved hat.
4. Seek shade – and choose shady spots for play whenever possible.
5. Slide on some sunglasses - if practical and approved by the school. Make sure they are labelled AS 1067 and cover as
much of the eye area as possible.
Secondly: Year 7, Year 9 boys and Year 10 students are due for their vaccinations. A card has been sent home with your
child/ren in the first week of Term. THESE MUST BE SIGNED AND RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE NO LATER THAN
15TH FEBRUARY 2013. The cards still need to be returned to school even if you do not want your child to have the
vaccination. I will be following up parents if the cards haven’t been returned. If you didn’t receive a card please contact
the school on 5856 1230.
Boys now included in National HPV Vaccination Program
As of this year, boys are now included in the National HPV Vaccination Program. The human papillomavirus (HPV)
vaccine, formerly known as the cervical cancer vaccine, has been routinely delivered to girls in Australia since 2007 as
part of the school-based National Immunisation Program.
Genital HPV is a very common sexually transmitted infection that affects four in five people, but is usually harmless and
leaves the body naturally. However, some persistent HPV infections can cause serious illness including some genital
cancers and warts that can affect both males and females.
The three-dose HPV vaccine can help protect your child from developing these diseases in the future. The vaccine is
most effective if taken at age 12–13, before the commencement of sexual activity and when the body produces more
antibodies.
Girls and boys in Year 7 are now eligible for the free vaccine.* In 2013–2014 only, boys in Year 9 will also be offered the
vaccine for free as part of a national catch-up initiative.
To coincide with the change to the HPV Vaccination Program, the Cancer Council has developed a new website with
updated information on HPV, the vaccine and the school program – www.hpvvaccine.org.au.
The website includes various written and audio-visual resources suitable for
parents and teens. We encourage all parents and students to visit the website if
they would like more information, or call the Cancer
Council Helpline on 13 11 20.


much more worldly approach upon their return to Australia.
World Education Program Australia (WEP), a not-for-profit student exchange organisation registered with
the education departments, is now accepting applications for students to live overseas in 2013/14 as exchange students for a summer, semester or year.
WEP is offering two $3000 scholarships towards semester-long student exchange programs to Argentina
and China commencing in 2014.

Sports Report:
Welcome to 2013!! What a year we have ahead of us in the Health/PE and Sports departments, with carnivals and
interschool sports days, lunchtime activities and LOTS happening in Health and PE classes, it’s going to be busy,
busy, busy with lots of opportunities for FUN!
Swimming
We are jumping straight into it with our upcoming Secondary Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 12 th February at the
Stanhope Pool followed closely by the Primary Swimming Program starting on the 18 th and running all week at the
Rushworth Pool, finishing up with the Primary Carnival held on Friday 22nd February (12-3pm). Parents are of
course more than welcome to attend either event and we would love to see you there supporting your children!!
A reminder that permission notes for both of these events as well as the updated medical forms need to be returned ASAP to assist with the smooth running of these days.
Health/PE Classes
In Health & PE classes we have hit the ground running with our practical and theory classes, helping to assist our
students to live happy and healthy lives. Students in years 7-10 should by now have a copy of the McMillan
“Physical and Health Education Workbook” (Book 1 for years 7 & 8 students, Book 2 for years 9 & 10 students)
which can be ordered through Landmark School Supplies - 13 Telford Drive Shepparton 5831 6300.
Sports Uniform
All students in years 7-10 and those studying VCE PE should all have a College PE uniform to wear in practical classes, it is also recommended that students in Grade 5 and 6 get a PE uniform during the year. This is for hygiene and
ease of movement in classes. The uniform consists of black shorts or pants (leggings are not acceptable), nonmarking running footwear and a hat in terms 1 and 4. The school is currently in the process of acquiring a new PE
shirt, which will hopefully be available in Term 1 however for now the red polo shirt is still preferred.
In addition to a the PE uniform for PE classes, we also recommend the use of anti-perspirant deodorant before and
after class (note: Lynx and Impulse body perfumes are generally not anti-perspirant). These should be roll-on, as
aerosol deodorants can induce asthma attacks when used in confined spaces.
We hope that you are all looking forward to another jampacked year in 2013 and remember, keeping fit and healthy is
not just important, it’s also lots of fun!!
