Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty
arm to strengthen and protect the men and
women of our Armed Forces. As they face
the myriad of challenges and decisions
that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored
by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted
by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this
community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they
may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the
honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

GOD’S WORK OF
SALVATION
God’s work of salvation is the focus
of this weekend’s readings. From
the prophetic event of Isaiah to
Jesus’ understanding of the human
condition in Hebrews, concluding
with Jesus paying our ransom in
Mark, God is in control. There may be failings and
misunderstandings along the way. We may move away
from God, but at our conversion, God leads us back. Like
James and John, we may let greed and power blur our
vision of what Jesus wants us to know about the
Kingdom; but tirelessly we are taught and re-taught what
life in the Kingdom will be. Jesus has paid our ransom to
ensure that we will share in the Kingdom.
It is not unusual to think of Jesus’ ransom as a
punishment that he endured. However, it is more accurate,
and more like Jesus, for us to recognize ransom as God’s
gift to us.

The month of November is close so please do
not forget about our deceased loved ones who can be in
remembered a special way at the masses with intentions. Please pick up All Souls day envelope in the back
of the church. Include the names on the envelope and
return it in the collection basket. Every day from Monday to Friday during November we will have the names
read at the 7:00 p.m. Mass.
The best way to show our strength in the belief
of eternal life with our Lord and remember those important loved-ones who remain with us in spirit everyday,
but are now residing with our Father is through Mass,
Communion and Prayer. We can help them gain the
‘fullness of life’ with God through our prayers, offerings and good works.

Baby Bottle Project
We are asking our parishioners to
participate in a special fundraiser to help
women in crisis pregnancy situations by
supporting the pro-life work of The
Women’s Center of Great Chicagoland.
They do „pro-life” in a very full sense. As a crisis
pregnancy center they council women in crises pregnancy
with kindness and respect, and every year over 1000
women who go to The Women’s Centers for help in
determining what they should do decide to choose life.
The Women’s Centers also assist women financially by
helping them pay for food purchases at Dominick’s and
Jewel, and materially by providing nice clothing, diapers,
car seats, high chairs, and so much more. Finally, the
Mass is celebrated every weekend at the Women’s
Center, other prayers are said for the women and babies
every day in their chapel, and they are in full accord with
the ‘teachings’ of the Church.
This is a wonderful opportunity for parishioners of all
ages, including children, to be able to work together to
support ‘life’. Baby bottles will be available on October
28/29th at all the exits of the church for you to take home
and fill with spare change. Please return the bottles before
any of the Masses on the weekend of November 18/19th.
Please take one bottle per family. Thank you for
participating in this worth cause.

St. Andrew Life Center (7000 N. Newark, Niles) will be conducting monthly blood
pressure screening for the community. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is known as
the Silent Killer, because very often is causes no signs or symptoms to warn the individual
of its presence. Periodic blood pressure tests can be a quick way to detect a serious health
problem and prevent a stroke.
The screening will take a place every fourth Friday of the month from 9 a.m. Until
11:00 a.m. At the Life Center. This month the blood pressure screening will take place on
Friday, October 27, 2006.

HELP SOMEONE
IN NEED:
You know that giving blood can help save the life of
someone who is injured or has a serious illness but
still you might hesitate. Maybe you’ve used one of
these excuses when asked to give blood:
I don’t have time — It will be too painful — I don’t
want to get a disease — Plenty of other people already
give blood. There must be more than enough.
Saint Andrew Life Center (7000 N. Newark, Niles)
invites the community for an important lecture ‘Dealing
with Depression’ presented by Resurrection Health Care
Behavior Health Staff. The lecture will be held on
Wednesday, October 25 at 10 a.m. For more information
please call 847/647-8332.
Before you decide that giving blood isn’t for you, check
out these facts - they might just change your mind.
IT’S FAST — When you arrive to donate blood, expect to
go through a screening process. First, you will be asked to
fill out a questionnaire about your medical background.
Then, a health professional will check your vital signs and
temperature and take a blood sample to check if your iron
levels are high enough to give blood. Donating a pint of
blood takes only about 10 minutes. Allow time to
complete the health questionnaire and have refreshments
after, and you’re finished in about an hour. Considering
what a blood donation can mean to someone in need,
that’s an hour well spent.
IT’S EASY — Some people may be frightened by
needles or afraid that “losing” blood will be painful.
When the donation starts, you will feel just a brief sting
and then you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. Most people
feel fine during and after giving blood. Some people may
feel lightheaded afterward. For this reason, you will be
served juice, cookies and cake and coffee and asked to sit
down and relax before you get back to your daily
activities.
IT’S SAFE — All the supplies used for your blood
donations, including needles, are sterile and used only one
time - just for you - and then thrown away. You can feel
safe giving blood at St. Ferdinands.
THE NEED IS URGENT — Approximately every two
seconds someone needs blood in the United States,
according to the American Red Cross. Your life-giving
blood may be used to help patients undergoing surgery,
cancer patients, accident victims and hemophiliacs. If you
are healthy, age 17 or older and weigh at least 110
pounds, consider giving the gift of life.
Yesterday, a stranger donated blood that you or a loved
one may unexpectedly need. Return the favor — donate
blood on Sunday, October 29th in Canning Hall. Please

Polish Baking with Oak Mill Bakery
On October 26th at 7:00p.m. At the Chicago Public
Library located at 6100 West Irving Park, Ms. Bogna
Solak of Oak Mill Bakery will demonstrate how to make
honey cakes, cookies, poppy seed strudels, and cakes. A
tasting will follow.
A holy Hour in honor of St. Peregrine, the cancer saint,
will be celebrated Sunday, November 5 at 2:00 p.m. At
the National Shrine of St. Peregrine, Our Lady of Sorrows
Basilica. The service will include Scripture, Sermon,
Sacrament of the Annoying of the Sick, and Blessing of
Individuals with the relic of St. Peregrine, and
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. For further

The Our Lady of Victory Holy Name Society will hold its
Annual Thanksgiving Bingo on Saturday, November
11th, starting at 7:00 p.m. In the School Hall (Laramie
and Sunnyside Aves.) There will be Regular and Special
Bingo Game and a last game coverall for $300, along
with food, refreshments and raffles. Come and enjoy the
evening with your friends and neighbors. The doors will
open at 6:00 p.m.
Saint Pascal Church is having a big Thanksgiving Raffle
with cash prizes totaling $30,000! The grand Prize is

It’s time once again for the annual craft show sponsored
by the St. Celestine Teens. The Parish Craft Show will be
held on Sunday, October 29th, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
The Craft Show will be held in the Parish School’s GYM.
There will be an hourly raffle, a children’s craft corner, a
bake sale, lots of unique crafts and lunch counter. Plan on to

Notre Dame High School Open Houses – Notre Dame
High School will host two Open Houses for young men and
their families to visit with NDHS. These Open Houses will be
held Thursday, November 2nd from 5:30-8:30 pm and
Sunday, No-vember 12th from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm . All
prospective junior high students and their parents are invited
to attend these events for individual tours of the facilities and
programs of Notre Dame.
These events are geared to provide an insightful look at
how Notre Dame educates the minds and hearts of young
men by shaping leaders in the areas of faith, scholarship and

Resurrection High School will host it’s Annual Fall Arts
and Craft Fair on Saturday, November 11, 2006 from 10:00

ON RUDE DRIVERS, AND ATTITUDE

My wife and I talk about rude drivers all the time, probably
because there are so many of them out there to inspire the
conversation. Usually, though, we don’t incriminate ourselves in
the telling because, being on the outside looking in, we’re
typically mere observers of the scene. But in my latest rudedriver encounter, I put myself squarely into the episode itself.
This wasn’t justified, of course, but what’s done is done, and I
bring it up now only because today’s readings prompt me to
recall what happened then…
First, I need to tell you that Gail and I live just off a frontage
road which roughly parallels Chicago’s Kennedy Expressway.
Not far from the nearest Kennedy on-ramp, this road intersects
with Foster, a major east-west thoroughfare. At the intersection
are three lanes, two outbound, and one inbound. The right
outbound lane--as a driver approaches the intersection from our
place--is marked with a right hand arrow and the word, “ONLY.”
The middle outbound lane is unmarked, indicating that drivers
here have two choices: straight, or left onto Foster. The third
lane--the inbound lane--is for drivers turning from Foster onto the
frontage road.
Here’s the deal… I was on the frontage road a couple of
nights ago looking to turn left onto Foster, so I pulled into the
middle lane and engaged my left turn signal. A few moments
later, some schmoe pulled up along side of me to my left--in the
incoming traffic lane--also looking to turn left. Huh? I couldn’t
believe this guy’s brazenness, his cheekiness, his blatant
disregard for the rules of the road. I’m not exactly sure why I did
what I did next, but anger had a lot to do with it. Instead of just
letting the guy turn onto Foster before me, I pulled up a smidge
and cut my wheel hard left, essentially boxing him until the eastwest traffic cleared and I completed my turn first.
I’m not proud of this, so feel free to think less of me, but when
I told my wife about it, she was willing to keep me around just
the same. And when I asked her how this guy could possibly
think that what he did was OK, she said what she usually says
when we have our rude-driver discussions. She said his rudeness
was--is--buoyed by his belief that he is better than the rest of us
on the road, that his time is more valuable than everybody else’s
time, and that he is entitled to bend the rules to his liking. It’s
good to be king, apparently.
And it all boils down to attitude. Isaiah’s text refers to the
Servant who serves through his very own suffering. In Hebrews,
we are reminded that Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses for
he has been similarly tested. And in the Gospel, our Lord tells us
that to be great, we must lower ourselves. Truly, attitude is
everything. The guy to my left was a jerk because he thought he
was king of the (frontage) road; I was a jerk in-kind by cutting
him off as I did. On the bigger Road, I hope to rise above the
fray. On the bigger Road, Lord, may my attitude be ever an
attitude of service, not of superiority and entitlement.
